The next evening, came with the cries of the woman in the Girl’s Wing of the Guild. Making me cringe. The terror in her voice rang through the castle. And I was sure we weren’t the only ones cowering from that dreadful sound.

She has some lungs.

There’s power in that voice.

A long pause cut the night. And we knew it was him telling the guards he was taking yet another up to his chambers.

Never to be seen from again.

And once more the guards allowed it.

He tossed Alyssa in and slammed the door just as viciously as he’d done to Sunny.

A show for anyone who watched.

“Why do they let you keep bringing them up?” I blurted as he closed the door behind him.

“Because I tell them I wish it. And they’d rather not argue with me. And we all know the King cares little when mages die.”

“And they believe you’re killing us.” Tanya filled in.

Alyssa was looking around at all of

She can’t possibly endure more. I thought. But Killian was already off. Heading back downstairs. That was the question he’d been asking. Could she take more? Willow was a creature of pure lust. The more Killian brought, the more she took. I finally had to rally the others to draw them to a far corner and feed them their rations. But soon they had returned to eat standing over her. Wearing those paralyzed expressions. I was too tired to watch. Soon going to sit with Killian at the table as he skimmed the pages. “You’re tired.” He put his hand over mine without looking up. “You should get some rest.” “How could anyone sleep through that?” I gestured to the snakelike pile of bodies on the floor. The moaning and slapping echoing through the room as Willow consumed their pleasure. Bending their will to hers as she fed their lust. A strange exchange, indeed.

He slumped to the side and had to brace himself on the table. Seeing he was off balance, I set the bird on a fur rug out of the range of the dumping rain pouring in through the balcony door. I rushed over and slammed it closed. Sealing out the gusting wind. Killian was still staring at the huge red bird as if he couldn’t believe it was truly there. Like it might be a figment of his imagination. Curious beyond belief, I slipped the page from his hand and inspected it. Reading it and rereading it. Seeing he’d paled I lifted it toward him. “What’s this mean?” “Magnus and Hawk did what I freed them to do.” “What did you charge them with?” He’d freed them for a specific purpose. I suppose I should’ve known that because there was always a plot behind Warlord’s actions, but I found myself faintly disappointed because I’d rather enjoyed thinking he’d freed them from the kindness of his soul. Eventually Willow was able to crawl from the collapsed bodies of the males surrounding her. Retreating to a far wall to sit with her head slumped against it. Her body covered in sweat and, from the way she moved, aching from head to toe. I couldn’t blame her. They’d all been at it for hours. Male after male, climbing under her, over her, stroking into her mouth. Using every crevice and mound of her body to sate their desperate need for her. I’d never seen anything like it. She’d endured it, seemingly enjoying it, until everyone of them had collapsed into a pile around her. Her arms and legs trembled from the exertion, and she was trying to say something through a raw throat. “What?” I leaned down to hear her. Catching the smell of sex all over her. “Water.” I rushed to where Warlord kept a pitcher near the window and brought it over. Helping Willow get it to her lips where she gurgled thirstily. Sloshin

“You seem to know an awful lot.” “I should.” “Why?” “Because you have my mate in that tower.” He nodded upward. “She doesn’t know I can feel her already, that I can sense her thoughts.” “So these whispers were her thoughts?” Rampage lowered his head in admonition. Warlord knew of only one she-wolf in that tower. And he wasn’t willing to share. “Does she know she’s your mate?” “Not in the least. Not yet. I plan to claim her under the Mating Moon.” “You best plan well, Boy.” “Why?” Rampage sensed the sudden challenge on Warlord’s face. “Because the she-wolf up there is mine.” “Like you I’m both wolf and mage. My intended mate is no wolf.” “You’d choose a mage?” “I want her.” “To each man, his own.” “Will you let me help you with the book then?” Rampage queried. “I’ll take you up into my tower and see what you’re capable of. But you betray me, and I’ll

There was a beat in the room that seemed to thrum faster. Making the walls themselves feel as though they were humming. I looked around fearfully, wondering if the tower would collapse in around us from the exertion of power within its depths. Tanya and Rampage’s hair blew in the wind that was conjured like the hand of a force that couldn’t be seen. Working through the book with expert precision. Stopping on a page or two as if some giant leaned over us to inspect them more thoroughly. Soon another wisping strand jutted from Rampage and aimed in our direction. Rearing up like the head of a threatening snake before shooting toward us at a ludicrous speed. I took a step away from Killian. Certain that it was coming for him. Needing his magic. I gasped when it divided at the last moment and speared into both of us. It felt like someone had plugged something into me to draw my very life force. It was hard to breathe. Feeling like minutes

