Theron
She was getting closer this time; I could feel it. Her sweet scent of honeysuckle and fresh rain consumed my senses. My wolf Hoku was going wild for her; we had to have her, claim her, and mate with her. I was running faster and faster through the forest, gazing at the white wolf in front of me, taunting me. I was just about to pounce and claim her as mine when I heard a siren from afar. I looked around but couldn’t see anything. It kept blaring, coming closer and closer. I looked, but my mate was nowhere to be seen. All there was in the foggy forest was snow on the ground and that siren sound blaring.
I jolted at the sound of my alarm early Saturday morning, yelling at me to get up. Rubbing my eyes and stretching my arms above my head, I went straight to the bathroom to take a cold shower and hopefully stench the hard-on I had from my dream. I had training with the pack this morning and intended to tell everyone what happened at the meeting this past week. Reed was especially anxious to hear the news. I deliberately waited to tell them about the possible war until after last night’s game. I needed them focused on WestMoon. Hopefully, we can win this year’s championship and gain the upper hand on the packs, making us the renowned champions and forcing the rest of the packs down, away from the idea of a war.
No one but the alphas and their heirs knew this, but the real reason for the football championships was for the power over the packs. Whoever won the tournament had the final say in all that happened between the packs. It was supposed to be a way to share the power from year to year, but Alpha Zander ensured he was always on top by any means necessary. He’s even resorted to cheating and brutally injuring players in the past to win. It’s what ended my father’s football career his senior year ten years before with a broken femur. Even with his super-healing abilities, it took him out of the game, making the Red Fang pack win again.
Thankfully, the elders could keep Alpha Zander at bay all these years, but their power was thinning. We found out at the meeting that Alpha Zander was the one who called the meeting with the packs. This year, he seemed extra aggressive about the championship. Alpha Zander looked straight at my father and me when he threatened to take the pack lands and “all who dwelled there” right after he beat us in the championship game. He claimed that after he took our lands and became the new alpha, he would use our warriors and come for the others.
It was strange his sudden interest in our people since it was never the pack itself he cared for but the blood of the family that took his son. It made me wonder if he knew we had just acquired a new family somehow and that it had to do with his sudden interest in our people. Their entrance into our lands was supposed to be a secret, though, so I only know how he would have known about them if there was a mole in our pack, which I refused to believe.
Thankfully, the Phantom Moon pack had been training our warriors in secret all these years and knew we had a good chance of keeping that vicious, callous wolf off our lands. Still, it would come at a significant cost. One my father and I would try our hardest to stop it from happening if we could, mainly because Alpha Zander would come himself for our pack. It was my uncle Osias, the old alpha of our pack, who killed his son in the final battle before Alpha Zander took my uncles life. Alpha Zander now has a personal vendetta against us. I know all of this and should be more focused on the rising threat at hand if it wasn’t for those damned dreams I keep having.
They started almost a year ago, faint at first, but as time passed, I kept getting more and more glimpses of this beautifully fierce white wolf running with me in our woods. White wolves were rare due to their strength and abilities. Knowing one was in my dream intrigued me even more. In one dream, I gained the knowledge of her scent and haven’t been able to shake it since. It reached a point where any other female wolf wouldn’t do.
That’s why I finally broke it off with Olivia last semester. I started to date her because my dad told me it would make a good pairing since I hadn’t found my mate yet. I was never her biggest fan, but I did as requested since I was to take the throne. As time went on, though, and I kept seeing what I now know is my destined mate, I started not being able to stand the scent of Olivia anytime I slept with her.
My father was angry at first and worried, as he had a right to be. Without my mate or a female to curb my aggressions, Hoku has become more vicious and hungry for anything to satiate him. Training hard with the team used to help his needs when we couldn’t stand to be around other females since learning our mate’s scent. With these dreams becoming more and more realistic, though, even training isn’t taking the edge off. I assured my father we had it under control and even explained that we knew our mate was near. I had thought the new girl may have had some answers for us, so I was eager to get home and meet her for myself.
