Renewed with a kind of vigor for his start at life. Selene was all smiles as she walked into the halls of the school.
She’d greet almost every person she come across, giving a pleasant nod, hoping for the same reply or at least a hello.
But all she received were frowns and condescending gazes, with some clicking on their tongues and wincing upon catching sight of her.
It didn’t take long before her energy and liveliness finally faded, realizing she was doing something wrong, especially seeing how everyone avoided her the moment she stepped into the classroom, as if she carried the plague.
Because of this, she chose to sit at the far end of the room, same as what she usually did in her previous schools.
It seems no matter where she goes, her place will always be at the bottom.
It wasn’t that hard to see, considering she wore her normal white T-shirt, tight jeans, and worn out sneakers. Compared to the students there who donned fashionable clothing, with some being well-known brands, he only saw in magazines.
Only then did she recall what her friend Loraine told her, that most of the residents there were from rich families.
And here she was thinking she’d make new friends there, and have a wonderful school life. She heaved a sigh, shoulders dropping from the realization that her hopes of having a better start were impossible.
Selene caught a few whispers from a group of girls, sending meaningful gazes at her while giggling.
“Just look at that jacket.”
One girl murmured, throwing glances at her way.
“It’s so worn out.”
Another added, causing more laughter between them.
That got Selene checking herself and then back to the others who were now there. It was obvious she was the person they were talking about, considering her clothing were old and faded, unlike the rest of the people who were there.
Selene ended up lowering her head in shame, lips pursing from feeling so small. She tried shrugging it off and concentrate on her happy thoughts by staring out the windows, submerging herself in the view of giant trees, flowerbeds, and a few birds flying here and there.
She’d been so deep in her own little world, she did not notice the shadows towering over her until she gets a tap on her table, causing her to flinch and raise her head.
The sight of one familiar face was enough to put a smile on her, her gaze brightening upon seeing the fellow smiling at her.
“Hey, mind if we sit here?”
The man’s deep, playful voice got her to straighten in her seat. Somehow, him arriving there brought her energy back.
“Lucas! What are you doing here?”
Her glee returned, along with the glint in her eyes.
The guy and his group surrounded Selene, taking over the remaining seats there. This covered her from the sharp gaze of several groups of females that were there, making her more at ease.
“It seems we have the same first period.”
Lucas chuckled, sitting right next to her.
His friends remained looking in front, making sure the on lookers kept to themselves by throwing menacing gazes at anyone who dared to look at them.
“I didn’t know you also studied here.”
She giggled.
Finally, having removed the weight in her chest, she now can’t stop herself, elated at the thought there was still a chance for her.
“Isn’t she the girl from the diner?”
The clean shaven boy blurts out, eyes fluttering upon recognizing her.
Like before, the fellow had this playful smile on him, as if a little child gazing at a new toy.
“Selene, you remember Bruno, right?”
Lucas snaps his fingers, making the person nod.
“Hello there.”
She was quick to do the same, along with a wave of her hand in a friendly greeting.
Lucas’s finger then pointed to the others, who were now turned to them. Each having the same gaze as the first fellow.
“And the guy with the smug face is Joel, the grinning one is Samuel, and the smiling goofball is Bernard.”
He states with each.
All of them were keen to give a gesture of acknowledgement, together with a welcoming smile.
And with that, she became more relaxed, prompting more conversations between them. Until their classes started.
Being with the group gave her new strength, so she got filled with liveliness.
“Where are you guys going to have lunch?”
She cheerfully asks as they made their way out of their last class.
All the men gathered around Selene like guards, shielding her from prying eyes. So she was unaware of all the murderous gazes being thrown at her.
“We actually don’t have classes in the afternoon.”
Lucas sighed, putting on a weak smile as he glance at her.
That got his friends laughing, with Bruno sliding his arms on the guy’s shoulders playfully.
“Yeah, and Lucas here is grounded, so he needs to keep to his schedule.”
