I touched my hair where golden highlights had sprouted and ran my hands down my body--my much thinner body. I wasn't wearing a bra under my T-shirt so I could feel that my breasts had perked up considerably. My waist had narrowed, and when I felt my stomach it was tight and muscular.

"Oh ... shit." I gripped my ass, fearful that my ghetto-booty would have disappeared. I was relieved to find it still present and even more booty-licious since I now had an hourglass figure. I'm not saying I was a size two, but I was freaking hot!

I paced back and forth cursing and admiring my new looks. Again I tried to determine if I was afraid—I should have been, but I wasn't. I looked too damned good, and I wasn't even going to pretend. I tried to piece together the exact events of what happened once I left Club Midnight with what's-his-name. Tige. If he wasn't a rapist, then did we … do it?

It was fuzzy. We'd driven to his place, I think. I remember a sparsely furnished apartment. He'd been talking and had kissed my neck in a way that made me feel weak afterwards. Other than that, the only thing I remember was him thanking me for a lovely time. He hadn't even touched me in a sexual way, but I felt as if I was in the afterglow of the best sex of my life. He was driving me home, and I remember an explosion of light!

A car hit ours, on my side. I remembered! We had been in an accident, and I had been thrown out onto the street. Bits and pieces of my memory began returning. The Rasta had been standing over me, and then I was being carried, a sensation as if I were flying. The next thing I remember was him and me at my home. He had made me invite him in, repeating it over and over again until I could speak the words.

The memory of last night made my legs weak. I sat, my mouth going dry. I couldn't bring up any more memories.

After inviting him in, there was nothing.

~*~

As much as I wanted to sit on my couch curled into a ball of sorrow, I knew that I had to find some answers.

I had the vampire teeth and unnatural otherworldly beauty. I had amazing speed, but what about strength?

I looked for something to move or pick up. The stove. I had dropped a slice of carrot on the side of the stove a week ago and had meant to move it so that I could sweep it out.

I opened the oven door enough to slip my hand inside for a good grip. It took absolutely no effort to lift! My stove felt as if it was made of foam. I dropped it with a thud.

"Shit!" I shook my hands as if a spider had crawled across my fingers. "Okay, I'm a vampire. Shit, I'm a vampire." Saying it out loud helped to calm me. "Vampires drink blood. Do I want to drink blood?"

The idea of blood did not seem appealing at all. Okay, no desire for blood. I grabbed a can of soda from the fridge. I guzzled down half of it before it came right back up. Of course that could just be because I was queasy. I decided that test was inconclusive.

What about garlic? Was I now repelled by garlic? That would be a shame since I don't think you can make a decent meal without lots of garlic.

I searched the fridge for a jar of minced garlic. I didn't have any. But I knew I had some garlic powder. I picked it up from the spice rack. Cool, almost a full container. I twisted off the top and sniffed. Nothing. I sprinkled a bit onto my finger. Nothing. There was no burning sensation or whatever is supposed to happen when a vampire comes into contact with garlic. One vampire myth blown. I'm not sure if garlic powder is really garlic, so maybe that test is only semi-conclusive.

What about crosses and religious artifacts? I had a cross on a necklace in my jewelry box. I hurried back to my bedroom and opened my jewelry box. I reached inside and felt a jolt of fire. The sensation was like being electrocuted and it was both immediate and incredibly painful. It knocked me on my ass. After I had got my wits back and could investigate, I discovered that it hadn't been the cross that had burned me but my silver loop earrings. Oh, hell no! No no no no no! I couldn't wear silver anymore? I had spent serious money on my jewelry, and I couldn't wear half of it?

After sucking on my burning fingers to reduce the pain, I was too scared to think about touching the cross. Silver hurt too much. What about sunlight? It was dark out, just after nine at night. I decided to test that in the morning.

I never got into the whole vampire craze, so all my knowledge of vampire came from my collection of Blaxploitation movies—in particular Blacula and Scream, Blacula, Scream. I remembered how that African vampire had howled and screamed when he was reduced to ashes after being exposed to the sun.