Reed relayed she was human, but I didn’t believe him. It couldn’t be; my dreams had become so vivid and intense around the same time she just happened to show up; I knew she was the one I dreamt about. On Friday at the game, I felt her eyes on me, and when I turned, I felt Hoku stir. Even from far away, I could tell she was beautiful and wild. Our eyes held each other for what felt like a lifetime, and when she blushed, the heat of it caused my groin to stir. At half-time, I couldn’t help but gaze at her the whole time, noticing how cute she was trying to force herself to sit still as if she needed to join in, biting her full bottom lip as if it would hold her to the seat. All I could think about was nibbling on that lip. I knew she felt my eyes on her, unable to help herself from staring back.
I needed to get closer to her, to smell the scent I knew she would have. Her scent has been engraved in my mind since I first smelled it many moons ago. Thankfully, Ny had already started a bond with her, so getting her to come to the after-party was easy. Reed warned me she was only human, so just in case he was right and I was wrong; I made sure the pack knew not to cause a scene or give away what we were just in case she was only human. Our pack could get feral after a win like we had, shifting and running wild around the fire and surrounding woods. Werewolves are only make-believe to the human world, and we’d like to keep it that way.
During the rest of the game, Hoku was unhinged with the idea that we might meet our mate tonight. He played with a new vigor I’d never felt before. It was as if her presence brought out his strength. He was lethal and on point, feeding me the strength that helped us finally win the game. All the lads were excited to let loose and party when I only wanted to see her. I urged Hoku to keep calm inside while we waited for Naya and the girls to arrive. He was jumping and whirling within me; it took everything in me not to shift and run to her right away.
When Reed announced through the mind link she was approaching, I whirled to see Naya, Danika, and Lana linking arms with the new girl. It made me happy she had been invited and easily welcomed into the squad. As she approached, though, and I gazed into her stormy grey eyes, I couldn’t smell her. Not a whiff of the honeysuckle or fresh rain I craved so much. Reed was right; she was human and couldn’t be the wolf I had dreamt about. I felt my heart break a little, but something was still familiar about her. Hoku howled inside and whined while we gazed at her. Her eyes were radiant and seemed to swirl when she came closer to me.
TheronI knew I was acting strange because Naya gave me a look and said into the mind link to knock it off. Still, I couldn’t help but figure out who this human girl was, where she came from, and why I felt I knew her from somewhere. Not my mate, obviously, but somewhere. She must have felt something, too, because she looked back at me, catching me watching that perky ass of hers walk away. She was gorgeous, whoever she was. Reed knocked me out of my stupor, making me turn to him. He looked at me with a worried look.“You alright, bro? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”“You’re right. She’s human.” trying not to look too upset about that fact.“She’s hot, though, right? Told you.” Reed smirked, looking her way. I felt Hoku growl a little inside with a ping of dominance at Reed’s words. I immediately shook it off, though; who am I to claim her? She’s not my mate, and Reed is my best friend and unmated. I immediately dismissed it, thinking it was just Hoku’s alpha warrior blood flaring
NayaI felt uneasy as I drove to Danika’s house to pick her up for training. I wouldn’t say I liked that I snapped at Reed, but I also hated the predicament he and Theron put me in with Kamari. Not only that, but I felt anxious driving to training this morning for some reason. Sienna must have felt whatever was happening in the air, too, because she was shifty this morning.“Somethings coming, Naya, I can feel it,” Sienna confessed to me on our drive to the other side of town to Danika’s.“I know, I feel it too. But what”? I asked Sienna through our mind link.“You think Kamari has to do with the tension rising around town? I hate to admit it, but things have shifted since she came.” I knew Sienna liked Kamari like I did, but something was off with her timing in coming here. There was something she wasn’t telling us. Plus, we were werewolves, and the pack came first. Always.“I don’t know, she’s just a human, but even Theron acts strange around her. We’ll find out some answers today a
KamariI woke up Saturday morning to no alarm, so the sun was already beaming in the window when I finally opened my eyes. I gave myself a long stretch, enjoying not having to rush anywhere or do anything. I had the dance tonight, but the day was mine. Mom was sleeping all day since she had another night shift tonight. I sat up to see the white stray was still sleeping at the end of my bed. I moved over to scratch behind his ear and under his neck.“Still sleeping, huh? Lazy little kitty, you sleep a lot. I guess there’s something to people wanting to die and come back as a house cat.” The stray just purred, keeping his eyes closed, enjoying the pet. He rolled over onto his back, exposing his belly so I could reach under his neck better.“You have no collar, so I don’t think you belong to anyone. You could stay here for as long as you like. What do I call you, though? Hmm... what about Maxwell?” The cat looked at me in what I swore was a “hell no” look. “Ha, okay, no Maxwell. Maybe...
