"Rory, do you even hear her?" Sonya yelled as she came down the stairs, stomping her thigh-high boots.
I looked up from my laptop and lifted my hands, shrugging.
"I didn't. What's going on?" I asked as I closed my laptop and got up from the living room couch.
"She's being disgusting. That's what! I am sixteen years old. What does she take me for?" Sonya came to a stop in front of me and pointed at the stairs where I saw no glimpse of her mother.
I knew better than to listen to a sixteen-year-old's one side story so I waited for her mother and my mother-in-law, Elizabeth Keller, to come down the stairs.
"What's going on, Beth?" I asked her, a small smile playing on my lips. Teens and their mothers made up for some fascinating drama, and I missed that experience with my mother because I was in a boarding school on another continent, but watching Elizabeth and Sonya fight over the smallest things was very endearing.
"You need to come upstairs and see the dress she has picked out for her date today." Elizabeth pointed upward, shaking her head. "I asked her if she is going to a hotel room afterward."
I gave her a flat look. "She's sixteen."
"Exactly. Do you have no shame, Mother?" Sonya glowered at her mother, who looked anything but ashamed of the inquiry she had made. I have learned that mothers were usually immune to any sort of embarrassment when it came to asking their daughters the most inappropriate of questions.
I shook my head and turned around to face my sister-in-law. "That being said, I would like to see what exactly have you come up with that has your mother's panties in a twist."
Sonya nodded confidently.
I personally knew that Elizabeth could be a bit extreme when it came to Sonya's sense of style. I knew it was just her maternal love but Sonya was not at the age to understand that right now. So I usually found myself being the referee in their spats.
"If Rory gives me the go, I am wearing the dress." Sonya turned to her mother.
"If Rory thinks it's okay, then I will allow it." Elizabeth huffed. She too seemed confident that I would not allow the dress. Oh boy!
I wondered what she would think of all the dresses I walk around wearing at clubs and casual parties.
"Beth!" The three of us were immediately alerted by the angry shout of Simon, my father-in-law. He was not the kind of person to ever raise his voice, no matter what the situation; he always had such a good temper. What happened?
"Honey Bun, what's wrong?" Elizabeth quickly made her way to the front door.
"Any idea what might have happened?" Sonya asked me.
I shrugged. "No idea. Let's go find out."
Simon was violently tapping away at his phone as Elizabeth approached him. He shoved it in her face, not registering Sonya and my presence in the room yet.
"Talk to your son! Tell him that if his infidelity ruins his beautiful marriage to that sweet girl, I will bring his company down to bankruptcy."
Elizabeth stared at the phone and then looked over at me, panic evident in her features.
"Rory..." Simon finally saw me there and he too was tongue-tied.
I took out my own phone and typed in my husband's name – Rowan Keller. And I was not surprised to see that there were articles about him and his girlfriend Ophelia Mathewson. They were snapped exchanging saliva on a beach in France. My lips twitched and I had to fight my face to suppress the scowl threatening to make an appearance and I barely managed to swallow back the bundle of vocabulary I had for occasions like this.
I gulped down the bile that rose in my throat and smiled weakly at Elizabeth and Simon.
Sonya swore next to me and I looked over to see that she too had her phone out.
"I have some work at the office." I hated how shaky my voice was.
Why the hell was I the one suffering? Why should I control myself?
"I will come visit another day."
I could hear them calling out my name but I dashed out of the house as fast as I could, getting into my grey convertible and driving off.
I took deep breaths to calm myself and then speed-dialed the asshole.
The phone was picked up after a good few exasperating moments.
"Hello?" I heard the raspy voice of the woman I currently hated with a passion.
"Where's Rowan, Ophelia?" I asked, my voice thick with venom. I really did not have the time for the shit that I knew she was going to start spewing.
"Babe is right here, but he really doesn't want his perfect day to be interrupted by your annoying yapping." She said. And I knew that it was the great Rowan himself who had put such words in her mouth.
I rolled my eyes.
Did I care about what she or he had to say? Hmm, let me think... Absolutely not.
"Hand the phone over to Rowan unless you want me to interrupt the whole of your Europe trip."
There was silence for a moment and finally, she huffed and after a few shuffling, I heard the voice of my husband. "What is it, Aurora?"
He must be the only person I was related to who called me by my full name. That's how distant we were.
I let out a sigh.
"I don't have time to waste on you so make it quick." He added before I could utter a word.
I closed my eyes, feeling my anger rise to another level.
I don't know what happened, because I was always pretty collected about the relationship. We were married only for business benefits. We even had a contract. And I had to bury my feelings deep down when I signed it. But right now, to me, it was more trouble than it was worth.
The sand in the hourglass had finally run out.
"I want a divorce."
~2 years ago~"This is such great news!" Bianca Stanley, my best friend, squealed as she jumped around in our apartment. I rolled my eyes, sitting back on the couch and resuming the movie I was watching."I know." I smiled. "Dad finally thinks I am ready to face the world."Bianca stopped hopping around and looked at me with a wide smile on her face and pride in her eyes. "My baby is all grown up." She sniffed dramatically as she wiped away invisible tears making me roll my eyes. "You make Momma hen so proud.""All right drama hen. Sit down!" I patted the spot next to me on the couch. She sat down excitedly and gave me a side hug, not failing to rearrange a few bones in the process. She had too much strength that she wasn't aware of."We will go clubbing!" She exclaimed. "I will inform all our friends and we will go clubbing to celebrate you finally getting the job that you wanted in your dream company."She was already on her phone as she spoke and I knew better than to try to talk h

