The faint sound of her granddaughter's laughter could be heard in the distance. Arthur Quirino rose from his seat and left Antony. He walked out of the study only to see Flavia walking in the arms of Altezza Quirino, Arthur's niece.
"Are you back?" Arthur asked his granddaughter.
Flavia and her sparkling golden eyes nodded cheerfully.
"Uncle, how are you?" Altezza came closer and hugged Arthur before kissing his left and right cheeks.
"Okay. I'm doing well." Arthur replied happily. "It's been a long time since I've seen you..." He complained softly.
"I've been busy working at the headquarters lately. So I haven't had time to visit Kansas." She explained briefly. "Where's aunty?" Altezza looked around for the middle-aged woman who was none other than Arthur's wife.
"Maybe she's in the kitchen." Arthur said again. Then without saying goodbye Altezza walked towards the kitchen in search of her aunt. "Did you have a nice outing?" Arthur asked his granddaughter. Flavia nodded enthusiastically and walked into her grandfather's arms, both of them following where Altezza had gone.
A few steps before entering the kitchen area, Flavia's cell phone rang. On the square screen was a photo of a girl Arthur recognized.
"From Abigail, may I take it?" Her polite permission was answered by the grandfather's slow nod.
Flavia walked through the kitchen and waved goodbye to her grandmother and uncle. She directed her feet towards the gazebo at the back of the house as she picked up the video call from her best friend.
"What took you so long to pick it up. What are you doing?" Abigail complained in greeting.
"I'm walking." Flavia replied innocently. "Are you going for a walk with Aunty?" She asked curiously. The screen showed Abigail nodding her head in response.
"If only you were here, I wouldn't be so upset." Abigail complained again.
"Why, you ended up being left alone again?" Abigail again answered Flavia's question with a nod. Flavia then laughed mockingly. "Then I'm better off than you." She said with deliberate bragging. "I just got back from playing with Uncle Al. And he bought me a lot of stuff." She continued with a deliberate attempt to stir things up.
"How arrogant of you, just because you have a rich uncle." She laughed.
Flavia laughed at Abigail's complaint. When she heard steps approaching, Flavia turned her head and saw her uncle walking towards her.
"Shall I introduce you to my uncle?" Asked Flavia pointing the camera at her uncle. "Meet, the man who is still happy to be single." She said as she pulled Altezza closer.
Altezza frowned at her cousin for a moment before turning her gaze to the screen.
"Hi!" Altezza waved his hand in a friendly manner.
Abigail looked wide-eyed at her best friend's uncle. They had never met in person, and this was also the first time they had made a video call. But Flavia had often shown her pictures of her uncle, Altezza Quirino. And still, talking to the handsome man in person made her giddy.
"Uncle, are you really single?" She asked after regaining consciousness. Altezza nodded his head behind Flavia's head. "How can a handsome man like you still be single? Aren't there any women who like you?" Abigail asked again in a mocking tone.
Altezza chuckled. "Who said such a stupid thing?" Altezza asked back. "I'm single not because no one wants me. But because I choose to be alone." Altezza replied flatly. "You guys are still little, so you won't understand what I'm saying." He continued in a mocking tone to which Abigail replied by rolling her eyes.
A moment later, Altezza's forehead creased deeply and looked at Abigail with a probing gaze. "Your face, why doesn't it look familiar?" Altezza muttered softly.
Abigail snorted. "No need to flirt with teenagers my age. I'm too young for you to seduce." She continued in her mature manner.
Altezza replied to Abigail's words with a soft chuckle.
"If you act like that, it makes you look familiar." Continued Altezza who was now reminded of someone.
"Who does she look like, Uncle?" This time it was Flavia who asked out of curiosity.
"Have you finished eating?" Asked another voice that was not visible in the camera.
"Aunty... !!" Flavia shrieked then. Then the screen rotated to reveal an older version of Abigail.
"Claire?!" That surprised voice just came out of Altezza's mouth.
"You knows aunty Claire?" Flavia looked back at her uncle with a surprised expression.
Although her current appearance looked different from the appearance Altezza was used to seeing, it was clear that the girl who did not realize she was on camera was Claire Hampton. One of her subordinates in the Kansas branch of his company.
