With a deep breath, Selene takes her first step out of the bus, ready for another challenge.
A ray of sunshine flash before her, forcing her to race a hand to her face, as the beam from the setting sun prickled her skin.
Her heart raced upon glimpsing at the scenery of reddish skies kissing the mountains. Along with the lush forest all around.
Unlike her hometown, filled with buildings, bustling cars, and people. The place was teeming with trees and other plants. Few vehicles drove by the long road, and the highest structures were a three story clock tower, resembling those of olden times.
After having her fill of the view, she reaches for her pocket, fishing out the piece of paper she received from the mail, reading the notes and drawn map on it.
She swallowed hard, wandering her gaze to search for the landmark which was shown there. Nervous that she might be in the wrong place.
A strong wind blew by when the bus left, causing her to let out a loud squeal when the gust lifted her dress up, nearly flashing herself.
Luckily, she was keen to hold on to her clothes before it could go any further. But still it was too late, as part of her legs had already come into plain view, seen by some onlookers standing there because of the ruckus she made.
Selene felt her blood rise to her cheeks, noticing several young men about her age looking her way.
The group gathered in front of the store, just beside the bus stop, so they were the first to see her get down from there.
They ended up grinning from getting a peek at those white long legs, all except one.
Selene’s surroundings suddenly slowed down as her eyes got glued to that single person. As there was this odd sensation of being drawn to the way the guy looked at her.
Among the crowd the individual stood high and mighty, but what caught her sights was the sharp gaze he had sent her, before shifting back to staring into the wood.
It didn’t help that the man’s shirt was unbuttoned, revealing a well-chiseled body, with a tightened chest from having his arms crossed. His denim pants hang low, displaying his abdominal muscles and v-cut sides for all to see.
Selene only ended up evading her gaze when the other men began whistling, throwing winks and flying kisses on her way.
Immediately grabbing on to her suite case, she does a quick pivot, taking the other path in order to avoid the group. Cautiously pulling down her sun hat to hide her face.
Yet, she can’t help checking her peripheral view, wishing to get another glimpse of that guy. But ended up disappointed when the fellow laid down on the bench as if readying to take a nap, hiding himself from her gaze.
She took that as a sign to hasten her steps, scampering to run out of there as the other men continued hollering at her.
It was quite some time before she slowed down, having finally lost sight of them after dashing in one go. She moved so fast; she had not noticed where she was until she rested to get a better view of her surroundings and where she was.
Selene was gasping, sweaty, and shaking from the long sprint before she took another look at her map.
She’d been so pumped up and in such deep thought, she hardly realized she was already standing in front of the house, only becoming aware upon seeing the white picket fences covered in tall grass and flower beds.
All her worries from a while ago instantly disappeared, replaced by a sudden thrust of emotions.
She smiles, even with that pang inside her chest, upon glimpsing at the name written on the wooden mailbox.
‘Hallow.’
A tear escape her eyes, yet she was quick to wipe it off. Not wanting to reminisce on that right now.
After steeling herself and gathering her courage, she pushes the small fence. It let out a soft squeak while being opened, as if it was calling her there.
Her chest throb, panting with each step as she made her way for the stairs. She pauses, needing to compose herself, pulling her dress to remove the crumples and dirt. Once done, she lifted her hand for a knock.
With closed eyes, she repeated her greeting over her head before letting her hands fall on the door. But before it could hit, the thing opens, causing her fist to land straight into a sturdy piece of well-built muscles.
Selene gasped, gaping at the sight of a young man towering over her, his face hiding beneath the shadow of his hoody. Yet she still notices the man’s sharp gaze, along with his gritting teeth that showed out two noticeable fangs from his smirk.
Taken aback, she ended up pausing for a moment as thoughts bombarded her.
‘Was she in the wrong house? Did she make a mistake? Was she sent to another place again just so they could dispose of her?’ These ran through her head as she tried recollecting the picture which she received.
Her pondering got cut short when she hears the man clearing his throat. This immediately garnered her attention, hearing that low, reverberating sound coming from him.
“Can I help you?”
The guy frowned, displaying an awkward smile upon gazing at Selene from head to toe.
The man’s voice was calm, yet strong and full of energy, waking her from the sudden daze. She was quick to close her mouth, shaking her head in order to shrug off all the stuff plaguing her.