KamariWow, this place was gorgeous. I’ve been to some fancy clubs in LA, but this place put them to shame. Whoever was responsible for the decorations here needed to come to my house and fix the old girl up. Instead of the usual sitting area, they had white table-clothed tables with gorgeous floral centerpieces surrounded by glowing tea light candles. The ceiling had a massive crystal chandelier in the center of the dance floor, with little lights dangling out in a cascade across the ceiling. The lights were all dimmed, making the candles on the wall pieces stand out more.If I hadn’t known any better, I would have thought I was in an ancient castle’s ballroom instead of the school auditorium. I looked over at the dressed-up bar fed with candlelight to see a wall of delicate decanter bottles in front of a mirror. The bartenders were all dressed in suits, and the light reflected off the candles, turning it into an intimate landscape. I scanned the bar, admiring the attention to detail
NayaGrabbing Lana’s hand, I gave her a twirl around the dance floor like we were a ballroom dance pair, and it was our final move. We obnoxiously took a bow to each other, laughing, before heading back toward our table. Oh man, I was buzzed. Looking at our table full of empty glasses and beer bottles, I made a mental note to let Sienna take me home tonight. I’ll have to call an Uber for Kamari. Kamari...where was Kamari? I had kept tabs on her since I saw Theron and my brother staring at her all night. I felt protective of my new friend and knew that she couldn’t be either of their mates since she was human. I didn’t want her to get her heart broken, so I made sure to try and keep them at arm’s length from her. But looking around now, I couldn’t see Kamari anywhere. Come to think of it, I didn’t see Theron either.“LANA! Come help me find Kamari!” I yelled over the music. We were both stumbling around like fools. Lana started singing the next song, which I loved, too. As we looked, w
TheronZale and Zane let out a howl, alerting the crowd we’re set to run. The whole dance party howled back as one as we all began to shift and run out the door. Theron nodded to me with a pained look, like he was still assessing all that just went down.“You alright, bro?” I asked, feigning ignorance of what I just witnessed.“Yeah, just...drunk. You got me wasted, you asshole,” he said, punching me in the shoulder, acting light-hearted.“Well, let Hoku take over for a bit; I know Arkyn is chomping at the bit, trying to get out.” I laughed, pulling Theron to the door.“I’ll chomp you if you don’t let me out!” Arkyn pushed forward, shifting and sprinting out into the full moonlit night. Hoku flew past me a minute later, and we were off, sprinting and passing through the trees. We quickly caught up to the pack and took the lead in front of Thorac and Thorr, the twin wolves. You could hear howling echo through the forest as the pack ran as fast as we could, thriving in the moonlit night
TheronThis female. THIS. FEMALE. We had eyes on each other all night in a silent flirting game only we knew about. I couldn’t help the heat rise within me as I watched her dance with Danika. This female completely enraptured me, and I had no clue why. All Hoku and I knew was she was ours. When Reed whispered in my ear about her, it took everything in me not to rip his throat out. It wasn’t like me to be that way with Reed; I knew this. So I stood still, barely able to nod, keeping my eyes on her and not the fact that Reed was watching her, too. When I saw her walk outside, I followed her as if I had no say in my movements. I didn’t even care who else noticed me chasing after her.I waited a moment to see what she would do, silently praying she was a wolf and shifted right here in the moonlight. But she didn’t; instead, she just gazed as if she, too, was drawn to its light. I had no idea what to say once I got to her, but I knew I had to speak to her. I told the first thing I could th
OrionWhen I woke up to the sound of rain, snuggled up to the human girl, I could finally feel a little strength return to my body. I vaguely remember moving up to sleep by her last night when I felt her jolt in her sleep, but that was only vague. I had been slumped here on the human’s bed for days while I slept off the poison. I knew it would be a few more days till I could shift back into my humanoid form, not that it would matter when I could. I was sent here by the priestess herself with specific details.“Protect the human,” she demanded. “at all cost. Don’t let yourself be known to her, but keep an eye on her and get rid of whatever it was that’s infiltrated the wall.” She knew something was placed but needed to figure out what. The extra layer of protection on the house alerted her of something foreign just outside the boundary. How it got there to begin with was still being looked into. When I arrived, I cursed at the old braud and my luck. The Raven-clawed bush was covered in
