ANYA

I stepped into the house, my heart still pounding in my chest. My parents, already dressed and about to leave, stopped in their tracks when they saw me. Their eyes widened in shock.

“Anya?” My father’s voice was sharp, demanding. “What happened? How are you here?”

I swallowed, trying to steady my voice. “Hunter had no choice but to let me go.”

My mother gasped and rushed toward me, pulling me into a tight hug. I stood stiff for a moment before finally sinking into her warmth.

“It’s okay now, baby,” she whispered. “You’re home. You’re safe.”

I nodded numbly and pulled away, mumbling something about going to my room. My legs felt like lead as I walked upstairs, my body drained, my mind spinning.

As soon as I entered my room, I shut the door and leaned against it, closing my eyes. My thoughts swirled, replaying everything.

The first time I met Hunter, the night I had walked up to him at that bar and asked him to marry me like a fool,

ANYA Mark looked me in the eye as he continued, “Hunter could have killed that guy if he wanted to, Anya. He could have let him bleed to death. After all, he had enough reason to. But he didn’t. He let him live. He didn’t want your name to be connected to a murder. He could have ended that guy’s life in seconds, but he chose not to. Why? Because Hunter isn’t a monster. You keep thinking of him as this ruthless killer, but he’s not the kind of man who goes around killing harmless people for no reason.” I let out a shaky breath. “Then who does he kill, Mark?” Mark’s eyes didn’t waver. “Hunter probably only kills when he has to. When he’s protecting someone he loves.” I froze. The words sank deep into my chest, making my heart pound painfully. Protecting someone he loves. I thought back to Panama. The blood. The gunfire. The bodies. Hunter had killed every single one of them. I had seen it with my own eyes—the cold, calculated way he pulled the trigger, how he never hes

CROSS My phone rang late at night. I was already in bed, exhausted from the mess of the past few days, but when I saw the caller ID, I sat up immediately. Bernice. She was supposed to be sleeping at a friend's and never called me at this time unless something was terribly wrong. My stomach tightened as I picked up the call. "Bernice?" I barely got her name out before I heard her broken sobs through the phone. "Cross," she whispered, her voice shaking. "I'm in trouble. Please help me." My blood ran cold. "What happened? Where are you?" "At a club. I...." She sucked in a shaky breath. "I'm hiding in the toilet. I'm… I’m naked, Cross. I don't have anything on me." A sharp, suffocating pressure crushed my chest. "What?" I shot to my feet, already grabbing my car keys. "Who the hell did this to you?" She let out a sob. "Hunter." I gritted my teeth. Hunter. I didn’t wait to hear more. I hurried into her room and ran out of the house, my heart pounding as I sped

HUNTER I stared down at the divorce papers on my desk, my fingers tightening around the pen. The ink was still fresh from my signature, the final mark that would officially sever whatever bond I had left with Anya. This is for the best. I told myself as I leaned back, my jaw clenched. The past few days had been a storm of chaos, and betrayal. I had given Anya chances but they obviously meant nothing to her. And now, I was done. I pulled out my phone and dialed one of my men. "Is Anya at home?" I asked, my voice calm. There was a pause. Then his voice came through, tense. "Sir… Anya’s been taken." My heart stopped. "What?" My voice came out low, dangerous. "She’s been kidnapped. Just a few minutes ago. I...." I didn’t hear the rest. I already knew who it was. Cross. That son of a bitch. I should have handled him a long time ago. I should have made sure he never had the chance to breathe, let alone touch what was mine. I clenched my jaw, my grip on the phon

My chest ached, as if someone had reached inside and crushed my heart with their bare hands. A soft knock came at the door. "Anya," my brother Mark’s voice was gentle, filled with concern. "Talk to me." I didn’t respond. I couldn’t. How could I find the words to explain the storm inside me? He sighed. "I know you're hurting. But shutting everyone out won’t help." Still, I said nothing. I just kept staring at the papers, my tears dripping onto them, smudging the ink. After a long pause, I heard him exhale deeply. "Fine. I’ll give you some time," he said, his footsteps retreating. ANYA As soon as Mark dropped me off in front of Hunter’s house, I turned to him and said, "Go home." He hesitated. "Are you sure?" I nodded, forcing confidence into my voice. "Yes. I need to do this alone." Mark sighed but didn’t argue. "Call me if you need me." I watched his car disappear down the road before turning to face the towering gates of Hunter’s house. The guard at the gate recognized me and after a brief hesitation, he stepped aside. "You can go in, ma’am." I whispered a quick thanks and hurried inside. The moment I reached the front door, I grabbed the handle, but it wouldn’t budge. Locked. I knocked. No answer. A lump formed in my throat. I turned to the few bodyguards stationed around the compound. "Where’s Hunter?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. One of them, a tall, muscular man, shook his head. "He went out." "Where?" "We don’t know, ma’am." I clenched my jaw. They must know. They just won’t tell me. I pulled out my phone and

My heart skipped a beat. The door swung open, and for a moment, I froze. Was this it? Was he giving me one last chance? Without thinking, I ran. My feet barely touched the ground as I dashed toward the car, throwing myself inside and shutting the door behind me. My hands trembled as I wiped my tears away, trying to compose myself. Hunter said nothing. He sat there, his head resting against the seat, eyes closed. His face was calm, unreadable, but something about him felt distant, like he wasn’t truly there. ANYA When I woke up, the first thing I noticed was that I was alone. The space beside me on the bed was empty. Cold. For a moment, I didn’t move. I just lay there, listening to the quietness of the room, my heart heavy with disappointment. Last night, I had fallen asleep beside Hunter, hoping that he would hold me, that he would listen to my words, that maybe… just maybe, he would let me back into his heart. But he was gone. I sat up slowly, my throat tight, but then, I laid back on the bed, putting my face on the spot Hunter had slept in. I closed my eyes, inhaling his scent. I felt wonderful as I relieved the first time Hunter had taken me out on a date and how magical it had been. I opened my eyes with a smile on my face but it disappeared all too quickly as reality hit me faster than I expected. ANYA Valentine’s Day; The day of lovers, the day I had been waiting for with my heart in my throat and dreams in my eyes. Today was going to be my day. My perfect day. I rushed into the bar, my heart pounding in anticipation. The sight of Cross made my breath catch, as it always did. He was sitting there, looking effortlessly perfect. His hair was slightly messy, his smile casually charming, and his presence magnetic. I had loved him since high school, and even now, in college, that love hadn’t faded. If anything, it had only grown stronger. He was the guy all the girls wanted, yet somehow, he remained single. That was part of his charm...unreachable, mysterious, untouchable. But not to me. I believed I had a chance. I wasn’t supposed to school at Kings college. My parents had wanted me to attend a more prestigious one, but I had whined, begged, and complained until they sent me there.....where Cross was. To me, nothing mattered more than being near him. Yesterday, I had done

HUNTER The moment Anya walked out, a dark, uncontrollable rage surged through me. I clenched my fists so hard my knuckles turned white, and before I could stop myself, I drove my fist straight into the wall again. Pain shot up my arm, but I barely felt it. The anger burning inside me was far worse. How could she? After everything I had done just for her, after everything I had given up....she still chose to believe I was a monster. She thought I had tried to kill Evans. She thought I was capable of breaking my promise to her? I had expected anger. I had expected stubbornness. But I hadn’t expected her to look at me with that kind of hatred in her eyes. That was what hurt the most. I raked a hand through my hair, pacing the room like a caged animal. Sleep had been impossible last night. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw her face, her tears, the way her body trembled with so much pain and fear. I could have forced her to stay. I could have made sure she never walked
