Derrick’s POV.
In the solitude and safety of my car, I leaned back and massaged my temples, trying to stave off the incoming headache. I barely made it past the paparazzi who ambushed me when I left the runway event with Jade in tow, and of course, the news of my stunt spread to my family even before it did to the local news.
On my phone, my grandmother was screaming in my ear, demanding that I apologize to Kara of all people about my ‘disgraceful conduct’.
“A marriage is a marriage regardless of the circumstances surrounding it, and I will not have a grandson of mine cheating on his wife with some model, especially one that tainted our family name like Jade Black did!”
“Grandma, it’s not like that,” I tried to argue. “Jade’s my friend, I was only helping her.”
“That is not what friendship looks like, Derrick. Even an old woman like me with vision problems can see it, much less this entire nation! Have you seen what the news is saying? You’re breaking that poor girl’s heart! I never thought you were raised to be this callous!”
“Oh, give me a break, grandma,” I scoffed. “I don’t have to apologize to Kara. She won’t care for it anyway.”
I mean, she was the one demanding a divorce from me, spreading rumors that I was an abusive cheater and painting me to be the bad guy every single time. She took pleasure in pissing me off and watching me lose control so she could play the victim. So why should I apologize to her?
“You’re even more of a fool than I thought if you actually believe that.” Grandma muttered, disappointment lacing her words.
“Why do you defend her like that, anyway? Every single time something happens, you always come after me. It’s never Kara’s fault. Sometimes I wonder if I’m your actual family, because you sure seem to care for her more than you do for me.”
My grandmother was quiet for a moment before letting out a sigh.
“You naïve, naïve boy,” I could imagine her shaking her head. “You have no idea, do you? Kara’s sacrificed everything for you, Derrick. Everything!”
“Kara’s a housewife because it’s her duty,’ I snapped, getting mad. “There’s nothing to applaud about it. Plenty of women do it without causing as many problems as Kara does. Why is she so special?”
For a moment, there was only silence on the other end of the line.
“You stupid boy,” Grandmother muttered. “I don’t care for your excuses. Fix this and apologize to Kara.”
“No,” I snapped, and hung up. I will not be apologizing to her, no way. Grandmother could be mad about it all she wanted. This was between me and Jade. Kara needed to keep her nose where it belonged, which was out of my affairs. Always trying to be the victim, that vile woman. Jade was the one who fell on the runway. It could’ve been a traumatic injury if I hadn’t been there, because the runway was narrow and pretty tall. Such a fall could’ve ended her career.
But grandmother didn’t care. All she wanted was for me to apologize to Kara.
I was so mad I’d have stuffed my phone in my pocket without thinking twice if not for the message alert I saw. When I opened it, I realized it was Jade.
‘Hey, Derrick! [heart emoji], I’m sorry to disturb you after everything, but the paps have found out where I’ve been staying, and they’ve swarmed the place. What should I do? I can’t stay here like this.’
Ugh, the vultures. They were the last thing Jade needed. I needed to get her out of there for her safety.
‘Don’t worry,’ I typed back to her. ‘I’m coming to pick you up. You can stay at my place; they’ll never find you there.’
‘Oh, that’ll be amazing, Derrick, thank you,' Jade texted back immediately. ‘I don’t want to be a bother, though. I’m really sorry about this too. I swear, I asked my agency to take care of it, and they promised to suppress the news, so I don’t know why this is happening.’
‘Don’t worry about it,’ I replied. ‘Get ready. I’m coming to get you in a minute.’

I knew that taking Jade to the house I had to share with Kara was not the smartest move on my part. But it was the safest place I could think of, where no one could bother her. When Kara and I first moved into the villa, I took every known security measure to keep us out of the media’s eye because we needed to keep our marriage a secret. So, the house had a state of art security system, a large garden and backyard coupled with tall walls that kept people from peeping, no neighbors within at least a mile of the villa and the villa was placed well outside city limits.
So, Jade was going to be safe. Kara might whine about it, but who cared for her? All she did was whine and complain, anyway. When she came back, I’d just ask her to get lost for a while or stay away from Jade’s sight. Maybe I’ll put her in a hotel. Jade’s comfort took priority.