I wasn't all that anxious to recreate the experience. I've been ashy, but I don't want to be ashes.

I could see my own reflection, but could I shape-shift? Didn't vampires turn into bats or mist or something? I concentrated until I felt like a serious dumbass because it was evident that I was not even close to changing into something else.

Was ... was I dead? How could I test that? I didn't want to consider it. If I could walk around and think then I was alive, and I was not going to get all caught up in labels—death, vampire, undead.

To get real answers, I needed to return to Club Midnight. Somebody had turned me, leaving me with no answers, no instructions, nothing. That just wasn't right!

I got ready to go out. Although I was a vampire, it didn't mean that I was going to walk up in the club looking jacked up. I dressed in a black silk shirt without a bra to show off my newly perky boobs. I dug through the back of my closet for a pair of black pants that a day earlier I would have been bursting out of. Now they hugged my curves and looked the way I had wanted them to look on me when I first purchased them—before I had tossed them into the back of the closet when I couldn't squeeze my big thighs into the legs. Next I pulled on my low-heeled boots instead of spiked heels in case I needed to do some running.

I didn't need any makeup, but I put on some lipstick and styled my highlighted natural. Let's be real. When a sister goes natural, we have these images of flowing locks and twirls. My hair persisted in being a giant-ass Afro puff that I couldn't comb. I was pleased that I now had a natural that spiraled without the use of rods or Dark and Lovely hairdressing.

I studied myself in my mirror, truly happy that I could see my reflection because I really looked hot! Using an emery board, I fished a black choker made of strips of leather and polished black wood from my jewelry box. I spritzed myself with So Sexy perfume. I looked good and everything, but I couldn't get those freaking teeth to go back in. I guess I would have to do the Mona Lisa smile. I practiced it for a few seconds before leaving for the club.

I got into my car and headed to the club alone. When I arrived, it was nicely crowded. The DJ was cranking the new joint by Lil Wayne, and the dance floor was crowded. I've always held my own in any environment, but I no sooner entered the club before I had the attention of half a dozen brothas!

Under any other circumstance I would have eaten it up, but I did not want the attention tonight and wished they would go about their business. I spent more time declining invitations to dance than I did in searching for Mr. Rasta man.As I searched the crowd, I felt a tingling that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I looked around, ignoring the guy who had been leering at me.Across the dance floor was a man who looked so out of place I'm surprised I hadn't noticed him earlier. This man looked as if he would be more at home at the Country Club, not a dance club.He had blonde hair and blue eyes and wore dark pants, a white shirt, and a black tie. If he weren't Caucasian, he'd look like a follower of the Nation of Islam. I guessed his age to be mid-thirties, and he was damn pale. His skin was almost translucent, so I knew he had to be a vampire like me. ."Hey, Sista, where you going?" I ignored the leering guy and headed across the room. For the first time I felt fe

"Where is Tige?""The Rasta? I don't know. When I woke up he was gone. Can somebody tell me what is going on?"The woman dressed like a Greek goddess glanced at one of the men. He was dressed conservatively in a gray suit, his dark hair combed straight back, his style straight up early eighties politician, as if he were going for the Ronald Regan look. What was wrong with these vampires? Didn't they know people didn't walk around dressed like that anymore?Brother Man, though, was different. He wore all black and matched me. He wore nice pants and an expensive looking silk shirt. His almost shaved head gleamed, and he sported a neat goatee. He had a gold stud in his earlobe and understated jewelry on his fingers and wrist. He gave me the eye, starting at my feet and stopping at my eyes. He frowned slightly before crossing his arms and turning away.I dismissed him, too. He was going to be of no help to me. Thanks, brotha."Look," I said. "If you can tell me anything at all tha