It was early morning. And the day was blue and bright. With the hint of a steamy fog still lurking just above the ground. I could hear the other mages down in the Training Gardens. Tanya came over to put a hand on my shoulder. “Are you ready for today?” “Ready as I’ll ever be.” “Warlord told me how you got the book. That was really brave.” I gave her a sideways glance. “Thank you.” She had softened much just in the last few days. I suspected, though I knew she’d never admit it, that was in-part because of the presence of Rampage up here. The man who, even now, watched her like a meal he intended to consume. I glanced over and saw him leaning against the wall. One booted foot flat against the wall behind him. One arm draped leisurely across his stomach while the other thoughtfully stroked his dimpled chin beneath that fall of reddish hair surrounding his face in shadows. His gaze intense as he watched Tanya’s eve

The smoke swallowed us. Coating everything in darkness. “Touch him.” Willow whispered. Her mages moving in to surround us. Putting hands on Killian and Rampage’s shoulders and then on the mages further out, to keep us all huddled in a tight circle. At the front was Killian who waited for the rest of us to link. Then he took a long step to teach us the pace. We moved with him. Me, still pinched between the hips of he and Rampage who were leading the path. A knight stepped through the bleak haze, and saw Rampage. Lunging forward to pierce at him with the tip of his sword. Rampage ducked beneath it and batted the flat side upward and then aside so he could catch the man by the throat. “Should have ran away.” He growled before twisting his wrist and snapping the man’s neck in a gesture which seemed terrifyingly easy. Then he let the man fall limply to the ground. Kicking him to send him sliding across the ma

Two Days Earlier Magus knew it was late but he needed to break away from Vanna Rae and her vicious mates. And Hawk was acting particularly strange tonight. Up to something. Magus knew. But at this point he knew he’d simply have to follow along with whatever foolhardy plan the mage Commander had concocted. Magus was using a bit of crow’s blood and a feather the sentinel had offered him to scribble one line on a bit of parchment before rolling it up. He tucked it into the scaled foot of the large red bird. He leaned close to murmur to it. It bobbed it’s head in understanding. Before taking off. Huge red wings swooping as they carried it high into the sky. It took several hours for the bird to cross over the tree-tops in the dead of night. Escaping the hungry talons of several night birds to wind toward the twisted tower atop a dead mountain. Finally reaching it, it had to evade the raging wall of flames surround

Lyra Lani was holding her arms out in welcome. I noted that her arms were slightly bloodied and there was another splash marring her delicate chin and silky blonde curls. But both women were heedless as Vanna Rae embraced her. Clearly old friends. I was a bit jealous. Having never had a she-wolf to confide in like that. Only those that raised me. But now I had a mate, and it would be nice to discuss what that meant with someone. As if sensing my thoughts, Vanna Rae peered back at Killian. Returning to hug him as well. Then she turned her attention to me. I was astonished by how truly striking she was this close. With gorgeous blue eyes. Smooth light blonde hair and a figure that one as skinny as me was sure to envy. “And you,” She shook my shoulder lightly. “You I must thank for helping bring my brother back to me.” She smiled up at Killian. “Am I to understand you are his mate?

It was nearly too much for King Detry to bear. “Irasus!” He roared. Expecting her to skitter from the trees for the sound thrashing he’d execute on her. He was faintly surprised when she didn’t come out with her head ducked like a whipped hound. He called for her again. Slowing his horse. “Do you think she’ll come back?” Callum asked. Helping his mentor onto a horse. “She’d be a fool too.” Roderick whispered as he mounted. “What are you looking at?” Callum asked. Seeing Roderick staring over his head at the bleak mage still standing in the center of the camp. “I suspect, our future.” “What are you thinking?” “I’m thinking that is a King that I’d serve.” “Why?” “Did you see the way the others rushed to defend him. His own willingness to be in the thick of battle?” He looked over his shoulder at their retreating King. “I did…” Callum said thoughtfully. “You’re thinking on joining h

“I cursed myself.” Irasus proudly admitted in answer to Killian’s question. “To what?” She smiled evilly. “To feel nothing.” He murmured. Eyes widening on her. Sensing she was about to strike, he moved before her. Sending lashing strands of smoky magic out to devour her. But she bent the trees to her will. Forcing them over to weave and intertwine before her. “No, you don’t.” She heard a feminine whisper somewhere near her right but didn’t give it the credit she should’ve. Suddenly the trees ripped from her grip. Leaning away to weave behind her. Pushing her forward and out into the opening. Despite all Irasus’ efforts at using magic to hook into them, they no longer obeyed her. She spun her head and saw the pretty young woman touching a tree far too her right. She sent rocks flying that direction but that smoky magic struck first. Blocking them with an invisible barrier. So, they toppled haplessly to the ground.