The fellow points out, pressing a finger on the man’s cheeks, causing the others to laugh seeing how Lucas’s face turned sour.
“That means going home after classes.”
Samuel murmured, throwing a teasing grin which cause another round of loud chortle from all of them, including Selene, who could not hold her own laughter at that point.
“Shut it. All of you.”
Lucas was already massaging his temple, head lowered to hide his embarrassment.
But hearing that spark Selene’s curiosity, especially after recollecting all about the things he heard about the guy from Loraine.
“I didn’t know that was possible for you.”
She absent-mindedly blurts out.
And here she thought after all the man’s achievements, he’d somehow be independent and all. So it came as a surprise hearing that.
“I have my reasons.”
A grin appeared on Lucas’s face.
In that moment, Selene turned silent when several visions flash before her eyes upon staring at the fellow.
Fire, blood, her aunt Pen screaming in tears. It was the same image she’d seen before, so she can’t help but furrow.
“Come on. I don’t want to get an earful again.”
Joel groaned, pulling the lot as they halted the minute they stepped out of the double doors.
“Sorry about this, Selene.”
Lucas gave her a pat on the shoulders, along with a weak smirk.
That snap Selene’s senses back to reality, shaking her head to wake from the daze of that sudden vision.
She forces a smile, eyes nearly closing from the effort.
“No worries.”
She says, waving at the group as they made their way to the parking lot.
“The cafeteria is just over there. You can’t miss it.”
Lucas points to the nearby building where most of the other students were gathering.
“I’ll see you guys tomorrow.”
With a nod, Selene waves goodbye to all of them, waiting until they disappeared from her sights before moving along.
Alone again, she finally notices the sharp stares from several females there, with some whispering behind her back. But thanks to Lucas and the others, she gathered enough courage to push through.
Aware of the attention and hostility being thrown her way, she understood the troubles that may come. So instead of going to the cafeteria, she chose a nearby tree with a stone fence around it, far from the rest of the people there.
After finding a pleasant shade to sit on, she takes out her lunch box that she prepared earlier. She savors her meal of boiled eggs, bread, and bacon, while enjoying the relaxing view of the wide field and trees in front of her.
All seems well, having nearly finished her food when she felt a drizzle on her shoulder. She shrugged it off at first until she caught the giggling of several voices behind her.
This forced her to look, swallowing hard upon glancing at the group of girls standing there. All of them having this condescending gaze and mischievous grin while looking down on her.
She realizes where the spray was coming from, seeing how they had their lips purse together, teeming with saliva.
Yet even with that, she remained smiling towards them, keeping her head and eyes low, but enough to get a glance.
“Can I help you?”
She asks in a soft and calm manner.
This caused all the girls to raise a brow, turning to each other with confused looks.
There were four of them, and all were just as gorgeous as the other, each flaunting a beauty of her own. One had long wavy blonde hair, a set of twins had straight black with one having a shoulder length cut, and the last was a red hair, sporting glamorous curls.
It seems the blonde was the leader, scoffing as she spat to the side before walking to her. She was quick to grab hold of Selene’s jacket, effortlessly pulling her to stand.
“You bitch! Do you even know who I am?”
She hissed, teeth grinding while giving her a murderous glare.
Selene froze, a frightening chill running down her spine, surprised by the sheer strength the person had. She did not think a person with such a petite and thin figure could lift her with just one arm.
She felt her tongue recede, immediately closing her eyes upon seeing the woman’s palm raise up high, preparing for a solid slap to her face.
“Let her go, Bernice.”
A deep voice thundered, stopping the act.
The other girls turned pale, retreating the minute they saw the man standing beside them, looking menacing with his brows furrowed and teeth bared.
“Stay out of this, Duncan.”
Bernice’s jaw snaps, a growl nearly escaping her.
“Or what?”
Duncan growled back, getting the attention of several people walking by.
They ended up in a staring competition, with neither one backing out of it. This cause a few onlookers to gather around, seeing the two dueling it out on with their stares.
