Nineteenth years later, Dede Mensah and her friend Julia, arrived in the States to seek better opportunities in life.
“Oh my God, this place is amazing. I can’t believe we are here,” Julia squealed with happiness as she squeezed the hand of Dede as the plane touched down.
“Our lives will change for the better in this new place. There are lots of opportunities and I heard the money here is good. Here we can be all we dreamed of. You can get into the modelling industry easily here,” Julia said with excitement and Dede amidst her fears tried to smile.
Dede sat next to Julia frightened like her life was over recalling the feel of suspending in the air for hours, the speed of the plane at takeoff and now the landing feel. She just wanted to get out of this frightening metal bird. Julia on the other hand, didn’t have much of a problem on the flight as back in Ghana she travelled to Kumasi in a plane multiple times.
They soon stepped out of the plane and the cold weather hit them as they walked towards the checking point. Dede looked around her new environment surprised they were indeed out of Ghana and in a different country. They walked into the checkpoint and there were so many flags of different countries. The place was big and there were so many people going about their business. Dede’s eyes caught a TV showing the news. She focused her attention on the TV because of the image of the handsome man behind the newscaster. She read something about a new partnership deal signed by someone called; Bryson Adams. The name was displayed at the bottom of the TV screen.
“Okay, now what do we do?” Julia asked drawing Dede’s attention away from the TV and the man that seemed to have caught her attention.
After doing much reading of the signs and following in the direction of where those they have arrived with went, they soon find themselves going through the necessary checkpoint. It was late and they left Ghana the previous day, in the evening. Dede recounted the day, the news of their trip came to her.
A couple of weeks back
It was a Saturday, Dede was up and cleaning the room while her friend Julia was out to buy some porridge from the street for breakfast. Dede was humming a popular Nigerian song, Buga won.
Dede stayed indoors and only came out when it was necessary. She cleans the house and does the cooking while Julia goes to work and brings home money for the running of the house. This arrangement seemed to work perfectly for the two and they were happy."Dede, I didn't get your favourite doughnut today," Julia said as she entered the room. "But I came bearing good news," she added and Dede was suddenly excited.
"You remember the US visa lottery you took part in the last time?" Julia reminded and Dede waited anxiously for what Julia would say next. "You won and my boyfriend had also secured a visa for me. We are both going to the US," she screamed excitedly.Dede screamed and they both jumped excitedly in celebration.
"There, we will be able to make a lot of money and take care of ourselves," Julia said.
"But do you know where we will be staying?" Dede asked.
"Don't worry, my boyfriend has already taken care of our accommodation. He has an apartment in town. In the US. We will stay there. It will be easy to become a model and earn lots of money for yourself," Julia squealed.
Back to the present"Is there an AC or opened fridge somewhere?" Dede asked hugging her body and Julia couldn't answer as she was feeling very cold herself.
Dede had her small backpack behind her and Julia struggled to pull her bag as she felt she was freezing. They managed to drag themselves through the checkpoints and were again out at the mercies of the weather.
"Hi," greeted a tall man wearing a long coat with a beanie cap and a scarf which almost covered half of his face leaving just the top of his nose and eyes showing.
Julia and Dede exchanged glances before staring back at the man who had extended his hand for a handshake. Dede shook his hand first and Julia was next to shake the man's hand.
"You must be Julia," the man said and the side of his lips curled up when he took the scarf off so they could see his face. "I must say you are more beautiful in person than in pictures," he said flirtatiously and Julia smiled recognizing him.
"Brian?" Julia squealed and the man smiled.
Julia hugged him excitedly and quickly introduced Dede.
"Dede, this is my boyfriend, Brian Jackson," Julia introduced and Dede shook his hand again and managed a smile with her hoodie covering her head.
"Okay, let me take you girls home," Brian said and led them to his parked SUV helping Julia with her bag.
Julia was wearing an up-to-knee-level pink skirt with a knife pleat from the hip down and a V-neck white blouse with three-quarter sleeves. She was bursty and with the V-neck blouse, her chest was a little exposed. She had on black 2-inch ankle strap sandals. Dede on the other hand, wore loose blue jeans with a black loose T-shirt. She wore her hoodie over this and had a white Snickers on. She dresses like this to hide her figure which always seems to give her trouble.
