KATERINA

Just as I reached the next set of lockers, I froze, almost as though on instinct. My spine tingled the way it always did around unfamiliar vampires, and the scent of vampire invaded my nose, but this time ... there was something strange about it. Mixed with the sharp, pungent vampire scent was something unmistakably pleasant, almost resembling honey as well as spicy perfume. Slowly, I turned toward the lockers, totally unprepared for what stood in front me- or should I say who stood in front of me. The strangely pleasant-smelling vampire seemed to be observing me carefully as he peeked through his long, dark lashes and leaned against one of the lockers. He had a perfectly placed smug smile upon his face, and for a moment, I found myself carefully analysing him. He had a head of voluptuous and silky blond hair which was long enough to peak from the bottom of his left ear as he had tucked a few strands behind it. The rest of his hair hung in his face, long enough to end along the sharp edge of his well-defined jaw. His hairstyle framed his face perfectly giving him a classic hot bad boy look. His eyes were a light hazel colour framed by a pair of perfectly shaped, thick, black eyebrows. He seemed to be surprised to see me though, as his brows were slightly raised, and his eyes were expressively wide. Soon, he began to shift and pushed his perfectly sculpted body from the locker. A sort of panic began to rise in me, allowing a burning feeling to pulse through my chest. I had been openly staring at this stranger for more than was socially acceptable.

So, I looked down, fighting off an embarrassed look itching to make its way onto my face and then looked up, forcing my face into an expressionless expression.

"You must be a new vampire in town," I said, thanking my body for not betraying me by making me sound flustered.

He smiled and folded his arms. By now he was so close to me I could make out the tiny, almost indiscernible freckles which speckled his nose making his appearance even more appealing.

" Yes, tiny little Hunter," He said with a smooth, husky voice and a raised eyebrow, "what might your name be?"

I hesitated before answering, totally stunned for a second.

" Katerina Drackon," I said impulsively. This was the second time this week... Second time!

His eyes were wide open and for a second, he shook his head, huffed, and then gave me a questioning look.

"You mean to say that you are the daughter of Christine and Leroy Drackon, one of the ten leaders of the Huntership?" He asked.

I nodded slowly. I thought that everyone knew that. My parents were not that big on hiding the fact that they had children- especially when it came to making our family seem better than others, and that included vampire families. This vampire must have been living under a rock or something.

" That's weird, I didn't think they had a child. They don’t look like people who could conceive anything other insults and stern looks.”

Insulting much. At least he knew who my parents were, and if I were not living proof, I would also have found it hard to believe they could conceive anything other than what he had said.

“Excuse me, they did conceive children. In fact, you’re looking at the next leader of the Huntership.” I said, trying to act all high and mighty. Inside, however I regretted saying what I said right after it had left my mouth.

" An Elder, wow. Don't the elders rule the huntership, and aren't they really old," he asked. Clearly, he did know a thing or two about the Huntership.

“Well, I am going to become the youngest one in history, okay!” I had no reason to be offended, but I couldn’t help it. The way he looked so smug just had me irritated.

He then smiled and said, “Then maybe I should strive to become the leader of the vampire council. That way I’d be able to see you in the future too.”

Did he just flirt with me? I was about to say something, when he beat me to it.

" Well are you going to ask what my name is?"

I couldn't help but smirk. For some other reason I felt comfortable around him. Maybe it was that smirk, or the fact that this conversation hadn’t been as painfully bland as the ones I had had with others of his kind.

" What is your name?"

His smile grew even larger. My creep radar was going off.

" My name is Haydon Veneziano," he spoke confidently, and his smirk twisted into an evil smile and his eyes grew dark.

It was as though the person standing in front of me had totally devoured the cool, calm teenage vampire I had been talking to just a moment ago. I froze as I remembered his name- Haydon Veneziano. It was a name no hunter could ever possibly forget as it belonged to one of the most feared vampires to have existed. He was the son of a very rich, very powerful vampire- commonly known to vampires as the Vampire King- and even though they were not actual royalty, Haydon often acted with an attitude only someone with the opinion that the world belonged to them, would. He was ruthless, taking everything he wanted- including countless lives. In the hunter world, we called him Haydon the slaughter since that seemed to be the only thing he knew how to do. One would think he would’ve been killed by my council already, but he and his father were sneaky, shrude people. Everytime we thought we had them right where we wanted them. They would prove us wrong.

It was for these specific reasons that I could not possibly believe that such a beautiful face could belong to someone as awful as that.

I looked at him again, his curious eyes were studying me, trying to decipher my reaction. And so, I took in a deep breathe and put on my best fake smirk, now adamant that I had to pull myself together. Now adamant that I was Katerina Drackon and he was Haydon Veneziano and that our names would make no difference. The only thing that truly mattered was that he and I were vampire and hunter, totally different. Besides, I hated vampires- especially cocky, self-centred narcissists. This meeting was just one big mistake. It must have been.