After a few seconds of composing herself, she finally gathered her thoughts. Immediately putting on a smile as she gave a nod.
“Yes, I’m sorry. I thought this was my aunt’s house. Penelope Hallow?”
She says, pointing at the mail box upfront.
It took all her control to make sure she didn’t stutter, not wanting to look stupid in front of the guy. All because there was this lump forming in her throat.
She could not stop herself from fiddling with her bag’s strap afterwards, needing to keep her mind occupied. It was the only thing she can do of as the brewing emotions within her would not halt.
She can’t help but think that she got sent some place else to get rid of her.
It was only when Selene noticed how the guy’s face lit up, causing her to pause her judgements.
Upon hearing the name, the man gave out a smile, his tense shoulder relaxing, brandishing a much more welcoming and jolly radiance.
“You must be Selene.”
He says out loud, fingers pointing at her as he let out a chuckle.
That somehow put Selene at ease, as the uncontrolled punching in her gut and drumming in her chest subsided at the mention of her name.
“Oh, so I am in the right place?”
She breathe a sigh of relief, as the idea of being led astray vanished, making things much lighter.
Though this got replaced by another posing question. Who was the fellow and what was he doing there in her aunt’s house?
From what she remembers from the letters, her aunt lived alone. Thus the reason she got invited to stay there, so that she can give the woman company.
“Yes, why don’t you come in?”
The young man moved to the side, opening the door wider. His hand motioning her in.
“Thank you.”
Selene quickly lowered her head, immediately walking into the house while pondering.
The pull of sleep was getting to her, so her mind was now fuzzy, along with her entirety giving away, having travelled for a whole day.
Inside, the smell of roses, old wood, and tea greeted her, making it harder to fight off the heaviness of her eyelids.
If it wasn’t for the man there, she would have sunk in on the sofa, surrendering to her tired body. But alas, she needed to remain poise in front of him, along with meeting her estranged relative who’m she only recently found.
“She hasn’t stopped talking about you since yesterday.”
The guy says before moving ahead to guide her in.
That caused the two of them laughing while making their way inside. It only heightened Selene’s curiosity about the guy’s connection to her aunt. Besides, having other ideas because of her cautious side.
Her interest disappeared when she got a good view of the place. The house was a one floor dwelling, but was spacey.
Furnitures were everywhere, yet everything remained tidy. Old pictures hanged on the wall, some were in black and white, other colored. All well preserved within their frames.
There was nothing out of the ordinary, nor were there any signs of danger around. As she felt oddly calm with the person in front.
She stops at an enormous partition, pasted with small little photographs set into a tree. She was keen to notice a familiar grin on one of them, but its branches did not spread out, unlike the others.
“Sorry, are you related to my aunt?”
She asks, pointing to the mural.
Though she did not get a good look at him. The way the person’s face was shrouded there, showing only his mouth, gave her that idea.
This piqued her curiosity again, as the manner the individual grinned looked exactly like the picture on the wall. Also, this is the only explanation she can come up with that would make sense.
“That is a big nope. I’m just here since to fix some stuff. It’s better if you ask Pen about it, though I wouldn’t get my hopes up.”
The fellow was keen to dismiss that, scratching the back of his nape as he let out a forced chuckle.
“Oh, sorry about that.”
She bobbed her head, embarrassed for thinking that. But hearing about the reason somehow shed some light on her questions, blurry as they were.
“The name’s Lucas, by the way.”
The guy finally introduced himself, giving out his hand. She was quick to take it, nodding as they shake.
Warm, gentle, and kind, these were the first thing which came into her mind the minute they touched. Instantly removing her notion of doubt.
“Selene. It’s nice to meet you.”
Was all she can say when she got her wits about. Not wanting to make things awkward again.
If the guy was indeed some far away relative of the sort, that would explain enough why he’d be there.
Also, her sense was not throwing any warnings, instead it was giving out this odd impression of safety while being with the man.
Lucas gave out a chuckle as they let go, immediately turning around and going back to guiding her into the place.
Though it looked small outside, the inside was quite vast, needing to move from a few halls before getting to a room with large wooden double doors.
“Pen, she’s here.”