"What were you girls thinking wearing clothes like this? It is winter. Very cold," Brian said as he opened the car door for Dede to sit in the front and Julia to the back seat with him. The driver put the bags in the boot and soon they were off to Brian's apartment.
Dede sat next to the driver who immediately closed the divided knowing the kind of person his boss was. Brian wasted no time in kissing Julia in the back seat as soon as the divider was closed. He slipped his hands under Julia's dress and Julia for some crazy reason allowed him to take her in the back seat. The heater in the car was on so Dede started feeling hot. She removed the hoodie. Her long black waist-level hair was braided in a French braid style. The driver kept stealing glances at the the beauty sitting next to him occasionally while Dede on the other hand looked outside the window admiring her new environment where she believed her life would be changed for the better. The driver knowing what was going on behind the divider, turned on the stereo filling the car with music. The car finally came to a stop driving into a compound and parked inside the garage. He knocked on the divider and got down from behind the wheel. Dede got down next and Julia got out of the car adjusting her hair and clothes. Brian was next to come out of the car and stood behind Julia who was standing next to the opened door trying to fix her clothes. Dede had her back turned to the two as she admired the garage.
"Wow!" Brian thought staring at the back of Dede.
Her long braided hair freely hanging behind her. Despite the big size dress she was wearing, her small waist and broad hip which gave her the perfect curvy body of a model was slightly visible as she had her hand on her waist. Her light bronze skin tone was just amazing.
"Dede, come for your bag," Julia said as she headed for the car boot.
Dede turned in the direction of Julia's voice and Brian froze for a moment staring at the face of Dede. In the light and without her hoodie on, her beautiful face was in clear view and her blue eyes which gave her that seductive look were out in the open and Brian couldn't help be get lost in her unique beauty. Her crazy long lashes, plump pink lips and the perfect shape of her face left Brian in a daze. He could already imagine himself kissing her lips and stripping her off her clothes to have a feel of her body.
Dede walked past Brian whose gaze was locked on her and she managed a smile. She quickly put on her hoodie and covered her head. She grabbed her bag from Julia who had managed with the help of the driver to get the two bags out of the car boot. Brian snapped out of his moment walking the two ladies into the apartment. He showed them to their rooms even though there were servants there to do that. He asked Julia to take a shower and she understood why. They were busy in the car. While Julia was in the shower, Brian went into Dede's room.
"I hope you like your room?" Brian said and Dede smiled turning to find Brian standing at the entrance to her room.
"Yes, please. Thank you," Dede appreciated standing still.
"Has anyone told you, you are very beautiful?" Brian said going straight to the point, closed the door behind him and walked towards Dede.
Dede took a couple of steps back maintaining a good distance between them and immediately became uncomfortable with the way Brian was staring at her. She recalled a similar situation happening with Julia's ex-boyfriend when they were back in Ghana. Julia had rescued her back then. Brian had that same look in his eyes.
Dede took a step back as Brian tried to close the gap between them not sure what to do. She thought men in the States would be different.
"Why is this thing still happening? Am I cursed?" Dede thought as she tensed up not sure if the man would attack her or not.
"Dede?" Julia called out and both Brian and Dede's attention shifted to the door as they both heard footsteps approaching.