The light of the day as it cascaded through the cave made her head pound more. She hated the sight. Spring was her least favorite season. All full of flowers and sunshine; it made her sick. Sitting on the cold, damp earth at least helped her find her bearings. She was still gathering her strength and her senses from when she teleported. It was a gamble; she had never done it before. She was only taught the spell in case she ever needed it in dire circumstances. Well, her daughter betraying her felt like a damn dire circumstance, one she would rectify once her strength came back to her. That girl was foolish to side with the weaker of her two sides. Her fathers blood would never overcome her Raven powers. Her daughters father... Zander. The name alone caused more pain in her chest than she felt like considering at the moment. She didn't even know she could feel such emotions anymore. Not since the first summoning all those years ago. Even her own mother's death didn't hurt quite like t
“Wait, what? Why?” With her now being a werewolf, we had discussed her staying here with the pack and her mate.“It won’t be long. I’ll be gone and back again within the month. I just need to settle everything with school and pack my things from my apartment to move here. Plus, I’d like to give my dad a heads-up. He’s been texting me worried since I haven’t gone to see him recently.” Sera’s dad was the only family she had left. Her mom had died giving birth to her, leaving her dad to raise her solo. I nodded my agreement.“I’m going with her,” Reed announced; I had expected him to want to go with her. Theron came and sat by my side, taking my hand in his while swirling his thumb inside my palm. I leaned into his warmth, laying my head against his shoulder."Are you sure you’re up for it, Reed?" Theron eyed his friend. I looked up at him. My expression must have shown the confusion I felt because Theron smiled before explaining.“With the Desert pack going silent with no word, I’m worr
As the morning sun rose, the birds chirped their morning song, signaling that the crisp, freezing winter was ending and spring was waking up. It had been two months since the battle of clans, with the pack busy repairing the town and healing its injured. Moriko sat outside on the porch in his white cat form, staring at the field that once held a great battle.I sat beside him, scratching behind his ear like an old habit, earning a purr from him. We sat silently for a moment, gazing at the peaceful morning sunrise. In the corner of my eye, I could still make out the black patch of ash that was Morana. It never lifted from the earth, like a scar.“Where will you go next?” I asked to break the silence.“I must return home to the Ostyn Clan headquarters. There is much to do and arrange now that the power has shifted to a new priestess, and the curse has broken. I am needed there to protect your mother.” Moriko had sadness in his voice; he had walked beside my grandmother for decades, ands
KamariShe was okay; she was bleeding, but Mother was going to be okay. I nuzzled her, overjoyed to see her again, letting loose some healing magic to knit Mom’s side up. Only she didn’t need my magic; she was already healing fast, which was new. She wrapped her arms around my neck and hugged me.“I knew you’d come, just in the nick of time, too.” She whispered to me. I nuzzled further into her, needing to feel her warmth and know she was okay. The sound of her scream before would haunt my dreams for days. I felt movement behind me; I turned out of my mother’s arms and moved protectively in front of her, watching Morana stand off with Verena.“Get out of the way, you stupid child!” Morana screamed at Verena’s wolf. The wolf held her ground, huffing air out of her snout.“What are you doing?! You’d choose them!? The ones that killed your father!?” a single tear escaped Morana’s eye as she spoke about Zander.“I’m doing this for you! So you can rule! Now get out of the way!!” The markin
