CHAPTER 1
Eva’s POV “Eva wait! Come back, I can explain!” I covered my ears while dashing towards the door. I had listened to Jace’s lies long enough. Everything was a blur but luckily, I could grab my suitcase and fill it with essentials. Just enough to leave this toxic mess of a relationship. “Eva she was trying to seduce me, you gotta believe me.” Jace said while buttoning his shirt. His jeans hung loosely on his waist. If looks could kill, my glare would send him 6 feet under. This wasn’t our first rodeo. I thought Jace and I could make it work. After months of couple’s therapy, vacations and getting a pet dog. After everything. “Get out of my way you piece of shit” I said while holding back tears. I made my way to the living room. The frames of us together on a fishing trip tugged my heart. At the end of the day, bags in my hands and a heavy heart -I was disposable. I heard the back door slam shut. Seeing as Jace and I were the only ones here, Melody had scurried out like a wet mouse. “Of all the p-people you had to do it with this t-time.” I shrieked. “You had to pick Melody! I introduced you to her 2 months ago and-” My words cut short from the sound of roaring thunder. Just great. Let the heavens cry along with me. “You’re not going to throw away our relationship now, would you?” Jace said coyly. He had the nerve to smirk in this situation. That was my last straw “You’re the one who ruined us. You selfish manipulative asshole!” My mind raced back to the times he would call me crazy for being suspicious or call me insecure for asking his whereabouts. It all made sense now. I wasn’t crazy after all. Once I got my files and special mug into my bag, I checked my pocket for the keys. With a deep breath, I grabbed an umbrella ready to walk out the door. “Oh no, you’re not going anywhere” Jace said while blocking the exit. My heart skipped a beat. The rain continued to pour, and lightning struck, flashing the windows with a bright purple streak. The dark curls and honey brown eyes I fell in love with had become dark and menacing. I never thought Jace would attempt to hurt me, but this stance has proved I can’t trust anyone. “Jace you can’t hold me hostage” I shouted so I could hear myself from the downpour. Jace chuckled to himself. “There’s nowhere to go either way” He relaxed his shoulders walking towards me. “Why don’t we go back upstairs, cuddle and talk about this” His voice felt like a sharp sting. He really wants me to go back to that room where I caught him thrusting into another woman as she moaned his name. The image kept flashing in my mind and my eyes couldn’t hold it in anymore. But I had to stay strong. I can cry when I leave because he doesn’t deserve my tears. “No more Jace. I’m tired of this!” I shouted, clenching my fist. As I tried to run out, he tackled me, pinning me to the couch. “Poor Eva” he said mockingly. I struggled with all my might, but he had a firm grip on my wrists. Jace bent low to whisper in my ear. “Even if you decide to leave, who’s going to take care of you?” My chest tightened. Part of what made Jace my world was the convenience he brought when he wasn’t a douche. Jace was privileged to be born into Italian Aristocracy. When we met in our second year of college, He was a bit aloof but seemed to have the right intentions. I was his dream babe. Once we finished college, his aunt offered me a job as a chief editor of her lifestyle magazine- Christiana Couture. It was a great job with amazing colleagues, I even got to travel to Paris for a fashion show. Jace also insisted we move in together because we were quote “so in love”. Now all of that would be taken away because I’m trying to choose myself for once. In a split second, the door barged open. Sunshine; my German shepherd dog, ran into the room covered in water. Immediately, she jumped on Jace and started barking. As Jace fought Sunshine off, I was able to dash into my car and lock the door. My world was all hazy. I took a deep breath and felt the tears dripping down my face. It was actually over. I reached into my back pocket for my phone to call Stacy. Stacy and I have been best friends since middle school. If there was anyone that could help in this situation, she could. The ringtone played softly in the background till she picked up. I tried to speak but my voice failed me. “Hey Eva! What’s up? Gosh the rain is so bad right now-” I broke into a smile hearing her voice. Stacy always seems so happy. “Hello, Eva, are you there?” I summoned enough energy to respond. “Hey Stace…” “Eva what’s wrong. Talk to me” I gripped the steering wheel hard. Then it hit me. I don’t think Sunshine can hold down Jace for that long. “Are you at home Stacy?” I turned on the ignition. The