Chapter 1

Chapter 1 I want a divorce

Dr. Li gave me a warm smile and confirmed the news: I was pregnant.

I was stunned. My husband Ryder and I had been using contraception. He had emphasized multiple times that he didn't want a child.

My mind was in a whirl, but happiness took the dominant position. I had always dreamed of becoming a mother. I believed this was fate's arrangement.

I had to protect my child, whether my husband Ryder allowed it or not.

"Is something wrong? You don't seem very excited..." the doctor asked in puzzlement. I shook my head and told her I was just too shocked. I looked forward to being a mother more than anyone.

"That's wonderful, Mrs. At your next checkup, I suggest allowing your husband to accompany you. You know, with the father's involvement, the fetus will behave very obediently," the doctor suggested with a smile.

I nodded and smiled as I said goodbye to the doctor.

In the car, I wasn't sure about Ryder's attitude. In fact, our marriage was not like that of a traditionally happy couple.

My husband Ryder had never been very close to me. We didn't marry for love; our union was merely a business deal, a contract between our two families.

I was the heir to the renowned Harlington Corporation, a global conglomerate founded by my ancestors. But its glory only lingered in the past. Many of its management systems were constrained by the patriarchal traditions of the family, so it ultimately didn't go far in the technologically advanced modern society. My parents were desperate to save the company from bankruptcy, arranging for me to marry Ryder, the heir to a leading technology company. They hoped this marriage would facilitate a merger, saving Harlington from bankruptcy.

Ryder's group also needed us.

Initially, the marriage wasn't meant for me. My sister Sage and Ryder had known each other since childhood; they were childhood sweethearts, the perfect lovers. But three years ago, when they were about to get engaged, Sage ran away in fear. I don't know what she was afraid of, but my father thought of me, living in the small town.

You didn't misread that - I didn't always live in the city. I only joined the Harlington family at 16. Sage and I were twins, but I was born two minutes earlier than her. However, my grandmother and grandfather placed great importance on fortune-telling. The fortune-teller they consulted predicted that my destiny would clash with Harlington's fortunes, so I was sent away.

Before I was 16, I was fostered at a friend's house in my mother's small town. My mother's friend was an alcoholic, and her house had different men over every night. Every night I was afraid to sleep, fearing one of them would barge into my room. I hated the smell of alcohol. One day, I called my mother in fear, but she coldly told me the fortune-teller said I couldn't return until I was 16.

Sixteen years was enough time for me to understand the fact that my parents didn't love me. Even my departure didn't make Harlington Corporation better, but they showed no regret.

But I still belonged to the Harlington family, and they had a thousand reasons to ruin my life.

There was one important reason I obeyed the arrangement: I loved Ryder. When I joined the Harlington family at 16, at the family's evening banquet with all the celebrities present, Ryder was the only one who smiled at me. He was like a prince. But I hid my feelings very well because Sage's possessiveness toward Ryder was intense, and anyone would fear being her target.

Ryder was abandoned by Sage. I believed the gods of fate had finally favored me. My past misery would be erased the moment I married Ryder, and everything would get better and better.

But at the wedding, when he lifted my veil, his icy gaze completely dispelled the beautiful illusion in my heart.

Perhaps that fortune-teller was right - my destiny was cursed, but it only cursed me alone.

The car pulled up in front of the familiar luxurious villa. Taking a deep breath, I walked into our opulent mansion and began to ponder how to tell Ryder. I dialed his number.

At that moment, my phone rang with an incoming message. When I saw Sage's name on the screen, my hands trembled. I hesitated, my heart screaming not to open it, but my curiosity won out.

Those photos made my blood run cold. Sage and Ryder were embracing, kissing, and lying on the bed together. Those images were seared into my mind like a branding iron.

I felt my phone slip from my hands, immobilized, my heart shattered into countless pieces. The room spun around me, and I felt myself on the verge of collapse.

How could they do this to me? My own sister, my husband. The pain suffocated me, crushed me.

I don't know how long I stood there, agonized, until finally my legs gave out and I collapsed to the floor, surrounded by the shattered remnants of my marriage and broken heart.

Fate was so cruel. Everyone knew Sage was a venomous snake, yet everyone loved her. I was always praised for having all these wonderful qualities, but I was always the one cast aside.

I had endured enough. Sage's return could allow the partnership between Harlington and Ryder's company to continue. I could ask for a divorce.

I rubbed my belly - I didn't want my child to always live a life of resentment. I would take them far away from here.

