The nurse finally let Greg in though not so willingly after she noticed the uncomfortable situation Marianne was having, she stood by the door for a good minute while he walked in and approached the bed Marianne was on. Greg sat back on the stool he had been sitting on before he left and held Marianne’s hand.
“It’s going to be okay, I’m here for you”, he assured her.
Nothing anyone would say could change Marianne’s mood at that point, the only thing she wanted was to have her baby back, but that was not possible. For the last two days of knowing she was pregnant she had been planning out his or her future, where she would give birth, what kind of clothes the baby would be wearing, what school or food to consider etc.
Now what? Does she just continue like nothing ever happened? Must she forget what could have been a second child again? She turned to look over at the sofa where Rose had been sleeping,
“my little Rose” she thought to herself, “Mummy’s going to be strong just for you”.
Amazingly a little smile managed to grace her pale face and added some light to the room, Greg thought she was beginning to loosen up and stood up to give her a hug and said, “I knew you would come around baby”.
Marianne just sat there unmoved for a good ten seconds and waited for her daughter to wake up, of which she did finally.
“Mummy?” Rose’s first thought as she woke up.
She run to Marianne’s bed side and attempted to climb to reach up to her mother. Marianne freed herself from the clutches of Greg’s meaningless hug, extended her arms towards their daughter and lifted her up to receive the warm hug Rose was preparing for her.
Marianne held on so tight like her life depended on that cute genuine hug, Rose lifted her head to her mum’s face and finally asked,
“What happened mummy? Did you not like the nice food daddy bought for you?”, she asked with confusion and curiosity mixed in her face.
Nurse Lucy, who was still standing at the door in observance, looked at Marianne with more suspicion and almost dared to ask Greg what he put in her food. Marianne gave a quick shake of the head to signal the nurse not to do or say anything to cause drama or raise unnecessary fights, knowing Greg, he would disrespect every inch of her until they were kicked out.
“I don’t really like milkshake baby”, Marianne crinkled her nose, smiled and answered Rose who was still waiting for a response.
"I don't like it either, it makes you sick and I get very sad", Rose said to her mother.
"Oh my darling, I'm so sorry about that okay, no more scares I promise",
Marianne ran her hand through Rose's rich and healthy brunette hair which rested just perfectly on her shoulders and leaned back to rest her back after a long and painful day. She turned to the nurse and asked, "when can we leave?"
Lucy raised her eyebrows and raised a finger of her free hand to indicate that she'll only be a minute and left the room.
Marianne held Rose in her arms while they waited for the nurse to come back and give them feedback, she was hopping Greg wouldn't say a word until they got home but alas it was just impossible for a man who felt entitled to give his opinion at any given time.
He came up to her head, placed a soft kiss on her forehead and brushed his hand through her black long and shiny hair.
"What can I get you? You must be feeling weak after all that was removed", he asked her.
After what she went through with the possibility of him being the cause, Marianne was not going to receive anything edible from him again. She opened her eyes and gave him a suspicious look while Rose had her head facing the other side rested on her chest,
"I'm fine", she said calmly.
And the nurse walked in right when he was about to ask Rose the same question,
"alrighty you guys, you're good to go. You seem a bit weak so I took the liberty of ordering you something nice from our cafeteria and some fruits to bring back that energy we so desperately need back, it'll be waiting for you at the front desk", Lucy quickly explained as she gently took Marianne of the drip and helped her out of the hospital bed as Greg stood aside with Rose right by his side.
She helped gather her things and got organised and whispered to Marianne,"if you ever need help you know where to find me alright?".
"Mummy let's go." Rose requested impatiently.
Marianne looked at her, nodded her head and turned back to the nurse to thank her for everything,
"you've been so kind, I feel so much better. Thank you", she squeezed the nurse's hand as she picked her bag and headed for the door.
Marianne extended her hand towards Rose and Rose quickly walked to her mother to hold her hand and they left the room all together.
Indeed her package was waiting for her at the front desk and with sudden hunger she grabbed it and took a peak to see what she could nibble on immediately.
"Wow", Greg looked at her so shocked after she refused his proposal of getting her something,"anyway i'll settle the bill and get something for Rose, what would you like sweety?", he bent down to hear her response up close.
"A chocolate cake daddy", she said with so much excitement.
"Alright my darling", he winked and headed to do what he said.
Marianne and Rose sat in the waiting room as Greg was settling the bill then he headed to the cafeteria to get Rose's cake, seatee two chairs away from them was a man staring into the distance with his elbows resting on his knees and his hands in a fist pressed against his lips.
Even though he looked devastated, Marianne could not ignore the perfectly crafted structure of his face and body, she had never noticed a man like this since her first years with Greg.
The man had short brunette hair with light brown highlights, a strong jawline and a body one might describe as that of a god. Even in his work suit, you could see his huge muscles bulge through his coat.
