My mind spun as I processed Heather's words. A child? She had a whelp while away from me all these years? Rage simmered, but I forced it down. There were more pressing matters.

"What is this talk of a child?" I demanded. "Explain yourself."

Heather's expression turned guarded. "I have a son, Alex. Please Lucas, let me go back to him. He needs me."

I absorbed this revelation, uncertainty warring with anger. "And who sired this whelp upon you?" My voice was dangerously soft.

"That's not important. Alex is just an innocent boy, he never hurt you," Heather pleaded.

My hand tightened on her arm. "Tell me who, or I will beat it from your worthless hide later."

Heather lifted her chin. "Never. If you want answers, check your own black heart first."

I nearly struck her for her insolence. But a flicker of unease stirred in my gut. Could she mean...? No, impossible. I would know if the child was mine. Wouldn't I?

I stared Heather down, but she refused to elaborate. Cursing, I relinquish
