We were taken. We were imprisoned. We were starved. We were abused. We were slaughtered. We were hopeless. Then... we were saved. We are a group of women, surviving against all odds against those who oppress us. We don't back down no matter how bleak the odds, and we will triumph against those who wish to use us for their own gain. We are many, and we will not be prey ever again.

Chapter 1

I was taken from my home.I don't remember much about how it happened. It was dark and I was on the brink of sleep when someone grabbed me and started choking me to the point of syncope. There must have been several of them because I kicked and flailed but many hands grabbed my legs, arms, and held my neck down. I couldn't see their faces but I remember their hands.I knew I was drugged when I woke up because I felt sick just like every other time I took a potent medicine. I felt the nausea overtaking me from the stench of rot and something foul in the air. The ground was dirty and damp, though you could hardly see it through all the bodies.I wasn't the only one there. White noise of moans and aches echoed in the cold dark room. I'm sure I was making the exact same sounds. There were men talking above the white noise. I recognized it because it sounded so different from the rest of us. They sounded alive. They talked about something but I couldn't concentrate. It was hard to focus wh

Chapter 2

Don't you know when to shut up?" A rough voice across from us whispered out. We both looked at a girl with dull but angry dark eyes glaring at us with her back sitting against a cement wall. "If the guards hear you, they'll hurt you." Her brow furrowed in anger. A large welting bruise sat just above her right brow.I decided to call her Beef for the bickering anger in her as well as the large muscles on her forearms and wide stature. Even though she was one of the boniest girls here, she still seemed to have a lot of muscle on her as well."So what?" Hope lifted her nose in the air. "When the guards come I'll attack them and take their guns and needles.""You're a fool if you think you can overpower them." Beef scoffed and peered down the hallway as far as the glass would allow her."I can if you help me. I see you're strong. If I distract them then you can-""Stop." Beef interrupted. She stood up and shakily walked over to Hope and I, stepping on the others that stood in her way. A f

Chapter 3

The hallway was mostly made of wood with paintings lining the walls and intricate decorations on tables for display. Bright windows in front of us displayed an orange blazing sunset, a sign that gave me strength till I saw what was in front of it.A legion of guards with vicious dogs barking at us against their chain leashes stood between us and a large double door leading to our freedom. These guards held large assault style guns instead of the pistols the others had. They were also bigger, more muscular, and somehow more menacing than the ones before. An older man with a scar on his chin stood in the center with a confident stance. Our own legion stopped, analyzing the scene before us. We were fewer in number now but still many and would not be taken down or forced to yield our assault."We calmly ask you to drop your weapons and return to your cells." The older gentleman spoke with a gruffness about him."Or what?" Hope spit towards him with a menacing glare though there seemed to

Chapter 4

I looked around to see a larger rock near the edge of the group and stood on it."Stop! Everyone!" I called out to gather their attention. "I know how to get across. The red haired girl told me what to do and entrusted me to lead you all to safety. I will not fail you." I told them, trying to appear with the confidence of Hope. I noticed Beef in the group, staring at me with folded muscular arms. She gave away no expression.Without another word I started to lead the girls north, using the fading sunlight as my guide. The girls followed me without question. It must be because of Hope. She earned their trust and now I have temporarily gained theirs from her knowledge.I tried to keep a quick pace but some girls were limping, bullet and knife wounds leaking out of them. At this rate, we would be slow but I did not want to rest till we were across the river.I turned around and faced the group. "Those of you who can help carry any injured please do so, we must go quickly till we can cros

Chapter 5

I appointed myself and a few others to keep watch for the first couple hours so the rest of the girls could get some sleep.I could feel myself wanting to fall asleep from pure exhaustion so to prevent it, I headed into the edge of the forest and found a large broken branch on the forest floor. It was a good size, almost reaching my chin when I stood up straight and thick enough that my hand could just grasp the entire thing in my grip.I took it back with me and began to carve the edge of it with the knife Hope had given me. I wanted to turn it into a wooden spear to use for protection. My thoughts kept drifting to Hope as I carved away. Was she alright? Was she safe with her group? Would she come any moment now? What would we do if she didn't?Keep going north and follow the river on the west side. It'll lead you to safety.Hope's words kept replaying in my mind in tune to the swirling unease in my stomach. Don't turn to fear, I told myself. Just keep going. Don't think about anythi