Claire Hampton, with her long wavy black hair flowing beautifully, was seen having a serious conversation with a male figure. The girl who is usually seen wearing a neat shirt with polite pants or skirt, now appears to be wearing a bright red oversized sweater, with black skinny skirt pants. She looks casual, beautiful, and looks like a teenager instead of a quarter-century-old girl.
"Aunty!" Abigail called out. The person she called turned her head. Her face looked fresh with no makeup except for the cherry color on her full and adorable looking lips. She raised her hand to pause for a moment and went back to talking to the man in front of her. Then her attention was completely turned to Abigail, still unaware that she was being secretly filmed and watched by the two people on the other side of the call. "Do you know a man named Altezza?"
Altezza could see that the girl's eyebrows were drawn together. "Altezza? Altezza who?" She asked confused.
The camera then pans back to show a younger version of Claire's face before finally panning to an adult Claire so that she can see the figure her niece is referring to.
"Sir. What are you doing with Flavia?" Asked Claire Hampton confusedly as she saw Altezza and Flavia waving at her simultaneously.
"You know Flavia?" Altezza asked back. Claire nodded. "She's my niece." Altezza replied as he put his big hand on Flavia's shoulder. "So that girl is your niece?" He asked Claire. This time it was Claire who nodded. "No wonder I find her face familiar. And her stubbornness, I guess it's inherited from you." Altezza teased with his handsome smile. Claire laughed crisply at the insinuation, but Abigail spluttered while squinting at Altezza.
Long after the video call ended, Altezza looked at Flavia questioningly. "You and Claire, have you known each other for a long time?"
Flavia nodded her head. "Yes, Abigail introduced us first. Aunty Claire is a good person. Beautiful, kind and she treats me a lot too."
"It's a small world, isn't it?" Altezza said with a mocking smile. "Did you know that Claire was one of your father's employees?" Altezza's question came out as Antony and Arthur entered the dining room. "She works at your father's company in Kansas."
"Who?" Arthur asked curiously.
"You know Abigail?" Altezza asked, to which Arthur nodded in response.
"We knew her very well. That girl comes to the house often. What's wrong with her?" Arthur asked curiously.
"Her aunt, Claire Hampton is one of Antony's employees. She's Shelly's girl."
"I know." Arthur replied flatly. "And I also happen to know who Abigail's father and grandfather are."
"How so?" Altezza asked in surprise.
"Abigail's grandfather, or Claire's father, used to be my partner." Arthur informed. "He's one of the raw material suppliers to our company. You know CH Cement? The owner is named Christoper Hampton. He's Leonard Hampton's father, Abigail's father."
Altezza frowned. "That Leonard? The cement, brick and tile supplier?" Altezza asked, to which Arthur nodded. "For God's sake. What a small world this is. Maybe this is the destiny that God made for me." Altezza looked at his nephew again with a big smile.
"What fate?" Flavia looked at her uncle in confusion.
"Fate made it easier for me to get Claire." Altezza replied with enthusiasm on his face. "Later, when I come to Kansas, I swear I'll approach her even harder."
"No!" Flavia shrieked loudly, startling everyone in the dining room. Including her grandmother who had just walked in with dinner.
"Why?" asked Altezza in surprise.
Flavia shyly glanced at her father. "That's... mmm... that’s...." The girl stammered.
"Already, you take it easy. Don't you like Claire?" Altezza asked again. Flavia nodded enthusiastically. "If she becomes my wife, that means she'll also become your aunt. And if that happens, I promise I'll share her with you. Share her affection, I mean." Altezza joked with both eyebrows raised up and down in a seductive manner.
Flavia even spluttered at that
While at the same time, Antony chose to listen to his daughter and cousin's interactions in silence.
Claire? Aunty?
Instantly, the name made him think of the girl in the black shirt, black skirt with her nonchalant gaze that Antony was attracted to.
Has it been a few weeks since that name disappeared from her mind? And now when the name was mentioned again, the figure came back into her mind's eye.
Somehow Antony was able to breathe in the fragrance of the girl's body again and suddenly his pants felt constricting again.
One word, one name, one image, made his mind wander to things that only existed in the minds of grown men.