"Enough of that Marianne", Marianne thought to herself, "he looks so sad".
Rose noticed that her mother had been staring at the sad man and got down from her seat to offer him a fruit that she removed from the bag Lucy had prepared for them, lifted it towards him and said,
"here you go, mummy has a lot, it's for energy", she gave him that sweet smile that always melted Marianne's heart.
He snapped out of whatever thought he had, looked at Rose with such surprise and put a hand out to receive the fruit offered to him, and a tear rolled down his cheek,
"such a beautiful soul, merci petit", he said to her with a faint smile.
"You're welcome", Rose replied as she headed back to her seat next to her mother.
"I'm sorry, she does this a lot", Marianne apologized to the man.
"No need madame, she has a beautiful heart. You cherish that", he answered.
Marianne received the message and nodded, she could not help but wonder why he was so sad so she dared ask,
"I'm so sorry for sticking my nose where it doesn't belong, but why are you here? You look really devastated".
The man looked at the floor first before gathering the courage to respond,
"I just lost my daughter in a terrible accident". He stood up to leave the room at once and left Marianne in suspense, not that it was any of her business.
"How tragic", Marianne said to herself.
Marianne was staring in the direction in which the sad man left and stopped to think about how he could be feeling, he didn’t look that old so his daughter could not have been in her teens yet unless otherwise.Just the thought of losing a child you already have memories with sent chills down her spine and made her feel even worse for the sad man. Greg mysteriously appeared out of nowhere and asked her what she had been thinking of cause it pretty much looked like she had zoned out for a moment.“Nothing, did you get the get the cake?”,Marianne asked him as she started to pick up her belongings and held Rose’s hand to get up.“All out can you believe that honey?”, he looked at Rose trying to show disappointment in his face. When what actually happened was...While Greg was on his way to the counter where he had spotted very attractive and delicious looking chocolate cakes through the glass counter, walking towards the counter he bumped into one o
The garage door closed behind them and Greg turned off the engine and told Rose to head in while he and Marianne took a minute to talk,“Hey sweetie go in and watch some TV, Mummy and I will only be a minute okay?”,He maneuvered his way to the back while still in his seat, helped her out of her seat belt and opened the door for her and she quickly ran to the entrance through the garage into the house and disappeared.Greg got comfortable and turned to Marianne,“I really did not find any cake, they must have-“,“you think I’m worried about that?”, Marianne cut him off with a question.“What was in that milkshake Greg?”, she went straight to the point.“What are you trying to say Marianne, I put nothing in it. How could you think of me like that?”, he answered so offended by her accusation then turned to the wind shield and placed his hands on the wheel to lay his head on them.Unmoved, Marianne’s feelings started changing by the minut
Greg hurriedly picked up his phone and sat back on his seat, Marianne came closer to see what was up with him and he pretended to reach for something in his pocket so he could hide the card.“What was that all about?”, she asked him about burst in laughter because it looked like he was about to sweat his hair off.“Nothing, you just startled me, a whistle would help you know”, he said so agitated yet trying to keep his cool.Marianne couldn’t help but laugh at the scene, he looked like a child trying to hide a piece of meat in his mouth while being interrogated by his mother. It was really amusing for her.“Anyway, sorry”, Marianne apologised as she exited the kitchen still chuckling.Greg let out a breath of relief thinking he had handled that well, most women would be on their man’s neck trying to get the truth out of him.“But she didn’t seem to care”, he thought to himself with eyes squinted and fingers pressed to his chin. He also wondered ho
Marianne still couldn’t believe what just happened, as she drove away she glanced into the side window to see if Greg was waiting for her to leave or running to the car to stop them.He just stood there, motionless, straight faced and blunt. She couldn’t make out what emotions he was showing from that distance but deep down she knew he was waiting for this day, but if she was frank with herself, so was she. 10 years of a lifeless meaningless relationship? What was she doing? Now all she had to think of was how to survive on her own with her little Rose, the first step was to find Nurse Lucy and see what happened from there. Only God knew what lay ahead.“You okay sweetie?”, she checked her mirror to see what Rose had been doing in the back so quiet.Marianne was shocked to see that she was flat asleep holding her favorite stuffed doll, the one she called princess Mickayla. Such a sweet site she could shed a tear, but that was not necessary especially since sh
"We really need to stop meeting like this sweetie", a faint voice echoed as Marianne was coming to.Disoriented, Marianne held her aching head and started to look around the room with squinted eyes for her daughter. But she wasn't in the room with her, she put her head back down and asked, "where's my baby?"Marianne asked with a horse voice and swallowed to wet her desert throat hoping they didn't give her bad news."She's okay, you're lucky those people called for paramedics fast. Any later and you both would've been dead by now", nurse Lucy replied. She checked Marianne's stability and did the usual mental test of 'what's your name?' and 'torch in the eyes'.Marianne could not just lay back not knowing where her daughter was and how she was doing. She attempted to get up with one hand but Lucy would not let her and she started to resist, after all all mothers would do the same until they knew their child was safe and sound."I'll take you
Marianne came face to face with the most beautiful man she had ever seen, he probably in his mid thirties, at least six foot two, chiseled features and a well built body structure. So fine you could eat off of him, such eye candy. It felt wrong that she was drooling over a fine man while her daughter lay lifeless right in front of her, as she quickly sat back in the wheelchair Lucy addressed the man,"Mr Sorrell, is everything alright", she asked him as she walked to the door where he just froze as he watched poor Rose laying in the hospital bed with so many bandages.Raphael turned his head with eyes still fixed on Rose to respond to nurse Lucy,"Oui?... Oh", he shook his head, making his midnight black hair shift sides and fall just a little above his forehead and faced Lucy."I'm so sorry, I am just concerned about the little girl laying there", his French accent sent chills down Marianne's spine as she sat hiding her face away from Raphael.
