Tania looked stressed. It seemed like she was shouting at him. Hunter was quietly leaning against a red car, holding the pendant of his necklace in one hand. His face was flushed and he looked like he was struggling to control his emotions. He didn’t even look like he was listening to Tania at all.
He looked up and saw us walking past them. He caught my eye and held my stare. I couldn’t understand the emotion on his face as he looked into my eyes.
Did he hear me sing? Does he recognize me at all?
I had a feeling he knew who I was. Unfortunately, remembering me and admitting that he knew me were two totally different things.
Hunter’s glance drifted off to the rose I was holding in my hand. I saw the bored expression on his face before he turned away.
“Burger Inn?” Chaise asked as we all hopped in his jeep.
“No! Half of the people who were in the concert will be there too! And I just w
Zadkiel – The Archangel of MercyChaise picked me up at nine in the morning. When I hopped into his car, I noticed that the white SUV was gone.I almost backed out of coming to this weekend getaway. I felt uncertain about how Denise’s cousins would react to me. One of his cousins already didn’t like me that much, he was trying his best to forget he even knew me at all. When we got to Denise’s house, she was already in the front garden waiting. She almost cursed at Chaise for being late. She went inside a black SUV and I could see there were people with her.Just then, a beautiful white Escalade went out of the garage and went ahead of us. It looked a lot like the car that was parked in front of my house last night. As soon as the Escalade was in motion, Denise drove behind it, signaling Chaise to start his engine and follow.“How long is this drive?” I asked Chaise.“Not
His voice was so familiarly gentle, I wanted to cry. He sounded like he did before he left.I couldn’t find my voice, so I nodded.“I got you,” he whispered so softly only the two of us heard that. He swam towards the ladder. He gently guided me until I could grip the handles securely. He slowly let me go so I could pull myself up the stairs.Chaise and Denise were standing at the top, waiting for me anxiously. Chaise pulled me up to the deck and Denise wrapped a towel around me. Hunter followed soon after.I took a couple of breaths to steady myself as I realized how scared I was. Chaise put an arm around my shoulder and gave me a gentle squeeze. “Are you okay?” he asked, and I managed to nod.Hunter walked past us with a furious look on his face. He went straight to Mica and pointed a finger at her.“Next time you push people into deep waters, make sure they know how to swim!” he said
Uriel – The archangel who takes you out of the darkness and into the divine truth. As soon as Hunter’s smirk faded from his face, we saw bright lights streak the skies, followed by the loud, booming sounds of thunder. A few seconds later, heaven let out its wrath and large drops of water soaked our skin.I turned on my heel and headed back to the house. I tried to run. Unfortunately, the rain made the dock floor slippery and my slippers were not slip-proof. I took one step too quick and lost my balance. I shrieked, knowing well enough that I would fall flat on my ass in three, two…But I felt arms wrap around me immediately, breaking my fall, catching me. I looked up above me and saw Hunter looking down at me with an amused expression on his face, his arms wrapped all around me.He pulled me up and before I could settle both my feet on the ground to secure my balance, I felt his arms under my legs and the
He kissed me like he found an opportune moment to steal a little piece of heaven. He kissed me like he couldn’t find the right things to say and, instead, he was pouring out all his emotions, all his anger in those kisses. He kissed me like… he’d been wanting to kiss me but thought this moment would never happen anymore.I didn’t think… couldn’t think even if I wanted to. My own arms came to life and they wrapped themselves around Hunter’s neck. I kissed him back. I kissed him like I wanted to pour out all my bottled emotions in that kiss. I kissed him like I have been wanting to kiss him since the day he left me.Hunter lifted me off my feet and carried me towards the bedroom like I weighed nothing. His lips never left mine, his arms were like iron chains around my waist. He gently laid me on the mattress of his bed. I moaned as intense emotions spiraled through me with a force I could not control. His palm tou
