Darius woke up the next morning dreading getting out of bed. He rubbed his tired, almond eyes and rolled over to hit the snooze button. As he turned back over he was startled by a loud banging on the door. It was time…

He jumped out of bed as fast as he could and threw on the clothes from the floor. The banging continued for the next five minutes until he got to the door, he thought as though it would never stop.

‘Maybe he gave up and left?’ He thought to himself as he glanced through the peep hole. A tall man stood waiting. His crisp blond hair gave away quickly that it was Haans who was waiting.

‘He must have sensed me.’ He said to himself as he watched Haans impatiently sway side to side.

“I know you’re there Darius. Quit stalling.” He said calmly.

Darius opened the door hesitantly and let him in.

Haans feverishly paced the floor in front of Darius in what seemed like an eternity as he described the conditions before signing the contract. He had only agreed to take on the assignme

It was a cool, breezy and stormy night. Rain came down in sheets, as a dark figure stood before a house. The house was pretty ordinary, white with blue shutters; it didn't have more than two bedrooms. It looked like a cozy little family home with flowers and shrubs lining the front lawn, and then the smell from the pellet stove smoke invaded his nostrils. He took a deep breath and pulled out an old, rusted compass from his black trench coat. It looked like it could have been from the 14th century, the small, brass disc was dented and the Victorian designs were faded. He studied it as it pointed east, towards the small house. He looked the house over carefully, looking for the best entrance, before proceeding towards the side to gaze into the window. Inside you can see the small kitchen; the brand new, all black appliances off set the linoleum floor. Cabinets filled almost every wall of the small space that made it look more crowded than it should have been. The kitchen opened to a la

  • Vexed   Chapter 1

Hmm… It's chilly out this morning, and a little bit on the cloudy side. The smell of the dying leaves is very calming, I guess you could say. Maybe it's just me, but I love everything about autumn. The changing weather, pumpkin pie, the leaves falling to the ground, pumpkin coffee, Halloween approaching, pumpkin cookies, Thanksgiving and did I mention pumpkin pie? I guess this is where I would introduce myself. My name is Sophie Fredrickson; I am a widowed mother of one. My son's name is Liam; he recently turned eleven this past September. He’s kind of tall for his age, reaching four-foot-seven, with blond hair and my blue eyes. I tell him every day he looks like his father as he responds blushing with an ‘I doubt it’. We tragically lost my husband and his father, Julian, about a year and a half ago. It's still very strange without him here. Having no one to wake up to in the morning or help Liam with his sports is kind of tough. Not to mention I can’t stop thinking about him. If I c

  • Vexed   Chapter 2

Sylvester is six-foot-five and is very skinny. His square face is bristly and mostly sunken in. His cheek bones pop out from the rest of his face and his bushy white eyebrows make it hard to see his brown eyes. Needless to say the smoothest and only hairless part of him is the top of his head. His skeletal structure makes you wonder when the last time it was that he had anything to eat. Despite his ghastly appearance, he is one of the sweetest guys you’ll ever meet. Through everything that has happened, these are the people who have been there for me the most. They have also respected my privacy, and let me be alone when I needed to. I haven’t been the same since… that night. It's really hard to talk about what happened to my husband, but it is a crucial part of my story and how I became who I am. It was late at night and Liam was spending it at a friend’s house for a slumber party with the soccer team. The storm had just set in and the cold made us turn on the pellet stove. I didn't

  • Vexed   Chapter 3

I've contemplated ending my own life several times, but the fact that the vampire didn't get Liam; my constant urge to protect my son has kept me from doing so for now. If he dies, I will die. It’s just that simple; I don’t see the point in living if I have nothing to live for. After all of the funeral arrangements and all was said and done, I tore down the house and rebuilt a similar looking one in place of the old. Through all of my guilt I can't help but know that Julian had invited him in at some point without my knowledge; and I can only hope he caught a glimpse of him before his demise. If I can get together what I need for a séance I can talk to him one last time and find out what exactly happened that night that I couldn’t see myself, that I couldn’t prevent. Now that I got that out of my system there are a few things you should know about me personally. I've knowingly been a witch since I was twelve. Starting out is a grueling process because all witches are weak at first. T

  • Vexed   Chapter 4

I’m not sure on the complete context of vampires, I haven’t been one long enough to find out how the rest of them live their lives. All I can say is that things are pretty quiet in my neck of the woods, no pun intended. I honestly haven’t met another vampire here, nor have I run into the one who’s changed me. I’m guessing I’ll meet whoever this mystery vampire is, but I have a feeling it’s not anytime soon. Before I changed, there were very seldom attacks on my family. We live in such a remote place that anything supernatural is just so few and far between. That’s why I like it here, the less commotion, and the better. I guess one could say I was a witch in hiding. When a supernatural being stumbled upon me, they were given an ultimatum, leave town or be exterminated. Some were rather difficult and chose the more destructive paths, while others just let me be. It really depended on whether or not the creature felt they could take me in battle. The ones who stayed to fight usually lost