"Dede," Julia called out and both Brian and Dede's attention shifted to the door as they both heard footsteps approaching. "Now, you don't want to create any confusion. Just in case she asks of me, tell her you have not seen me. Do you understand?" Brian said and entered the bathroom leaving Dede to answer the door. "Dede," Julia called out again, standing in the corridor not sure which door leads to Dede's room. Dede walked to the door and opened it to find Julia in the corridor. Julia entered admiring the room. Dede smiled but was trembling inside knowing Brian was in her bathroom. "Your room is very nice," Julia admired and sat on the bed. "I am so excited we are here. Now we need to find ourselves jobs and get a better living," she said and Dede managed a smile still standing in the middle of the room, just a distance away from the door. "Dede, are you alright?" Julia asked with a frown. "Why do you look like you have seen a ghost?" she added. "Er, am.." Dede stammered as she
She moved the knife to her other cheek to give herself another cut. She intended to give herself multiple scars on her face. She knew by doing this, she may never get the job as a model because all the models she had seen in the magazines had flawless skin and now she is giving herself scars."Ms, what are you doing," screamed Kate startling Dede who suddenly dropped the knife in her hand as her gaze shifted to the opened door.Kate entered and walked up to her. Dede took a step back but Kate caught up with her and was surprised to see the blood on her face. "What are you doing?" Kate asked but Dede could not speak and her eyes were rather filled with tears threatening to fall. "Whatever you are going through, harming yourself is not a solution. It would rather give you more problems. Every problem has a solution," Kate said sounding like she was scolding Dede. "Look, I don't know what your problem is but I can assure you what you are doing now is not a solution," Kate said."What d
Dede was wondering what was wrong with him. Meanwhile, Julia was back in the apartment exploring her new environment. Back at the hotel, Dede was pinned against the wall trapped in between Brian's arms who had his lips on her neck. "Can I take a shower first?" Dede requested. Brian raises his head to look at her face. He stared at Dede for a while and leaned in to kiss her but she quickly turned her head away and Brain ended up kissing her ears instead. "Sure, take a shower, my seductress. I will wait for you," Brain groaned and took a step back freeing her from his grip. Dede ran into the bathroom and quickly closed the door behind her. She placed her hand on her chest trying to calm herself down. She was scared thinking of what was about to happen. She looked at the bathroom and it was a bathtub with a faucet sprout and so many knobs lined up on the walls. She didn't know what controls what. She ignored it and only thought of a way to get out. She thought she could accept Brian'
Dede was happy and she thanked the manager unaware of how she would be dressed while serving strangers in the restaurant. As requested, Dede went to see the HR who had already been informed by the manager that she was coming to see him. "Ah you must be Dede," came the voice of a man. "Yes, please," Dede responded excitedly "What you are going to do is not difficult. You will be waiting on tables. I will give you two tables for a start," the man said. "Sit down," he said standing up from behind his desk. Dede sat down on the chair in front of the desk. The man continued to talk with one hand in his pocket as he paced up and down his office. "All you need to do is. If you see anyone sitting at that table, you attend to them. It is that simple. Take their orders and serve them," he said and tossed a book onto the table startling Dede. He slammed his hand on the table and stared at Dede on his left as he bent over the table. He smiled looking at her face but his face became serious a
"You can't run away from me. I always get what I want," Brian said with a smirk and Dede's heart began to race. "Let's see. You lied to me at the motel and you ran off," Brian scoffed. "And now here you are. A worker in one of my many businesses," he added with a smirk. "I will scream," Dede said leaning against the door and Brian laughed so hard he held his stomach. He stood up from behind his desk, leaned against the desk facing Dede, and folded his arms across his chest. "Since you said you only have a basic education. Let me ask you this question. Do you know what soundproof means?" Brian asked and Dede just stared at him in silence. "Let me tell you what it is," Brian said. "Soundproof simply means not allowing any sound to go through something," he explained. "Guess what, that is what this room is. Soundproof. You scream your lungs out, no one will hear you," he said with a smirk. "What do you want from me? You have a beautiful girl who loves you. My sister Julia. So why ar
"We are going for a ride," Brian said. Steve went for the car key and soon, they were out of the building with Steve behind the wheel. "She was behind the building. So use the back street," Brian said and Steve made a turn onto the road leading to the back street behind the restaurant. Dede was out on the street, not sure which way to go. She walked on the pavement trying to find her bearing. She had come in from the front, now she was behind the restaurant. "Okay, Dede think," She said to herself. "If this is the back of the restaurant," Dede said and looked at the road behind her. "This road should lead to the front of the restaurant. I can find my way back to the junction and return to the shelter," she said and decided to use the road. Dede had only taken a couple of steps when she saw a car heading in her direction. A couple of cars had driven past her earlier but this particular car seemed like it was heading for her. When the car was close she saw Steve behind the wheel an
