SERAPHINA POV

I wiped the sweat from my brow as I finished my solo training session.

Kaelen had left in a hurry with Rion and Aric. And I knew it was about the investigation.

The entire palace was in a state of heightened anxiety regarding the situation. It is hoped that the investigation yielded valuable insights that can provide a solution.

The news of the incident undoubtedly had spread throughout the city.

The sun was high today, making everywhere so unbearably hot.

My clothes were soaked with sweat, and my bones were aching.

I have been pushing myself hard lately, trying to keep my mind off the chaos surrounding the recent events.

The empty training field echoed with the sounds of my solitary efforts, a stark contrast to the usual noise of a bustling squad.

After the incident with that soldier, they had all given me space to breathe.

If I had known that me almost killing a soldier would have gotten them to leave me be, I would have snapped all too soon.

But I still fe

KAELEN POVI paced the confines of the dimly lit room, my expression one of intense concentration. The room was sparsely furnished, its solemnity befitting the gravity of our discussion. Aric stood by the window, his gaze distant as he contemplated the situation."It is unlike Rion to be so unsettled," I remarked, my tone measured. "He has always exhibited a remarkable steadiness in both his demeanor and his powers. His control has been unwavering, a trait that has long distinguished him." Aric nodded, though his eyes remained clouded with concern. "Indeed. His powers have always fluctuated, but never to this extent. It’s as if the very foundation of his abilities is shifting. This has never happened before." I halted my pacing and turned to face Aric. "He needs help. We need to get help for him." Aric’s jaw tightened. "I agree. But only a witch can help him. Where can we find one? They are scattered all over the state, it won't be easy to find one." The entire ordeal was both s

RION POV "The second body was found in the garden," I began, my tone calm yet carrying the weight of the situation. "The same mark was carved into the flesh. It matches the symbol on the first victim." The council room was the last place I desired to be after the events of today. Alas, one rarely receives what they truly wish for. Following Seraphina's discovery of the body, we commenced our investigation immediately. The same mark was found carved in the same location. The King’s brow furrowed deeply, his eyes dark with concern. "This mark," he said slowly, "is not something we can ignore. It is a deliberate act, meant to send a message—one that speaks of enemies moving too close to the throne.""Indeed, Your Majesty," Councilman Daruis interjected, his hands clasped together as he leaned slightly forward. "It appears our enemies are getting bold. The bodies are placed where they will be found, but there are no signs of how they were brought there or how the killer is able to byp

KAELEN POVI have always maintained a certain distance in my interactions with others, valuing personal space. However, I find this inclination difficult to uphold in Seraphina's presence. Her presence exerts a pull on me, as though an unseen force is compelling me to draw closer.Lately, I catch myself watching her more often, my hands yearning to reach out and touch her.I had originally come here simply to inform her of the curfew and depart, yet I now find myself unable to move from where I stand.I stepped closer. "Seraphina," I began, my voice softening. "It’s not safe for you to be out there alone. The fact that you were the one to find the body is... concerning." Her eyes flicked back to mine, and I saw a flash of something—defiance, perhaps? She had always been strong, never one to back down, but this time I needed her to understand. "You must be careful. We don’t know who—or what—is behind this. And now that you've been directly involved…" "I’m not going to hide away," sh

SERAPHINA POV My bed felt too hot as I tossed and turned. The blanket felt like they were chains wrapped around my body. The walls felt like they were closing in on me. I couldn't sleep, couldn't breathe. Sleep offered no respite, as nightmares relentlessly pursued me from waking reality into the realm of dreams. My restlessness intensified, threatening to drive me to the brink of madness if I remained confined to my chamber. I rose from my bed and hastily donned my trousers and tunic, leaving the shirt unfastened. I had no intention of encountering anyone. The hour was well past eight, and the curfew was in full effect. The consequences of being discovered while traversing the palace grounds clandestinely would be severe. I abandoned my boots and just left my room barefooted. I needed to be as quiet as possible. I moved silently through the moonlit corridors of the palace, my heart racing with a mixture of fear and exhilaration. The curfew had long passed, and the palace w

ARIC POV The room was tense, the air thick with unspoken emotions as Rion spoke, his voice low but commanding. "Your punishment will be limited freedom, Seraphina," Rion finally said, his eyes steady on her. "You’ll be confined to the palace grounds, you won't leave your quarters except it's train or the dining hall, and you won't leave your quarters after dark."There was a beat of silence after the sentence, the kind that made every breath feel like a weight on your chest. My gaze shifted to Seraphina. Her face was calm, but the way she looked at Rion told me everything. Hurt and acceptance. She tried to hide it but failed. That look, it stirred something in me. I shouldn't feel anything about this. And yet, guilt crept in, unwelcome and uncomfortable. This was my doing—if I hadn’t taunted her last night, she wouldn't have confessed. I had planned to just give her a warning and call it off. I wasn't planning to turn her in or tell anyone, but my words last night had made he