  • Vexed   Chapter 5

I try to go by day to day in light spirits. Liam does well in school and doesn’t get into trouble, so it’s easy to be proud of him. I haven't been very social lately; I’m still haunted daily about what happened that night. Fortunately, there are a few good friends who understand and give me my distance. It’s easy to keep up appearances with Clara because she’s always ready to do something. She’s also more than happy to take Liam in for the night so the boys can hang out and play pool in the basement, which is a major relief on hunting days. So much of me just up and disappeared all at once it's a little overwhelming; but smile I put on my game face and try my hardest to prevent anyone from finding out my secrets. I looked over at the clock, it was six; time to get up and make breakfast. I lazily pulled myself out of bed and threw on a pair of jeans and a hooded sweatshirt before going down stairs to make breakfast. I could hear Liam just waking up in the other room. "Morning Mom," h

  • Vexed   Chapter 6

With Liam in school it's time to start my day. It didn’t take me long to decide to take a bike ride down Main St., pick up a paper at the store and grab myself a coffee at the local coffee shop; maybe even a peanut stick, and read today's current events. Lately, it's been one disaster after another with kids committing suicide, oil spills, politicians trying to tell the world who they can and can’t fall in love with then denying you your constitutional rights if you don’t follow the ‘norm’ and other natural disasters. Today there are miners trapped in a Chilean mine, they rescued two but have yet to pull them all out. Things like this make me want to try and make the world better after Liam grows up and no longer needs me. I'll try a spell to help rescuers bring the miners to safety. As for everything else, it's out of my hands. One thing I can't do as a witch is disrupt nature's way of doing things. Sadly these things must happen or it will disrupt the universe and the results will

  • Vexed   Chapter 7

I came back to reality with the old man in front of me smiling as sweetly as an old man can smile. His dentures were coffee stained and he smelled like he hasn’t showered in days. "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't see you." the man said before he winked at me. I paused for a minute, trying to search for the words I would say to him without giving myself away. "No, it's my fault," I replied coolly, "I'm a tad on the clumsy side." I smiled at him as innocently as possible. He seemed to have bought my act as he moved to make the conversation last longer. "That's alright;" he answered slyly, "we all are at some point." He smiled at me again laying his hand upon my shoulder. We both chuckled and went our separate ways. I left the coffee place in the opposite direction as he had and got on my bike and started to head home. I didn’t know if I should be frightened at the strange couple’s presence or to completely disregard our meeting. They weren’t threatening me or Liam in anyway, but I still felt

  • Vexed   Chapter 38

Months have gone by without a hitch. After sending Liam to live with my father while I sort through this mess I’ve been bouncing from city to city in search for clues. Afraid to get to close to anyone I’ve kept a low profile. There hasn’t been any activity from the supernatural throughout the entire northeastern coastline, so I set my sights to the south where an unexplained string of phenomena have been recently occurring. It’s too much of a coincidence for two or three tragedies to strike off the coast of North Myrtle Beach. However, eight tragedies in total have cursed a 200 mile radius of the city. From unexpected fires to pile ups on I95. Normal people would see this as a string of unfortunate luck for the area but I feel this has a more sinister cause…The crisp wind blew through the palm trees with the faint smell of the ocean sifting through the window.Darius had just sat down for his morning cup of coffee as he fumbled through his paperwork for the day. His brows furrowed as

  • Vexed   Chapter 37

Pulling back the sleeping bag the mysterious occupant began to cough violently and thrash about. In an instant David leapt from the cloth as though it had been on fire. His torn clothes revealed the scars from his torturous ordeal so I quickly jumped to my feet and rushed him into the house.Though I had only been gone for a few days, the house felt as if it were abandoned for years. The musty scent of Liam’s last dinner had wafted through the kitchen reminding me of his holiday with friends. A soft light was all that shown through the blinds which gave way to the thin lair of dust on the television. Walking through the house for the first time since the ordeal felt like our bodies were stuck in slow motion. After I checked all the rooms and got a drink from the refrigerator, we retired to the couch.Once our bodies hit, dust flew into the air bringing us back to the reality at hand. This made the silence more deafening.David and I haven’t spoken a word since walking through the doo