In the end, it was the girl who surrendered, clicking her tongue as she let Selene go. But not before pushing her hard.
Selene’s scream aloud, having that stabbing sensation on her ankle from being shoved, losing her balance in the process because she could not shift her entire weight on one foot.
She braced her body by hugging herself, along with holding on to her breath to prepare for the fall.
But it never came, and the pain in her leg disappeared when her entirety became weightless. She heard a much deeper growl, forcing her to look.
She can’t help but gape, realizing she got encased in the man’s arms once more. This caused her heart to race, remembering the warm and protective sensation of the guy’s hold.
She nearly stopped breathing when their gaze met, her mind drawn by those dark eyes that seemed to pierce through her very soul.
“Are you all right?”
Worry etched on Duncan’s face after she remained silent for some time.
The sudden jolt from his voice and the man’s gentle shaking woke her from the daze she was having, thrusting her back into reality in a flash.
“Yes, thank you.”
Was all she can say, remembering the situation she was in.
“I warned you before, didn’t I?”
Duncan slowly put her down, but the stabbing pain remained, causing her to wobble when he let her go. This resulted in the man grab her once more, holding her waist to keep her from falling.
“Sorry. I did not understand what you meant back then.”
Selene bit her lower lip in shame. Not being able to fully grasp those words that were given to her.
Duncan heaved a sigh, shaking his head in disbelief.
“Almost all the girls around here are vying for that guy’s attention. And with you, a new girl, taking that from them means you are a great threat to them. And I can assure you, the women here will not show any mercy against their rivals.”
The man’s tone was grim and foreboding, causing another surge of fear crawling down on Selene’s spine.
She can’t help but swallow hard because of the large lump in her throat that suddenly appeared, knowing that her supposed peace and chance had truly crumbled, all because she held on to that wish of hers.
Selene pondered on the advice left to her by Duncan. The idea of avoiding her newly found friends caused her insides to twist and her stomach twitch.Rejection and avoidance were no stranger to her, and she cannot put it upon herself to do the same to others. Aware of the pain and sadness it brings.“You all right?”Loraine’s voice sounded like a hum. But it was enough to wake her from the sudden trance, making her move her hand in a circular motion, as she had been wiping the counter before all of that happened.“Yeah, just a bit worn out?”She was quick to answer, seeing how the girl raised a brow, along with throwing a confused and questioning gaze, but was not enough to throw the girl off.Instead, Loraine put both hands on her hips, now playfully grinning.“There’s this twinkle in your eyes. Is it because of Lucas Mandel? I heard you two are in the same class. Do I smell something brewing in here?”She nearly squeals, clapping and shaking her shoulders in a playful giggle.“Oh no
Lungs tightening with each breath, skin stinging from every corner, and joints throbbing even while she remained steady, laid down, facing the sky. A whimper escaped Selene because of the mixture of cold numbness and stabbing pain within her body.It was the sounds of murmurs from afar that woke her up. As her instincts were pushing her to move or cry out once more. She opened her mouth, but her throat burned from the inside when she tried to make a sound, causing her to cough, making her insides twist and prickle. She let out a gurgling noise when liquid started coming out of her.Another croak came when she tasted the iron, dirt, and tanginess in her tongue. It left her with no choice but to stop, needing to chase after her breath.“The trail leads here!”A familiar voice echoed through the forest. But the depth of darkness was too thick that everything remained pitch black. Not wanting to give up, Selene gathered every remaining ounce of strength she had, pushing as much air throug
For the first time in years, the small council of Silent Ridge peak has once again has come together, as the recent incident has incited another grave concern for everyone living there. All of them gathered a few meters from where the supposed victim was resting, wanting to see for themselves the severity of the situation they were facing.Included among the older congregation were the young Lucas and Duncan, standing as representatives of their respective packs.“It’s witchcraft. She is the same as her aunt!”A mustached elder hissed, eyes widening after having seen the female’s state. When they arrive there, they expected to see a bloodies corpse, based on the reports given by their scouts. But to their surprise, they face a perfectly healthy and resting girl, half naked because of her torn clothes.“None of you can prove that.”Lucas was keen to dismiss the idea, sending a mocking gaze at the people there. That receive glares from everybody who was present, even the doctors and nur