Suddenly, Ryder walked in through the doorway, even wearing the same clothes from when he was with Sage. My stomach immediately turned.

"Were you with Sage?" I looked at him resolutely and asked.

His expression changed from annoyance to shock. "How did you find out?"

I walked over and slapped him hard across the face. "You bastard!"

He grabbed my arm, his powerful grip making me wince in pain. "What are you doing, Aubrey? What's wrong with you? Have you gone mad?!"

I struggled to break free. "Have you been deceiving me? You were cheating on me with my own sister!" I felt like vomiting, my stomach churning with rage and anguish.

He had an innocent look on his face. "What are you talking about? I don't know what you're insinuating, but it's not true."

I almost laughed at his Oscar-worthy performance. "You're a great actor, Ryder. A great player. But I can see right through you now."

I saw his brow furrow again as he shoved me away impatiently, refusing to engage. I immediately blocked his path.

"Did you ever love me, Ryder?" I felt tears streaming down my cheeks, my body shuddering with sobs. I knew I was seeking confirmation of an answer I already knew, but I still asked.

"I only needed to take care of you. That's all," he declared coldly. "Because that's what our marriage dictated."

His words felt like a knife in my heart. I laughed, completely disillusioned now.

I stated resolutely, "I want a divorce."

He suddenly released his grip on my arm, his expression one of disbelief. "You can't be serious?"

"Oh, I'm serious," I stared defiantly into his blazing eyes and spat in his face. "We should get divorced."

I would rather raise our child alone than be with a man like him - a deceiver, a liar, a manipulator.

I love this book, I found this by chance and I am impressed. I even spent money to open chapters and I don’t do that. Love that it’s less than 100 chapters and definitely worth a read.

This book is about love, loss, revenge and reconciliation. The author developed the characters that made the story believable and cohesive. It was objective and I appreciated the style. It’s also just the perfect length of a story not to wander about unnecessary ideas to keep the readers hooked.

Chapter 2 Was she rebelling?
Aubrey's pov :"Should I let you know about the settlement amount?"The lawyer explained the settlement amount, droning on about assets and finances."I don't want anything from him," I refused emotionlessly. The lawyer raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure? You're entitled to half of his assets, including the house and investments."I shook my head. I have my own company, one that I run with my best friend, Sophia. As the heir, I received it as my share. I have enough money to take care of myself and my child. The lawyer nodded. "Very well, then. Let's finalise the papers."The next day, Sophia arrived at my doorstep, looking every bit the classy lady she was. Her long, curly brown hair cascaded down her back, and her bright green eyes shined. She wore a tailored white pantsuit, her heels clicking on the floor as she rushed to my side."Aubrey, darling!" she exclaimed, enveloping me in a tight hug.I burst into tears, allowing myself to release the emotions I'd been holding back. Chapter 3 A warning to her
Aubrey's pov ;I was having fun, laughing and joking with Alex and Sophia, but I was cautious. My pregnancy was still a secret, and I didn't want to risk anything. They dragged me to dance, and I obliged, but only for a little while. I didn't want to overexert myself. When they offered me a drink, I declined, citing a headache. They teased me for it but I just smiled and changed the subject. I wanted to share my happy news with them, but not yet. The last seven days had been deeply stressful for me and I wasn't ready to open up yet.Sophia playfully nudged me while whispering, "Hey, Rey, I think that guy is checking you out."I snapped back to reality and followed her gaze. The man staring at me was handsome, with a charming smile, but he wasn't Ryder. I hated myself for even thinking of him.The man caught my eye and smiled, but I quickly looked away, signalling him that I wasn't interested. I didn't want to encourage him or lead him on. I just wanted to enjoy my night with my friend

Chapter 4 My can't he leave me alone?
Aubrey's pov ;I didn't expect much for the next few days. I didn't go back to that scumbag, and I didn't feel afraid of his warnings either. Every time I thought about him, I felt angry and confused. Why was he so desperate to make me go back to him when he was the one who cheated on me? It didn't make any sense. His betrayal still hurts very much, like a fresh wound that refused to heal. I had given him everything—my trust, my love, my time. And he threw it all away for some cheap fling. Now he had the audacity to act like I was the one who needed to come crawling back? It was infuriating.I replayed our last conversation over and over in my mind, trying to find some hidden meaning or clue that might explain his behaviour. But there was nothing. The more I thought about it, the more I realised that he was just trying to threaten me. He didn't want me back because he loved me. He wanted me back because he couldn't stand the idea of me moving on and being happy without him. It was all