"I think there is, Aurora. Because you clearly could not have just said what I think you did." Obviously, what I said must have gotten rid of all of his sleep because his voice is clear and alert now."Try listening more carefully now Rowan. I said I want a divorce." "Excuse me?" The indignancy in his voice makes me almost want to snort. He is reacting as if he did not see that coming despite his actions."You heard what I said, Rowan." I roll my eyes again as I take the turn to our penthouse. "I am going into the apartment and packing my bags right now.""We signed a contract!" There is shuffling on the other side and panic in his voice. He cannot get a divorce now, because if he did, then Simon will pull out all the investments he has made for the new project. It is one of the reasons

They said that it is my apartment and Bianca and I used to share the place before my marriage. But I refused, feeling that I should not invade the privacy of the married couple. And also because I may be the landlady but they are tenants who pay their rent on time.My first thought was to stay at a hotel until I found a place, but then I realized – why should I pay to stay somewhere when I have a friend with a uselessly big condo all to himself?Eric is out of town due to a conference but on calling him, he informed the security guard to let me borrow the spare key he had. The idiot asked me to try to clean up the place while I am staying over, but I have a feeling that he was saying that just to lighten the mood.He might be a monkey and a complete womanizer – worse than my ex-husband-to-be – but he is an amazing friend and he knows to respect people, unlike my ex-husban

Wow, this is probably more than all the calls and messages he has made to me in the last two years.I am contemplating whether to call back and see what he wants or let him worry some more about the fate of his company when the doorbell rings.I stand up from the couch and with my hand wrapped firmly around my phone, make my way to the door, pressing on the security cam button.I raise a brow when I see that it is Joshua Steelman, Rowan's secretary. The dude is so desperate to get in contact with me now that he sent his secretary looking for me huh?I open the door."Joshua." I smile at the middle-aged man but get no smile in return. Like Boss, like secretary!"Mrs. Keller." He addresses me, his lips in a thin line. I have told him one million times that my name is Ms. Lewis, not Mrs. Keller, but the man just does not learn. This dude is a total ass-kisser and does whatever Rowan wants him to.
_______________________...I am shocked to see the condition my mother is in when I visit my parents. I just arrived in New York yesterday night and the only reason why I got to get any rest is because they needed it too, otherwise, it does not look like my father cares even the tiniest about me. Well, it's not like he ever did. "She really asked for a divorce?" She asks. "She really left your home?""Yes, she did." Dad looks almost annoyed at my mother, though it is nothing compared to the death glare he has etched on his face every time he glances over at me. "What else did you expect, Beth? That poor kid must have gotten fed up of everything that she has had to put up with because of her wretched marriage to this insolent brat of yours! It was a long time coming and you knew it so no need to pretend to be all shocked now.""But I wish she would just talk to me. Maybe I could have talked her out of her decision!" My Mom continues to wail. As much as I did not want my Mom to eve