Quirino's residence a few days before Antony went to KansasThe elderly couple looked at their grandson with pleading eyes. "We want you to come with us to Italy. It won't be long, just two weeks. After your aunt's wedding, we'll rest for a few days before coming back here." Arthur Quirino coaxed his grandson.Brianna Quirino also nodded her head. "The midterms are still a long time away anyway. There's still plenty of time to study." She said softly. The middle-aged couple were planning to attend the wedding of one of their distant cousins in Italy and were persuading their only granddaughter to come with them.Considering that the party preparations and family gatherings afterward would take days, the Quirino couple wanted to leave early before the D-day and enjoy a few days off afterward before returning to America. They did this in consideration of their age. But apparently, their plans for this trip were not met with enthusiasm by their granddaughter as Flavia did not seem excite
"We apologize for coming here to trouble you." Brianna started the conversation. "My husband and I were about to leave to attend the wedding of one of our relatives. My husband's cousin is very ill at the moment, and is getting his youngest daughter married at the same time. But our granddaughter Flavia doesn't want to come with us." Brianna paused to let Julie understand where she was going with this. "As Flavia might have told you. She's an only child, and we only have one son, and he lives separately from us. So if we leave Flavia home alone, we feel anxious. Even though we have a housekeeper we can trust, but still, as a parent I feel uneasy." Julie nodded her head in agreement. "So if you don't mind, I would like to ask for your approval for Abigail to accompany my granddaughter in our home." She asked at the end of the sentence."Yes, I can understand that." Abigail's grandmother replied softly. "That's fine with me. But I apologize in advance, it's not that I don't trust the ma
Sunday morning, Claire and Abigail drove Julie to the airport. In accordance with Julie's request, after taking the suitcases out of the car, they left the airport immediately."So, what about Flavia?" She asked when they were on a quiet street.Abigail shrugged without turning to her aunt. "Flavia went to Manhattan last Saturday to drop off her grandparents. She said she was going back to Kansas with her father.""So, she'll be staying with her dad while her grandparents are gone?" Asked Claire again curiously. Abigail replied with a shake of her head. "And then?""Then what?""Then what's the problem with her living with her father? Why do you seem to dislike that idea?""There is no problem. It's just that I have doubts about their relationship. Flavia says that she likes living with her father, but she also says that she feels awkward." Abigail replied with a chuckle. "Besides, even if her father lived with her, it wouldn't be a guarantee that he would always be with her. Flavia s
Fifteen minutes later, Claire had finished her work and shut down her computer just as the sound of footsteps could be heard approaching from behind her back.Claire turned her head and saw Shelly smiling at her. "Overtime at the end too?" The near middle-aged woman teased.Claire shrugged. "Do I have any choice but to work late into the night like this? I'm just an employee, if I refuse my boss's orders I'll be fired. And I don't want that to happen." She replied carelessly."Good girl." Shelly replied as she patted Claire's shoulder. "Then, I'll go first." She said and Claire just nodded. The sound of the CPU machine's fan now dominated the quiet room along with the sound of Shelly's footsteps getting further away. Unconsciously, the silence made Claire shudder in horror. It turned out to be creepy to be alone in a silent room.Honestly, during her time at Coskun Company, this was the first time Claire worked late into the night. Claire is a disciplined and punctual person, so she l
In Claire's car.Right after the car door closed, Abigail squealed as she shook Claire's arm. "Oh my goodness auntie..." Her loud voice made Claire immediately cover her ears. "Why didn't you say that Claire's father is crazy handsome?" she blurted out with both hands patting her cheeks.Claire glanced at her niece as she raised one eyebrow before releasing her handbrake and driving the car again. "I don't understand what you're thinking. So is Flavia's father handsome or crazy?" She said flatly.Abigail spluttered at her aunt's words. "Don't play dumb. Next time, if you see a handsome man, share it with me. Don't collect it for yourself." " Abigail complained with pouting lips.Claire rolled her eyes. "You think men are objects, you can just collect them. Besides, he's the same age as your father, do you really intend to attract old men?"Abigail clucked loudly. "Who said that I was going to lure an old man? I mean, if one day you