“What is she doing?” Callum coughed. The young knight fighting to breathe as he sent the older knight, Roderick a worried look. “Making the perimeter. They won’t be able to breathe if they try to leave.” “We have to ride through that!” “We can get through faster than they can. We’re on horseback. Just hold your breath boy.” “This is foolish.” Callum jerked his horse’s rein. Tempted to turn back. Despite all his brave words from the night before. Rodrick didn’t argue. “Forward.” Detry waved. But he waited for Roderick, Callum and many of the others to go through first. There was much coughing and gasping. And many knights immediately turned back. Afraid of the place where breathing became nearly impossible. “What are you waiting for!” Detry bellowed. Drawing his short sword to point in the direction. “Get through!” They were surely creating enough racket that the wolf pack would be sure to know they were

“I’m a very good Healer.” “Yes, you are.” Killian remarked. “I envy the Asara for your presence.” “They’ve been very good to me.” But she was already looking off into the distance. Looking for Fury. I realized. Wondering if her suffering under the Mating Moon had been as great as the rest of ours. “Come, Jade.” He lifted me into his arms. “I want to get you back indoors until you feel a bit better.” “What are you going to do?” “First I’m going to send my sister and those vicious mates of hers, after the NightHunters trail.” “You want her to get out of this camp before Detry gets here.” I called him on the truth of his intentions. He gave me a chiding look. “You know me a bit too well.” “I know how protective you are.” “I wish I could send you ahead.” “I wouldn’t go.” He snorted. “I know.” “Which is why you wanted to lock me indoors.” I gave him a pensive study. “

I swung my back end around and knocked the door closed. Jerking it from his hand. He freely let it go. Giving me severe study. “You understand what you’ve done, She-Wolf?” I bobbed my head. Walking further in, I lowered to my chest on the pile of clothes. Dropping the front of my body but leaving my backside up in offering. He didn’t hesitate. Turning he lunged across the room. Black fur peeling through his skin along his arms and shoulders then up his neck and along his cheekbones until those blue eyes were entirely surrounded by midnight fur. Just as striking as I’d first guessed he would be. He loped the last couple steps and climbed over me. Catching my scruff in his teeth as he slid into me again. The night was rough. And I was sore. My mate returned to human form just as daylight crested. He was exhausted and disheveled and barely managed to slump to the floor. Fur falling away and skin smoothing i

I nibbled along his throat. Knowing that if I wanted to, I could’ve torn it out. He was entirely vulnerable to me in that moment. Naked, exposed and ball deep in my core. I entirely possessed him. Just as much as he did, me. “Yes!” He growled primally. Agreeing that he was what I decreed. The great Warlord. Mine. Mine to give pleasure, mine to harm. Though I would never do so, the fact that I could get close enough to, reminded me of how intimate the act we did just now was. How connected we are. Then we both erupted. I hooked my legs over his hips. Digging my heels into the backs of his thighs just as he slapped the wall next to me. Raking it with wolf claws as he fought for control of his wild body. Together we slid to the floor. Spent. Or so I thought. He barely paused to catch his breath. Before rolling me onto all fours and mounting me from behind. His ches

They nodded back at him. A wave of relief washed over me. I found myself feeling weak. Not only because Killian was okay but because he was declaring for all eyes to see that I was his... Killian finished his announcement and crossed the camp to embrace me. I nearly threw myself into his arms. My skin feeling as though it were on fire. “Come.” He whispered. He was kind, patient. Then there was the first time I saw him smile. Everything I’d thought about him before that had shattered and I’d felt true desire. Beginning to realize he was far different then he’d first seemed. “There’s more to it than just guarding me.” I said to Aviari, watching his face carefully. “You’re right.” He said in a strained voice. “Though he would rip my throat if I let something happen to you, this is not my fight.” “But it’s your sister!” I argued. “Yes. And she knows I love her. But this,” He gestured to the entirety of the camp. “All of this. Is his night.” His? Killian’s? “For what?” “To become what he really is.” Aviari smiled proudly. Looking up at the pink moon he added. “Under a Mating Moon, no less. Isn’t that fitting?” His head dropped and he was giving me a pointed study. “Why are you looking at me like that?” “Because