KamariI was the wind and earth, I was lightning and fire. I ran into the fray with full abandon. I let the bond guide me to where Theron was fighting my Father. Snow stung my eyes as I dashed through the blizzard. As I ran toward him, I saw wolves stop to watch me run past them. They paused and stared before going back at it, battling the Phantom warriors and the animals of the forest that had joined the fight.A few light-colored wolves dared to run at me. I unleashed my fire on them in my wolf form, allowing Tala to mix her power with my Ostyn blood. Fire clashed with ice, creating water in my eyes from the raging snowstorm, and I lost track of what was real and what was magic. It almost looked like my magic formed through Tala as a bird of fire, tearing into the wolves as we fought with teeth and claws. A mountain lion leaped on the remaining wolf, fighting him off and giving me time to go to my mate.I still wasn’t 100 percent sure how I did it. I was running through the forest w
TheronDo you have any last words, pup? Zander spoke triumphantly into my head with death in his eyes. I mentally pushed on the bind the Raven had on me, trying with all my might to get free. She began to sweat with the pressure, but the bind held firm. Zander took a step closer than another. I moved my eyes to see the remaining warriors of our pack fighting viciously outnumbered but standing their ground.A wolf got through the Cadre’s barrier and slashed Dani down her side. She howled in pain, her blood staining the white snow beneath. Rune shot out off the ground, shifting in the air and throwing his wolf form at the wolf to get him away from his mate.It opened a hole in the barrier big enough for several enemy wolves and a few witches to break free and run towards the house. That was when the cat jumped through the busted door, attacking anyone near the opening. Alpha Zander had shifted back into his human form, unafraid of the vulnerability it put him in, and wrapped his hands ar
ReedIt was a fucking slaughterhouse. We were outnumbered three to one at least, and with everyone battling for the past several days, we were exhausted. The snow didn’t help either; it kept getting in our eyes, watering our vision, and making it hard to keep the focus on our opponent. Zander planned and executed this well. We would need a miracle to win this war. I swiped and killed mercilessly at the Desert Pack. From what I knew of the slave traders, they deserved nothing less.Where is he? Rune asked in my head. I looked to see him step up beside me in his human form with two broad swords. Rune had always enjoyed fighting with swords in battle and would often switch off between his wolf and warrior form “to ease the tension for both forms,” he had said. Rune was one of our most formidable warriors because he was so good in both forms and enjoyed both sides, sometimes a little too much. Where I would fight out of necessity, Rune fought for
ReedI stood staring at Ms. O as she worked her magic on Theron. At first, nothing happened. fear coursed up my spine when I saw the look on Ms. O’s face. She couldn’t hide the terror and sadness in her eyes. I couldn’t make out his heartbeat or even feel his presence for a split second. I dropped to my knees in shock, sitting there, helpless, beside his bed. This wasn’t happening, this couldn’t-Slowly, I saw Theron’s skin turn from ash to golden brown, and his breathing grew steadily. Without thinking, I burst out in laughter, a tear sliding down my cheek. My joy was short-lived when I heard slamming and hissing outside the room. Ms. O and I both looked at the door at the exact moment. I became alert immediately when Arkyn pushed to get out. He had been reeling the past few days, needing to fight and protect the pack battling outside these walls.“I’ll protect him. Go! Help them, save her, please.” The last
Izabele“NOOOOO! You can’t! You can’t sacrifice yourself like this!” I raged while I slammed my fist into the door that wouldn’t open. Whether it was her or the house that locked me in, I didn’t know, and I didn’t care; I was mad at both of them. I bellowed at the door, trying to claw my way out when someone interrupted me.“Umm, Ms. O...Ms. O? MS. O!” I turned to look at him with tear-stained eyes. He took a step back with his hands up, smart boy.“From the feel of her power, I-uh, think she can handle one witch, right? And-”“NO, she cannot. The High Priestess’s power comes not from fighting or battle spells but from healing. She is our greatest healer and greatest seer. She can see...She can see...she saw this. She insisted she came with me when I said I was coming here. She knew...” I trailed off, not wanting to say what I knew was coming next. Her words from a few day