All this time, Hunter was shielding the pain he hid inside. When I thought he was being a prick, he was actually heartbroken.I lay on the bed, motionless, listening to the uneven beats of the rain on the rooftop, feeling the rhythmic thumping of my heart inside my chest.I was sure my eyes would be swollen in the morning. But I knew that no matter how many more tears I shed tonight, it wasn’t going to make things better. Hunter and I lost a lot of time being apart. And until now, I couldn’t see a hope for our future.Maybe we were never meant to be together in the first place. Or maybe we were meant to be torn apart by bad timing and a series of unfortunate misunderstandings.Fatigue and heartache got the better of me. I closed my eyes and fell asleep, hoping that the nightmares would not come chasing me again, hoping that when I wake up, Hunter wouldn’t be hurting because of me. And I wouldn’t be hurting because of him.I
Jophiel – the archangel of beauty and wisdomWe were startled at the sound of Denise’s voice outside the house. We immediately stopped kissing, and blinked back at each other like we were pulled back from the state of trance we were in.We pulled away from each other. I sat up and Hunter stood up on the opposite end of the bed.He looked at me apologetically. He opened his mouth to say something but the door barged open before a word could escape his lips.“Alice!” Denise said walking towards me. “Are you okay?”Shit!I did not even know what I looked like. My hair was definitely disheveled. My lips were probably bruised from Hunter’s kisses and I knew my face was a whole new shade of crimson.“I’m fine, Denise,” I said, combing my hair with my fingers, trying my best to look nonchalant. She hugged me. It was only then that I saw Chaise standing behin
Denise gave me a slight shrug, as if she read my mind.“We’ll be there in a sec,” Denise replied.Chaise nodded and then he left quietly.“Do you think he heard us?” I asked Denise.“I don’t know. But if he did, then maybe your problem is solved. You wanted to find a way to tell him to bugger off. There you go!”“Denise!”She laughed. “Sorry, hun. Force of habit. You know there will be no love lost between Chaise and me.”All of us, with the exception of Hunter, had breakfast in the dining room. Mica was all sobered up and I hoped Denise would tell her parents about the incident. She needed to see somebody about handling her emotions properly. I know suicidal instincts when I see the signs. I was the girl whose mother killed herself when things got too much for her to handle.Hunter locked himself in the master’s bedroom, which made me feel both worri
Raziel – the archangel who is the keeper of divine mysteries and secrets.I didn’t see Chaise all Monday. He didn’t come up to me to my locker in between classes, did not join Denise and me for lunch. I didn’t see him even when I headed to work in the afternoon.Fortunately, for the whole day, I also didn’t see Hunter. I guess it was just my day off from worrying about either of them. That for once, I had the day for myself to figure out what I needed to do.When I kissed Hunter again, it felt the same as before. Electricity radiated from his lips to mine. It felt exhilarating and exciting… tormenting and heartbreaking all at the same time. It brought back all the memories of our time together. He made me feel safe and secure… and even if the world around us was full of danger, he still made me feel like I shouldn’t care. As long as I was in his arms… everything was going to be okay.Meredi
I opened my mouth to speak but no words came out. Hunter took a step forward and pulled me into his arms. He studied my face for a moment. I was afraid that my cheeks were crimson red, and he could see right through me. “Angel…” he whispered. “Are you okay?” I nodded. He titled my chin up so I could look at him. “Hey, this is me. You can tell me anything.” “I know,” I sighed. I smiled and kissed him on the cheek. “I’m okay.” I gently pulled away from him and then walked towards the bathroom. “Angel,” he called out and I turned back to him. “If it bothers you, I can sleep in the next room.” I shook my head. “No. It’s fine.” He walked towards me, giving me a reassuring smile. He wrapped his arms around my waist, looked into my eyes and said, “I don’t want you to feel any pressure, angel. I didn’t bring you here so I could seduce you.” My heart stopped beating altogether. “I just want us to have some alone
Chamuel – the archangel of peaceful relationshipsMy life for the following months had been pure bliss. I was not exactly invisible to the people in school because Hunter was always beside me. And he was definitely not invisible—especially to the girls. I knew they still couldn’t believe that I could score a guy like Hunter. I didn’t care what they thought. As long as they kept their thoughts—especially their limbs—to themselves and leave us the hell alone.Hunter never missed picking me up in the morning and driving me back from school every night. He was a way better guardian angel than Chaise ever was.It took a good twenty-four hours for Denise to recover from her shock when Hunter and I showed up in their house, holding hands. We finally explained to her how we first met at CRC when Hunter was still blind and how we fell in love.“She was the reason why I agreed for a transplant. I love