Even with the stinging scent of ammonia, alcohol, and iron attacking her senses, Selene continued pretending to be asleep. She’d been awake for half an hour, but could not bring it upon herself to open her eyes in fear, hearing the number of individuals around her, along with being naked. From what she caught during the entire conversation, they were fighting over her about something, though she didn’t catch the gist of it all.One thing is for sure, in her mind, there were people who didn’t want her there. She could not understand what she’d done wrong this time, since she had been keeping to herself. The thought of that cause a surge of terror and panic in her. Each breath she took became heavier, faster, and stingy with each inhale. Her eyes, even though remaining closed, heated when tears formed and wish to escape. It was at this moment the calming voice echoed through her thoughts again.‘Be strong, little one.’These words hummed inside her head, like a soothing music which put
Tired and weakened, Selene hardly notice she’d lost consciousness again. The pull of sleep was too much for her to bear, only waking when she noticed the itch in her throat.Somehow recovered, she now had the strength to open her eyes. A frown immediately appeared on her face upon gazing at where she was in.Dust floating everywhere, sticking to the walls, floors, and ceiling. A single small window gave the room light, making the entire place dim.She hugged herself when the coldness prickled her skin, steam coming out of her with each breath. Her hands instinctively brushed the side of her bed, searching for a blanket or something to cover herself, realizing her nakedness.Unable to find anything, she sat up to get a better look around, groaning from the jolt of pain piercing through her joints.“Hello? Is anybody there?”Her voice echoed through the empty room, yet it did not seem to leave the place she was in.She frowned at the wooden door at the far end of it, having a small slid
Duncan Vondeer’s face wrinkled from the deepness of his frown. His eyes, half open, not wanting to fully see the person walking around in front of him.He and a few others gathered in the study, discussing the reason for his current decision. He wasn’t supposed to be there, if it not for George, his father’s beta and second in command forcing him.It left him with no choice but to groan and grumble at his dissatisfaction and annoyance. His ears were ringing from the squeaky high-pitched voice, bantering nonstop for half an hour already.“A debt? That’s the best you can come up with?”Valentine Sage’s face looked like it was about to explode. Its color had turned beet red from all the huffing and puffing she’d been doing.Unable to endure the continues nagging. Duncan finally let out a growl, hand wiping his face to keep what little patience he had.“Can we not talk about this?”His voice was firm, gritting his teeth after slamming his fist on the chair’s arm, almost breaking the thin
After years of being passed around, disregarded, and shunned. For the first time, Selene could genuinely smile with glee. The sensation of being needed and relied upon brought about an insurmountable energy and reason for her. Especially since it was her aunt Penelope who was in need. It was now her chance to return the favor for the new life she had given her.She does a quick turn in front of the mirror, making sure she’d properly put on the uniform provided to her by an attendant there. It was a black and white maid outfit, complete with an apron and the headdress.Though shorter than the supposed design, since she’s certain it should reach up to his ankle, not her knee. Even if it wasn’t the style, she thought, she remained giddy, wearing such frilly kind of clothing. The way it flaps in the air when she moves and its softness on her skin was something she’d never experienced before.Footsteps coming from the stairs caused her to straighten, immediately turning to face the entrywa
