Almost the moment she got out of bed, the door was pushed open.

A crowd of people rushed in.

Besides Annie and Wendy, there was Lucy, the butler, and even a few men among the group.

Annie was at the forefront, her eyes scanning every inch of the room.

Renee looked at the butler with displeasure. "What are you doing? Is this how your estate treats guests? What if I hadn't been dressed?"

The butler hesitated, instinctively glancing at Annie. She was Carl's fiancée; he didn't dare offend her when she insisted on opening the door.

The butler's eyes shifted, deflecting responsibility. "Miss Lacey, I sincerely apologize. Miss Simmons said you weren't responding to her. She was worried something had happened to you, so she asked me to open the door."

Renee glanced at the time. "It's just past seven. What else would I be doing besides sleeping if I didn't respond? Even if you were worried, couldn't you have called?"
