KATERINA

The air in the house was cold and tense. The rooms were dark, and the home I had once felt comfortable in, was now uncomfortable and dreary.

“Death?” my mother called out. She was standing in front, holding a gun in her hand which she had kept in the boot of her car. It was more a sort of anchor than anything else. Hunter weapons did not work on a vampire as rare as Death.

The halls were silent, save for the clicking of our careful steps and heavy breathing. Mr and Mrs Veneziano seemed to know what they were doing, so did my parents. All we needed to do, was make sure we did exactly as we were told. Of course Haydon and I were not known for such things, and secretly, Haydon had decided to think up his own plan, and I did the same, neither one of us uttering our plan to one another or to our parents. • Vampires and Vampire Hunters   1: I might have accidentally almost killed the neighbour

KATERINA I stood in the centre of the forest, surrounded by the sweet scent of fresh blossoms that littered the trees and the ground. The scent grew stronger with each step I took, as I crushed the petals on the underneath of my shoes spreading the nectar in between the grooves. I was just a few minutes away from my home, yet the journey ahead seemed endless.I soon heard the rustle of leaves in the near distance. My ears honed in on the seemingly innocent sound... and then I smelt the scent of it. The vampire who had been stalking me the entire walk home, completely unaware that I was aware of it. I had been visiting a friend when he first caught my attention. His red eyes watched me intently from afar. He was stalking me, mentally marking me as his prey. To him, I was possibly a challenge, a sport. The unsuspecting teenage hunter roaming around unprotected. But I wasn’t, and I was about to prove it.I reached behind me and pulled an a

  • Vampires and Vampire Hunters   2: Obsessed

HAYDONThere was a strange pull I felt as my bike passed a large, metallic gate which gleamed slightly in the moonlight. It was the same pull I had been feeling for the past week, and it was the same pull that was driving me crazy and led to me being sent here in the first place. I broke suddenly and got off of my bike, my feet carrying me closer towards the intimidating mansion. At first I thought about ripping the gate from it’s hinges and then walking in. I then, however, inspecting the home more closely and realised that I recognised the gate and the mansion. How could I not, in such a dull and dreary neighbourhood. It all belonged to the famous Drackon family- One of the most influential families in the supernatural world. They were a family I would prefer not to wake up, especially since I was already not in their good books… especially since they were hunters and I was a vampire.Suddenly, a sweet, delicious scent wafted into my nose.

  • Vampires and Vampire Hunters   3: Anticipation

KATERINAThe next day I found myself looking forward to the day ahead as I began my journey to school on foot. One of the main reasons I was happy was because I was going to school and would be away from my still very enraged , crazy mother. Let’s just say she was not prepared to forgive me anytime soon and I could say goodbye to staying out late, which I feared would soon become a major problem. The walk to school had seemed weirdly long though, as if I were walking for miles without end. As if each step were futile. Not only that, but I had developed a strange feeling. It was a feeling resembling anticipation, as though I were expecting something great and wonderful to happen. I usually only felt this way when test results were expected at school, but we hadn’t written any tests recently. Eventually, I decided to ignore the tugging feeling. In a few short long minutes, I began to see the tall, brick building covered in thick vines of ivy, ap

  • Vampires and Vampire Hunters   4: Haydon, the new boy

KATERINAJust as I reached the next set of lockers, I froze, almost as though on instinct. My spine tingled the way it always did around unfamiliar vampires, and the scent of vampire invaded my nose, but this time ... there was something strange about it. Mixed with the sharp, pungent vampire scent was something unmistakably pleasant, almost resembling honey as well as spicy perfume. Slowly, I turned toward the lockers, totally unprepared for what stood in front me- or should I say who stood in front of me. The strangely pleasant-smelling vampire seemed to be observing me carefully as he peeked through his long, dark lashes and leaned against one of the lockers. He had a perfectly placed smug smile upon his face, and for a moment, I found myself carefully analysing him. He had a head of voluptuous and silky blond hair which was long enough to peak from the bottom of his left ear as he had tucked a few strands behind it. The rest of his hair hung in

