A couple of years have passed since the trial began. Humanity is quick to adapt. Different organizations rose from the ground up. Players. Awakened. Hunters. Heroes. The chosen. People had different terms for those who have had their souls weighed. The accepted terms for these individuals are ‘Breakers’.
Their goals are the same: to prevent a repeat of the tragedy of the first day. At least, on the surface.
The existence of transcended humans is part of the norm. It integrated into society. As if it were a phase that everyone would go through.
“This is Sera Mckenna,” a woman spoke through her earpiece. She had fiery red hair and eyes. Flames danced around her wrists before fading. As the flames died, her hair became a blonde color. Her eyes also turned blue.
“We have secured the civilians that got caught up in the conflux zone.” She ended the call with that.
Conflux zones are areas near the rifts when they manifest. Some rifts connect to the same dimension, making them accessible from various points. Manifesting rifts tend to be unstable. Due to this, those caught in the conflux zone are often sent to a different rift. It's not uncommon for civilians to end up in rifts in other countries. Procedures and protocols have been put into place to deal with these situations.
Sera looked back at the rift she exited. Several other people started to emerge. They were escorting the civilians out of the rift, even carrying them if necessary.
“Good job, rookie,” a tall, muscular man complimented Sera. The man had graying hair. The lines on his face and his beard showed his age. But it was clear that he was still in his prime. He was carrying two unconscious people on his shoulders.
“We could have done better, Commander, sir,” she responded solemnly. They could not rescue everyone. Those that ended up deeper in the rift were helpless against the monsters.
“Don't beat yourself over it.” He tried to console her. “You can't save everyone. You need to get used to that. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't try but it can't be helped.”
“What matters is that we did our best,” the man said as several other people exited the rift. The medical teams were on standby outside the gate. They prioritized treating those with severe injuries. Unfortunately, there were still those with grave injuries. Some of them succumbed to their wounds.
“Come on, come on. Don't you die on me now,” one of the healers cried out. She was doing her best to save one of the severely injured civilians. It was a young man, or what remained of him.
He was part of the group that ended up deeper in the rift. He tried to fend off as many of the smaller beasts as he could before the team arrived. But in the end, he was still a regular human. There was little he could do but buy time.
One of the monsters almost tore him in half before the team arrived. Right now, he is hanging on by a thread. Unfortunately, they were unable to save his legs. It was impossible to exit the rift without finishing the raid. By the time the raid finished, he already lost a lot of blood.
“Damn it!” The healer cursed. Wounds can be healed with skills and potions. But blood loss is difficult to deal with. She placed her fists on his chest and started applying compressions. His heart had stopped.
It got some attention from the other rescued civilians. There was a moment of silence. The commander placed his hand on the healer's shoulder. She was still applying chest compressions even though it was already too—
It was then that the young man started to cough up blood. He resumed breathing as his eyes shot open. His irises faded and his sclera glowed white.
“Well, I'll be damned.” The commander smirked and gave the healer a congratulatory pat on the back. The healer's knees weakened and she almost collapsed. “Good job. Leave this to us.”
“Sera. Your team will secure this patient, stat!” He barked his orders. The members of her squad sprung into action immediately. The commander turned back to the young man who was on the verge of losing consciousness once more. “A weigh-in at death's door. Now I've seen everything.”
People are able to time their weigh-in (the weighing of the soul) because of the notifications. There are facilities that provide a secure area for these instances. The person themself would not be vulnerable. Divine protection blessed them during this time. But, they can still be moved and abducted. Some have woken up in a different place. There are syndicates that have taken advantage of this.
Because of the protection, the young man's life wouldn’t be in danger from his injuries. Still, they needed to transport him to a facility. Since the raiding team completed their role, they were assigned as an escort.
It was only one life. One person that struggled to survive. But that struggle brought up morale, even if by a little. They could not save everyone, no. But they will damn well try their hardest.
The day ended differently for people. Some were relieved. After going through such hardship, they were finally out of the rift. There are people assigned to assist them with their recovery. This included their way to return home.
Some were grieving at their loss. This was not uncommon. But it was still painful nonetheless. They directed their anger and sorrow at the breakers at the scene. Why weren't their loved ones rescued? Why were they too late? Why did they not get healed enough? The breakers understood that this was their grief and anger lashing out.
---
His eyes fluttered open. His vision started to clear. He blinked a couple of times until he could make out the ceiling.
“Gah!” He gasped once he came to. He immediately sat up and started patting his body. His injuries were healed. Not even a scar was left. His limbs were still attached to his body. He thought of certain that he had lost them. No, he definitely lost them.
He started to laugh. His palm against the upper half of his face. “Damn it. Was that payback from Astraea?” He smirked, lips tinted with mischief.
“Right... where am I?” He muttered to himself as he looked around the empty room.
Rewinding back, they had discussed how to send him to Earth. If he were to descend, his presence would be noticed immediately. They had to find a way to reduce his presence. It was easy in concept, difficult in execution. His power had to be limited to a severe extent. He would start out from the bottom. Astraea would give him back his power bit by bit using the Breaker System. He would have to handle the accomplishments on his side, though.