I checked the time. Shit, I needed to be home before sunrise. I couldn't stop thinking about that Vampire that I'd killed—well … that had made me kill him. He was ashes just like that. Poof! I sped up.By the time I got home, my stomach hurt so badly that I almost doubled over with cramps. I was ravenous. My mouth watered, my gums tingled, and my pointy teeth lowered.I grabbed my purse and hurried into my apartment before any of my nosy neighbors saw me and thought I was on something.I opened the fridge and remembered how the soda had made me sick. Maybe meat would be better. I grabbed an opened pack of hotdogs and shoved two into my mouth, chewing greedily.I vomited them into the sink. I fell down to my knees and cried. How was I supposed to satisfy this hunger? I didn't crave blood. And I was in no condition to go prowling the night looking for somebody's neck to experiment on. Besides, I wasn't going to be caught out there this close to dawn.My ex had been hinting for a boo

After Kent left I tried to sort through my feelings and thoughts. There was no mistaking it. I was no longer the person I had been twenty-four hours ago—if I was a person at all. I wasn't going to get any help from other vamps. They were going to try to kill me. Tige, the Rastafarian, was who I needed to be talking to. Somehow I didn't sense malice in his actions. He had turned me because of the accident. But where was he? Tony had mentioned a Rogue who made a Third—me. Why hadn't he come back to help me, though?Okay, it was a big problem, but I had other pressing concerns. I was one of the undead, so how the hell was I going to work my nine to five? And my friends and family were definitely not going to be happy about this. And you know what? I kinda liked the sun. And I'd never be able to eat another chocolate bar. Also, I'm not sleeping in a coffin! I'm not going to be a fashion victim either. If I had to be undead, I was going to still rock my DKNY and BABY PHAT.I stopped m

Instead I thought of some reason that he wouldn't want to see me at work—like if I had spinal meningitis or hepatitis…"Well my doctor said that this…rash isn't contagious…as long as the pus stops draining from the sores. But if you really need me in I don't mind wearing gloves. And I can spray disinfectant just in case he's wrong and this stuff all over me is actually contagious. Well…I'll just call in later in the week. Bye." I hung up the phone contemplating how I would handle work, and something became clear to me. I believed that somehow I was coming back from this. I'm a Vampire. Why the hell am I worried about what to tell my boss? My death, unfortunately, superseded my ability to hold a job. I was about to hold another pity party when I heard a noise outside my door. Somebody or something was standing outside my apartment door.Fear like a cold hand gripped me. "Who's there?" I whispered from my bedroom."Let me in," a voice said more in my head than out loud.My breath c

"It's in the way you talk," Tony interrupted, "the way you sit, even the way you continue to breathe even though you no longer need oxygen in your lungs." His gaze returned to me. I caught my breath and held it. Damn. He was right. I was making myself breathe. That was why there was such an air of calm about him. It wasn't only that he was a cool guy.He wasn't breathing.I was having a tough time staying focused on what was important instead of on how fine Tony was as he paced back and forth in front of me. "I, um, am I in trouble for killing that man last night? I mean, it was kill or be killed.""Johan? No. Had it been an actual kill you would have been given his seat on the Council. We understand it was his recklessness that caused his death."I could see that there was something more, or Tony wasn't exactly pleased about something, but the human part of me didn't want credit for a murder, and the Vampire part wasn't developed enough to understand why I should."Johan." "We don't need a car to travel."Can I fly? Or did I turn to mist ... Oh no, not a bat! I didn't want to turn into a winged rat! "Tony, I'd rather just take the car." Tonight I simply didn't think that I could take another revelation. Tony shook his head. "Can't. There's no time. We couldn't drive to my house from here before dawn. I don't live in the city." "So … how are we … going to get there?""Don't worry, I'll do all of the work."He took hold of my arm, and I would have pulled back except I didn't want to end up falling through Never-Never Land. "Relax," he said. I shivered at the masculine tone of his voice so close to me. How could I relax when I was going off somewhere with a man, vamp—whatever! -–who had just tried to kill me?I wondered if I was making the worst mistake of my undead life. ~*~We were moving. No, the world around us was moving.I was getting a serious case of vertigo.I felt as if I was on the verge of stumbling except I didn't because Tony