But I didn’t have to say anything, because Jade didn’t ask any questions. She just said, “wow, this place is so secluded,” and that was it.
“So, you can pick any room you want. Every room except the master bedroom looks the same, of course, but they are decorated in a specific way by the…housekeeper.”
“Okay, how about this room then?” Jade asked, pointing at a room two doors below mine, and I nodded.
“Sure, you can,” I didn’t think much of it and threw the door open to let Jade in.
That’s when I realized the mistake I made.
I wasn’t home much, so I didn’t know which room Kara moved into after she refused to share the master bedroom with him. Because every door looked the same from the outside, I couldn’t really differentiate one room from the other.
But once we were inside, it was clear whose room this was. The art on the walls was a dead giveaway, as were the cream-colored bedding and the warm-toned walls, and there was a familiar journal on the desk. The bed was still unmade from the last time she lay there, and there was some blood on the floor from when she injured her foot by stepping on glass.
“Oh, I adore this room, it’s so quaint!” Jade squealed, turning around and taking in the furnishings. “It’s just my vibe. But it looks lived in, thought. Are you hosting a guest here?”
“Y-yeah, but it’s no one important,” I assured her. Kara could have another room.
“Will they be okay with me taking this room? I don’t want to put someone out.”
“No, no of course not,” I smiled at her. “When my guest comes back, I’ll get them clear out their belongings and you can have this room. Jade, you’re welcome to stay here for as long as you want.”
Kara’s POV.I hoped that Derrick would be away with Jade when I came home, so I could have a few moments of peace. So, imagine my surprise when I walked into the living room of our villa and discovered that the living room was trashed. My clothes, shoes, makeup, skin-care products, books, and jewelry were all over the place, haphazardly placed on the couches, chairs, and even the floor, along with various boxes that held everything from my life before marriage, including my art products and physical art.Almost everything that had been in my room when I left for the hospital, except for the few art pieces I dared to hang on the walls, was all there. As soon as I realized this, every nerve ending in my body lit up in anger. Only two people lived in this villa, and that was me and Derrick. So, if I hadn’t done this, Derrick had. What had he done?! Why had he cleared my room? Was this his way of telling me to get out because I told him that I’d divorce him?!I stormed to my bedroom, hopi
Kara’s POV'Kara, I forgot Jade’s gift. Get it to me ASAP!'Derrick’s text came in the evening, worded in such a way that I had no choice but to do as I was told. Normally, Derrick had his personal assistant do that, but apparently, Derrick tended to forget that. The demanding nature of the text made me mad, more than usual, and what he asked me to bring him humiliated. I was so done with him. Especially considering how I deliberately tried to get out of it. Derrick was even happier that I chose to stay behind.Because Jade Black would be there, hanging onto my husband's every word. Jade, Derrick's first love and college girlfriend, came back to town two weeks ago. Since then, Derrick has seldom been around our mansion, and every day he spent away, I knew exactly where he was and who he was with. The whole thing hurt, even though I tried to tell myself that it didn't matter. I tried for years to win Derrick's love before realizing that it was only a delusion. It was heartbreaking, b
Kara’s POVThere were mocking whispers all around me when I left the Ballroom.I wrapped my wound up by ripping up my own dress, which sucked, but I couldn’t bleed all over the hotel. Everyone glared at me as I left, probably thinking what a bad person I was.Everyone thought I was just another girl who was trying to seduce Derrick to have a go at his money. A gold digger. Derrick’s behavior did nothing to refute that, despite being married to me, even in secret. It took a toll, having so many people hating me, and having them think I was the worst person alive.I tried to be bold and stand up to myself, because I knew the truth. But with the marriage being a secret, there wasn’t much I could do.I got a taxi and went to the hospital, still wearing drenched clothes. The nurses at the hospital were kind enough to give me a spare pair of scrubs to wear home and dress my wound. These days, strangers treat me with more kindness than my so-called friends and family did.As I got my wound s
