Chapter 105

Author: Summer Blossom
Edward abruptly smashed his phone in a fit of rage. He slammed a fist down on the wooden desk, making the folders on it shift.

He had thought that Macie was using the threat of divorce to force him to beg her to come back. But now, another man was hanging around her. She had even claimed the divorce papers were valid—that he had signed them.

He figured she was still angry with him, which was why she had made it sound so convincing, even bringing another man in to provoke him.

Edward's face darkened, seething with fury. He gritted his teeth and tried to contact the police officer again, ready to track Macie's exact location and show up in person.

Unfortunately, as soon as the call connected, he was informed that the case had been closed. Edward froze and demanded, "Who permitted you to close it? I haven't found her yet!"

"Your family did. If you try reporting her missing again, it'll be treated as filing a false report," said the officer.

With that, the call ended. Edward stood br

At Julian's words, Macie had no choice but to get up and pack her things. If she stayed any longer, Julian would definitely think Palmer was giving her trouble.Julian handed her the elevator access card. She thanked him and said, "You didn't have to come find me in person. You could've just had your assistant pass it to me."He looked at her. He couldn't have used it as an excuse to walk her out if he hadn't brought it himself."We're on the same floor, and it was just nearby. That's why I didn't bother my assistant," he explained. In the elevator, Macie's phone rang again. She pulled it out and saw another unfamiliar number on her phone screen. Without hesitation, she added it to the block list. However, another strange number appeared before she could put the phone back in her bag.Her grip on the phone tightened. She blocked the new number and set her phone to silent mode."Is that another telemarketer?" Julian asked. He had been watching her from the corner of his eye.Ma

Edward couldn't wrap his head around the possibility that Macie might have gone to another man. He couldn't believe that she'd do that.He was sure that she liked him. Even if it was all just to make him jealous, hadn't she made her point already? So why wasn't she coming back? How long was she planning to drag this out?Edward's eyes were bloodshot. His fingers were tightly interlocked, causing his knuckles to turn white. When Nathan entered the office, he saw Edward not doing any work. The latter was just staring furiously at the computer screen. Before Nathan could speak, he heard Edward mumbling to himself in doubt."I never signed anything. Where did that document come from?"Nathan, do you think Macie forged my signature? I'd bring files home sometimes. She must've seen it before."Nathan looked at Edward, thinking that the latter was still in denial. It seemed that Edward was trying to erase the document's existence as if he could rewrite reality. Nathan sighed."Mr. Fowl

Nathan firmly said, "Mr. Fowler, it's true I wasn't there when you two met or got to know each other. I didn't witness the seven years you and Macie spent as classmates. But based on my recent observations, Macie really doesn't love you anymore."Edward's face darkened with rage. He was ready to lash out, but before he could speak, Nathan continued, "Didn't you buy Macie a new phone? I delivered it on your behalf. She didn't even want to accept it. She almost threw it straight into the trash."And that meal you had delivered. Do you know why she ate it? It was because I didn't tell her that it came from you. I told her that it was from the Fowler family. Otherwise, she might've poured it straight down the drain."Haven't you been in love before? Maybe with your ex-girlfriend? Don't you get it? The first sign a woman's stopped loving you is when she turns cold and distant. That's exactly what's happening now. Macie doesn't even answer your calls."Edward stood frozen. His eyes were

"Save those words for Macie, if she's still willing to listen," Nathan said, sighing."Then does that mean I still have a chance? I can explain everything to Macie!" Edward excitedly said, his eyes lighting up."There's probably no chance. Didn't you see how decisively Macie left? Her heart was already completely shattered," Nathan said. But then he recalled Macie's words. She had said, "Edward only listens to what he wants to listen". So, Nathan forced a smile and said, "You should at least try. You won't have regrets that way.""I definitely won't let anything happen that I'll regret. As long as I apologize to Macie and explain everything, she'll forgive me for sure," Edward said with renewed determination. He was full of confidence.Nathan looked at him. One moment, he was drowning in gloom; the next, he was full of energy as if someone had injected him with adrenaline. He inwardly wished Edward the best of luck. Clearly, he wouldn't stop until he ran headfirst into a wall.W

Nathan was starting to regret helping Edward realize his feelings. He felt the usual Edward was more real—this version in front of him seemed like a man possessed. He even thought it might be better if Ethan went back to liking Sharon than staying in this mess.Suddenly, the two of them seemed like a better match. After hesitating several times, Nathan still express his true thoughts. He was afraid that Edward would break down completely and spiral into depression."Macie was hurt so deeply by you. Think about it. Do you really think she'll forgive you that easily?" Nathan asked, trying to reason with him.Hearing that, Edward clenched his fists tighter, overcome with guilt and regret. He knew exactly how he had treated Macie, especially over the past month. He had pushed her so hard that she fractured her tailbone. During the gas leak, he had left her behind. Even if it wasn't on purpose, Macie had nearly died.He was guilty beyond redemption. He knew that Macie wouldn't forgiv