He led me down a corridor whose walls were lined with paintings of beaches and natives with children frolicking in the sunshine. The corridor led to a thick wooden door. The door opened to a long, stone stairwell like the one in the Council house. Thinking about that made me wary. Tony led the way but he kept looking back at me as if he thought I was going to chicken out. Hell, at this late hour I had no choice but to trust him.We got to the bottom of the stairs. The temperature was much cooler, and it was definitely underground. I didn't feel as if I was in a cellar, though. The space was very comfortable. The stairs ended in a spacious room that had the feel of 1001 Arabian Nights. There were satin cushions and settees. Silks hung from the ceiling and walls. Colorful pendant lights provided splashes of brightness. The stone floor was covered in expensive throw rugs that at first glance appeared haphazard but were artful."Wow ..." I said, my mouth hanging open. "This ... is ..

"Are you ready, my love?" Alexis asked."I'm not sure," I said. "She's still so little."Alexis kissed the dark curls at the top of our daughter's head. "Tiye is strong enough to travel back to our realm. We've been here a year. Don't you miss home?""Yeah, but a year here is only like five minutes in the Above," I said."More like a few weeks," Alexis said. "The Ladies are anxious to meet their new niece."He gently lifted his sleeping daughter, tucking her blanket carefully around her body. She had just turned three months old and was as round and plump as a melon. Her thick, curly hair was sure to be as wild as mine was when I wasn't wearing the plaits that Oni put them in. She looked like us—my brown skin with Alexis' nose and Mona Lisa smile.Alexis had named her after an ancient Egyptian Queen who was the deity of light. Paul smiled and relaxed. I led him to the study where Alexis was waiting. Alexis nodded in greeting."Alexis, thanks for agreeing to this meeting," Paul said.Alexis gestured to a throne. "Please, have a seat."Paul looked at the throne and sat. "Mmm, comfy."Alexis moved the other two thrones to form a triangle, and we sat."We saw the gathering video," Paul said. "We didn't know we were being filmed," I said."I figured as much," Paul said. "But you made a good point when you said that one supernatural group cannot rule over another. My Werewolf Council has been meeting for the last few days. We don't want a war with the Neratomay.""And we do not want a war with the Werewolves," Alexis said.Paul nodded. "We have been in discussions with the Alliance of the Supernaturals, and I expressed King's beliefs that if we do not work together then we will all fall together.""That's right," I said."After a lot of negotiation, the Alliance would like to extend an offer for you to

Ran continued. "We asked the Wolves to coordinate their attacks with ours, and that is all they agreed to do.""But what about the carnage that occurred in Epic Cu?" The Councilmember asked."Are you for real?" I asked in irritation. "There were hundreds of Rectors at that gathering! All it would have taken was for one of those Rectors to snap Alexis' neck before he could summon King to close the portal to the Underworld. We had to take out the Rectors and luckily the Alpha aided us or—well we wouldn't be here and you'd still be kissing the ass of your demon master!"Alexis put his hand on mine but Ignacio smiled in amusement. Will you be quiet! Cyrene snapped silently in my head. When has that ever happened? I snapped back.Ladies, Alexis interrupted. Now is not the time. My love, try to be more…diplomatic.Fine, I replied."We won that war by any means necessary," Alexis said, his voice annoyed. "We don't appreciate your line of questioning. The Neratomay flashed themselves away once they were outside of Epic Cut. The Supernaturals carried away their dead and injured, and what was left inside of Epic Cu was blood, gore, and ash. Paul left with his pack, and Ran, King, Alexis, and I flashed back to our villa where King fell in an exhausted asleep.Alexis and I watched him with pride. "It could have gone so much different," I whispered."No." Alexis continued to gaze at King's small sleeping form. "Not if we understand King's true potential—this is the way it was meant to be."It was time discover the fallout so we turned on the radio and television. Many countries were in a state of emergency based on what had happened over the last several hours. News outlets and radio stations made announcements that people should stay indoors because there were reports of wild, strange beast attacks. Videos of humans turning into Vampires and using impossible speed to attack the beasts clogged the Internet. Supposed experts in the s