"Bryson, which other girl are you bringing in this time?" Melissa thought as she descended the staircase. "Hello, Bryson is doing it again. Find out who the girl is," Melissa said on the phone and ended the call before exiting the building. Alex returned to the hospital and was directed to the ward where Dede had been kept. He pushed the door open and frowned immediately. "Who did this?" Alex asked the nurse who was with him. "She was being difficult. We strap her to the bed because we didn't want to sedate her," the nurse replied. "You should have used the sedative. Now she looks like a criminal," Alex said and stood by the bed. "What do you want from me?" Dede asked with a frown but even with her frown she looked pretty making Alex blink twice. "Nothing," Alex replied. "Left to me alone, I would have just given you the bundle of cash and left you but my boss wants to help you after hearing your story," he added and Dede's frown deepened. "My story?" Dede repeated. "Yes. I k
"No, no, this can't be happening," Dede whispered on her lips taking some steps back. She turned to walk away but heard someone call out to her. There were two people she recognized from the people sitting together. One was the man she had seen on the television the first day she arrived in the country and the second was the lady she met at the restaurant who spoke to her harshly. "Does Mr Jackson own this place too?" Dede thought, not sure what to do as she continued taking slow steps backwards. "Hey, are you not supposed to bring the drinks here," came a lady's voice. There were two men and four ladies. Bryson sat relaxed in his seat with his arms stretched on the backrest of the seat. Melissa sat next to him and the other gentleman sat opposite Bryson with the three ladies sharing a seat with him. Eva sat on his right side and Jolie and Christina sat together to his leftDede paused in her steps, walked towards the group and with trembling hands, placed the tray of drinks on the
Bryson left the room after he was done. After he found Dede in the hotel dressed like that and the images that were sent to him, which he confirmed were fake with the help of Knight, he started monitoring all of them to collect enough evidence to punish all of them. "I am done," Bryson said to Arnold as he was in his office. "And thank you for looking after my wife," he added and Dede stood to his feet accepting Bryson's hand which he offered to her."It is no trouble at all," Arnold said. "So what are you going to do about your disappearance news which had gone viral?" he asked."The news said I was missing, not dead. Except for my stepmother, I want the rest to be on the news for the crimes they committed. I will announce my presence and present my wife to the world," Bryson said."Very well, Mr Adams. I will make that happen," Arnold acknowledged and Bryson left the office. They sat in the car and headed for the hospital. Inside the car, in the back seat, Dede rested her head on
The police car drove in and parked in the parking lot. In handcuffs, Alex was brought out of the vehicle and led towards the station. Inside the station, he walked into a room which he quickly figured was an interrogation room."I have a right to an attorney. I am not saying anything until my attorney is here," Alex said when he was forced to sit and his hand locked to the table. "Yeah, you do," the officer chuckled and exited the room. Alex remained calm as he scanned the room. It was very small and there was a mirror behind him. There was another chair in front of him. He was forced to rest his hand on the table because he had been handcuffed to the table. After what seemed like forever, the door was slowly pushed open and a man walked in accompanied by an officer. The man had on a shade and a mask. His face was completely covered. Alex frowned wondering what was going on but still kept his cool. The officer pulled the seat behind the table for the man and he sat down. Alex's fr
Bryson and Dede were ushered into the office of the chief of police. They sat on the provided seat and the door was closed to give them privacy. Bryson removed the nose mask he had on and took off the baseball cap to reveal his identity."Ah, Mr Adams, I thought you were," asked the chief of police, Arnold, looking surprised like he had seen a ghost."Dead?" Bryson completed the statement."No, but you were involved in an accident. We still have what is left of your burnt car and my people are out there trying to find you," Arnold said in one breath surprised by Bryson showing up unharmed in his office."That is why I am here. My life and that of my wife here had been threatened," Bryson began. "I am here to report a crime going on in this city right under your nose," he added with a serious expression.Dede also removed her nose mask and the scarf she had used to cover her head."She is my legally married wife," Bryson began. "To the people who know her, she is dead or missing. And th