The other issue was Astraea was incompatible with him. But that was if it were through regular means. For the contract, she offered everything to him. By sealing the deal, it solved the compatibility issue as she was already considered ‘his’.
The body she prepared for him was a person that already died. As the soul of the person departed, the body was turned into a vessel. He inherited some of the last memories of that person. But the thing is, that person died inside the rift. The Void Contract was already in control when he was fending off the beasts. It would have been impossible otherwise.
Because the vessel was human, and a normal one at that, he managed to escape death. It was quite the close call. Though, if he had died, he would find another vessel instead. That might be noticed by some of the gods, though. It was better this way. The weigh-in at death's door was on purpose as well. It was formality at that point. He didn't go through any trial. It was so he had the time for his vessel to become a breaker and recover.
“How problematic,” he sighed. He will have to deal with those involved in his vessel's death in the future. It was the least he could do for the soul that perished. “Still, did she really have to throw me in the midst of all those beasts? But... I guess I'm a bit to blame for that. Still, I certainly have an interesting role this time, huh?”
Meanwhile, back at her domain, Astraea was rolling around on her bed. She was flustered and annoyed. A cloud pillow was being squished in her arms. Her feet were flailing in frustration.
“Ah! That man!” She buried her face on the pillow and tried to calm down. She was in quite a promiscuous state. Her hair disheveled. Only a cloud blanket covering her body. She wasn't really angry. But the events of ‘sealing the contract’ only started to catch up to her. Now that she was thinking about it again, her pale complexion turned quite a crimson hue. She personally found out how the ‘devourer of goddesses’ rumor came about.
“He could have been a bit more gentle.” She pouted a bit. To get back at him, she made his start a bit more difficult.
“Name?” “Q.” “P-pardon?” That was not the answer the doctor was expecting. He was inspecting the patient's pupils for any abnormality. That response caught him off guard. “Q. My name is Q,” he reiterated. There was nothing on him that held any identification. He didn't even have a wallet or anything of the sort. That in itself was peculiar. The other civilians were done being treated. They sent those well enough to the agency that will assist them in getting back home. It was a normal procedure. This patient was the most gravely injured. And yet... “Vital signs appear to be normal. Limbs are… normal.” He hesitated a bit. There was nothing wrong with the patient's limbs. Well
“Please change into this,” Estelle said as she gave Avis Walker a blue tracksuit. Some of the staff often referred to him as Subject Q. “Alright.” He took the tracksuit and had a feel of it before he started taking off his clothes. Estelle was slightly flustered as she recalled their previous hookup. “Excuse me,” she said and left the room in a hurry. “It's all part of the job,” she told herself as she regained her composure. This wasn't the first time she used her charm to extract information. Her eyes have an ability to affect the mentality of a person. She never had the chance to use it on him, though. There was no need. She just didn't expect him to be so straightforward. Q opened the door and went out of the room. He looked back for a moment and chuckled. They w
The training dummy's head rolled away as the body fell backward. “Did anyone get any data from that?” The assessment team in the observation room was scrambling to get the data from Q's attack. Estelle and Sven were also watching the candidates. “Strength registers as high A. Same goes for speed,” one of the analysts responded. “Other parameters are normal so far.” Regular breakers can take down training dummies with ease. Even Zeke Arnold took down the level one training dummy in one hit. But that was using one of the training weapons. Plus, Zeke is a melee fighter. Q is a mage. A summoner, at that. That's why it was more surprising that he took down the training dummy in such fashion. “That was reckless,” Q told himsel
The first phase of the assessment finished for all three groups. They were given time to rest before the next phase. In the meantime, they were provided meals during the short break. The candidates were recuperating during this time. Meanwhile, the assessment team compiled their data on promising candidates for this batch. “For the non-combat group, we have a promising candidate,” said one of the staff officers. “Caitlin Aoife. Mid Tier Class: Priestess. Her parameters are decent with high focus on VIT and INT. She is a bit reckless but she has a good sense of her surroundings.” There were also evaluations for other candidates from that group. Caitlin stood out because of her ability to make quick decisions. “About the general group, we have a title holder without a
The last part of the assessment had the groups gather into a single large hall. They were lectured on the other basics of being a breaker. They were taught basic skills of a breaker. Inventory skills, especially, are very useful. The orientation also included the responsibilities, privileges, and the prospects of recruitment. It had the purpose of motivating new breakers to strive to get stronger. While it was happening, the assessment team was swamped with analysis tasks. It wouldn't be this busy usually. But a certain individual has been adding workload to the assessment team over and over. Even now, they are examining the relic from the level zero field. “The results show that it's a replica-type,” one of the analysts said. “There's nothing abnormal about it. At first glance, that is.” “At first glance? What d
The realm of the gods differed barely from the human world. The sole difference being its inhabitants. Instead of continents, there are pantheons. Gods and goddesses are able to mingle with each other. So it was not difficult for other deities to visit another's realm. At this moment, a beautiful goddess entered the temple of another. She had long flowing hair and a fair complexion. Her oriental attire accented her curves. Behind her, a glowing insignia hovered. If a human were to lay eyes on her, they would immediately feel the warmth of the sun. Her mere presence would urge one to bow and kneel. “How distasteful,” she said as she gazed at the pillars. Her voice sounded motherly yet cold at the same time. There were various chains wrapped around the pillars. They all led to the center where a maiden lay on a stone platform. Her beauty was on par with the god