And it is safe to say that it was the only moment in the whole of my marriage when he was the reason for my smile. He has only left bitterness in this marriage now. And I don't understand why I sit and ponder on the same things over and over again. Rowan and I were nothing but a business deal and all through the two years of hell that everyone including myself called a marriage, he made sure that I remembered my place in his life - or to be more specific, he made sure that I remembered that I had NO place in his life."What are you looking at?" Roselyn's voice breaks me out of the series of bizarre and nightmarish thoughts in my head.I show her my phone."Walking down that aisle was the last beautiful memory of my life." I sigh. Well, that is a bit dramatic - I have had good memories in the last two years e

It's going to be alright." Roselyn rubs my back as I cry into her shoulder, her bump in the way. I felt the babies kick one or two times and Roselyn told me that even my niece and nephew were worried about me. But that just made me cry even harder."I do not need your permission to see my wife!" Rowan sounds so angry and he is so freaking loud that the both of us jump. My wife? Really? After all that he has done in the past two years, he is really going to stand there and assert his relationship with me? I know that Bianca is a match for him. Actually, Rowan is not a match for Bianca. She can do more damage with words than anyone can physically. She is that bitch who will spit fire to protect her loved ones."Oh yeah, but you need permission to enter this cond

Roselyn wanted to know if there was something that I was hiding from them, but I could not tell them or anyone what I was going through right now. I was facing a dilemma that I could not overcome. It was safe to say that I was at an impasse. It was safe to say that I had become a puppet and I had handed all the strings to Rowan Keller.Fuck.How did this come to be?I wish someone would just take me away from all of this!"What the hell are you thinking, Rory?" Gabriella is screaming through the video call while I unpack my bags. Yep, I am back at the penthouse, and I feel so utterly humiliated and as if all of my self-esteem were thrown onto the floor and trampled upon.Rowan and I know what is the thing that is keeping me from getting a divorce, but to the rest of the world, I am the spineless wife who took back her husband without putting up a fight or showing anything that a woman with minim

I cut the overenthusiastic wedding planner off.Gabby rolled her eyes. "You know too much." She told the oblivious lady who just grinned as if it was a compliment. It probably is."You okay?" I whispered to her as I fixed the last daisy.Gabby took a deep breath and nodded. "Yeah, I'm just... nervous.""You're going to marry the love of your life," I said, smiling at her through the mirror. "What's not to be happy about?"Gabby took a deep breath. "It's just... everything is happening so fast. And what if it's not enough?""What do you mean?" I asked, my hand on her shoulder. "You dated him three years before you are marr

Eric laughed as he wrapped his arms around my sister. "I know to woo my woman right.""Well, in my defense, it takes a lifetime of groveling to make up for the kind of mistakes I made." I shrugged, laughing even though I felt a pang in my chest. I had fucked up so bad.Gabby's eyes searched mine. "I know you're sorry.""But is that enough?" I asked, my voice low.Gabby looked at me, understanding in her eyes. "You know she loves you, right?"I nodded. "I know." But love was a fickle thing, and I had learned that the hard way. "But I hurt her, Gabby. Deeply.""And you're going to have to prove it to her," she said, her tone gentle but firm. "Every day. With every action, every word. You need

"I've got it," I called out as I made my way to the door.Opening it, I was surprised to find Eric standing outside. "What's going on?" I asked, my heart racing. He looked serious, his eyes darting around the hallway before he stepped inside. "We need to talk," he said, his voice low and urgent.Beth looked up from the TV, curiosity piqued. "Everything okay?""I'll handle it," I told her, guiding Eric into the kitchen. "What's going on?"He leaned against the counter, his eyes searching mine. "I found something out about Derek," he began, his tone serious. "It's... it's not good."My heart skipped a beat. "What is it?"Eric took a deep breath. "Derek isn't just obsessed with Rory. He's got a history of stalking and harassment. I found some old police reports."My stomach dropped. "What kind of history?""It goes back years," Eric sa

