The Transfer Student

Reed

When Theron, our upcoming Alpha of the Phantom Moon pack, told the warriors of the pack a new family was moving into town we all went on high alert. It was strange because it was the same week he and his father, Alpha Zane, would be out for the week at a last minute mandatory meeting called by the elders. Outsiders don’t move to Sequim. Only pack members are allowed to live here.

I must admit, though, I didn’t expect what I saw when the new girl ran into me this morning. I received the assignment to wake up early and watch when the new girl showed up to get a read on her. I was in line to become the new Delta, replacing my father Norrik’s position when Theron took the throne as Alpha next year, so I was left in charge while they were all gone.

I won’t lie; I wasn’t happy about this assignment. One thing I hate most are early mornings, so I couldn’t be bothered to get dressed when I woke up this morning. I was supposed to be there before the new girls’ first class at 8 am, but who wakes up before 8 am!? I hit the snooze button so many times that I had no time before heading out to campus. One good thing about being a leader of the pack, though, is I could wear whatever I wanted and get away with it. When I got to campus, the front office told me her class schedule so I knew where she would go. I had just grabbed a coffee and muffin from the caf and was going to the gym where the new girl would be next. I figured I could get a quick workout after checking in with the high alert since I was already here. What I didn’t expect, though, was that what I was looking for found me instead.

When I turned around, I saw a beautiful, petite girl with intense eyes and great legs. I immediately noticed she had no scent, which meant she was human, or at least she wasn’t a werewolf. I couldn’t sense any magic surrounding her, which told me she probably wasn’t a witch. Even witches who can conceal themselves still radiate a sense of otherness. Her eyes were the only thing I could feel that held any mysticalness; the rest of her was ordinary. Hot as hell, but human nonetheless.

She was so innocent-looking and petite that I almost laughed out loud at the high alert. What kind of trouble could this small human girl get into? I may have been slightly biased, however, because I was instantly attracted to her long dark hair and gray eyes, and by the curves of her legs, you can tell she worked out. Plus, she seemed unfazed by my taunting her and even shot back at me, which intrigued me and my wolf Arkyn even more. This one was feisty.

True, it was strange the family showed up here, of all places. The defense system in the town allowed them in willingly, which was a cause for alarm, seeing as how the invisible field created a long time ago by a powerful witch priestess surrounding our town drew strangers away. People could come and visit, sure, but no one moved here. Ever. Only if you were part of the pack did houses seem to be on the market or jobs available. Well, until they showed up.

But I didn’t sense anything odd or weird about her when I saw her. I had initially thought they were witches since they moved into the old Ostyn house. Still, she said her name was Mazor, and her school records checked out with the same last name, so maybe they were just friends of the ancient witch clan, as the priestess said. She was quiet and mentioned she was from LA, a long way from home. Her mention of her mom getting a job at the hospital made me take a mental note to ask Shay what happened since her mom ran the nurse’s department there.

Shay was a nurse, and someone I thought would be my mate. We dated for a long time through the years. Still, the mating bond never clicked between us, so we eventually decided to call it quits last year in hopes of finding our mate and not hurting each other. I was 23 and still hadn’t found my mate; same for Theron, who just turned 24 last month, which is unusual for a werewolf. Shay found her mate shortly after we broke up at a convention for medicine in Canada. He came to live here with us to help in the hospital. At first, I couldn’t believe it and hated to admit it, but Koen is pretty cool, so I couldn’t hate the male.

I was attracted to the new girl, I have to admit, and she seemed nice enough, so I felt terrible for her when I looked into the class where I was taking her to find Olivia already barking orders at the girls. Olivia had gone crazy since she and Theron broke up last semester. She always thought she was supposed to be the next Luna, even as a kid, since her family was dominant in the community with their wealth and status. She took her role to the extreme when she and Theron first went together. She never really gave it up either, even now believing she and Ther would get back together eventually.

At first, I felt terrible for Olivia when Theron broke up with her out of the blue, but seeing how she acted with everyone made me regret my poor feelings for her. She even started hitting on the team’s males to make Theron jealous. Still, he couldn’t care less, especially with her new behavior. She even tried to hook up with me over the summer to get back at him, but my sister and I gave out to her, saying I’d never go behind my best friend’s back like that. Thankfully, she got the hint and hasn’t flirted with me since. Ther was vague on why he broke up with her and hadn’t hooked up with any of the females since. I asked once, but he didn’t say much, so I figured he’d tell me when he was ready.

After releasing Kamari to the wolves, I stood back to see how the new girl handled our dear squad captain. I was pleasantly surprised she seemed to handle herself well, not getting her head bitten off before Ms. Swan, the squad leader, came in. I left right after to report the news about our new transfer student to Ther via text and let him know what I found. I know he was hesitant about leaving with his dad, wanting to check in on the new family himself. Still, his dad insisted on him going, so he left it to me to sense the danger.

“Hey, Ther, just ran into our new student. No scent; she’s human. Last name Mazor. Seems to be just her and her mom. Will get the full scoop today. You can stop pacing now; all is clear.”

“Human? Are you sure? And only two females? Hmm, keep an eye on her. Could be witches.”

“yep, no scent. I didn’t sense magic on her but will do.”

I was just about to start warming up in the gym when his next assignment came through.

“Try to make sure she goes to the homecoming game this Friday so I can check it out myself. I’ll be back just in time for the game.”

Theron seems anxious about something and is taking it out on the new family for some reason. I wonder what’s going on at the meeting that’s stressing him out.

“Relax, Ther, I know it’s strange, but she doesn’t seem dangerous. But I’m on it.” all right, it looks like I’ll get another chance to flirt with the hot new girl. I need to plan my tactic to invite her well without seeming desperate.

“They never do Reed. Make sure the boys are ready to play. We HAVE to crush WestMoon this year. See you Friday.”

“That pack isn’t gonna know what hit ’em. See you soon, bro.”

I’ve known Theron my whole life; we’re basically brothers, so I know when he’s stressed, and he is definitely stressed about the last-minute meeting with the elders. It’s odd because the elders only plan a meeting a few months in advance, plus the weird timing of this new family coming to town only adds to the tension. I do have to admit it’s not a typical week, but... I don’t know how to explain it; something about this girl puts my wolf, Arkyn, at ease. He almost seemed to relax around her. Hopefully, I can convince her to go to Friday’s game without seeming too forward; wouldn’t want to push our dear new girl away.