Knight smiled and Bryson looked upstairs. Knight knew exactly what Bryson was thinking about."You fed her with too much crazy information last night?' he asked."I feel so. Her father's sudden appearance. Possibility of Brian being her half-brother. I wish with all my heart Brian would not be her half-brother. It will break her," Bryson said sadly."Did Brian sleep with her?" Knight asked for confirmation concluding it would be the only thing that would traumatise someone after finding a family member."That bastard raped her," Bryson replied. "Sorry to hear about that. I will advise, whatever you found out keep it away from her then," Knight advised. His phone beeped with a message notification. Knight keeping checked it and stared at Bryson."What?" Bryson asked curiously."Your worst fears have been...." Knight began and stared at his screen again. "Brian is her half-brother," Bryson completed the sentence when Knight stared at him."Nope. This whole thing is beginning to look
Alex was sitting in the living room, casually dressed. He held the TV remote in his hand and playfully tapped on the keys as he stared at the black screen of the TV. His phone rang snapping him back to reality. He checked the caller and answered it immediately."It is done," came a voice."Good. You left something for the police?" Alex asked."Yes, boss," replied the man. "Good," Alex acknowledged and ended the call. He grabbed his car keys and exited the apartment. He got behind the wheel and started the car engine. He moved the car out of the compound and went down to the club downtown. He found a place to park, got out of the car and took long strides towards the club. Some girls loitering around the club entrance tried to flirt with him. She shot them a dangerous look scaring them off. He walked into the club and sat on a chair positioned in front of the stage where a stripper was dancing seductively. At the hideout, Knight had a call from his men on the ground. "Speak," he sai
Outside, at another location, Brian and Melissa were done with their passionate session in the car. Brian got behind the wheel and started the engine putting the car back into motion. Melissa adjusted her clothes and placed her underwear in her bag."I will call Janet and tell her I will see her tomorrow. I can't go there like this," Melissa said fixing her messy hair."Cool, let's go to my place then," Brian said and Melissa nodded. She was getting used to Brian's sex addiction life but she enjoyed his touch and hence didn't mind. On the way to Brian's apartment, Melissa's phone rang and she answered seeing who was calling."It is done, everything that belongs to Bryson now belongs to you," came the voice of a man and Melissa's lips curved into a wide smile."When can I pick the documents?" Melissa asked."If you are not too busy, you can pass by my office and pick them up," the man said."Sure, I am on my way," Melissa said and ended the call. She excitedly planted multiple kisses o
"I am going to tell you a story. At the end of it, you will get to know who you are," Bryson said and led Dede to the couch.Dede sat down curious about what Bryson was going to tell her and how that would tell her who she was. She sat on the couch and Bryson sat down next to her. He held both of her hands in his and planted a kiss on the back of her hand. He rubbed the back of her hand gently with his thumb. Dede just sat down curious about what all of this was about. She was happy Bryson was there with her and she was enjoying the attention he was giving her. "Some time back, a man approached me and sought my help in looking for a missing person," Bryson began, making sure he didn't give the story away until he was done. He wanted Dede to listen attentively to every detail he was going to share with her before he let her know, she was the one he was talking about. "This man lived a carefree life and had a lot of women. He was a playboy," Bryson continued and Dede just stared at h
Back at Rebecca and Dave's location, Dave was done taking notes. "Thank you for being honest with me," Dave said closing his small notebook. "Concerning my husband, what will happen to my daughter?" Rebecca asked, fear of Melissa going to prison run through her. "If your husband lives, he will decide if he wants to press charges. If he dies, the law will take its full course," Dave replied. Inside the hospital, hours passed and they were still waiting for an update on James's condition. Dave and Rebecca strode in making the three turn to look at them. "Any news about your father?" Rebecca asked, taking a seat next to Melissa. "Nothing," Melissa replied. The door flew open and the doctor walked up to them. "We are done and everything was successful. We are moving him to the recovery ward. He is not awake yet. So you can come back tomorrow and he will be awake," the doctor said "Can I stay here with him?" Melissa asked. "You go home. You have enough on your plate alread
Inside the hospital, the doctor came out of the emergency and five people walked towards him. The doctor frowned seeing the additional two men. "How is he?" Aiden asked. "He will live," the doctor began. "The results show, he was hit in the back of his head. The place that was hit caused him to bleed and we will have to remove the clot of blood if not it will create a health problem that could cost him his life. In simple English," he added. "Thank you, doctor," Dave acknowledged. "We prepare him for that but I will need one of you to fill out the form for the procedure," the doctor said and Rebecca owned up as his wife. The doctor left with her to have the form completed leaving Melissa and Brian with the lawyer and the officer. "Ms Melissa, right?" the officer said and fear flashed through Melissa's eyes as chills ran down her spine. "I understand you and your mother were the only ones with him when the supposed accident happened. Now listening to the doctor, how did he fall