rain was still pouring down, but nothing could stop me. “Yeah... I am, do you need me to come over?” “Uhm no, I’ll be at your place. Call you back.” I was already on the move. The grey clouds made the entire street melancholic and barely visible. The radio did its best to drown out the rain although I angrily skipped all stations that played love songs. Not the mood. Stacy lived all the way in Avalon city which is miles from here. Maybe Avalon could be a fresh new start for me. I was on the highway for an hour trying to block out thoughts of Jace. He called me over 50 times before I blocked his number. The roads became clearer and the sky less grey. I could feel my heartbeat relaxing. Once I passed the silver knight landmark for Avalon, it would be 20 mins to get to Stacy’s place. I was singing to Sharpest tool in the shed when I saw some guys in black gathered at a bend. This part of Avalon was known for its delinquency, so I paid it no mind. Except when I caught sight of a pink skirt. I lowered the volume, hit the brakes quickly and drove over there. With the windows down I heard some shouting and a woman’s voice muffled up. My eyes widened when I caught a glimpse of a man holding a spiked baseball bat. Typical mugging weapon. “Let me go-” My heart dropped hearing her struggle. There was no calling 911 now. I reached into the glove cabinet in seconds. I have to save her.CHAPTER 2The engine of my car revved as I charged straight at the delinquents. My headlights flashed at them and in seconds they scattered like flies. In a swift turn, I drifted at the curve barely missing the white minivan parked at the other side of the street. One of the masked thugs clenched the girl’s arm to keep her put. He had a dragon tattoo on his forearm and spoke in Greek to his accomplices. I pulled down the windows of the passenger’s seat and pointed my Jennings J 22 rifle straight to his forehead. His face was drained of blood as he stood frozen like a deer in headlights.“Come on, get in!” I screamed while kicking the passenger door open. The girl broke free from the man’s hold and ran into my car. The moment her legs were in, I stepped on the gas and sped off. The men swore in profanity behind me and threw their weapons, but I was way past their target range.“Are you okay? Did-d they touch you?”She vehemently shook her head “no”. The wave of wet clothes and faint va
CHAPTER 3 You would think that after years of working late hours without overtime, creating innovative ideas for the brand and cleaning up all the dirt of the business, you could keep your job despite interpersonal relationship issues. But no, I’m storming into Madame Christine’s office with the last shred of dignity I have, to demand an explanation. I take a deep breath. As the elevator ascended to the top floor, the memories of when I first started this job began seeping in. I was a nerve wreck. 19-year-old me was balancing the folders of sketches, mood boards and portfolios right in front of her. My outfit was barely impressive, definitely not “couture”. However, Madame Christine peered into my cut-out pages, looked at me with stern eyes and muttered “potential” We never had the fondest of relationships. Very firm responses and reviews, a slight chuckle here and there. My relationship with Jace wasn’t a topic of conversation. So why would she dro
CHAPTER 4Sterling’s POVI can’t believe I was forced to do this. A real man gets the job done by himself with no help needed whatsoever. I look at the corner of my desk and wince at the doctor’s report. My mother got so worried about my blood pressure results that she emotionally blackmailed me to get a personal assistant. The last time I had any sort of clerical help, the man passed out from exhaustion after a week. I don’t need anyone slowing down my progress but unfortunately…It can’t be helped.“Sir it’s time to interview the shortlist of applicants.” The head of Human resources tells me. I slip on my jet black suit and look at my watch. 9:00 am. What a perfect use of the morning. The first applicant was an average man with clothes too tight to fit, He huffed and puffed about his achievements but nothing truly worthwhile. To end the noise, I wrote down his score and told him to invite the next person. The next applicant must have lost her way because she dresse
CHAPTER 5Eva’s POVMy Jaw dropped when a jet black limited edition range rover parked in front of Stacy’s apartment building. My heart was pounding, almost out of my chest. This is really my work car? A man dressed in a burgundy suit carried my bags into the boot and opened the door for me. Such chivalry, this must be how princesses feel. I stepped into the car and snuggled into the fine leather seat.