HAYDONKaterina stood in front of me, her face still one of confusion. Being told that I was Haydon must have really confused and upset her because within a few seconds, she turned around and wordlessly began to walk away. But I couldn’t let her leave, at least, not so soon.“Katerina!” I yelled out by accident. She froze but did not turn back. Panic began to rise in me as I realised that I had no clue what to say. Soon, however, I realised that it would have been better to just keep quiet because the next words out of my mouth were:“I hope you had fun beating up my cousin.”It was not so much the words that were the problem, but rather they way I said them. They had unintentionally come out hostile and venomous.Katerina never turned back, not even an inch. She did, however clench and unclench her fists and began stomping out, mumbling a very colourful assortment of profanities. It was then that I realised that

KATERINAI sat on my bed finishing the last of my homework. Today had been extremely long, especially since I met Haydon Veneziano. Now don’t get me wrong, I did not like the poor soul, on the contrary, there was a high chance that I absolutely hated his guts. However, there was a large part of me that actually thought: maybe this guy isn’t what all the rumours paint him out to be.He was well behaved- most of the time, and most importantly, he did not try to assault anyone thus far. Now, I wouldn’t say that meant he was in my good books, but it did make my hate for him recede slightly. Only slightly though. Then, there was the matter of his appearance. As much as I wanted to deny that Haydon was absolutely attractive, I had to admit that he was nothing short of a walking male model, oozing absolute beauty from head to toe. Again, it did not make me like him, but made me hate him just a little less.Suddenl

HAYDONI stopped and looked at her. Her hair shone a lighter brown in the sunlight and her eyes became orbs of shimmering gold. She carefully placed her hand on her hip and pursed her lips. She looked as though she were analysing me and for a while, and her eyes proceeded to gaze at my skin." Seems like vampires are getting more immune to the sunlight?" it came out more like a question as she then stopped her analysis and returned her eyes to mine where they stayed fixed into a deep glare.I smiled at her, it seemed as though her mother was really sheltering her from the supernatural world. Almost all vampire hunters knew of our newfound vampire tricks." Tablets, injections, potions and even witch's spells can fix that problem.” I then stopped and proceeded to tease her. “Looks like mommy and daddy are keeping their little girl all innocent and away from the world of drugs”She seemed offended and

KATERINAI sat in the bathtub, which was filled to the brim with warm, aromatic, water which emitted puffs of steam and fogged up the room. I was still unable to fully comprehend Haydon Veneziano and his outrageous threat. Who did he think he was? Who did he think I was? Clearly Haydon had been born into this world a privileged twit, believing he was the end all and be all. As if I actually wanted to hang around him like a little puppy. Of course I was not going to get involved with him. This, however was not what bothered me. I had picked up on the words “I don’t want you getting close to me” almost immediately, but had chosen to ignore them, because acknowledging them would have been too awkward for us both. Was Haydon afraid that I would develop feelings if I hung around him too often? Maybe such a thing had happened with other hunters or girls he had met in the past, but I knew I was certainly not one for developing a feelings for so

HAYDONThe slight feeling of wooziness was slowly creeping over me as I downed my forty eighth beer- no that was no understatement. I was sitting in an abandoned warehouse with three other teenagers I had met at the liquor store. I recognised them from school, and they invited me to hang out with them. Admittedly, I did use compulsion and hypnotism to get them to invite me with them since I needed some...distraction and saw this as a perfect opportunity for some small-scale mischief. Also, I had been the one who had been able to purchase the liquor because of said compulsion so it was a given that they would invite me along. The three teenagers fell into the stereotypical “bad boy” category which suited me quite perfectly. The leader was a tall, lank boy named Dean who had messy black hair and the brightest blue eyes I had ever seen. He offere

KATERINAI was walking peacefully down the street, just minding my own business when his scent caught me off guard. Why did the universe hate me?"Katerina," Haydon sang as he walked closer and closer toward me. I tightened my fingers into a fist and kept on walking, pretending not to be fazed by him, but inside I was a whirlwind of fear, irritation, and hot rage. "Oh, Kitty Cat, don't be like that, come on talk to me!" he whined. He was now standing right next to me. His scent was lingering in the air. I sniffed it and sighed softly. Then I focused back on being angry with him.

KATERINAAfter about an hour or so, the school bell rang, signalling the end of gym period. So, I quickly got into the shower and got dressed. Honestly, I did not know what the point was of having PE so early in the morning. Now we were going to be sweaty and smelly the rest of the day. Once I had finished tying my shoelaces, I grabbed my things, packed them away and ran to my next class-mathematics- which I was running late for, again. After mathematics I went to science and the English and then lunch. I walked toward the table where my friends were seated with a tray of macaroni, Greek salad and a box of lukewarm apple juice in my hands. I sat down and looked around for Haydon, almost instinctively and found him further away, at a table crowded wit

Today just seemed to get more and more interesting!"Dating. Haydon and Evangeline are dating," my brother said for about the fifteen hundredth time. The more I heard it, the more shocked I got, the angrier I became. I gaped at him in disbelief and slowly felt the rage bubble up in the darkest, deepest parts of my belly. I could not, however, understand why I was so angry though. What could the reason possibly be?"Since when?" I screamed out louder than I should've.