The little restaurant was filled with many customers. Claire chose a square-shaped seat next to the window, allowing Abigail to sit in the corner so that the girl could not get in and out freely. Antony did the same to Flavia so that he ended up sitting directly opposite Claire.Claire handed the menu to Antony while she looked at the menu together with Abigail. It was obvious that Antony had never eaten at a little restaurant like this. While he was used to cooking and homemade-cooked meals made by his mother or the family's chosen chef, he's used to eating at fancy restaurants or his family's hotel restaurants. If it's urgent, Antony prefers to buy take away or delivery order. Antony does not like to eat food that he does not know the hygiene of.But out of respect for Claire and seeing how enthusiastic Flavia was, Antony refrained from pulling them all out of the place and taking them to a better restaurant."The food here is very hygienic, Sir. I made sure of it myself. Their kitc
Claire walked into the building while massaging her temples. Her head was throbbing with pain because she had not slept well last night and it was all because the two teenagers staying at her place were constantly harassing her and only stopped at eleven o'clock at night when they fell asleep. While afterward Claire couldn't rest right away because she had to finish her report. As a result, it was only at two o'clock at night that he could climb into bed and even then he did not know what time he actually fell asleep. Meanwhile, at five in the morning he had to get up again to fulfill his obligations.Usually, if she stayed up late like that, Claire could steal an hour to an hour and a half to go back to sleep. But this time she couldn't because she had to make breakfast for the two teenagers. And the effects were just now being felt by Claire.Claire walked into her room. Eight o'clock was only five minutes away but the room was still quiet. Whereas usually at less than eight o'clock
Antony immediately frowned at the girl's question, but before he could ask, Claire spoke up again."It's not that I don't want to help. As I told you before. I'm not very close to Flavia. I'm afraid that instead of helping you get closer, I'll end up widening the gap between you. If you ask Sir Altezza for help, he can understand your characteristics and perhaps find a more appropriate solution."'Because I also want to approach you at the same time.' Antony replied in his head. 'Or are you actually able to read my intentions and this is your subtle form of rejection?' He asked again silently.Indeed, if you think about it with common sense, Antony's request to Claire doesn't make sense and Claire's advice is much more on point. But Antony is just that ruthless and impatient. Apart from wanting to regain Flavia's trust, Antony also wants to get Claire at the same time. And Claire's character was exactly what Antony had expected. She is not like most women who would use his request as
The two teenagers turned their heads simultaneously towards the aisle as they saw an ominous aura spread around them. Moreover, people were now looking in the same direction. Where the woman Flavia and Abigail had not expected to see had just appeared."Why is that woman there?" Abigail whispered to her best friend.Flavia who had been engrossed in her digital camera and taking pictures was now holding it languidly. "I don't know." She replied innocently. She looked back at the photo produced by her hand, choosing to ignore Abigail and her suspicions."Shall we go closer to them?" Abigail asked in a challenged tone.Flavia raised her head again and looked at her best friend with a furrowed brow. As Abigail started to take a step, Flavia held her back by holding Abigail's arm tightly and shaking her head."No, Abby." She said.Instead, she pulled her best friend's hand to walk away from the reception room and left the hall by walking in the hotel's garden area to take some photos as a
"Full?" asked Claire with a furrowed brow.Antony deliberately re-emphasized his lower body so that Claire was wide-eyed. "You know what I mean, right?" Antony whispered in the girl's ear that inevitably made Claire shudder in horror. The man's lips teased her, starting to caress the side of her face so that she unconsciously looked up and gave him the opportunity to explore the slender recesses of her neck."Can I ask for my rights now?" he asked in a pleading tone.Claire shook her head."Why again now?" Antony asked in a whining tone."Your body stinks," Claire said as she wrinkled her nose. "Go take a shower." She ordered as she turned Antony around and pushed him into her room until he reached her bathroom.Antony wanted to resist, but seeing his wife's glare, he finally went in.What's wrong with his wife. Why is it so hard to conquer her? Instead of spending time kissing hot and wet, Claire pushed him into the shower. Antony had hoped they would move on to the next stage that h
"Those two women were the answer to my mother's prayers," she said, anger flaring in her voice.Antony was taken aback. "No, darling. Your mother's prayers will never be answered like that.""Alright, they did come with certain intentions. But can't you see me? To me, they are nobody. In my eyes, in my heart, in my mind, there is only Claire, Claire, and Claire. There's no other woman." Antony coaxed her in a soothing tone.Claire couldn't help but chuckle at that. "Don't sweet-talk me," she replied with a hint of amusement.Antony shook his head. He stepped closer to his wife. Claire still had her arms crossed over her chest, and to maintain some distance from him, she leaned her body back."I'm not sweet-talking you, darling. I'm speaking the truth. If only there were experts who could read my mind and heart, you could ask them. I'm sure they would tell you the truth. And if they lied, I would bribe them to say what I want them to say," Antony said again.Claire rolled her eyes. Ant