  • Vexed   Chapter 36

I reminisced about the time I spent with David, Sylvia and Tony. We bonded so much in so little time it felt like they’ve been a part of my life for years. And to just lose them in a few short days was heart wrenching. I couldn’t bear the thought of them being gone. My eyes welled up with tears again and I didn’t care to hold them back. I sat on the ground and pulled my knees up to my chest. I started crying, it seemed like the only thing I could do at this point. I had to hide my secrets from everyone else. At least it was nice to be able to share things with someone. And now that someone was gone. I buried my head between my knees as I cried harder. My tears dripped down my nose, soaking me in the process. After a few hours, the fire died down low enough to walk through. My face hurt from all the crying I had done and my vision was a little blurred but I continued to try and find my way out of the cave anyway. It took me a very long time, and I got lost on several occasions along

  • Vexed   Chapter 35

I broke my legs free and hopped up to my feet on the table. Looking around me I was completely out numbered. Dimietry came up from behind me and tried to restrain me but I fought him off and threw him off my back onto the cavern floor. Jumping on top of him, I grabbed another finger nail and ripped it off, forcing him to scream out in pain. The other changelings moved to help their leader but he motioned for them to stay where they were. Dimietry grabbed my leg and pulled me off balance sending me crashing down next to him. He climbed on top of me and tried to pin me down but I was too swift for him and escaped out from between his legs. By the time he turned around I was in the standing position and ready to fight. He turned himself into a tiger before leaping towards me again. Suddenly I felt a strong surge of power rising inside of me and before I knew it the leaping tiger was caged up in front of me. The tiger growled before turning into a snake and escaping the cage. Next thing

  • Vexed   Chapter 34

I lied there, coughing for a few moments as he waited out in pain. I didn’t know these things were anatomically correct or I would have thought of that earlier! I thought to myself grinning. He slowly got up off the ground and stood up. He stared me down for a minute as I contemplated my next move. He leapt at me and I jumped out of the way again. He gave me a look and then transformed back to the Russian. “This is getting a little bit tedious, darling, how about we skip the fighting part and you either just join me or let me kill you.” He said arrogantly as he walked towards me holding out his hand. “Now why would I join your band of idiots to fight in a war that has nothing to do with me or the good of humanity for that matter? Then again you all are demons, and really this seems more and more like a fight to see who’s got the bigger package, and trust me I’ve already seen these kind of fights. They don’t end well for the one who forces.” He gave me one of those looks where you kno

  • Vexed   Chapter 33

I fell to my knees in defeat and just stared over at the wall where Sylvia and Tony were chained. Tears began to well up in my eyes and I tried to hold them back. My breathing slowed down with my heart beat to the point where they could have stopped so easily. I couldn’t believe it; he just ended their lives like that. They couldn’t even fight back! How was that fair? Chain someone up and then torture them like that for no reason other than they were helping me? I looked over to Dimietry cross, how could he do this? Why would he kill people to make me help him? Seriously, what makes someone like him think that I would just willingly join forces with him after he killed my friends? All of these questions raced through my mind as I grew angry. I felt the anger rise in me with every breath I took. My body seemed to heat up as blood rushed through my veins. My heart started pounding again as the adrenaline kicked in. Suddenly, I found myself looking at my restraints. I clenched my fist,

  • Vexed   Chapter 32

Dimietry grabbed Tony’s head again and lifted him up to a standing position. He glanced over to me and smiled before ripping off one of Tony’s legs. I screamed out at him trying to break free and fight him. Every piece of wire I snapped was replaced by a new one by the changelings watching me. “You see what happens when we make bad decisions, Sophie?” he said before snapping off another leg. Tony cried out in pain. “Noooo! Leave him alone!” I screamed tears running down my face as I tried un-relentlessly to get out of my restraints not even realizing that they were cutting into my flesh once again. “I keep telling you, Sophie,” he continued. “You could have prevented this. All you had to do, was join me the first time I asked.” He paused for a moment and ripped off Tony’s tail. I screamed again unable to control the tears running down my face. Dimietry looked over at me and winced. He saw the pain it was causing me and smiled before continuing on. “Oh, come on Sophie! If you cared f

  • Vexed   Chapter 31

I started looking around the room; it looked similar to where David was being tortured. The walls were covered in lime stone and there was a small, black coal grill in the middle of the floor that was lit. The flames danced off the grill almost as if they were able to just get up and walk out on their own. Along the wall, there were more restraints. From silver chains, to barbed wire all along the wall as if Dimietry had made his own torture chamber. Over in the corner there was a bed with large spikes coming out of it, then off on the other side was a bear trap. Closer to me there was a table covered with all kinds of weapons. Rusty old swords and knives rested on the table next to a club and a hammer. A scalpel lay next to a pair of hair cutting scissors and a bayonet. My heart started pounding again as I heard noises of someone talking to someone else coming from outside the room. I couldn’t understand what they were saying but I had a feeling it wasn’t good for the three of us in
