In a faraway land, hundreds of miles away from Lunaria, a white haired man jerked awake from a trance.
He was within a cave, sitting cross-legged, whispering incoherently. His eyes were closed, a slight frown marring his white brows. There was a black book opened before him, the pages flipping wildly. He had gone into a trance minutes ago, whispering dark spells, drawing dark matter from the book before him. Behind him were his servants, watching him, dressed in identical black cloaks. Occasionally, they would whisper among themselves, while stealing furtive glances at their leader. Around the interior of the cave was a shallow pool of water, flowing in an endless circle. The walls of the cave were carved with intricate designs and ancient drawings. The floor was littered with what looked like human bones, and a part of the cave was stained with something red and faded, something which looked like blood. "Master has been in that trance for almost an hour." One of the servants whispered to his partner. "Do you think we should awaken him, Thad?" "That would be a bad idea, Cinred." The second man, Thad, shook his head, equally whispering. "This is the only chance he might get to find the location of the Moonstone. Besides, you know how furious he gets when we disturb him." "But I thought the Moonstone was destroyed years ago." Cinred argued. "After the battle master had with the Blackthorn twins, the Moonstone was destroyed, never to be found again." "That's not entirely true." Thad replied. "The Moonstone is extremely powerful. It can't be destroyed so easily. There's a prophecy that says the Moonstone will be reborn, and someone will be chosen to find it." "Who?" "I don't know. But the prophecy says the person shall bear a very special mark, and this mark would lead him to the location of the Moonstone. It has been years, and no one has heard of such a person. So this is the only chance master has. To try to find the Moonstone using dark magic." "What if the Moonstone hasn't been reborn?" "I think it has, and master knows this. Which is why he has to find out where it is before someone else does." The two servants continued their discussion in low tones when suddenly, the water from the pool began to ripple. A bright glow shot out from it, brightening up the cave. The ripples became stronger until it rose in a large wave. An eerie groan sounded from the cave and the walls shook. Debris clattered to the ground, and the light glowed brighter. Suddenly the water from the cave erupted in a massive wave, and at the same time, the white haired man snapped out of his trance. "The Keeper lives." He whispered, his eyes wide opened. The chaos in the cave heightened as he whispered those words. The light glowed brighter, the wave of water crashed violently against the cave walls. The eerie groaning echoed all around, until it seemed the cave would collapsed on them. And then, just as quickly as it started, it ceased. The water subsided and became calm. The light dimmed out and the cave ceased its trembling. The man shot to his feet and glared at the black book in front of him. His eyes, a striking shade of blue, were filled with disbelief and bewilderment. Cinred and Thad who had cowered away during the chaos, moved forward tentatively. "Master Cedric, did you find the location of the Moonstone?" Cinred asked. The master, Cedric, raked his gaze over him. "I found something more disturbing." He uttered, his voice raspy and hoarse, like it came from the depths of the earth. "I found the Keeper." "The Keeper?" Thad exclaimed. "Master, I thought the Keepers went extinct years ago." "One of the Keeper's descendant has been born. She has the mark on her palm." Cedric growled. "I saw it. This is the key we've been missing. She is the key." "The Keeper is... a girl?" Cinred uttered, exchanging shocked looks with Thad. Cedric whirled around and glared at the pool Then he lifted his hands, shut his eyes and breathed in. When he opened his eyes again, the pupils had gone totally dark. He began to chant loudly, strange ancient words which grew louder with each utterance. The water from the pool began to swirl and suddenly, an image appeared on it. He stared at her intently, his eyes slowly turning furious. Because now that he knew she had the mark of the Keeper, he would have to find her and use her to find the Moonstone. He had searched for the artifact for hundreds of years, and now he was so close. He couldn't afford to fail. As he glared at the girl, two other figures suddenly appeared beside her. He couldn't make out their faces, but he could tell they exuded raw power and dominance. He frowned, wondering why they stood beside her that way. Unless... Realization suddenly dawned on Cedric. These men were... protecting her. They were protecting the Keeper. He wished he could see the face of the girl clearly, but even with his dark magic, it was impossible. He could only conjure up images from his visions or dreams, and the girl's face had been hidden even in his vision. Trust the universe to send a protector to the Keeper, the only one who would lead him to the Moonstone. But this didn't deter him. He would find her, and find the Moonstone, and destroy whoever dared to stand in his way. The water rippled again, and the image disappeared. Turning around slowly, he scowled at his servants. "We have a lead." He said. "As long as the Keeper has been born, the location of the Moonstone will remain hidden. She alone can find out where it is." "What do we do now, master Cedric?" Thad asked. "Find her." Cedric snarled. "Search every pack and every town. Turn the entire realm over if you have to, but find this girl before anyone else does." "Yes master." Cinred and Thad nodded and bowed. "The time we have been waiting for has come." Cedric continued. "With the Moonstone in my possession, I will finally have my revenge on the ones who cursed me to be this way. This realm will be mine, and I will wreak a terrible havoc on every single soul." He turned away from the pool suddenly and made his way to the deeper part of the cave, where a large hole had been carved out from the ground. Below were piles of dead bodies, decayed and rotted beyond recognition. "Soon my army of the undead will rise." He continued, his eyes gleaming with malice. "And I will take over this realm, beginning from the kingdom of Lunaria."The tension between Kendrick and Kaiden exploded the next day. That morning, Kendrick carefully rose from the bed, not wanting to wake Astrid who was still sleeping