Ola blinked, startled by the sound of the front door as it banged shut.
"He did not just do that…" She trailed off in her thoughts when she noticed the piece of paper and some money on the table. She picked them up and glanced at the paper which had only two words written on it.
Feed Yourself!
"So that's how it's going to be huh, Michael? Oh well," She said as I pocketed the money. "He'd better not ask for his change."

When Ayo and I pulled up to the venue of the party, we could feel slight vibrations in the car from where we sat.
"Man, that is some wicked bass." Ayo grinned.
"That thing could cause permanent ear damage!”
"Are you kidding me? That right there is the life of the party!" Ayo shouted. "Come on man, I'm all pumped up and ready to go."
I just shook my head in response and got out of the car.
It was normal for Ayo to be so hyper before a performance. I knew he never took any performance-enhancing drugs but his excitement made it seem that way. At the entrance, he knocked twice before the door opened slightly. A chain lock could be seen through the partially open space.
A guy's peered at us questioningly.
"What, is there a secret password now?" I whispered jokingly to Ayo.
Only to look on in disbelief as Ayo flashed something that looked like a bracelet at the guy.
"My friend is with me. It's a special invite." He said.
Shortly after, the guy nodded and shut the door once more. We heard the locks as they were opened. I turned to Ayo and asked.
"Man, what was that about?"
He just shrugged it off.
"Never mind, come on."
The door had opened now and the guy gestured for us to come in. We followed the sound of pulsating music through the hallway and came to a huge room full of people. The DJ played a party club mix that had half of the guests on the dancefloor. My eyes widened slightly at the crazy dance steps being displayed. It was only an hour into the party and it was evident that people had gone wild.
Surely, there must be something in the water.
We made our way over to a private room in the back of the building. The room was dimly lit and a few people lounged around on couches and bean bags as they sipped from cups or played video games.
"You guys made it!" A tall, pretty, girl said as she walked toward us. She was dressed surprisingly casual for a party.
I stood back as Ayo walked up to her and gave her a peck on the cheek.
"Yeah, but I've got two more friends coming later." He said to her then turned to me. "Michael, this is Cindy, the party's host and the birthday girl."
She smiled warmly at me and offered her hand.
"Nice to meet you, Michael. I prefer to be called Cee-Cee though."
I shook her outstretched hand and replied.
"The pleasure is mine. Happy birthday by the way."
"Thanks. I was told that you were performing alongside AY here. I bet you've got a great voice." She purred.
Now this information shocked me speechless.
"Anyway, you guys," She continued. "I'm going to go change for the main attraction. You didn't really think that I'd wear this to my own party right?"
She giggled as she walked away.
As soon as she left, it seemed my voice finally decided to make an appearance. I immediately whirled on Ayo.
"What on earth is she talking about? When did we make this agreement?"
He had the nerve to smirk.
"Consider it a little payback for a certain day courtesy of Laura and I."
I could only gape at him. I tried to recall which day this might have been but came up blank.
"Never mind though, I was sure to only pick songs that you were already familiar with." He tried to reassure me. "Besides, it seems that Cee-Cee is really looking forward to seeing you on stage."
An hour later, I found myself on stage, twirling a pair of drumsticks between my hands while I waited for our cue. I had joined Ayo and some other guys which I had only met an hour ago for a short rehearsal in the building's basement.
I almost couldn't believe that I agreed to this. Not that I was nervous. I had helped Ayo out before with his music in front of small crowds and other gatherings but at least I had been prepared for those. I looked up as he gave the signal. It was our cue to start and also when Cee-Cee would make her grand entrance.
While the song intro kicked up, I relaxed and got into the zone while Ayo hyped up the crowd. Then as the large double doors on a raised platform opened and special effects went up to catch the crowd's attention, Cee-Cee sashayed her way into the room with two toned guys at her side who escorted her.
The band started singing.
"In she walks like a vision ..."
There was a deafening applause when Cee-Cee was fully in sight. Guys in the crowd whistled even as the girls beside them whacked them over the head.
She was dressed in a skintight white and silver dress that sparkled. It stopped a couple inches above her knees and revealed shapely legs encased in ankle boots.
I did a double take. Was that still the same girl I saw earlier? A little bit of glam and she was nearly an entirely different person. When Cee-Cee made her way up to the stage, she danced around with the rest of the band and gave the crowd a show of her own. At some point, she even got Ayo to spin and dip her. When we were done with our performance, we made our way off the stage with the crowd still cheering wildly behind us. I had to admit, I loved every second of it. We went back to the private room.
On my way out, I bumped into Ayo who had made himself at home in the food and drinks section. In his hands were two stuffed bags filled with what I assumed to be takeaways."What's the rush man?" He called out as he spotted me in the crowd."I've got to get home. Something's come up."