Lucas calls out after knocking, he pushes the thing open, causing a loud creaking sound to echo through the corridors.
Selene’s heart seemed to have stopped as a sudden rush of anticipation, anxiety, and fear took over her.
She’d never met the woman before. And even during the first time she heard of her, she couldn’t believe someone would take her in after what had happened.
Her eyes grew wide, glimpsing at the red-haired maiden sitting on a large wing chair in front of the fireplace, reading an enormous book.
Aunt Penelope Hallow was not what she expected to be, thinking she was an old lady in her forties.
The woman’s figure remained in shape, hour glass in her loose yellow dress, her round bosom emphasized because of how the clothing hugged her body. Her eyes were like that of a fox, sharp, sensual, and alluring, yet there was this subtleness when she turned to look at them.
A beautiful set of pearly whites greeted them upon her smile, which gave her heart shape face a sort of enchanting glow.
She was quite the opposite of the image Selene had in mind. Instead of a sweet old woman with sagging skin, wrinkles, and white hair, she was facing a person who can be mistaken as someone within her age.
“Finally, come here, you. Let your aunty have a good look at you.”
Aunt Penelope signals her to move closer, as she puts down the book on the side table before standing up with open arms.
Selene took in a deep breath, seeing the welcoming act. There was this dread inside her from the fear of uncertainty, but there was also this joy jumping all over her.
She needed a suitable moment of deliberating with herself before finally having the courage to move.
With her first step, her subconscious began whispering, sending unwanted thoughts of the past, causing her to pant. The thrust of anxiety from old memories creeping into her.
She prayed that somehow, someway, nothing bad would happen.
Her footsteps were heavy, small, and shaky, still adamant if she should approach.
It was only when aunt Penelope moved forward that she got taken aback, suddenly being pulled and then grabbed into a tight and encasing hug.
“Welcome home.”
She whispered in such a gentle manner. It felt like her words were brushing.
Selene ended up grabbing hold too, when the sudden rush of emotions began thrashing about inside of her.
Yet that got kicked aside when a surge of electricity suddenly crawled into parts of her, sending an odd chill and tingling within her.
Images flashed before her: a moon, several beasts looking her way, and then there were large beastly shadows fighting one another. Then the worst, as blood splashed before her sights.
She flinched from the scene, unable to control herself because of its sudden appearance. It was like the entire scenario happened in front of her.
Once her senses returned, she was huffing uncontrollably, eyes widening from the clear memory of it all.
She got dumbfounded that she barely noticed that her aunt was already looking at her. She had this glint in her gaze, together with a meaningful smile.
She wanders her sights to check the room, but the youth who came with her stayed outside, talking to someone on the phone that he didn’t take notice of them.
“What was that?”
She asks, swallowing hard upon returning her gaze to the elder.
Though she was aware of those uncontrolled visions, this was the first time she experienced something so vivid. To the point she can still recall every single image which was shown to her.
She became confused, panicked, most of all afraid, having said her mind out loud.
But instead of fear, all she received was a soft chortle, along with a playful pat on the cheeks.
“I see you also have the gift.”
Aunt Penelope giggles.
Only then that Selene’s gaze focused on the person, as the woman’s eyes seemed to stare straight into her soul.
“You know of it?”
Again, she nearly gaped, unable to believe someone else was aware of her problem. But what truly got her is the fact she did not receive curses and glares from it.
For the longest time, she received the warmth of acceptance from another person besides her parents.
She ended up in tears, no longer able to hold on to the turmoil of emotions in her.
“Come now. I know it had been tough for you, but everything will be okay.”
Aunt Penelope pulled her into her arms, encasing her in a tight hug.
Selene continued to sob as her chest was going to burst, having nearly forgotten what it was like to be held that way.
All she could do was grab hold of the lady. Afraid that somehow she’ll disappear, thinking that all of that was but a dream. As she did not consider, she’d experience such a thing again.
After being thrown out and sent from one family to the other, she lost hope she can ever find anywhere to fit in. With her ability to sense if people didn’t like her at the first meeting, it became easy to understand when she needed to leave. Yet here with her aunt, there was no such warning. It’s such a new feeling that it scared her at the same time.