Antony stopped his car outside Claire's house and unlocked the gate with the spare key he had kept for a long time.Claire's car hadn't moved from its spot. It was still there since the last time Antony visited his fiancée's home, before Claire's family took her back.Who knows? Maybe Claire could hear the gate opening or maybe not. But one thing was clear: his wife did not welcome him at all because Claire's house felt eerily silent. Was Gladwin playing a trick on him? Who knows if Claire was really back at her house. He opened the front door and stepped inside, greeting her. Once again, there was no response. When Antony noticed Claire's bedroom door slightly ajar, he walked in.Claire wasn't there. All that was left was the small suitcase she had brought from the hotel room."Claire, sweetheart," Antony called out again, but still, there was no answer.Could it be that Claire left again after dropping off her suitcase and saw Gladwin leave? he wondered to himself.Antony continued
Quickly, Anastasia ran after Antony. She called his name repeatedly, but Antony chose to ignore her until her stiletto heels finally brought her close to him. She immediately reached out and grabbed Antony's arm, but he harshly brushed her off."Antony, listen to me. Please. I'm really sorry. I apologize," she said in a whiny tone. The woman tried to grab Antony's hand again, but he pushed her away once more, causing her to fall and kneel on the cold marble floor. Not wanting to give up, Anastasia wrapped her arms around Antony's legs, forcing him to stop."I'm truly sorry," she pleaded again, her voice desperate. She begged for the man's compassion, finally realizing that everything Antony had said in the room earlier was no joke. "I... I..." She couldn't find the words. "I'm sorry, please forgive me," she begged, tears starting to wet her face.Antony looked down at her with a sharp gaze. "Do you realize that what you're doing has crossed the line?" he asked in his cold tone.Anasta
Antony arrived at a luxurious five-star hotel located not too far from his family's hotel. As soon as he parked his car, he headed straight to the room Letizia had mentioned when he contacted his cousin earlier.Inside the lavish room rented by his ex-wife sat Antony's mother, Brianna Quirino, alongside her husband, Mr. Arthur. Meanwhile, Letizia stood with her hip leaning against the bar chair, her arms crossed over her chest.Don't ask where her children and husband were. Antony guessed that his sister-in-law was waiting for them somewhere. The three family members displayed different expressions, surely with different thoughts filled with questions that might mirror what was in Antony's own mind.On the other side of the room, right above the sofa facing away from the window, two women sat side by side. One was Anastasia, a woman he had pretended to date for work purposes. The other was his ex-wife, the woman he once loved deeply, who had given him a beautiful and devoted daughter.
But then Claire tried to clear her mind. She refused to believe that her mother could be so cruel to her; if that were the case, Claire might end up resenting her mother for the rest of her life.Disloyal? She didn't care about that word. Her face was already free of makeup, and her hair had been released from the beautiful tiara she had worn earlier. Now, the makeup artists helped Claire start to unbutton the lovely gown she had worn, which had so many buttons down the back.Once everything was removed, Claire opened her suitcase, searching for clothes. She decided to clean herself up in the bathroom that was in the dressing room.Feeling refreshed after showering and washing her hair, Claire put on the clothes she had chosen: a pair of jeans and a loose shirt instead of the dress Antony had picked out for her to wear on their honeymoon, which they were supposed to take right after the reception she was now reluctant to attend. No, she wouldn't just surrender herself to her husband a
The events proceeded according to the instructions from the host.Happy? Of course, Claire was happy. Especially seeing Bella's silly antics, who didn't hesitate to liven up the event alongside Gladwin and some of his office friends invited to the wedding, which surprised them as well. After all, Claire's absence from the office had already been quite shocking, and now they were suddenly presented with news of a wedding they had never seen any signs of."I had my suspicions when our big boss showed up at my wedding, and it turns out he was after the cheese in the sandwich," Chand whispered when his friend arrived with his wife. Claire could only smile in response to that accusatory remark.A snippet of the song that Adaline was singing on stage made Claire and Antony hold hands tightly, hoping that no obstacles would disturb them in the future.Guests began to dwindle. Amidst welcoming guests, they also took several photo sessions—not just with colleagues but also to capture moments w
