On my way out, I bumped into Ayo who had made himself at home in the food and drinks section. In his hands were two stuffed bags filled with what I assumed to be takeaways.
"What's the rush man?" He called out as he spotted me in the crowd.
"I've got to get home. Something's come up."
He must have noticed something either in my voice or my expression because he suddenly sprang into action.
"Come on, let's go." He said as he moved towards the door.
"Thanks man."
"We're practically brothers. You don't have to thank me. I'll let Idris and Laura know we've left."
Once we got in the car, Ayo revved up the engine and we took off. A few minutes into the ride, I received a call from an unknown number.
"Hello?"
"Hello, am I speaking to Mr. Michael Damari?"
"Yes, this is Michael on the line."
"Very well, I am calling on behalf of Delight Catering Company. This is to inform you that your mother was involved in a kitchen accident. You are required to come to Meyers Hospital immediately. I will text you the address. More information will be provided upon your arrival. We apologise for any distress this might have caused you sir."
I froze. The ability to reply with a coherent sentence, gone.
"Are you there, sir?" The man asked.
"Y-yes, yes I am." I cleared my throat.
"Sir, it is important that you come as soon as possible."
I took in a deep breath and replied.
"I'm on my way. Thank you for calling."
"You have our deepest apologies, sir." The man said, before the call was ended.
I took in a deep breath as I closed my eyes and leaned back against the headrest, lost in thought.
"Michael?… Michael!…" I suddenly snapped out of it when I heard Ayo's voice.
I opened my eyes to find him looking worriedly at me before he focused his attention on the road.
"What exactly is going on?"
"I just got a call that my mom is in the hospital."
The car swerved a bit.
"When did this happen?" Ayo asked with a shocked expression. "She looked completely fine the last time I saw her."
"Just today, at her workplace." I replied.
"What happened to her?"
"She was involved in a kitchen accident."
I couldn't believe that while I had been at some stupid party, my mother was in danger and I hadn't felt anything. No warning, premonition, nothing absolutely nothing to prepare me for this.
"Listen, nothing is going to happen to her, alright." Ayo said. "Now you need to pull yourself together because we're almost at your house. Ola shouldn't see you like this."
I just nodded solemnly.
Ayo saw that I was still in doubt though.
"If she's in the hospital, then there's still hope. They're working to help save her. She's going to be fine."
I felt a bit better after his words.
"You're right." I said.
"Aren't I always?" He said with a cheeky grin as we pulled up in front of my house. "Come on, let's go and get Ola. She'll want to know what's going on."
With that, we both got out of the car and walked into the house. Swift foot steps came down the stairs.
"Hey kiddo."
"Michael, Ayo, you guys are here." She smiled with relief.
"Yes, but just to pick you up. We're all heading out to the hospital. I got the call a few minutes back." I said, as I walked towards her.
"The hospital, is mom going to be alright?"
"She will be alright." I said firmly so as to reassure her.
"Okay." She said in a small voice.
"Have you eaten by the way?" I asked her.
"A couple of hours ago."
"Alright, do you want to grab something to eat before we go?" I asked.
I wasn't sure how long we would spend at the hospital and I didn't want her to get hungry.
"No, I'm coming now." She ran upstairs to get her jacket and shoes.
"What am I going to do man?" I said to Ayo.
Ayo gave me a light nudge on the shoulder.
"Chill out man. First thing we'll do is head out to the hospital and then we'll take it from there."
"Yeah, you're right. I should be so freaked out but I just…" I trailed off.
I knew Ayo understood what I meant. He, Laura and Idris had been there when I lost my dad. It was a slow and agonizing experience. For several weeks, my dad had been confined to a hospital bed, unable to help himself, we couldn't do much to help him and it slowly progressed in that manner until it all became too much to bear and he passed away.
"Listen, your mom isn't going anywhere okay? You aren't going to lose her."
“Okay man.”
"Good." Ayo said as he patted me once on the shoulder.
"I'm ready." We heard Ola say as she came down the stairs.
"Alright. I'll turn off the appliances. Go wait with Ayo in the car."
"Come on kiddo."
Afterwards, I turned on the porch lights and locked the door behind me.
"Ready?" Ayo asked as I got into the car.
"Ready." I replied and we drove off.
We had just entered the building when a nurse walked up to us.
"Mr Damari?" A voice asked.
"Yes, that's me," I replied.
"I was instructed to direct you once you arrive. I need you to sign over here first and then I'll take you to your mother."Once I had signed, I looked up eagerly at the nurse for the next step."Please come with me." She said.
"Alright, thank you doctor." Then I suddenly remembered. "What about the medical bills?""I wanted to speak to you about that. The catering company covered a percentage of the bills. However, there is still an outstanding and your mother also needs medication. I'll have the nurse inform you about the exact details."Just then, there was a beeping noise.