After preparing breakfast, cleaning the house, and doing the laundry, Selene readied herself to start her day. Not wanting to experience another mishap like yesterday. This time she wore a plain white shirt, jeans, and sneakers. Yet because they were old clothes, all of them were hugging tightly, even with her thin figure. All seemed well, until she checked herself in the mirror and saw how her belly was sticking out, because of how her breast were pushing parts of it. Not having anything else to wear, since all her other stuff had become faded, ripped, or too small for her, she got left with no other choice but to make do with it. She mitigated her situation by putting on a jacket, all so she can cover herself. But because of the dry temperature, she ended up only wrapping the thing around her waist. Satisfied with her outfit on her second look, she finally steps out of the room where she was staying. This was the first time she’d slept in a soft bed in years since her parents
Those pitch black eyes continued to linger in her thoughts, as if it was right in front of her. There was something about the way the young man looked at her that sent unfamiliar shivers throughout her entirety. No matter how many times she tries to make sense of it all. She could not figure why she could not remove it from her mind. Also, her consciousness did not wander off some place during the entire time. As if the guy had completely pulled everything around her. She only returned to reality, catching the muffling sound of a sweet voice, together with a shadow waving at her peripheral vision. Selene flinches, shaking her head to wake herself from the daze. Followed by an immediate gulp, because of the sudden dryness in her throat. “You all right, dear?” It was aunt Penelope, staring at her with a frown. Worry etched on her face, realizing she’d been dozing their entire conversation. “Yes, aunty.” Selene was quick to put on her smile, hurrying to finish the food in her pl
Thankfully, everything went well that day with no issues, though there were more patrons than before. So their shift ended up getting later than before. After saying their farewells to the owners, she and her new friend Loraine make their way home. Clouds shrouded the sky, covering the moon’s shine and shrouding the entire street in darkness. Even with the streetlamps, their glow focused on the road and nowhere else. If it wasn’t for the lively companion Selene had right now, she’d have a hard time walking alone because of how eery it became. “I can’t believe you know Lucas Mandel?” Loraine squealed in delight, uncontrollably jumping while clapping her hands non-stop. The girl looked like a child that had too much candy, continuously prancing around without a sign of tiredness. “I’m not sure of his surname, but I only met him a few times.” Thinking back on the people she had a conversation with that day, there was only one person with that name. Also, seeing how the woman was o
Blood splashed her vision, causing her to wail from the taste of salt and iron on her mouth, along with the cold and wetness scattering through her face. Followed by the image of a giant beast lunging towards her.It was only when brawny arms wrapped around her body, alongside a deep yet subtle cooing, did her nerves calmed. She did not fall on the ground, instead laid comfortably on firm muscles. She was having one of those visions again. And this time, the scene was so real; she became unable to distinguish it from reality. Until she had this warmness covering her, mixed with that relaxing aroma of cedar wood. She took a few more moments to fully regain her composure, understanding that she was safe in the arms of someone strong and protective. But the minute she got a glimpse of the person holding her, everything turned topsy-turvy when, once again, her visions became a blur.An odd glow radiated from the guy when her sights gaze upon those alluring sets of eyes staring straight at
Renewed with a kind of vigor for his start at life. Selene was all smiles as she walked into the halls of the school. She’d greet almost every person she come across, giving a pleasant nod, hoping for the same reply or at least a hello. But all she received were frowns and condescending gazes, with some clicking on their tongues and wincing upon catching sight of her.It didn’t take long before her energy and liveliness finally faded, realizing she was doing something wrong, especially seeing how everyone avoided her the moment she stepped into the classroom, as if she carried the plague.Because of this, she chose to sit at the far end of the room, same as what she usually did in her previous schools. It seems no matter where she goes, her place will always be at the bottom. It wasn’t that hard to see, considering she wore her normal white T-shirt, tight jeans, and worn out sneakers. Compared to the students there who donned fashionable clothing, with some being well-known brands, he
