Chapter 83: A Sense Of Freedom

Thorne's POV

I healed faster than expected. Maybe it was because I had survived worse before. Maybe it was because I did not let myself be weak for too long. Whatever the reason, within weeks, I was healthy enough to be released from the hospital.

So, the release form was signed and I was gone.

On the morning of my release, a nurse came into my room with a large bouquet of lily of the valley flowers in her arms.

"There's no name on the card," she said, setting them down on the bedside table. "But whoever sent them clearly loves you very much."

I didn't need to know a name. I knew already.

Garrett.

I glared at the tiny white flowers, my jaw tight. Lily of the valley. But to me, it represented one thing and one thing only—Garrett's way of reminding me that he was still present. That he still had control over me, even now.

I grabbed the bouquet and tossed it into the trash can without hesitation. I did not want anything from him. Not his flowers. Not his at

  • Under The Mask Of My Enemy   Thorne’s Return

Chapter 84: Thorne's ReturnThorne's POVReturning to the FBI was going back to a world I had known all my life, yet now it was somewhat different. The same crowded hallways, the same constant hum of voices, and the same rigid schedule of daily tasks were all the same. But after everything that had occurred to me, I simply did not feel like the same man who had once walked these halls with assurance.I hadn't been assigned any cases yet. My bosses wished for me to have time to get settled, to acclimate to the environment again. I didn't object—I wasn't sure I was prepared to jump into anything heavy right away. So I spent my time reading case files, re-familiarizing myself with procedure, and doing physical training. The days were long, but they restored a feeling of purpose to me.At the end of the day, exhaustion set in, but it wasn't unwanted. It was a feeling of accomplishment. While I was preparing to depart, a group of my fellow agents inexplicably gathered around me, their eyes

Chapter 85: The One I LostGarrett's POVI sat in the darkness, the city lights casting faint glows against the windows. My whiskey glass was half-full on the table, the ice having dissolved long ago. I wasn't drinking it for the taste anymore—I just needed something to fill my hands, something to distract me from completely losing it.But it wasn't working. My screen glowed in the dark, the only light coming from the city outside my window. I stared at the photos on my screen, swiping through them one by one. They were all of him.Thorne.Every move, every glance, every damn thing he did—I had it on camera in these photos, being sent to me by the men I had posted around him. It was pathetic, but I couldn't resist. The first photo caught him entering the FBI building, dressed in working attire. He was the same but different all of a sudden. Stronger. Focused. Like he'd finally left the past behind him.Unlike me.The second photograph was of him at the gym, his body tense as he sparr

  • Under The Mask Of My Enemy   The Past That Won’t Let Go

Chapter 86: The Past Won't Let GoThorne's POVThe moment I walked into the FBI office that morning, I knew that it was going to be a long day.I had set myself to work, making use of all I had discovered about the Cullens, in starting the amassing of evidence against them. I had learned too much—too many secrets kept beneath the rug. And now I was going to put everything into practice and destroy them. Each document, each encoded email, each loose thread—I was going to tug at them until the whole empire tumbled. But I knew one thing for sure.Garrett would never allow that to happen without a struggle.I pushed the vision of him from my head and back to my screen. Hours flew by in a blur of documents and numbers, and before I could even consider it, the sun had dipped below the horizon.By the time I started to pack up my belongings, exhaustion weighed heavily in my limbs. As I walked out into the building, a voice called out behind me."Thorne, I'll take you home."I was confronted

Chapter 87: Severing BondsThorne's POVI knew Garrett was still watching me.Even though I had warned him to stay away, I could feel it. His presence lingered like a shadow Garrett wasn't the type to back down easily. And if he was still watching me, that meant he still had hope.I needed to crush that hope once and for all.So I did the only thing I could think of. I asked Gavin out.It wasn't serious. I knew that. I wasn't doing it because I was interested in him romantically. I was doing it to end things with Garrett once and for all. If he saw me with Gavin—if he thought I had really moved on—maybe he would finally leave me alone. That was the only reason. At least, that's what I kept repeating to myself.Dinner with GavinWe met at a quaint little restaurant in the city. It was not upscale, but the low lights and soft music gave it a private feel. Safe.Gavin arrived exactly on time, looking casual and upbeat. He wore a fitted white shirt with the top button undone, his sleeves