Raphael was escorted to another section of the hospital, where the mortuary was. As they got closer, his body ran cold and he couldn't believe it was actually reality. He was filled with too many emotions to contain, he promised his late wife that he'd protect and care for their daughter with his life. Unfortunately fate had other plans.10 months ago..."Will you promise me something?", Christina said on her death bed, feeling her life escape her body with every second that passed.Raphael held her hand and leaned in to hear her faint voice, tears filled Christina's eyes as she thought about leaving her still very young daughter in this world without a mother to comb her hair and give her boyfriend advice when she becomes of age, or take pictures of her at her graduation and hold her grandchildren. Her heart sank as she looked at Raphael who was trying his very best to be strong for her sake and the sake of their daughter, his slightly dark skin st
Raphael remembered that he left the car key in Christina's bag so he went back for it real quick, but as he was getting closer to the room, Raphael noticed that there was commotion a around his around his wife's room so he quickly ran up to see if Christina was okay. One of the nurses tried to tell him that he could not get in but the words happened to pass him like a flash, he managed to work his way through and into the room, Christina had been shaking uncontrollably and then shut down right before his eyes. She was gone, no more life in Christina Sorrell. Raphael wondered where Bellamy was during all of this only to see her coming with a bunch of toys, skipping and humming to a song.Still in shock and a little disoriented, Raphael had to pretend nothing happened and get Bellamy away from the scene.Present..."Mr Sorrell?", the nurse he was walking with called.Raphael snapped out of his flashback and looked at her with eyes red from cry
“So, Raphael, what’s it going to be?” George leaned forward, his expression a mixture of concern and frustration. “Are you going to get the help you need, or should I go ahead and file a restraining order? You know it’s protocol, bud.” Raphael’s eyes were hollow, remnants of the torment he had endured since losing his wife and daughter. The mention of a restraining order hit him like a punch to the gut. “I’ll do whatever it takes,” he replied, his voice cracking slightly. “I’ll go to rehab. I’ll do anything to make things right with Marianne and Rose.” He had dreaded the idea of rehabilitation, the thought of facing his demons, ever since that fateful day when he lost everything. Yet, he knew that without taking this step, he could lose even more. Marianne and Rose were worth the struggle. Within hours, two able-bodied men, colleagues of George’s, escorted Raphael home. They helped him gather what he needed, while the weight of his past loomed heavy in the air. As they drove to the
Raphael felt a surge of guilt flood his heart as he looked at Marianne. He had put her through days of pain and confusion, all while believing he was doing the right thing. In one part of his mind, he was sure that Rose would be better off, away from the storm of her parents' toxic relationship. He thought he was sparing his daughter from the same chaos that had plagued their family. Yet, in another part of him, he felt a deep, aching sorrow for Marianne. He could feel her silent anguish, the emptiness left by the absence of her only child. The thought of her missing Rose gnawed at him, and the weight of his decision pressed heavily on his chest, almost making it hard for him to breathe. He couldn't even look her in the eyes, let alone find the strength to say a word. As he stood there, unsure and tormented, Marianne’s gentle voice broke the silence. "Someone’s here to see you," she said, her tone soft yet tinged with an emotion he couldn’t quite identify. She stepped aside, and ther
Marianne stood frozen, her breath caught in her chest as she took in the sight she had dreamed of for what felt like an eternity—her daughter, Rose, safe and alive. The last few days had been a waking nightmare, each day a torturous blend of hope and despair as she searched, refusing to let go of the belief that she would find her daughter again. Now, here Rose was, only a few steps away, hand-in-hand with Raphael, the man she had once thought she could trust.Marianne’s mind spun, emotions tangling in a whirlwind that left her wordless. Fear, love, relief—all warring within her as she tried to process the moment. She couldn’t bring herself to care that Raphael was standing there; all that mattered was Rose. Even as the cavalry she had enlisted to help bring Rose back closed in around them, Marianne’s eyes never left her daughter’s. The men quickly moved to apprehend Raphael, who, to her relief, offered no resistance. His only crime had been taking a minor from her mother, a crime tha