She repeated the same tale of my betrayal at least once a day. Especially when she wanted something from me."Spit it out." I rolled my eyes. "What do you want from me?"Gabby took a deep breath, her hands stilling in my hair. "I want you to promise me that you'll always tell me the truth, no matter what."I looked at her weirdly in the mirror. "Okay.""And that you will get me an electric blue Porsche." She grinned in the mirror.I snorted. "That sounded like my sister.""You are taking over Dad's position soon. You will have money of your own then. Get with that." I told her as she twisted my hair into an elegant knot."But what about you, Rory?" Gabby's voice turned serious. "What do you want?"I took a deep breath. "I want peace," I said finally. "For all of us."Gabby nodded, her expression thoughtful. "That's all I w

I shot back, pacing the tiny cell. "I've never been in jail before! And now, because of Stacy and Charles, I'm going to have a record!""Charles has said that he will drop the charges." Eric said but I knew there was more to that story."Why?" I asked. "I am sure he would not have done it for free."Charles was never a good person. He was just amazing for me. And as someone who didn't really deserve a good person, I had decided to settle with him. But the dude had cheated even before the relationship had even started. That's what got on my nerves."Does it matter?" Eric sighed. "The procedures will be completed in a few moments and then we can leave."The door to the cell opened, and a female police officer stepped in. She was tall, with stern eyes that scanned me up and down. "Gabriella Lewis, you are fre

That much I remember. But when I opened my eyes, I was back in the van.Derek's crazed face loomed over me, the gun pointed directly at my forehead. "You shouldn't have done that, Rory," he whispered, his voice a chilling echo in the confined space.I jolted awake, my heart racing and my breath coming in shallow gasps. The room was dark, the only light coming from the night lamp, casting eerie shadows across the floor. I was in my own bed, in my own apartment, with Rowan sleeping peacefully beside me. But the fear lingered, clinging to me like a second skin.It was just a nightmare, I told myself, over and over again. But the cold sweat on my forehead and the pounding in my chest said otherwise. The image of Derek's furious face, the gun pointed at me, the sound of the shot ringing in my ears—it all felt too real.Rowan stirred beside me, his hand moving to rest on my back. "Rory, you okay?""It was just a bad dream," I whispe

Was she shot trying to save me?I had to save Ophelia if she was still alive.Ignoring the pain in my shoulder, I rushed to open the van.I peeked inside. Derek was on the floor, his hand slack around the gun. Ophelia was kneeling beside him, her hands shaking as she tried to stem the flow of blood from his leg."Oh my God, Derek! Is he okay?" I rushed to Ophelia's side."He fainted on impact." Ophelia was crying. "Quick. My phone is in my car outside. Call 9-1-1."I nodded, the shock slowly wearing off. I rushed to the car and got in, using the phone I found in her purse to call the police and ambulance. I gave them Rowan's name and address for them to contact him as well because the phone was locked. When I got back to the van, Derek was regaining consciousness. "Aurora, I think it's better for you to leave now. Give me my phone and get in my car and leave before he wakes up." I sh

I had the perfect life planned out for the both of us but you kept going back to that bastard who had the least respect for you.""What are you talking about, Derek? "You were too wrapped up around Rowan Keller to actually notice other people's feelings.""I'm sorry," I whispered, trying to keep the tremble out of my voice. "But this isn't the way to deal with it. I told him, my heart racing."Let's go together," Jake offered, his eyes sharp.I nodded, and we sprinted down the escalator of the mall. We had been looking for Ki and Mary here."What if they are not there?" I panted, my legs burning from the run."Then we widen the search," Jake said grimly. We dashed out of the mall into the blinding sunlight, our eyes scanning the bustling street. The park was only a few minutes away, and the tension grew with every second that ticked by."What could have happened?" I whispered to myself, fear for Ki gnawing at my insides. Now Rory was also not picking up the phone.I had a bad feeling about all of this. The park was eerily quiet, not a soul in sight. We reached the parking lot. Something glinting on the ground caught my sight.A phone.Rory's phone. My heart sank. "Jake, look." I p