Selene pondered on the advice left to her by Duncan. The idea of avoiding her newly found friends caused her insides to twist and her stomach twitch.Rejection and avoidance were no stranger to her, and she cannot put it upon herself to do the same to others. Aware of the pain and sadness it brings.“You all right?”Loraine’s voice sounded like a hum. But it was enough to wake her from the sudden trance, making her move her hand in a circular motion, as she had been wiping the counter before all of that happened.“Yeah, just a bit worn out?”She was quick to answer, seeing how the girl raised a brow, along with throwing a confused and questioning gaze, but was not enough to throw the girl off.Instead, Loraine put both hands on her hips, now playfully grinning.“There’s this twinkle in your eyes. Is it because of Lucas Mandel? I heard you two are in the same class. Do I smell something brewing in here?”She nearly squeals, clapping and shaking her shoulders in a playful giggle.“Oh no
Lungs tightening with each breath, skin stinging from every corner, and joints throbbing even while she remained steady, laid down, facing the sky. A whimper escaped Selene because of the mixture of cold numbness and stabbing pain within her body.It was the sounds of murmurs from afar that woke her up. As her instincts were pushing her to move or cry out once more. She opened her mouth, but her throat burned from the inside when she tried to make a sound, causing her to cough, making her insides twist and prickle. She let out a gurgling noise when liquid started coming out of her.Another croak came when she tasted the iron, dirt, and tanginess in her tongue. It left her with no choice but to stop, needing to chase after her breath.“The trail leads here!”A familiar voice echoed through the forest. But the depth of darkness was too thick that everything remained pitch black. Not wanting to give up, Selene gathered every remaining ounce of strength she had, pushing as much air throug
For the first time in years, the small council of Silent Ridge peak has once again has come together, as the recent incident has incited another grave concern for everyone living there. All of them gathered a few meters from where the supposed victim was resting, wanting to see for themselves the severity of the situation they were facing.Included among the older congregation were the young Lucas and Duncan, standing as representatives of their respective packs.“It’s witchcraft. She is the same as her aunt!”A mustached elder hissed, eyes widening after having seen the female’s state. When they arrive there, they expected to see a bloodies corpse, based on the reports given by their scouts. But to their surprise, they face a perfectly healthy and resting girl, half naked because of her torn clothes.“None of you can prove that.”Lucas was keen to dismiss the idea, sending a mocking gaze at the people there. That receive glares from everybody who was present, even the doctors and nur
Duncan sat on the bed with a wrinkled face, groaning in annoyance because of the sunlight coming from the gap between the curtains that woke him up.He’d lost track of time, being so drowned in that carnality that he shared with Selene, he didn’t think he could experience such satisfaction in his life. Even his first could not compare to what he had.The memory of last night brought a grin to his face, recollecting the number of times he ravage her. Just thinking about it made him hard again, but then he remembered how many times Selene fainted during the entire course of their intimacy. It seems the woman still couldn’t handle him, since she was only a changeling. But then, the ide
Selene was so dazed and restless, drag down into the pit of carnal cravings because of all those memories. She became drunk with passion, nerve, and need, clouding her mind with unsavory thoughts. She swallowed hard, trying to calm herself. Yet the man’s powerful scent was making it so difficult, hypnotized by that mesmerizing mix of chocolate and wood.In just seconds, she was gasping for air, feeling her throat drying from the unknown thirst brought about by the increase in her body’s temperature. Some of her senses have also become heightened. As her skin tingled from the warmth they shared, even though they were still meters apart, his heartbeat and breathing sounded like drums to her
Duncan sprawled on the ground, heaving and groaning. His enormous frame barely moving from its place, with a hand clasping to the grass to pull himself closer to the picket fence.Selene felt her blood rush out of her face, along with unease and fear. She rushed towards the guy without a second thought, hurriedly opening the gate to get to him.“Oh my gosh, what happened to you?”