Sharon asked, "Do I really disgust you that much? You clearly had strong feelings for me. I don't believe your love for me could disappear overnight. Not after two years.""I told you already," Edward said coldly. "I stopped loving you when we broke up two years ago.""I don't believe that," she shot back. "You weren't like this just a little while ago. You even kissed—"Before she could finish, Edward grabbed her jaw firmly to silence her."That was just me trying to figure out if I still had any feelings for you," he snapped. "But every time I get close to you, I only think about Macie. She's the one I love."Four days ago, he'd said he didn't love Macie. But now, he was admitting it to Sharon's face.Tears streamed down her cheeks, and her fists clenched at her sides. She hated Macie more than anything at that moment."So, you never really loved me, did you?" she cried. "That's the only way you could've moved on so fast." She continued, "Do you even know how much I loved you?

Edward turned his head, clenched his fists, and glared at Sharon. Every word out of her mouth reminded him of just how monstrous he'd been and how deeply he'd hurt Macie. Regret twisted with pain inside him. He wanted nothing more than to slap himself across the face."Ed, I know you still love me. I don't know how you ever convinced yourself you had feelings for Macie, but it's not real."When he didn't speak, she thought her words were starting to sink in. She stepped closer and continued to work him."You just weren't used to her being gone. Anyone would get attached after two years—even if it was just a dog. You simply mistook that familiarity for love."In your heart, the one you truly care about is me. Think about it. Every time I got hurt, who was the one who panicked? Who came running without a second thought?""Shut up!" Edward roared, his face twisted in fury."Do you think I can't tell the difference between loving and not loving someone? I'm not a fool. "Macie never took me from you," Edward said. "It was Grandpa who forced her to marry me."However, Sharon didn't believe him. It wasn't as though she didn't know about Macie's feelings for Edward. She knew that Macie had liked him since high school. But, of course, Sharon would never say that out loud. After all, why would she do Macie any favors? If anything, she was hoping that the two of them would split for good."Ed, you and Macie are already divorced. It's in the past. Why don't we start over?" she persisted.Sharon has a long history with Edward. She had "known" him since high school, and they started dating in college. After all the effort she'd put into their relationship, she wouldn't give up on their relationship that easily."Who wants to start over with you? I'm not even divorced," Edward spat.He gritted his teeth and glared at her. Just hearing the word "divorce" made him tense up. He insisted that he hadn't divorced Macie."How is that possible? "So, what's this about, Mr. Atkins? Are you mad that I overstepped or mad that I ruined your chance to be a hero?" Palmer casually asked as he sat across Julian at the lunch table."That's not it—Macie's just my junior from college. Naturally, I'm going to side with her," Julian replied."Yeah? Did you ever stop to ask Macie what she wants?" Palmer shot back.He smirked, then added, "Mr. Atkins, you're going about chasing a woman all wrong. Some women might fall for that kind of thing—where you quietly fix all their problems, then show up cool and composed, expecting them to be grateful and fall for you."But it's obvious that Macie's not that type. She's ambitious, proud, and humble. She keeps a polite distance. You knew her in college—you should know that better than me."Julian fell silent, watching him.He had to admit that Palmer had a sharp eye for people. In just a few days, he'd sized Macie up perfectly.Palmer continued, "As someone who's been there, trust me—what Macie

Macie pressed her lips together. Most of her coworkers didn't know much about her background, and thanks to the rumors about her and Julian, coupled with the fact that a newcomer like her had been made an interim team lead, the jealousy burned deeper."I understand what you're saying, Mr. Stellan. I'll head over to HR first. I'll clear things up myself during the full department meeting tomorrow," Macie said.Palmer nodded and watched Macie leave. He thought about the rumors he'd heard—that Julian intended for her to take over his position eventually.Given her capabilities, Palmer thought Macie wouldn't have a problem being a team lead. As for the director role, it was obvious that Julian's personal feelings for her played a part.Still, Julian didn't even try to hide his true feelings at work. He openly took Macie out for meals, left the office with her after work, and even gave her an extra access card to the private elevator. How could she not end up being everyone's target?L

After finishing up most of the packing, Edward sat on the edge of the bed, zoning out. His mind drifted back to his high school days.He really did owe Sharon a debt of gratitude. If it hadn't been for her, he might not have pulled himself out of the grief after his mother passed away so abruptly. That was also why he had spent so long convincing and brainwashing himself that he loved and liked her.But once Edward and Sharon started dating, he realized that it wasn't love. It took him years to fully understand that, and by the time he did, he had already hurt Macie and missed his chance. He pressed his lips together as he thought of how Sharon had doubted him.Things had been good at the start. He didn't know exactly when it changed, but somewhere along the way, it did.Back then, it was Sharon who first sent him a friend request. The request included a verification message, an unsolved math puzzle he couldn't crack. So he accepted it, and they started talking. They talked about