“Who me? No, I’m not…” I started but he silenced me with a kiss.“You are,” he said. “Why do you think I punched Don Winston in the first place?”“Because he poured ketchup all over me?”“And he didn’t just do that to embarrass you. Guys have different ways of expressing a crush, angel. Winston’s brain was just tiny. He hadn’t graduated from kindergarten tactics yet.”“Seriously?” I asked in shock.“Seriously. And since you played in that concert, the list of guys I would threaten to stay away from you has increased ten-folds.”“Lie!”“I wish it was,” he muttered under his breath. He took my hand in his and intertwined our fingers. As he opened the doors to Burger Inn, he raised our hands to his lips and gave my fingers a kiss, deliberately letting everybody see.I felt
Ariel – The "lion of God", an angel of protectionWith that, Hunter took the phone from me and said, “Stop interrupting my date, cuz. Tell your mom I would be home late. Talk to you later.” And he hung up on her.I groaned. “She is so going to kill me!”He laughed. “She’s been trying to do that to me for the last seventeen years but so far she hasn’t succeeded yet. Don’t worry. She’s not very good with assassination plots.”I laughed and then I rested my head on his shoulder again. After a minute, my phone beeped. It was Denise: Seriously, Alice? Hunter? I smiled. Hunter took my phone from me and typed a message: Seriously, Cuz. Me. – HDenise: You two have some serious explaining to do. I wanna kill both of you!Hunter chuckled.“You’re not going to reply for me?”He shook his head. &ldqu
Raphael – the Archangel who brings healingAlice.I couldn’t find my voice. Tears rolled down my cheeks. I couldn’t understand why or how it all happened. But the truth was right before my eyes.Hunter slowly approached me. The expression on his face was soft and gentle. Gone was the look of disgust or anger that he usually wore whenever he saw me.“Hunter? You? You were the guy who always followed me home? You were the one who saved me from those potheads?”He reached out to wipe my tears with his fingers. Then he nodded gently.“How?”He took a deep breath. “When I came back, the first thing that I did was look for you. But you moved and didn’t leave a forwarding address. I didn’t have your number. I have a faint idea how you look like. But other than that, I had no clue how to really find you.“When Denise mentioned that sh
I remembered before I left, I asked her to write a diary for me so I could read it when I return.I felt like my heart just broke inside my ribcage. She had kept her promise.I took the diary and climbed up on the bench to sit on top of the table, facing the lake.I flipped through the pages and started reading the words that she wrote for me.Dear Hunter…I don’t know how long I sat there, reading every word. She wrote me almost every day, telling me everything that happened to her since I left.Dear Hunter,Today, we needed to move houses. Meredith could no longer afford this house. I totally understand that. My mother didn’t exactly leave her with a huge inheritance. I was just worried about how you would find me. I didn’t know how to reach you so I could give you my new address. But I know… you would find me. No matter what. We would
Gabriel – the messenger and communicatorHunter. It hadn’t been fair that Allison and I lost so much of the time we could have been together. We could have been happy since the day I returned from my surgery. But instead, I spent a great deal of time nursing my broken heart because I thought she had moved on without me. I thought she didn’t keep her promise to wait for me.But we were both victims of Anderson’s lie and treachery. He was so desperate to have her, he resorted to stupid methods to get her attention.I remembered when I was trapped in the cabin with Allison, I was still so angry… at her… at Anderson… at the world. I was harboring all these ill feelings because I couldn’t accept the fact that I went through all the trouble of a corneal transplant for her, only to find that she was already dating somebody else. But in spite of my anger, I wasn’t
When I came back from the lake house, my diary was gone. Chaise had all night to go through my stuff if Denise wasn’t looking. He’d seen me write on it before. He must have recognized it. I guess curiosity got the better of him.If he started reading it, then would he know… he would know who I was writing it for. He would know who the guy he was hoping to replace in my heart was.I took the bus to CRC and got there in fifteen minutes. The moment I stepped into the grounds, memories of Hunter flooded back to me. I remembered how we fell in love in this unlikely place. Here, we both found the will to fight and live our lives again. Here lies a world where only the two of us existed… old souls, young hearts. As I approached the gate, I felt somebody pull my hand. I turned back and found Chaise staring back at me.“Chaise!”He pulled me towards the parking lot, without saying a word.“Chaise, are you o