Duncan couldn’t remove the grin on his face, having achieved something none had ever tried before. It was a long shot, but somehow, the discovery elated him.He looks out the window from his father’s study, closely watching Selene watering the flowers on the other side of the maze garden. The girl was alone, yet she had this smile on, all the while vigilantly doing her task of tending the plants there.“You actually did it!”It was Ben, his beta, jumping in cheer after hearing what he had done.He gathered his two most trusted aid to tell them about the situation, since they remained wary of their ward. The woman wasn’t just another hapless victim; she was the niece of Penelope Hallow. The so-called moonlight wench. Also, her sudden recovery after getting attack puzzled many of them. As he too was certain she had died when they brought her to the infirmary.“Was that necessary, young alpha?”Julieta bit her lip, hands clasp together in worry. She was aware they were dealing with someo
Duncan was huffing with each bone crackling, muscle spasming, and skin ripping. He kept his gaze glued to his father, not daring to look away. This was a crucial moment, so he did not notice the change in himself, being too occupied by the thoughts of how he was going to take his father down. But the others who’d witness it first had been well aware of of the problem, seeing the change in him.“What’s wrong with the alpha? He looks smaller than last time.”Ben frowned, swallowing hard when the two alphas finished their shifting. It was clear that there was something wrong with their young-alpha.“I told him about this.”Julieta couldn’t keep herself from nibbling her nails from the tension. She knew this would happen, but no matter how much she explained it, their young-alpha remained steadfast in his decision. Now, they got left with a predicament that could impact not just their future, but also their pack.“About what?”Ben turned to the head-maid with shaky feet, unable to keep hi
The fated day arrives, and at alpha Jame’s behest, all the leaders of the pack were there to witness the duel between father and son.The event was a big deal, since it was a fight to decide who gets to be the head of the Shadow bane pack, which is one of the three biggest packs in their town.Alpha James couldn’t hide his smirk, confident of his upcoming victory. It hadn’t been that long since he’d spar with his son, and from that information alone brought about his confidence.Other figures who were present there were some of the townsfolk whom were curious about the outcome.“What came over Duncan to challenge his father to a duel? He’s going to take over the pack in a few years, so why bother with this?”Valentine heaved a sigh, pressing a hand on her temple while she frown at the two alphas standing side by side in front of the elders.“Maybe he finally gained the balls for it.”Lucas snorts, resisting the urge to laugh. But then a thought crossed his mind, causing him to rethink
After finishing cleaning the attic, Selene took the chance to take a few minutes of rest, since she’d done all the chores given to him by the head-maid.Because of the recent conflict, there were now only three of them there taking care of the house. The head-maid, Ben, and her. She didn’t think that most of the maids working there were under Duncan’s father. She took a deep sigh, looking out into the circular window into the horizon, remembering the incident. Part of her felt sad for the young-alpha, but another side of was envying him.Selene was still staring outside, mop in her hand, while deep in thought when Duncan came in. This got the young-alpha’s face twisting in irritation.“Do you always need to intrude on my personal space?”Duncan roared, letting his rage take over. The walls shook as his voice echoed through the entire room.Caught by surprised, Selene jump in panic, causing her to tumble. Her mop hit the bucket on her feet, spilling the murky water in it, making her sl
Duncan’s rage continued to rage growing inside of him, unable to calm his nerves from the scene a moment ago. Though he now sat on the table, being served by Selene, his face remained straight, eyes sharp, while staring upfront.“Everything good with you, alpha?”Ben’s face twitch with worry, an inexplainable fear creeping into him because of the young-alpha’s murderous expression.‘Was it because of the upcoming fight? Or perhaps it was because they didn’t call him to eat?’ These were the thoughts playing in Ben’s mind. Unable to understand the cause of his alpha’s mood.“Yeah, just swell.”Duncan snorts; it was clear his words was lace with sarcasm. In truth, he had this uncontrollable itch to snap Ben’s neck. He wanted to rip him apart, piece b