Raphael had spent the entire night in a restless haze, his thoughts consumed by memories of his dead wife and their little girl. He hadn't slept at all, his mind haunted by the life he'd once had—a life that felt a thousand miles away now. The image of his wife, with her gentle smile and the warmth in her eyes, lingered painfully in his mind. And then there was his daughter, a fragile, innocent soul taken far too soon. He could still remember the way she laughed, the way her small hand would curl around his finger when she was afraid. The guilt of losing them weighed heavily on him, an unshakable burden that only seemed to grow with time. His heart ached, a deep, constant throb that reminded him of the life he'd failed to protect. Now, there was Rose—Marianne’s daughter. Marianne, his former lover, had left him after everything fell apart, after tragedy struck and their worlds were shattered. She had taken Rose and moved on, but fate had brought them back together in the most unexpect
The next day had arrived and Marianne was getting more and more impatient. She tried hard to keep that to herself but not all of it would stay hidden. Lucy noticed that she was stuck between losing hope and having the will to still fight for her daughter.Sometimes, her eyes lit up when she saw more armed bodyguards arrive at Lucy's house. The search was becoming more and more real, nothing like what Marianne thought it was going to be. She imagined that the solution she had in mind would have worked better, easily informing the police about the missing girl and then putting it all over the news and in the newspapers, on posters as well. She imagined that anyone would have called the police back and given them leads to Raphael because he would have been the said suspect. Marianne, at some point, even went to George about it, just so she could understand exactly why he decided to call off her plan."Marianne, do you really think that the detectives under the law are du
Chapter ThirtyThe feeling of her heart racing was driving Marianne crazy, her hands trembled so much that if she was asked to hold anything, the object would drop to the floor. She tried to fight back all the terrible things that were running through her mind for the sake of Lucy and George, yet she didn't know if she had to be mad at them too for keeping the news a secret."How could this be? This is a lie! You can't possibly…. " tears ran down from Marianne's eyes and George reached out to try and comfort her,"No! Don't touch me! You knew that this was my father but you never told me, you kept it a secret from me this whole time, and for what!?" She yelled. At that point, Marianne stood up to keep her distance from the man she called a criminal, the man that claimed to be her father."Lucy, why are you so quiet? Tell me that this is a joke, please!""Marianne, I'm just as shocked as you are right now, I had no idea that you were my sister thi
Chapter Twenty NineThe next evening Marianne and Lucy were pacing around the kitchen and living room impatiently waiting for George.“Are you sure he told you that he will be here or was that another lie? What if he has just forgotten about all this?” Marianne kept asking.“You have got to stop with all your negative questions and answers, for real this time”, Lucy answered back.Even though Lucy kept asking Marianne to calm down, she herself, kept opening and closing the curtains to check if George had arrived, she kept checking her phone incase she missed the notification as well. There was always something about the evening that Marianne found confusing, how was it that the most peaceful time of a day would also turn out to be the most risky part as well? Even back when she was a child, she always noticed that most of the arguments between her and her mother usually started in the night time, but since they were both lovers of the
He turned to face Rose and began conversing with her. He asked her how physiotherapy was while he was gone and if she had fun without him.“Mr. Raphael, you’re the only fun man I’ve ever met, and I was very strong when you were not here. But Mummy was there sometimes, so it was fine”, she responded.“I missed you a lot, Rose. Thank you for calling me funny too, I mean, in a good way, that is. To show you how happy I am, why don’t we go out for some ice cream?" Raphael asked,“well, I don’t think mommy would allow it”.“Well, since your mother and I are good friends, there will be no problem, I want to get you any flavor you like for being such a good girl okay. Come on”, he stood up and helped her put her crutches in place, clueless, she accepted and left out the door with him and into the car.***Marianne sat motionless on the sofa, hoping that Raphael could just come back with Rose. Sh
Time had gone by faster than Marianne could blink. Her palms got sweaty every time she thought about the evening dinner date with Raphael, she never thought that she could actually ever be able to go on a date or have any conversation with a man other than Greg. She was joyful and welcoming to patients more than the usual days. She snack out a few conversations with the doctors and nurses when they passed by her and asked a few questions. There was much to look forward to.During her lunch break, she went to check up on Rose and make sure that she was having the meal that Raphael had paid for. Rose had been working so hard with her physiotherapy, so hard that even in her spare time, she isolated herself in her room so that she could fall freely if she wasn't doing well.Eventually, Rose was able to stand properly, not excellently, and not good enough for her to not need the wheelchair anymore. The physiotherapist started by giving her crutches that she could u