"I was instructed to direct you once you arrive. I need you to sign over here first and then I'll take you to your mother."Once I had signed, I looked up eagerly at the nurse for the next step."Please come with me." She said.
"Alright, thank you doctor." Then I suddenly remembered. "What about the medical bills?""I wanted to speak to you about that. The catering company covered a percentage of the bills. However, there is still an outstanding and your mother also needs medication. I'll have the nurse inform you about the exact details."Just then, there was a beeping noise.
"You want to see me?" The man said."Yeah boss, this guy came in here looking for a job." Sam said. The man took a cursory glance at me."W
I was just about to come to a conclusion when I heard the front door bang shut. I quickly changed into my regular clothes at lightning speed. I loved my little sister, but let's face it. If she knew then my mom would find out in about two seconds flat. I heard Ola come up the stairs so I stepped out to meet her. The expression on her face made my grin melt away."What's wrong?" I stooped low to see her eyes but she avoided my gaze.
I stood still as I listened to the words that caught my attention. I clenched my fists at my sides as I held in the anger that grew within me. It was one thing to hear rumours about how your friend was dissed or insulted and another thing entirely to listen to it happen in your presence. "Why on earth would I remain friends with a poor, broke girl like you. I wouldn't want any embarrassment at my party, so I suggest you forget about attending. You are going to bring nothing but shame to yourself anyway if you bother coming."
It was about 10 minutes till my shift at Donny’s café was over and despite how exhausted I felt, I was in a good mood. Even the guys at work noticed."Did you win the lottery or something because I don't see what's making you so happy today?" Ricky raised a suspicious brow at me.I'd gotten
*5 years later*It was the most wonderful time of the year according to the musician, Andy Williams. December 25th was quickly approaching and with less than three days to go, you could feel the excitement in the air. I had booked a ticket from the United States to Nigeria and I was set to return to my home country by Christmas Eve. I had
It was a couple of weeks before our final exams and we studied like crazy. But of course, Idris studied more than anyone else. That guy was like a machine when it came to studies while the rest of us were mere mortals. I had convinced Laura to tutor me in mathematics. It was a subject we all studied despite our different departments at school. It was also the bane of my existence. Laura and I sat on the floor in the sitting room with our mathematics textbooks laid out before us.
I did not know a lot of guys like Michael. Okay, so I did not know a lot of guys, period. Anyway, I had not felt as comfortable around a guy as I did around him. However, the day I saw a movie at the cinema with Michael and his friends, it had all started great until he went to the bathroom and returned agitated. I recalled the uneasy look in his eyes even though he tried to act like everything was okay. I remembered the shock I felt when he grabbed my arm. It made me wonder if there were other sides to him that I had not seen. Well, I guessed everyone had a side to them that other people did
I had only spent a couple of days at my new secondary school but one thing I was sure of was that it was very different from my former school. Everyone here seemed to know each other from somewhere. If it was not kindergarten, it was a primary school, church or they were family friends. I was a stranger in a new place with zero ideas of how I was supposed to survive the new term of school. I was in junior secondary school so you could imagine how it felt to be the new student. People stared when I walked past and they stared some more when we were in class together.
I was livid as I took Kiki out of the hotel and hailed a cab. The cab driver gave us a curious look but didn’t ask any questions. We must have looked a sight to behold. I was furious and it was written plain as day on my face while Kiki was in a wet bathrobe with fear in her expression. I gave the cab driver the address and he drove off. We didn’t speak until we got home and even then I could barely look at her without remembering the scene at the hotel. I did not understand where my innocent 13-year old sister had gone and who this person was in her place. “Caleb,” she whispered with a downcast gaze as her eyes grew misty.“What?” I snapped.“I’m sorry.”“Sorry doesn’t cut it just yet. You have a lot of explaining to do so you better start right now before I lose my temper any further. Tell me how you two met.”“At my friend’s brother’s party.”“Which friend is that?”“Coco, you don’t know her.”“Who is her brother?”“Her brother, Cole is a model, a popular one. Her brother threw a
The night I left town to be out of Donny’s sights was a night I cannot forget in a hurry. Besides, unintentionally scaring Michael and hanging around dark corners of the neighbourhood, I was also afraid of what could happen to me. Coming into town was a risk I had to take for Michael’s sake, especially since I learned that Donny was planning to build up his crime empire again. I had served Donny for several years but I was not sure if my life was safe. After all, I had seen him do many scary things. He had killed before, I saw it happen once. He did not pull the trigger himself but
*A Few Months Later*Michael Damari"That's the last of them," I said as I shut the trunk of the cab and stepped back.
I cleared my throat and tried again. I made my voice as welcoming as possible despite the turmoil of uncertainty that I felt. “I mean, welcome home dad.” “Sit,” he said as he slowly raised the tea cup and took a sip. “Where did you go?”
Cindy ForbesHis sharp gaze settled on me.“What do you mean?” He asked.