"You want to see me?" The man said."Yeah boss, this guy came in here looking for a job." Sam said. The man took a cursory glance at me."W
I was just about to come to a conclusion when I heard the front door bang shut. I quickly changed into my regular clothes at lightning speed. I loved my little sister, but let's face it. If she knew then my mom would find out in about two seconds flat. I heard Ola come up the stairs so I stepped out to meet her. The expression on her face made my grin melt away."What's wrong?" I stooped low to see her eyes but she avoided my gaze.
I stood still as I listened to the words that caught my attention. I clenched my fists at my sides as I held in the anger that grew within me. It was one thing to hear rumours about how your friend was dissed or insulted and another thing entirely to listen to it happen in your presence. "Why on earth would I remain friends with a poor, broke girl like you. I wouldn't want any embarrassment at my party, so I suggest you forget about attending. You are going to bring nothing but shame to yourself anyway if you bother coming."
It was about 10 minutes till my shift at Donny’s café was over and despite how exhausted I felt, I was in a good mood. Even the guys at work noticed."Did you win the lottery or something because I don't see what's making you so happy today?" Ricky raised a suspicious brow at me.I'd gotten
It was two weeks since my date with Cindy and so far, things were going well. I had also finally gotten over my inability to form coherent sentences around her. She was very outgoing and sometimes made me do silly things just to see her laugh. I was so lost in thought that I was unaware that a small smile had formed across my lips."Since when did the diagram of a dissected guinea pig have the same effect as watching a romantic comedy?" I heard Laura ask.
On Friday afternoon after school, I went to the hospital to see my mom. Before heading out, I packed a portion of the lasagna that our neighbour, Mrs Johnson, had sent to us the previous evening. After seeing that my mom would be in the hospital for a while, she took it upon herself to send us a meal every couple of days to keep us stocked up. Neighbours like her were truly a blessing. When I got there, I waited a while in the lobby to check my phone. I'd asked Cindy to call when she got there so that I could introduce her to my mom, but it seemed like she was running late again.
*5 years later*It was the most wonderful time of the year according to the musician, Andy Williams. December 25th was quickly approaching and with less than three days to go, you could feel the excitement in the air. I had booked a ticket from the United States to Nigeria and I was set to return to my home country by Christmas Eve. I had
It was a couple of weeks before our final exams and we studied like crazy. But of course, Idris studied more than anyone else. That guy was like a machine when it came to studies while the rest of us were mere mortals. I had convinced Laura to tutor me in mathematics. It was a subject we all studied despite our different departments at school. It was also the bane of my existence. Laura and I sat on the floor in the sitting room with our mathematics textbooks laid out before us.
I did not know a lot of guys like Michael. Okay, so I did not know a lot of guys, period. Anyway, I had not felt as comfortable around a guy as I did around him. However, the day I saw a movie at the cinema with Michael and his friends, it had all started great until he went to the bathroom and returned agitated. I recalled the uneasy look in his eyes even though he tried to act like everything was okay. I remembered the shock I felt when he grabbed my arm. It made me wonder if there were other sides to him that I had not seen. Well, I guessed everyone had a side to them that other people did
I had only spent a couple of days at my new secondary school but one thing I was sure of was that it was very different from my former school. Everyone here seemed to know each other from somewhere. If it was not kindergarten, it was a primary school, church or they were family friends. I was a stranger in a new place with zero ideas of how I was supposed to survive the new term of school. I was in junior secondary school so you could imagine how it felt to be the new student. People stared when I walked past and they stared some more when we were in class together.
I was livid as I took Kiki out of the hotel and hailed a cab. The cab driver gave us a curious look but didn’t ask any questions. We must have looked a sight to behold. I was furious and it was written plain as day on my face while Kiki was in a wet bathrobe with fear in her expression. I gave the cab driver the address and he drove off. We didn’t speak until we got home and even then I could barely look at her without remembering the scene at the hotel. I did not understand where my innocent 13-year old sister had gone and who this person was in her place. “Caleb,” she whispered with a downcast gaze as her eyes grew misty.“What?” I snapped.“I’m sorry.”“Sorry doesn’t cut it just yet. You have a lot of explaining to do so you better start right now before I lose my temper any further. Tell me how you two met.”“At my friend’s brother’s party.”“Which friend is that?”“Coco, you don’t know her.”“Who is her brother?”“Her brother, Cole is a model, a popular one. Her brother threw a
The night I left town to be out of Donny’s sights was a night I cannot forget in a hurry. Besides, unintentionally scaring Michael and hanging around dark corners of the neighbourhood, I was also afraid of what could happen to me. Coming into town was a risk I had to take for Michael’s sake, especially since I learned that Donny was planning to build up his crime empire again. I had served Donny for several years but I was not sure if my life was safe. After all, I had seen him do many scary things. He had killed before, I saw it happen once. He did not pull the trigger himself but
*A Few Months Later*Michael Damari"That's the last of them," I said as I shut the trunk of the cab and stepped back.
I cleared my throat and tried again. I made my voice as welcoming as possible despite the turmoil of uncertainty that I felt. “I mean, welcome home dad.” “Sit,” he said as he slowly raised the tea cup and took a sip. “Where did you go?”
Cindy ForbesHis sharp gaze settled on me.“What do you mean?” He asked.