Selene hadn’t the time to comprehend what was happening. All she could do was follow instructions, packing a suitcase, and taking down notes and reminders.Only when they were at the bus station, she finally found the courage to speak out what was on her mind.“Why can’t I come with you, aunt Pen?”She swallowed hard, having that tightening in her chest.Memories of similar incidents in the past flooded her thoughts, bringing about panic and fear inside of her.Penelope, being in a hurry, hardly notice the terror in Selene’s expression. She gave out a weak smile before brushing her niece’s cheek.“You’ll be safer here.”Her tone was low and gentle, almost like a lullaby.Yet this only brought forth several faint flashes in Selene, with the exact words echoing through her head. Her eyes felt hot, her breathing erratic as the surge of emotions swelled inside her from once again being left.“But why do you have to leave?”Her voice trembled, her hands turning cold, as the thought of bein
The stillness of the house and the silence that came with it only made Duncan’s mind go into a frenzy. His body aching, itching, and twitching from the turmoil within him. A part of him still resisted, thanks to the last words of his beta Ben, but this was not enough to stop the unrest inside of him.His hands, inkling to touch, his lips, craving for affection, his skin, needing warmth from another, and his manhood ached to be caressed, licked, and dipped into a female’s slippery crevice. His head was basically floating at the time. As he walked down the stairs, memories of those carnal feelings rushed through him.Duncan was panting from all the images flashing through his mind, along with echoes of familiar moans, whimpers, and screams of ecstasy. He was losing balance from the feverish heat consuming him, his vision blurred, and his face covered with streams of sweat. And all of this w
Though they were already at the mansion, Duncan’s rage would not subside. The itching of his teeth and claw remained, needing to dig into flesh, particularly Lucas’.If it wasn’t for Ben, he would have gone full on feral on the other alpha, having that raging need to kill. It was only when his beta intervened and received the brunt of his anger did he finally returned to his senses.“Sorry about that, Ben.”He murmured, his eyes traversing the large gash stemming from his beta’s right shoulder, going all the way down to his left hip. The slash was deep, fresh, and bleeding, unable to heal because he was the one who made it. Even underneath the bandage covering it, the trail and size of the wound were visible.“It’s alright alpha. The doctor said I should be okay in a week or so.”Ben wince with each word, yet he still forced a smile.“I don’t know what came over me. I… I just lost control.”Duncan palmed his face, wiping the sweat that covered it. He couldn’t understand why he went all
Weeks have passed since the incident, yet the memory of the clash between Duncan and Lucas’ group. The sight of blood, gash, and claws swiping sent chills up Selene’s spine. It reminded her of a premonition she had long ago.“You still shaken up after what happened?”Lucas gave her a gentle nudge, noticing how she was spacing out while trembling in that warm breeze. They were currently walking through the woods, with Lucas and Selene being in front, while the others stayed a few feet away from them.Selene forced a smile, trying to hide her concern.“I didn’t think Duncan would do that.”She swallowed hard, remembering the blood thirst in the young man’s eyes. Throughout her stay with them, she’d seen him angry, but never like that, which made her wonder what could have been the cause of it.Though there was certainly fear in her, it kept getting overpowered by a lingering sense of worry and longing. She couldn’t understand why’d she feel that way, especially since she knew they didn’
“Alpha, can we take a rest? We’ve been running around the entire town for days now.”Ben grumbled. His phasing slowed, no longer having the energy or strength to keep up with Duncan. The young beta was a few meters behind, but didn’t bother to speed up, as he was losing air, nearly reaching his limit.“Don’t ask, just keep going.”Dunca says, increasing his strides as they continued on. He was scared he’d get consumed by the turmoil inside of him the moment he stops.“I don’t understand how we’re going to find the culprit by doing this?”Ben, no longer wanting to continue, was now thinking of ways to escape.“Just stop whining and keep up.”Duncan grumbled. It’s true they weren’t going to catch anyone with what they were doing, but he didn’t care. Because his real reason for aimlessly moving is because he wanted to remove the heat, adrenaline, and tension he had inside. He thought he’d be okay if he tire himself out, as he had done it before, but this was not the case now, as each tim
There was this odd sense in Selene’s chest all throughout the day, making her nervous. Though she couldn’t grasp what it was exactly that was causing it.Deep in thought, while walking through their school’s corridor, she hardly took notice of the shouts behind her, until she felt a strong arm holding on to her shoulders. That brought her back to her senses, immediately making her eyes widened from the unsuspecting touch.“Lucas.”She blurted out, surprised to see the fellow with his group following close.“Hey, Selene, is everything okay with you?”Lucas’s brows furrowed, though he had a smile on his face. Worry can be seen etched all over it.Selene avoided his gaze, tucking a piece of hair to her ear while she bit her lip from embarrassment. It’s been so long since the last time she’d space out, she found it awkward.“Yes, I just feel weird somehow.”She swallowed hard, still having that odd dread crawling into her. This made Luca’s expression straighten, as he grabbed hold of Sele