Chapter 88: Garrett's DesperationGarrett's POVThorne's words lingered in my mind, over and over again, like a horrible joke I couldn't shake off."I can’t fall in love with a person who deceived him like this. Why do you think I won't fall in love with Gavin anymore?"I had thought that nothing else could ever pain me more than the day he left, but this—this was worse.I. My head yelled at me to leave, to stop torturing myself, but my body refused. My eyes locked onto them—on Thorne and Gavin, sitting side by side at their table, laughing, talking, smiling. That smile. It wasn't tense. It wasn't false. He looked. happy. And that understanding sent a searing, anguished pain through my chest.I had seen Thorne smile before, but never like this. Not at me.My hands trembled as I grasped my glass, clenching it so tightly I was afraid it would shatter."He's only doing this to drive me away," I told myself. "He's trying to make me quit."But was he?The more I watched, the more I was co

  • Under The Mask Of My Enemy   A silent Battle

Chapter 89: A Silent Battle Garrett's POV I rested against my car, staring at Thorne's house, my head heavy with thoughts. The night was still, the only sound the occasional crunch of leaves in the cold wind. The sky was dark, only a few dim streetlights illuminating the empty street. But my eyes were trained on one thing—his window. I waited. Watched. Until finally, the light in Thorne's bedroom switched off. Only then did I exhale and drag a hand down my face, the fatigue finally catching up with me. Time to leave. But no sooner had I reached for my car door than a tap on my window halted me. I turned my head, and my already terrible mood worsened. Gavin. I rolled down the window slowly, my eyes dark and unwelcoming. "Get lost." My voice was low, anger contained. Gavin didn't so much as flinch. He didn't. Rather, he tilted his head to the side, looking at me with a quiet, calculating expression. "Relax, Garrett. I am just here to talk." I laughed shortly and sourly

  • Under The Mask Of My Enemy   Rejection

Chapter 90 - RejectionThorne's POVI stared at my computer screen, my jaw working in anger as I read the rejection letter for what felt like the umpteenth time. My on-site dispatch request had been denied. Again.A heavy sigh slipped from my lips as frustration mounted in my chest. How many times would they keep me back behind a desk, coddling me like fragile glass? I knew what they thought—that I wasn't ready, that my condition made me a liability in the field. But they were wrong. I wasn't weak. I had to prove it.Without hesitation, I got up from my desk and proceeded to my boss's office, knocking once at the door and then walking in. He looked up from his paperwork at me, his expression unreadable."I want to talk with you," I tried to state as calmly as possible. He put down his pen, resting back in his chair. "I assume it is regarding your application.".I nodded. "Sir, I need to be in the field. I can no longer sit behind a desk and watch other people do something. I know I ca

Chapter 91 : HelpGarrett's POVThe moment Thorne fell, a crystalline fear cut through me like a blade. I had been standing here watching everything from afar but unable to help myself. Seeing him fall, seeing the way his body fell, vulnerable and open, all else seemed to fade.I was at his side in seconds, my hands around his shoulders. "Thorne!" His flesh was pale, his breathing straining. I didn't waste another second. Ignoring the chaos around us, I wrapped him up in my arms. He was thinner than I remembered—had he been taking care of himself? The thought coiled something inside my chest. The drive home was tense. I held Thorne tight, the hand on my knee, one arm wrapped tightly around him supporting him against my body. He groaned out in his sleep, but what he said wasn't clear. His eyes drew up, fingers spasm-ing, as though trapped in an unpleasant dream. I could visualize what he dreamed about. As soon as I had reached my home, I called the doctor. • Under The Mask Of My Enemy   The Trap