Sharon finally understood. She had spent three years as a mere substitute. Edward had never truly loved her. He had loved that stranger he used to chat with in high school—the "online anonymous friend". Not her. That was why he was able to fall for Macie after only two years together. Because from the very beginning, the person he liked had never been Sharon. All her companionship in real life for three years couldn't even compare to the fleeting connection he had felt with a stranger online. The realization twisted something ugly and bitter inside her. Sharon clenched her teeth so hard it hurt, her eyes darkening with hatred.Inside, Edward had already walked through the door, missing the look of venom distorting her face outside. As he moved to close the door, something jammed it."Edward! You said yourself you never understood love properly. So how do you even know you love Macie? You used to hate her!" Sharon cried, pushing against the door. "And me, I dated you! I was your

20 minutes later, Edward arrived at his apartment complex. He dragged himself upstairs in a daze, his eyes unfocused, his whole body radiating defeat. He was so lost in thought that he didn't even notice someone crouching by his door.Out of pure muscle memory, he turned left toward his unit. The sound of his footsteps caught the person's attention. The figure suddenly lifted her head and ran toward him excitedly."Edward!" Sharon cried out as she threw herself at him, her voice already trembling with tears.Only then did Edward snap back to reality. When he realized who was clinging to him, he immediately shoved her away without a trace of mercy. If only the one holding him right now was Macie..."What are you doing here?" he demanded coldly."I came to find you!" Sharon said, tears spilling from her eyes. "Where have you been these past two days? Why didn't you come home?"She tried to get closer again, but Edward caught her wrist and pushed her back.Frowning, he realized th

"Macie never wanted anything from you. You didn't lose a thing. In fact, she spent two years taking care of you—cooking, cleaning, managing everything. And in just the past month alone, she's been hurt multiple times," Nathan said. "Looking at it objectively, it's clear that Macie suffered the most. You didn't lose half your fortune. So why are you still clinging to her so hard?"Edward stared Nathan down, furious. He wanted to snap back, to argue, but he had no ground to stand on. It felt like he was about to explode, but somehow, he swallowed it down.Indeed, Macie had spent two years washing his clothes, cooking his meals, and handling everything. He had never once given her money, not even for groceries. She had paid for it all herself without uttering a single word of complaint. And gifts? Forget it.He had even demanded that she stay invisible. He forbade her from appearing publicly or identifying herself as Edward's wife. He had never given her a title or anything. He fig

Edward had thought that he could stay away from Macie, and he thought he could finally stop hurting her.But whether it was out of love, possessiveness, or just plain male pride, Edward realized that he couldn't do it. He couldn't just hand over the woman he loved to another man.Macie had agreed to marry him back then. He hadn't forced her. Since she had chosen him once, she couldn't just walk away so easily. If she hated him, then so be it. But he wasn't letting the divorce happen."The 30-day cooling-off period. Find a way to void the agreement. This divorce isn't happening," Edward said coolly.Nathan immediately thought of the divorce agreement he had seen at the Fowler residence last week. He hesitated and said, "Usually, there are only two grounds for contesting a divorce—property division or custody disputes."You and Macie have no children. And as for property... she signed that she'd leave with nothing. Based on that, there's no legal ground to—"Nathan abruptly cut him

"You should get some rest, Mr. Fowler. I'll wake you at 2:00 pm," Nathan said."No need. Send me the slides for the afternoon meeting now," Edward replied."The meeting's not until 5:00 pm... There's still time..." Nathan started to say, but when he met Edward's cold gaze, he immediately shut up and obediently sent the files over.Nathan stole a glance at Edward's condition and couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.Especially considering how, all day, Edward hadn't once mentioned anything about Macie. But hadn't he found out which company Macie worked at over the weekend?Given how crazy he'd been last week—calling the cops and hiring hackers to track her address—how could he now seem so indifferent after just two days?Nathan hadn't been there Friday night. He thought that perhaps something had happened tghat he didn't know about. Macie didn't respond to Alice, but inwardly, she thought, "Be brave? I was brave once, but after that, I lost all my courage and was traumatized."Alice noticed Macie spacing out and asked, half-jokingly and somewhat suspiciously, "Damn. What's with that look? You've got that whole 'I've been through some shit' vibe going on. Don't tell me that you fell for someone while you were abroad?" Macie snapped back to reality and smiled. She said, "It's nothing like that. I was just thinking about what you said. You have a point."Alice huffed. "Of course! When you do get yourself a boyfriend, you had better call me in as your love guru! I'm also calling dibs on being your maid of honor!"Macie just smiled, not answering. After all, there hadn't even been a wedding when she married Edward. There was no ceremony or guests. It was almost like their marriage had never happened at all.…The weekend flew by in a blink. It was just like Yosef had said. No matter how deep Edward's heartbreak