HAYDONKaterina stood in front of me, her face still one of confusion. Being told that I was Haydon must have really confused and upset her because within a few seconds, she turned around and wordlessly began to walk away. But I couldn’t let her leave, at least, not so soon.“Katerina!” I yelled out by accident. She froze but did not turn back. Panic began to rise in me as I realised that I had no clue what to say. Soon, however, I realised that it would have been better to just keep quiet because the next words out of my mouth were:“I hope you had fun beating up my cousin.”It was not so much the words that were the problem, but rather they way I said them. They had unintentionally come out hostile and venomous.Katerina never turned back, not even an inch. She did, however clench and unclench her fists and began stomping out, mumbling a very colourful assortment of profanities. It was then that I realised that

  • Vampires and Vampire Hunters   37: Damsel in distress

KATERINAWe had gotten on the first available flight, rushed, panicked and panting. The phone call my mother had received was one fatal call, the call from Death. Apparently, my parents had not been secretive enough, and he had caught on to their plan. He was, at the moment, holding my brother, along with Jeremy and the boys hostage. Tonight, was the night he was convinced that he would achieve his goal. He knew that he had power over us, and we could bend to his will. The flight was once again, long and uncomfortable and distress was evident on Haydon’s parent’s faces as well as my own.“I just don’t understand how he figured out that we knew. How the hell could he have known. We showed no evidence whatsoever that we knew about his real plan

KATERINADestroy the remains. Destroy the damn remains.Haydon and I might as well have just broken up because there was no way in hell, that we’d be able to, firstly take the remains away from Death, and secondly, destroy them when they were imbued in dark magic.“That’s why we tried to keep you two apart when we started suspecting. We wanted to figure out how to prevent the prophesy. But clearly you two had to start liking each other and ruin our plans. Honestly Katerina, first underground fights and now this.”And once again, I was busted.“How did you know?”My father smirked and shook his head, “Your brother is an awful liar, Dylan Connors.”

  • Vampires and Vampire Hunters   35: The truth

KATERINAWe sat in the lounge beside a fire. It had gotten colder now, so much so, that I found my self near Haydon, clinging to him for dear life while receiving some serious glances from my mother. Haydon’s parents were clearly way more accepting of our relationship than mine were at this point.“So, let me start,” Mr Veneziano said. “It all began the day Death resurrected Haydon. For something needing so much of power, there are always serious consequences. The first, was the death of his wife, Elisabeth.” He then paused, clearing his throat, and the continued. “The second, and most dangerous consequence, was a prophecy. It was a prophecy fortold by the oracle, Cecilia. The day Haydon was resurrected, she rushed here and immediately told us what she has foreseen. That day, I had kicked her out of this house, banishing her from ever se

  • Vampires and Vampire Hunters   34: Surprise

KATERINAWe sat in the dining room which was as grand as anything I had ever seen. The beautiful mahogany table was decorated with a white silk cloth which had intricate blue petals embroidered in. The table was filled with many different types of food which was odd, since Haydon and his parents did not eat any food, instead, they sat with wine glasses filled with blood on the table. It had been exactly five minutes of the four of us staring at each other awkwardly, when finally, Haydon broke the silence. “Is there a reason that we are waiting and staring at each other?”Mr Haydon spoke, never lifting his eyes from me, “Yes, we are waiting for a few guests. They should be here, right about-“Knock. Knock. Knock.

  • Vampires and Vampire Hunters   33: First encounter

KATERINAWe arrived in Italy after a long, uncomfortable flight. I hadn’t been able to sleep at all as I though about what Haydon’s father’s reaction would be to me and began to mentally prepare myself for rejection. Italy was quite beautiful this time of the year, and the weather was warm enough to allow me to remove my thick jacket soon after we arrived at the airport. After we had gathered our luggage, Haydon rented us a car and we began driving. In all honesty, I paid less attention to the road, people and homes which passed us, and more attention to my shaking hands.“Katerina, calm down please. You have nothing to fear, I will be beside you the entire time, okay?”His words, meant to be reassuring, did nothing to get me to calm down. If