Chapter 11”: The TrapLena’s POVThe silence in the room was suffocating. I stood frozen, my heart hammering against my ribs as I stared at Damian. His face was stone-cold, but his eyes burned with barely contained fury. Logan had just delivered the news—Bianca had taken someone.Someone close to me.I swallowed hard, my throat dry. My fingers curled into fists as I struggled to process it.“Who?” My voice came out hoarse.Logan hesitated, glancing at Damian before answering. “Mia.”A sharp pain shot through my chest. Mia. The only person who had ever been like a sister to me. The girl who had stayed by my side when no one else did. The thought of her in Bianca’s hands made my stomach churn.I took a shaky breath and turned to Damian. “We have to go. Now.”He didn’t answer immediately. His jaw was tight, his muscles tense as if he were barely restraining himself.“It’s not that simple,” he finally said.My eyes flashed with anger. “What do you mean? She has Mia! Are you seriously tell

  • Under The Mask Of My Enemy   We Do

Chapter One hundred and Nine : We DoThorne's POVThe hospital smelled of antiseptic and medication, something I'd gotten way too accustomed to in the last few days. But today didn't count. Today was special.Because today, I was taking Garrett home.I gripped the pen firmly in my hand as I signed the discharge papers. My hands trembled slightly, not from fear, but from something deeper—something that had been building inside of me since Garrett woke up.Relief.Sense of finality.New beginning. The nurse checked the papers from me, looking up with a warm smile. "All set. He can go home."I nodded, barely able to get the words out.I turned to confront the room, my heart pounding as I yanked open the door. Garrett sat on the edge of the bed, dressed already, his dark eyes fixed on me uncertainly."Sure you're ready to do this?" he asked, still a little raspy.I laughed a half-breathless laugh. "I signed the stupid documents, didn't I?"Garrett smiled. "Guess I shouldn't complain about

  • Under The Mask Of My Enemy   Hope

Chapter One hundred and eight : Hope Thorne's POVThe hospital room was quiet save for the constant beeping of the heart monitor. The dim light from the window gave a soft illumination to the bed, on Garrett's face—the face I had glared at for hours on end, full of anger, frustration, confusion. But now, I wasn't glaring at him with any of those emotions. Now, I was only full of hope.I had been sitting there for hours, my hands resting on the railing of the bed, my fingers occasionally brushing against his. He was warm, he was breathing, but he hadn't moved. Not yet.I breathed a shuddering breath and swept the hair out of my face, my muscles cramped from being in the same position for so long. I hadn't moved. Not even when the nurses told me I had to rest. Not even when my own exhaustion screamed at me to shut my eyes.Because what if I died, and he came around when I was gone? No. I wasn't going anywhere. My gaze wandered to his face—his hard face relaxed by sleep, his dark lashes

  • Under The Mask Of My Enemy   Desperate For A Chance

Chapter 107 : Desperate For A Chance Thorne's POVThe corridor of the hospital felt chillier than usual. Or maybe it was me—my body heavy, my heart heavier.Gavin stood before me with his face expressionless. There was no anger, no disappointment, just a calm resignation, as if he had already heard my response even before he asked me the question.I should have talked—talked to soften the rejection, to dissipate the tension. I had nothing.Gavin released a gentle breath, rubbing the nape of his neck. "I see," he said. "You don't have to tell me any more."I opened my mouth, hesitated, then closed it.But just as he turned to leave, he hesitated. His fist curled loosely at his side before he spoke once more finally."There's something you should know, though."His tone was level, but there was something in his eyes—a glint of something black, something that twisted my stomach into a knot of anticipation."Which?" I hedged.Gavin's eyes met mine. "The night I saved you… Garrett called

  • Under The Mask Of My Enemy   By His Side

Chapter 106: By His SideThorne's POVI didn't leave Garrett alone. Ever. The hospital room was cold, too white, too clean. The machines beeped softly in the quiet, a reminder he was still here, still breathing. But he wasn't awake. He hadn't moved since the operation, and that terrified me more than anything.I sat beside his bed, watching. His face was pale, lips dry. Bandages on his chest protruded from the hospital gown, harsh reminder that the bullet meant for me found home in him.I grasped his hand, hesitating before encircling it with my own. Cold to the touch, his skin seemed, and yet there was a warmth beneath, a testament that he clung on.You'd better wake up soon," I growled, my throat rough. "You can't just leave me like this."I pinned his hand down firmly, but he didn't react. The guilt was crushing.I had spent so much time hating him, blaming him, repelling him. And now that I should have protected myself, Garrett had stepped in front of that bullet. It ought to have