Kara’s POV.When I came home, it was still afternoon, and frankly, I was exhausted even though all I had done that day was get injured. So, without much thought, I decided that I deserved a break. I'd long since stopped trying to share a bed with Derrick and moved to a guest room where I could spend the night sleeping. So, after coming home, I went to my room, took my painkillers, and fell asleep, trying not to think about Derrick, Jade, and how much the whole thing hurt. But unfortunately, I couldn't sleep for long. "...it was completely unnecessary for her to make such a scene, when I asked her multiple times not to be such a nuisance, but does she listen?"It was Derrick, yelling his head off, and I knew that I couldn't just hide in my room to avoid him. He would actually burst into the room to harass me, and I didn't want him to taint the safety I found in my room. Of course, I could lock the door, but that would only lead to an escalation. Derrick's POV.The way Kara just exploded took me aback.I was already feeling a little queasy about how much she was bleeding. I genuinely did not want to injure her that badly, but the broken glass was just there, and Kara, as usual, made me the worst person in existence with her attitude. I never got as mad as I was whenever she was around, opening her mouth and spitting things that nobody could find sane. So, Jade and I were both shocked by the blood when Kara yelled at us to get out. I've never seen her that furious, never heard her voice be that thunderous. Kara was a fierce woman who always stood up to herself, even when she was trying to win my heart. She never allowed herself to be disrespected unless she had no choice in it. I disliked her immensely, bordering on hate, but it was the truth. Kara was fiery and bold, with a cutting sense of humor that had started to get crueler throughout our marriage. Still, it surprised the hell out of me when she screamed at me like that
Kara’s POV."Ms. Hatchett, I have got to ask you a question, and I'd really appreciate it if you answered me honestly. For your own wellbeing," the nurse who was treating my hand said, and I looked at her in puzzlement. "Yes, of course."The nurse looked nervous. Although I was at the same hospital I went to for my ankle, the nurse was different."According to your record which we had to look at, you were here this morning for a serious wound, and your nurse mentioned an altercation in the corridor," the nurse said. "And now you're here again. So, Ms. Hatchett, I really have to ask you this. How is your home situation? Is your husband rough on you?" "What?!" I was taken aback. "I’m not married; Derrick’s not my husband." The nurse looked sad. "Well, hon, you came to the hospital twice a day, and you’re wounded with bruises on your wrist like someone grabbed it hard. I’d be giving what he wanted, anyway. The surprise only lasted a moment before Derrick grew livid. Within moments, he moved from across the room to right in front of me and grabbed my arm. His grip was hard as if it were made from steel, and the wrath in his eyes was frightening.“You have no right to demand a divorce from me,” he spat through gritted teeth, making spittle land on my face. “You’re going to stay by my side forever, and serve me until your pathetic, useless life ends, do you understand?!”His grip was too tight, and pain shot up from my wrist. Behind me, the nurse was panicking while Derrick’s assistant was doing her best to keep her from calling the police on us. “Let me go!” I demanded, trying not to yell. “Let me go, right now, Derrick, before I do something I regret.”“Something you regret? Derrick’s POV.“Who does that no-good gold-digger think she is?!” I shouted, kicking my desk chair as hard as I could. A shiver of savage pleasure ran through me as it went and hit the glass. We’re in the office building sir, everyone’s looking at us!” my assistant called from my door, where she was cowering, afraid to come in.“Shut up!” I snarled at her. “Do I look like I give a shit? Kara’s POV.It took me three days to get out of the hospital, because they were worried about me having two different wounds on the same leg, which increases the chance of infection. It was quite sad that those three days were the first time since I married Derrick that I felt taken care of.And it was the first time in three years that I took a break from being a housewife. But after three days, it was over. While I wasn’t excited to go back to life with Derrick again, I was pretty tired of being bedridden and eating hospital food.Thankfully, though, Derrick’s assistant Theresa, came to see me almost daily. At first, I thought she was there under Derrick’s orders. In fact, she felt very guilty for letting Derrick treat me like he did, and she wanted to make amends. I didn’t really trust her, but Theresa never had a reason to dislike me, and Derrick treated her badly. Maybe she could relate to me in that manner. Maybe she was actually telling me the truth. Who knew? But she got me my