Chapter 5 I will divorce you!
Aubrey's POV :I didn't bother knocking. The door slammed behind me as I barged into Ryder's house—our house, though it felt anything but mine now. My heart pounded, fueled by fury, exhaustion, and a deep, bone-crushing frustration that had built up over weeks. I stormed through the hallway until I found him in the bedroom, casually pulling a shirt over his head.He glanced at me, a smirk instantly curling his lips. That arrogant, infuriating smirk that always made me want to slap it right off his face."Something on your mind, Aubrey?" His tone was mocking, like he knew exactly what I was about to say.I clenched my fists, the words tumbling out before I could stop them. "Why did you do it, Ryder?"His smirk widened. "You'll have to be more specific, darling."I took a step closer, my anger pushing me forward. "Don't play dumb with me, Ryder. You know exactly what I'm talking about."He didn't even blink. Instead, he stepped closer, closing the gap between us. His hand shot out, fing

Chapter 6 Surprise confession
Aubrey's pov ;Next day, I hastily packed a few essential things and rushed to Sophia's house with my heart racing with apprehension.Once we were inside, I collapsed onto her couch, feeling utterly exhausted from replaying everything over and over again in my head. Sophia disappeared into the kitchen and returned with a glass of water."Here, drink this and relax," she said softly, taking a seat next to me and rubbing my back. "You need to stay hydrated, especially now."I took a small sip, feeling the cool water soothe my dry throat. Sophia placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. "I can't believe this," she fumed angrily. "That bastard Ryder has no right to do this to you. How could he stoop so low?"Tears welled up in my eyes again as the pain and betrayal washed over me anew. "I don't know," I whispered brokenly. "He's trying to ruin my life, Sophia. I just don't understand why he's doing this. Why can't he just leave me alone?"She cursed under her breath before speaking again i

Chapter 7 Going back to him?
Aubrey's pov ;I collapsed onto the couch, drenched in sweat and panting heavily. The pressure of his threats and the upheaval of the evening felt almost suffocating. Closing my eyes, I focused on slowing my breathing and calming my racing heart. With a shaky breath, I leaned back when Sophia's voice cut through the haze of my thoughts. "Aubrey, are you okay? What happened?"She rushed into the living room and pulled me into a tight hug, her eyes scanning my face for any signs of injury."I just saw Ryder existing through the hallways. Why was he here? Did he do something to you?" She asked worriedly.I could barely manage a shake of my head, my throat closing up. I was too overwhelmed to speak, my whole body was trembling.Sophia's concern deepened as she felt my forehead. "You're sweating so much. We need to get you to the doctor.""I'm fine," I tried to protest weakly, but Sophia wasn't having any of it."No, you're not fine," she said firmly, already pulling me toward the door. "W

Chapter 9 Losing my baby
Aubrey's pov ;The incessant beeping of medical machines pierced through the darkness, slowly pulling me back to consciousness. My mind felt foggy and disoriented, and my body was heavy with exhaustion. With great effort, I pried open my heavy eyelids, only to be met with harsh fluorescent lights casting stark shadows on the walls. The sterile smell of antiseptic filled the air, and every sound seemed amplified in the stillness. When I tried to move, a sharp pain shot through my abdomen, immobilising me. Confused, I looked down and saw tubes and wires snaking out from under the thin hospital gown covering my body. The IV drip in my arm and the heart monitor on my finger confirmed my fears—I was in a hospital.Just then, the door creaked open, and a doctor in a crisp white coat entered. His expression was grave as he walked towards my bed and stood over me with gentle eyes."How are you feeling?" his voice was soft but serious.I struggled to speak because my throat was dry and raw. Chapter 10 You want divorce, right?
Aubrey's pov ;The doctor entered the room once more, his expression solemn and his demeanor cautious. He took a measured step towards my bedside, his eyes reflecting deep concern. Beside me, Sophia stood with a worried face."Aubrey," the doctor began gently, "you need to stay here for a while. Your body needs time to recover."Tears still stained my cheeks as I shook my head vehemently. "No. I don't want to stay here. I want to go home."Sophia interjected, trying to reason with me. "Aubrey, please. You need to listen. The doctor knows what's best."But I was firm in my decision. "I don't want to stay. Just let me go."The doctor's expression hardened slightly as he looked at me. "There's something important I need to tell you, something you need to understand."Panic gripped me as I asked, barely able to form the words, "What is it?"Taking a deep breath, the doctor spoke gravely. "The miscarriage has caused severe complications. The trauma to your body was significant, and there w