I moved from zombie to Wraith, pushing them through the portal and trying not to think about those they had possessed. The Wraiths will take you…Oni had said.I saw Alexis keeping King in the light flowing from the portal, but the portal had grown smaller. It was working!King was closing the portal to the Collective! As I zapped zombies and Wraiths, I noticed with surprise that the Supernaturals were fighting with the Neratomay to kill the zombies! When they ganged up and killed a zombie and the wraith left the zombie's body, I was able to zap the Wraith and send it back where it belonged."Aleawdat 'iilaa alealam alsuflii!" I chanted loudly along with King. Although I didn't understand the words, I could repeat them exactly. Then Ran, who still stood sentry beside me, began repeating the words. Alexis joined our chant, and that portal began shrinking even more. The larger Wraiths became bottlenecked trying to squeeze up and out of the shrinking portal. They were so freaking g

I stared at the center of the pentagram where so much power was streaming through to seek out vessels, as if that power was a thinking, conniving being. It infused its targets with power so they could fight for it. And Alexis thought that my son should face that? My little boy?"Alexis, he's just a baby!""He is a demon!" he said sternly. "He only pretends to be a baby because that's what you need, Kim. You have to know that it has been many years since our son was a baby."The way King talked to the Wolf Council, the way he seemed to understood so much and so easily, the way he commanded attention whenever he spoke. I didn't want my child to fight this battle, but Alexis and King both knew this was what King was meant to do.Alexis released me and turned toward the pentagram. He raised his hand and began pulling power from the portal in the center, pulling so much that he glowed with the unnatural light that the energy emanated.Paul squinted and stepped in front of me, preventin

Alexis raised his hand. "We learned the truth, secrets that have enslaved us all!" Alexis' nose began to bleed. He stumbled and swiped at the blood angrily and then raised it to show everyone. "Secrets that prevent me from speaking these truths. But you see! You see!"Ran glared out at the group. "We know, even if we can't speak it. But if you can read it in our heads, you will know this secret, too!"The pain was so sudden that I could not have taken a step. I couldn't even see! Buzzing filled my brain as instead of a dozen bees, hundreds of them seemed to fill my head. I had expected it and thought I was prepared, but there is no way to be prepared when someone is inside of you filling your brain to bursting!"Kim!" Paul shook me.I tried to open my eyes then realized they were open. I couldn't see!"Build your wall!" Paul shouted. "Build it now!"I tried to imagine the bricks—white bricks. I smelled Alexis and Ran, but so had Paul. He was already heading toward them. When we finally met up, I dropped Paul's clothes on the ground before him. He changed quickly back to a man while I stared up at the castle where more Neratomay than ever attempted to enter Epic Cu."Once we're inside we cannot flash ourselves out," I said.Paul narrowed his eyes. "You'll be trapped inside?"Alexis frowned, but Ran and I nodded.Paul slipped his shirt over his head and peered at the castle. "We can blow this bitch up.""Blowing up Neratomay won't kill us," Alexis said. "Not unless our heads are severed or our hearts pierced.""Why does this castle remind me of Hogwarts?" Paul asked.I smiled. "That's what I thought!""How do we enter?" Paul asked. "That entrance is a hopeless bottleneck." "You could enter through the front door once we're inside," Alexis said, pointing at the opening four stories up. "That's how we exited."Paul licked his lips. "I can make that jump.""Not as a

I asked."He searched my head," Alexis replied."Well, warn a sister next time," I said. Then I felt a loud buzz in my head, and across the room another Elder's head exploded. This created more bedlam and screaming from Council members who flashed themselves away or who sought the aid of another Elder."Do you feel that?" Ran asked."I don't feel anything because these people are screaming and hollering so loudly," I said. They were the most cowardly individuals I had ever seen. These powerful Vampires sat here crying like wusses! The very Council members and Elders who had tortured and murdered other lower level Neratomay could only hide and cry when they met a foe they couldn't overpower. They were the very definition of bullies!Ran turned to me. "It's Paul.""Paul? How…?""I can still hear him from my tim