SERAPHINA I stood in the training yard, the sun dipping low in the sky, casting long shadows across the ground. Each strike against the training dummy was an attempt to work through my frustration, but the memory of my earlier confrontation with the men loomed large in my mind.I had seen the disappointment in their eyes and I don't know why it bothers me so much, but it does. Aric though… I can't really understand him. As I lunged forward, a sudden pain shot through my leg, causing me to stumble and fall to the ground with a sharp groan. The training yard, once my refuge, now felt like a prison of my own making.I tried to rise but the pain was so sharp I fell back down, a louder groan escaping my mouth. I had outdone myself today. It was well past the hours my training was supposed to be over, but I couldn't bring myself to end it. Now look at me. I clenched my teeth and tried to rise agai

RION POV I sat in my chambers, the weight of my duties pressing heavily on me. Responsibilities loomed—meetings, strategy sessions, decisions that could alter the kingdom's fate. Yet, my thoughts remain fixated on Seraphina. I recalled the moment I had sentenced her for breaking curfew, her defiance igniting a fire within me even as I upheld the law. It had been an agonizing decision, one I wished I could have avoided. But I couldn't. If words got out that Seraphina broke the curfew and wasn't punished it wouldn't bour well for both of us. So I had to what what I had to do. But the look of hurt in her eyes will stay with me for a while, maybe even forever. I wish it was Kaelen or Aric that had sentenced her but that wasn't possible. And Aric… My dear friend is confused, too stubborn to acknowledge what he already knows. Suddenly, a shrill scream pierced the stillness of the palace, jolting

KEALEN POV "There will be no need for us to bring the war to them," I said as I sat. "They have brought the war to us." The room fell silent for a while before the King recovered and spoke. "What news do you bring?" "Your Majesties, esteemed councilmen," I began, my tone firm. "I bring news that renders our debate moot. The enemy’s army is not merely a threat; they are already upon us." Gasps rippled through the assembly, disbelief mingling with fear. Rion’s brow furrowed, concern etching deep lines across his face. "What do you mean?" "There are reports of their encampment just beyond the border, a vast force gathering to strike. I must say their numbers are quite large. We do not have the luxury of time to summon our allies. War has come for us, whether we choose to acknowledge it or not." A hushed silence enveloped the council as my words sank in. Earlier today my scouts had reported the encampment. The nu

SELANARA POV It pains me deeply to watch my oracle go on with her life without me, but oh the joy it fills me with. She was happy, dare I say happier, than she had been when she served me. There was no goddess to burden her life with her problems and needs, her sadness and rage, her love and hate. She was free from that burden in this life, and I wanted it to remain that way. Mortals would do well without the gods mingling in their lives. That was a future I hope to bring about. A future where mortals would have no connections to the gods, where there would be no oracle and envoy. That was what I should have done centuries ago but I was selfish. Now, I had seen that it was the right thing to do. Some gods and goddesses would resist, that was expected, but they would be forced to obey. The immortals liked having a link to the mortal world, a tool to carry out their works, some dirty works included. Why have I not done this sooner? The immortals have polluted the mortal realm eno

Had my dreams been diverted from the past and now to the present? The familiar scent of my room wrapped around me, enveloping me in a warm hug as if telling me welcome.I was back in the palace, but how? How long have I been asleep?I searched my mate bonds for my mates and it seems they were nearby because it responded immediately. Not long after there was a knock on my door and my men entered inside."The sleepy beauty finally awakes," Aric said as he leaned in to kiss my forehead. I smiled up at him. "Hi." He smiled back.Kaelan and Rion took their turn kissing me before they sat, waiting. "How am I in the palace?""Well, we carried you on a horse and rode here," Rion said, with a smirk on his face. NYMERIA POV (Two centuries ago)"You look brighter than the sun in that dress, my pretty," Varrik teases, a small smile on his face.I giggled. "Oh stop being silly, you." The dress I was wearing was the exact opposite of bright. I was dressed in a gown as black as the night. It flowed to my feet and pooled at the ground, a long slit that shows my leg when I move at the left side. My black hair was tied up and swept away from my face, showing my neck."Nah. I would say she looks as serene and captivating as the moon," Lysandor added, his arms crossed as he leaned against the pillar. I shot him a look but my smile was wide."It would seem I'm the only one not in a poetic mood today," Myrran said as he stepped into the room and placed a kiss on my forehead."And bless the gods for that small mercy," I said as I turned to face my mates. They were also dressed beautifully, each in their different, unique colors and styles. There wasn't a special occasion today. It was just one of those