Selene sat on the bed, her thoughts lingering on her head on things. With how things were going with her life, she didn’t know where to turn to or what to do next. Her aunt was missing; their house had those odd shadow figures lingering in them, and she was miles away from civilization. She felt so helpless, not knowing how long she’ll be allowed to stay in the pack this time. Her uncertainty stemmed from the fact that everyone there seems to have a problem with her, along with how Duncan reacted to her a while ago.The young-man’s demeanor confused her, shifting from good to bad in a second without a notice. It made her think if her situation would be the same if she went with Lucas instead. She stops pondering when she hears footsteps from the stairs; she rushed to greet whoever was going down to the cellar.“Hey Ben.”She waves the moment she saw the guy. He was wobbling, careful not to fall from the ladder as his legs were unbalanced.“Oh, Selene. I thought you were with the alpha
James Vondeers grumbled in his chair, his expression darkening with each passing moment. His gaze kept shifting from the clock then to the empty seat beside him.The alpha’s silence created this heavy tension in the room, as the others who were seated at the long table barely made any noise, avoiding even the slightest clink of their utensil.“I hope everything is to your liking, James?”Connor Sage, alpha of the Blue snow pack, was the one who gained the courage to break the silence through the room. He gave a sympathetic smile at the other alpha on the other side of the table, as it had been an hour, but he remained alone, barely touching the food they’d prepared.Duncan was nowhere to be found; even his beta, George, was absent on that occasion, though the alpha promised they’d arrive momentarily. This brought murmurs among the others gathered there, as they tried to make conversations to remove the awkwardness.“Alpha James, are you certain Duncan will be joining us today?”Valent
Beta George struggled with each step he made, yet he persevered, continuing to move in painful strides. He needed to inform his alpha about this recent discovery, knowing full well it will affect the future of their pack.He was panting from the wound the young-alpha gave him, his blood gushing out, leaving a trail because it would not heal.A rustling from the nearby bushes made him stop; the waft of a familiar scent forced him to change his stance, crouching in preparation for a fight.“Come out, I know you’re there!”George shouts, gritting his teeth. It’s been years since someone manage to get past his detection.Though wounded, his senses remained as before, which meant the person who followed him was no doubt skilled. And from that, he already knew who it was, since there were only a few who’d managed to elude him. From the shadows, a tall, slender figure emerge, walking in such a graceful fashion and fluidity, it was like the person was gliding through the air.“You seem to be
Thankfully, Julieta and Ben were there to assist Duncan, as midway up the stairs, he lost any remaining strength he had, almost collapsing when his legs gave in.The two carefully help the young-alpha into his bed, while Selene followed in silence, afraid she might get in the way.“You sure you’re okay, alpha?”Ben asked after they’d put him in bed, seeing as Duncan’s breathing was slow and he could barely keep his eyes open.“We can still call your mother’s doctor. He hasn’t left town yet.”Julieta was tucking him in, patting his forehead to make sure nothing was wrong with him, as this wasn’t considered normal for them.“I’m fine! I just need to rest.”Duncan grumbled, turning to his side to make himself comfortable. Though he was weakened, it was actually from a sense of tiredness, nothing more.Though he didn’t want to admit it, avoiding to sound pathetic in front of them. Also, he wanted to understand why he ended up like that in the first place.Julieta and Ben looked at each ot
Selene, Julieta, and Ben hurried towards the door to open it when they saw Duncan walking for the entrance. They didn’t wait for him to knock, as Julieta unlocked the door the minute she got there.“Alpha!”Ben and the head-maid screamed in unison when Duncan stepped inside. Selene wanted to come closer, but ended up stopping in her tracks the moment she saw he had no clothes.“You’re bleeding!”She muttered unconsciously, before averting her gaze.Crimson liquid covered the young-alpha’s entire body. Some had dried up, but most of it remained glistening from being fresh.“The blood’s not mine.”Duncan huffed, heaving a sigh as he wiped some from his face.“Are you all right, alpha?”Ben frowned, swallowing hard when his gaze shifted outside. Most of the werewolves there were still unconscious, while some who withstood the young-alpha’s attack were now patching themselves up to the best they can because regenerating was impossible, since the wounds they received came from an alpha.“N
