The atmosphere seemed denser, as if the forest was pausing in silence. Lucian’s hold on my arm remained tight, despite my eyes being locked onto Dahlia at the forefront of the opposing wolves.

"She wouldn't..." I murmured, but the words had a flavor of ash. Dahlia had abandoned us, betrayed us, and now she was returning with them.

"She has, indeed," Lucian replied, his tone somber.

"She’s motioning for them to strike," Kai yelled from behind us. His visage was marked with grime and blood, his weapon trembling in his grip.

“She's unsure,” I contended, holding onto the fragment of hope I was reluctant to acknowledge was fading.

“Then you aren’t as familiar with her as you believe,” Lucian retorted.

A deep growl emerged from the wolves behind Dahlia, with their leader poised for her instruction. Dahlia lifted a hand, indicating for them to maintain their location.

“What should we do?” I inquired, glancing between Lucian and Kai.

“We battle,” Lucian stated plainly.

The icy water tugged at my arms and legs while I fought to get to the top. My chest throbbed, and every motion felt like I was struggling against the burden of the universe. I managed to break through, panting for breath. “Daisy!” Lucian's voice pierced through the noise in my ears. I blinked the water from my eyes and noticed him only a few feet distant, gripping a sharp rock. "I'm doing well!" I yelled, choking. I was not okay. My whole body felt as though it had been crushed by the fall. Kai splashed close by, flicking water from his hair like an annoyed wolf. “Next time, can we avoid creating an escape plan that requires jumping off cliffs?” Lucian gave him a glance. "Would you rather be ripped apart by shadow wolves?" Kai began to speak in response, but I interrupted. “Keep it.” "We must proceed." The cliff loomed over us, while the enemy wolves remained mere silhouettes in the distance. Dahlia was not present. "She's up to something," I remarked, feeling a knot in my stom

"Could we manage to have five minutes without being pursued, cursed, or lectured on prophecy?" I sighed in exasperation. "Unlikely." "Let's go." I wasn’t even certain I was inhaling. “It’s finished, sister.” Dahlia’s voice resonated in my thoughts like an eerie tune. She was all around, her voice, her influence, her strength. And I? I was caught. Once more. “Daisy!” Lucian's voice hit me like a punch, slicing through the fog. All at once, brightness pierced the obscurity. My lungs surged to life, and I gasped for a quick, stinging breath. I gasped as I opened my eyes. "At last!" Kai's face loomed above me, reddened and agitated. “You are living.” "I believed we had lost you." I sat up, moaning as the ache in my body overwhelmed me. My arms felt as heavy as metal. My head ached. All around, the camp was a frenzy, flames roaring, fighters yelling, the atmosphere heavy with the iron odor of blood. "What occurred?" My voice was raspy. Like a storm, the shadows closed in. My vision was blurry. I was having trouble breathing. "Daisy!" The roar of Lucian's voice came from a distance. In an attempt to navigate the dense, whirling blackness, I turned to face him. However, it was useless. The shadows of Dahlia had a life of their own and wound themselves about my feet like snakes. Suffocatingly cold, they pulled at me. Her voice then broke through the commotion. Easy. managed. "Sister, why resist it? This is our power. To you. There was something old and shaky in me that her words tugged at. I gave a headshake. "You're not correct!" A glimmer of light broke through the darkness.