RION POV Selanara was strong, stronger than any goddess recorded in history but Malakar seems to be her match. Malakar turned shadows into spears and they went flying towards Selanara.I wasn't going into a panic mood yet because I knew any harm that came to Seraphina's body would be healed when Selanara left her. But still, panic was at the top of my chest as I watched the shadows tore through the air with unholy speed, the jagged tips aimed straight for Selanara’s chest, her heart—her very soul. She couldn’t move fast enough. No! I screamed in my mind. But Selanara’s power surged one last time. With a defiant scream, she thrust her hands forward, and the temple exploded in a torrent of light. The ground shuddered and cracked, sending stone and dust flying into the air as the cosmic force she unleashed sent the shadow spears flying off course. For a moment, I could only watch in awe as Malakar was consumed by the explosion, his figure disappearing into the swirling void of light.

KAELAN POV I stared, stupefied, as Seraphina, no, Selanara, floated off her feet, so she was staring eye to eye with Malakar. My Seraphina was still in there but the goddess was in full control. I knew this wasn't hurting Seraphina in any way—her goddess loved her the way we did, so she wouldn't bring any harm to her.Malakar tried to keep his expression blank but a flicker of something flashed in the god's face, there and gone the next."And how do you intend to end me, my love," Malakar said, his tone flat. "We've had this dance before. It resulted in you losing your name, your legacy, and me being imprisoned. And you losing your name meant no one has been praying to you. You're weak, my sweet."A god grows weak when no one prays to them or offers offerings to them. Selanara being forgotten for centuries meant no one has been praying to her. How she was even standing here was a wonder. It has been recorded in history that three gods have vanished to the void after being forgotten

SERAPHINA POV A ball of darkness formed on Malakar's palm, moving like snakes, darker than the night. He was in front of me before I could blink, slamming his palm onto my chest with so much force, I went flying back. The crash of my fall wasn't what made me scream, nor the crack of my bones that made my eyes water. It was the agonizing pain that ate at me from the insides. The pain was beyond anything I’d ever known—like something was eating me alive from the inside, consuming my flesh and bone. My organs twisted, each breath a fire of searing agony, as though my very soul was being ripped apart. I fell to my knees, gasping, screaming, my body shaking uncontrollably. The darkness burrowed deeper, turning everything inside me to dust. I screamed—raw, desperate—and tears streamed down my face as the torment tore through me with brutal force.Joining this brutal pain, I felt the mate bonds in my chest, their own agony adding to my pain. My mates… My mates…I couldn't bring my head

Eryndor was immediately at his side, his head bowed."Yes, Dark One," he answered.Malakar's eyes were still fixed on me when he said, "Restrain her.""Yes, Dark One." Before I could speak, shadows had already coiled around me, restraining me so tightly that I couldn't even move a finger. It felt as though the wall had returned, and once again, my powers were sealed away."You will understand that this is for your own good, Nymeria," Malakar said, his eyes darker than the night. "Your mates are distractions, liabilities. You'll survive without them. Losing your mate's bond would not kill you."I would survive without my mates but it'll leave me empty, hollow, just a shell. Panic squeezed me. I tried to fight against the shadows, but it was useless. The more I fought, the more they tightened, but I still didn't give up. I kept fighting. Death would be better than to live without my mates.Malakar turned away from me and faced

SERAPHINA POV "Oracle," Malakar said, his voice soft and smooth, "This day has been far too long in coming. I've waited an eternity for your wolf to awaken, for your true power to be unleashed." His finger gently pressed against my chin, a subtle reminder of his presence. "My impatience got the better of me at one point. I sent others to test you, thinking a little danger might be the catalyst. Alas, my hopes were dashed when it failed to ignite your transformation." I gasped at him. "Y-you sent people after me?" That wolf that had attacked me in the woods that day I went training with Kaelan in the woods. That soldier that had taunted me and then touched me. My first months in the barracks when those bandits had attacked the barracks. Those were all Malakar. "I did indeed.""But...you were imprisoned," I breathed, my head pounding. "I was," was his short reply. I stared back at Malakar's eyes, feeling a storm of emotions—fear, anger, hate, panic. But underneath all that there wa

I would burn the world to ashes myself if it meant saving them. I looked back at Eryndor standing in front of me, his eyes still pitch black. "Give me your word that you'll release them," I demanded, my voice cold and detached. "Including Miranda."Eryndor nodded. "You have my word."I stared at him, letting him know how painful his death would be if harm were to come to my mates and friend and nodded. I offered him my palm and winced when he cut me, blood flowing out. My mates fought agains