  • Under The Mask Of My Enemy   Ready To Change

Chapter One hundred and five : Thorne's POVThe prison gates slam shut behind me with a ringing crash, the sound echoing in my head as a final warning. I shuffle down the dimly lit corridor, my steps leaden, my mind reeling. Donovan's words still replay in my head, each one cutting deeper than the last."It was me. My intentional goading. I made sure you remembered."I flexed my fingers as I stepped outside, the crisp night air slapping my face. I set my teeth and breathed in deeply, but it did not help. Nothing would.I had despised Garrett for so long. I blamed him for everything—for my stolen past, for my confusion, for my suffering. But now? Now I realized the truth. Garrett had never actually been my enemy. He had been there, on the periphery of the Cullen family's crimes, but he was not like Donovan. He was not a monster. And yet, I had treated him as if he were.Guilt weighed on me like a leaden collar around my neck as I went to my car. My hands shook as I opened the door and

  • Under The Mask Of My Enemy   Secret Revealed

Chapter 104: Secret RevealedThorne's POVThe prison was cold. Not just from the thick concrete walls or the lack of sunlight coming in through the small, barred windows, but from what this place represented. It was where the damned resided, where the people who had crossed a boundary they could never return from. And now, Donovan was there.I trudged down the lengthy corridor, my boots clanging off the stone floor. Stagnant air, perspiration, and rusting metal greeted me as I passed cell after cell of inmates, ignoring the prisoners who yelled or slammed against their doors. I wasn't there for them. I was there for him.I halted when I reached his cell.Donovan sat on the metal bench, his hands resting casually on his lap. The moment he saw me, a smirk curled at his lips. He didn’t look like a man who had lost everything. If anything, he looked amused—like he had been expecting me.“Agent Thorne,” he greeted, his voice smooth, relaxed. “I was wondering when you’d come.”I didn't sit.

  • Under The Mask Of My Enemy   Plan To Resign

Chapter 103: Plan To ResignThorne's POVBlood. Too much blood. It oozed on my hands, saturated the fabric of my clothing, and ran on the unforgiving earth below me. I pressed tightly against Garrett's wound, but the blood streamed on through my fingers, searing and uninterrupted. My respiration was small, gaspy. This couldn't be happening. It was happening."Get him into the car! Now!" Donovan shouted above the bedlam, stern and urgent. His usual cockiness was gone. His face was pale and his eyes wide with something I never would have thought I would ever witness: fear. Donovan, never before, looked lost, like he had no control over anything. That alone made my stomach twist. If Donovan was scared, things were more terrible than I could have ever thought. The guys rushed, scooping Garrett's slumped body into the back seat of the black SUV. I climbed in behind them, holding on tight. My hands were wrapped around his wound, holding as much pressure as I could. His breathing was sporadi

  • Under The Mask Of My Enemy   Feelings

Chapter 102: Feelings Thorne's POVGarrett dropped in front of me, his form crashing onto the ground with a nauseating crunch. Time slowed down as I stood there rigid, observing the crimson pool of blood spreading on the ground, the dark red staining the pavement like a jesting reminder of all that had transpired to lead to this. My lungs froze as I breathed in, my body unable to move.I had waited years for this—to finally kill Garrett and to bring an end to the Cullen family. But now, standing over him, watching his blood seep into the ground, I felt no victory. No victory at all.Only a burning, intolerable pain.Garrett's breathing was shallow, his chest rising and falling in slow, irregular motion. His lips trembled as he tried to talk, and I found myself leaning forward, straining to hear what he would say."I'm sorry…"His voice was barely audible, little more than a whisper.I bristled. His eyes, cold and sharp as ever, were unfocused, filled with something indistinguishable.