KATERINAThe waiting room was crowded, filled with the presence of my friends and family as we all waited patiently for my brother’s results. Haydon was sitting next to me, clutching my shaking hand while my father had my mother in a tight embrace. Today was the worst day of our lives, but it was also the best. Today we had finally changed history, and it was all thanks to my mother. She was eleven steps ahead of Death, who was only ten steps away from us. She truly was the greatest hunter to have ever lived. After a few hours, the nurse had come out and told us that Dylan was going to be fine. Jasmine, who had been crying with Lucy and Nathan cried even harder. Things were going to be okay, we were all going to be okay. Haydon smiled at me, and I smiled back.“Thank you, for trying to save me.” He said.

KATERINA“Why mom, why!” I cried out, holding the silver box which had now regained its shape, and contained my mother who had, just moments ago began to fake into dust particles and enter into the box. Elizabeth was no longer a threat, and Haydon and I were free. It was all thanks to my mother’s sacrifice. By now the Veneziano’s were awake with tears streaming down their faces. Death was still in the centre of the pentagram, clutching the silver box, which we now had discovered, was a mere replica. He opened it, looked inside, and threw it on the floor. He then stormed up to where we were hovering over the box and took it from me. He tried to throw it on the floor, but Haydon grabbed his hands before he could. Death looked up at him and snarled which made Haydon whimper. He was still treating Haydon like the abusive man he always was, but I couldn&

KATERINAThe air in the house was cold and tense. The rooms were dark, and the home I had once felt comfortable in, was now uncomfortable and dreary. “Death?” my mother called out. She was standing in front, holding a gun in her hand which she had kept in the boot of her car. It was more a sort of anchor than anything else. Hunter weapons did not work on a vampire as rare as Death. The halls were silent, save for the clicking of our careful steps and heavy breathing. Mr and Mrs Veneziano seemed to know what they were doing, so did my parents. All we needed to do, was make sure we did exactly as we were told. Of course Haydon and I were not known for such things, and secretly, Haydon had decided to think up his own plan, and I did the same, neither one of us uttering our plan to one another or to our parents. KATERINAWe had gotten on the first available flight, rushed, panicked and panting. The phone call my mother had received was one fatal call, the call from Death. Apparently, my parents had not been secretive enough, and he had caught on to their plan. He was, at the moment, holding my brother, along with Jeremy and the boys hostage. Tonight, was the night he was convinced that he would achieve his goal. He knew that he had power over us, and we could bend to his will. The flight was once again, long and uncomfortable and distress was evident on Haydon’s parent’s faces as well as my own.“I just don’t understand how he figured out that we knew. KATERINAWe sat in the lounge beside a fire. It had gotten colder now, so much so, that I found my self near Haydon, clinging to him for dear life while receiving some serious glances from my mother. Haydon’s parents were clearly way more accepting of our relationship than mine were at this point.“So, let me start,” Mr Veneziano said. “It all began the day Death resurrected Haydon. For something needing so much of power, there are always serious consequences. The first, was the death of his wife, Elisabeth.” He then paused, clearing his throat, and the continued. “The second, and most dangerous consequence, was a prophecy. It was a prophecy fortold by the oracle, Cecilia. The day Haydon was resurrected, she rushed here and immediately told us what she has foreseen. The beautiful mahogany table was decorated with a white silk cloth which had intricate blue petals embroidered in. The table was filled with many different types of food which was odd, since Haydon and his parents did not eat any food, instead, they sat with wine glasses filled with blood on the table. It had been exactly five minutes of the four of us staring at each other awkwardly, when finally, Haydon broke the silence. “Is there a reason that we are waiting and staring at each other?”Mr Haydon spoke, never lifting his eyes from me, “Yes, we are waiting for a few guests. They should be here, right about-“Knock. Knock. Knock.

KATERINAWe arrived in Italy after a long, uncomfortable flight. I hadn’t been able to sleep at all as I though about what Haydon’s father’s reaction would be to me and began to mentally prepare myself for rejection. Italy was quite beautiful this time of the year, and the weather was warm enough to allow me to remove my thick jacket soon after we arrived at the airport. After we had gathered our luggage, Haydon rented us a car and we began driving. In all honesty, I paid less attention to the road, people and homes which passed us, and more attention to my shaking hands.“Katerina, calm down please. You have nothing to fear, I will be beside you the entire time, okay?”His words, meant to be reassuring, did nothing to get me to calm down. If