beside him. The air was chilly, and he pulled the blanket up to her shoulders to keep her warm. Then he stood beside the bed, watching her sleep for a while. The ghost of a smile lifted his lips and he pulled the blankets higher. Mine. The word echoed in his head. She belonged to him, and he'd be damned if Kaiden thought they would share her. He didn't care what the moon goddess had been thinking when she paired them with one mate, but one thing was clear. He wasn't sharing. He leaned down and kissed her cheek, brushing back a thick lock of hair from her face. Then he left the room and gently shut the door behind him. Now that Astrid would be staying at the mansion, he had to call back his guards. After Kaiden left a year ago, he had receded into a thick shell of isolation. Astrid tore through the forest in blind fear, her arms pumping beside her, her feet carrying her farther away from Iron Claw Pack. Night had come, and the forest was bathed in the gentle glow of a full moon hanging low in the sky. Her breath came out in harsh pants, her chest burning with exhaustion. She cast a quick look behind her, her emerald eyes darting frantically, searching for her pursuers. She saw no one, but her ears caught the heavy pounding of paws on dirt and leaves, sending a thrill of alarm through her veins. The Alpha must have sent his lycans after her, to capture and bring her back. Whimpering softly, she increased her pace. If she could just get to the borders of the pack, she would be able to disappear without a trace. Thinking about her predicament now, she regretted not escaping yea
Kendrick jerked awake suddenly and sat up. He scanned his bedroom, searching for what had roused him from sleep. He was alone. Running his palm across his face, he rose from the bed and flicked his hair away from his eyes. He was shirtless, and perspiration dripped down his hard chiselled torso. Cursing softly, he walked towards the window and stared into the dark sky. A full moon stared back at him, teasing him with its silvery glow, reminding him of yet another night without his mate. His twin brother Kaiden, who left Lunaria a year ago, had never bothered to return. Kendrick hated to think of the day Kaiden left, because it brought back bitter memories. After the death of their parents, they were both crowned the Alphas of Lunaria, the largest and most powerful werewolf kingdom in the realm. Kendrick remembered how sweet his childhood was. He and Kaiden had been inseparable, promising each other to rule Lunaria together, without any rivalry. They were the perfect Alphas for L
Kendrick arrived at Lunaria hours later. It was still dark outside. He didn't want to draw attention to himself and his mate by going through the front doors. Instead, he used the window. He held Astrid tight against him and leaped. Landing easily on the terrace, he quietly stepped into his room. She was still unconscious, and this worried him. He laid her gently on the bed and brushed her hair away from her face. She was so pale, so still. He left her for a moment and entered the bathroom. Seconds later, he returned holding a small bowl of water and a washcloth. He lay beside her, resting his weight on his elbow and dipped the cloth into the water. Gently, he wiped off the dirt on her face, neck and cheeks. His nose wrinkled in distaste when he took in the state of her dress. It was an ugly grey sac, and the hard material had bruised her skin in several places. He wondered the kind of life she must have had. Why did Kael send those men after her? Did she try to escape from him?
Kendrick came awake instantly. His eyes shifted to ruby red hues, his lips peeled back. Canines emerged as he scanned the room for threats. When he noticed Astrid was trying to get away from him, he immediately put a leash on his beast. Astrid was still shrieking, scrambling away from the bed. The sheets tangled around her ankles and she tripped, landing hard on the floor. In a second, she was on her feet, cowering away from Kendrick. "Who are you?" She yelled. Kendrick lifted his hands, trying to show her he wasn't a threat. "I'm not going to hurt you. I just need you to calm down...""Don't tell me to calm down." Astrid screamed at him. "Where the hell am I? Who are you?" When Kendrick tried to take a step towards her, she grabbed the nearest object she could find, a bread knife, and pointed it at him. "Stay away from me, you vile beast!" She finally untangled her legs from the sheets and kicked it away. Her movements were so awkward and amusing that Kendrick couldn't help c
"Mine." Kaiden whispered, stepping closer to Astrid. His eyes had taken a deeper shade of red, hot and intent on her. That single word hit Kendrick in his guts. It couldn't be, he thought. The moon goddess wouldn't dare pair them to one mate. But as he stared at his twin, he knew he was right. They shared the same mate. Astrid looked on in bewilderment, unable to form a word. How could she, when she just realized she was mated to two brothers? Was the moon goddess playing a joke on her? Just as Kaiden reached out to touch her, Kendrick stepped forward, shielding her with his body. "Don't you dare put your hands on her." He growled. Kaiden's eyes refocused and he scowled at his brother. "Get out of my way, Kendrick. I have a right to touch her just as much as you do.""You're wrong." Kendrick shot back. "You have no right to her, not after what you did. Go back to where you're coming from. Lunaria is much better off without you.""I'm not going to stand here and exchange words w
Astrid stared at her wounded hand as she tried to stop the bleeding. Some of the blood had spilled onto the white shirt she had on, and she knew she had to find something to wrap the shallow cut. She hadn't been thinking straight when she cut her palm, hadn't realized that she had no ability to heal. She had been so caught up in her attempt to stop Kendrick from fighting with his brother. A soft knock sounded, drawing her attention towards the door. "Who's there?" She asked. "It's me." Kaiden deep voice sounded from the other side. She knew it was him the second she heard his voice. "Please, can I come in? I just want to tend to your wound." Sighing softly, she looked away. Might as well let him treat her wound, she thought. It was beginning to hurt, and she didn't want to get blood on the sheets. "Come on in."The door opened and Kaiden stepped inside, holding a small box. He gently shut the door behind him and moved towards her. Astrid stared up at him, awed at how much he lo