A goblin fell to the ground as it was cut in half. Its blood was blue, but it didn't lessen the feeling of killing another creature. It was almost as tall as a human and had similar features. It had green skin and large eyes. Its teeth and claws were sharp. Other than those features, it was almost human. “How are the newbies?” Sven asked as he shot another goblin in the head. His weapon was a silver revolver. He didn't need to reload but he had to pull back the hammer for every shot. Its bullets materialized from his magical energy. “As expected,” Sera responded as she cleaned her blade of blood. It was a beautiful long sword. Its blade was a red color and had grooves. Those grooves were able to extend her reach like a whip's. The hilt and the guard were both trimmed in black. The teams were split into two. The n
“There's no end to them!” Sven shouted as he kept shooting monster after monster. He didn't need to wipe them out. He only needed to buy time until team Alpha was able to retreat. Thankfully, the other staff officers arrived and made things easier. Given their situation, he couldn't complain. Sera ended up with the shorter end of the stick. She was keeping the blue oni at bay. But it was still a daunting opponent. It was one that would be classified as a raid boss. A party of veteran breakers would be able to take it down. But all she needed to do was buy as much time as possible. The blue oni roared and Sera was immobilized for a moment. It swung its large fist down on her. Quick on her feet, she leaped back and swung her blade. The blade extended like a whip and pierced its eye. “Sera! Time to retreat!” Sven sh
The gods called for a convention once more. As it was expected…“I heard you've taken a liking to a human.” A voice came from behind her.“Apollo.”“Astraea.”The two exchanged simple greetings that way. The two continued to walk to the gathering hall.“For one who loved humanity so much, it took you long enough, huh?” He teased her.“I don't want to hear that from you. Did you have your ‘beloved’ peek into my affairs?” She scoffed.Apollo's nose scrunched up a bit.“My oracle's sight is more powerful than
“Congratulations,” Q, the Void Contract, greeted as he manifested in a goddess' domain. He was greeted by a smug-looking Astraea. She was incredibly proud of herself with how things went. It was a small chance that it would succeed and it paid off.“Did you really have that little faith in gods and humanity?” She asked.“Who wouldn't? When you've seen what I've seen, you'd be very cynical.” He shrugged.“I can only imagine,” she sighed. She sat on the edge of the bed and brushed her hair back.Q turned into mist and reformed beside her. He leaned back and closed his eyes.“That was very clever, though,” he praised her.
The meeting had taken a mental toll on Estelle. It was mostly due to the insistence of the Directors in recruiting Q to the association. It was understandable. They were that adamant during Sena Mckenna's generation as well. Even Commander Zacharias would want to have Q on his side. But he would trust Estelle's judgment over the council members on this one. Estelle was like a daughter to him. He worried if she would end up treading the same path as the council members. The association can put up an altruistic front. But it was inevitable to want to recruit breakers with great potential. The change that Q brought about in Estelle was something he definitely appreciated. “You—Director.” She did not hide her displeasure when she encountered the recruitment director. “Se
In a private room, several people gathered. Multitudes of barriers have been placed to prevent any information from leaking out. The council, the head directors of each department, gathered. They were to receive the report on the recent incident. This was but one of the branches of the International Breakers Association. The higher ups from other parts of the world communicated through monitors. It was a secure network and had the strictest of defenses. “The most recent incident endangered several newbie breakers,” Estelle reported. “There are no casualties, at least not on our side.” “Elaborate, Miss Estelle,” one of the council members requested. “We found the bodies of association employees. But we found traces of ritual summoning that led to the descent of Shuten
The giant cleaver was crashing down and everyone braced for the end. Eyes closed. Arms over their head as if it would make a difference. There was a loud crashing sound. Then there was silence. They all waited, with bated breath, for the end to come. But it did not. “I refuse.” Q's voice could be heard by everyone. They opened their eyes to see a lone man standing tall. His blade stopped the giant weapon in its tracks. His right hand gripped the hilt of [Kotetsu] tightly. His left pressed against the blunt side of his blade. “I refuse to let this—my story end. Not like this!” He reiterated. “So stop cowering! Let's show this damn trial what humans are made of!” He placed strength in his arms and pushed back the giant mass. It was at this point that Shuten-douji
“Interesting,” Q muttered to himself. “Humans really are fascinating.” He looked around. He was certain that everyone here could feel it. This was no ordinary raid boss. Shuten-douji's aura was overwhelming. Despite that, these people intended to fight—to survive. For the newbies, it was understandable if they fell into despair. Some already have. But most refused to give in. Even though his voice was barely audible, Estelle heard it loud and clear. After all, they were in her territory. Some of the newbies wanted to know how they could help. For now, they were asked to stay put. No one knew about Shuten-douji's abilities yet. The commander couldn't use his undead minions. Minions and monsters tend to be creatures of magical energy. Shuten-douji was using them to absorb as much energy as possible. Because of this
