IZZY POV
My eyes were sticky and my mind was muddled. The sounds were overwhelming, and I began to hyperventilate.
“Calm down, Luna,” I heard a strange voice say. That panicked me more and I heard beeping in the room increase, starting to go faster and faster.
“Is the Gamma here?” a female voice asked. I was so confused. Luna. Gamma. What were they talking about?
“She’s here!” someone shouted and then I felt a cool hand on my forehead and heard my mother’s voice.
“Shhh, sweetheart. Everything is okay,” she whispered. I relaxed into her hand. I just had a bad dream. It was all a bad dream.
The beeping slowed down and there was a harsh light in front of my closed eyes, penetrating through my eyelids. I tried to turn my head by my mom tightened her hands.
“Shh,” she whispered.&n
IZZY POVI really wanted to go home. I was so excited to see my mates when they got here but now I just wanted them gone. I needed to process this information.Unfortunately, it didn’t seem like that would be happening anytime soon. I am not sure if my smile fooled Caleb, but he was so excited that he couldn’t contain himself. He had a grin that went from ear to ear. I tried to match it.The doctor opened the door to the room and a cart with a machine was rolled in. He turned to me with a beam.“Let’s take a look at this baby, shall we?” he asked, rubbing his hands together. The triplets gathered together on one side of the bed with my mom standing behind them, craning her neck for a look. The doctor was on the other side, lubing up a wand with a handful of goo. The wand went inside me, the machine was turned on and everyone waited for the first grainy image to
I looked around the corner, checking for my mates. I didn’t see any sign of them so I slipped down the hall and into the kitchen. Joanna was at the counter, chopping vegetables for our lunch salad.“Joanna, I’m dying for a donut,” I groaned. “Please tell me you have some stashed somewhere around here.”She winked at me and went to a drawer, pulling it out and revealing a trove of cookies, donuts and cupcakes. I groaned.“Thank you. You’ve saved me.”She giggled. “Don’t tell your mates,” she said. “They’ll kill me.”I rolled my eyes. “They’re taking this a little too far,” I said. Secretly, it pleased me that they were taking such an interest in me and the babies. They had changed, literally, in the moment they promised to. They started by going to the meeting and apologizing to
The DJ wants to know where to set up? Destiny mind linked me. To the left of the dance floor, I replied. I was running around putting last minute touches on things before the party started in three hours. My friends were all helping me out. In an hour or so, I would head back to the Alpha House and get dressed. The celebration came at a good time. The Pack was excited, and that excitement was contagious. Normally I would dread any sort of gathering where I would have to participate in any way, but I was actually looking forward to this. I felt a little flutter in my belly, and I looked down and smiled. In the past week, I had grown a tiny little bulge in my lower belly. “Once they start growing, you’re going to get big, fast,” Joanna had warned about my babies. My mom was delighted with my baby bump. She tended to get a silly look on her face whenever she saw me.
IZZY POVThanks to the exuberant help of my mates, I was washed, dressed and ready to go in plenty of time.I was wearing a simple sky-blue dress with spaghetti straps and an A line. It was short, showing off my legs, but hid the little bump that I was sporting. The entire pack knew I was pregnant with twins, but I didn’t want to bring attention to it today. Today was for celebrating everyone. The pack members began arriving. I had given everything one last walk through and was more than pleased with the results. Everything looked perfect. The DJ began playing the most popular tunes and people were already beginning to fill plates and mingle.“It looks beautiful, Izzy,” Destiny gushed, putting her arm around me.“It does, doesn’t it,” I said. “I really appreciate yours and Sami’s help. You guys made things so much easier.” I looked arou
I made my way back to the table I was sitting at and fell heavily into the seat. Caleb patted me on the shoulder. “Are you okay?” he asked quietly. I gave him a rueful smile. “Thanks for letting me take care of that,” I said. “I know you were right behind me.” “Just ready to help if needed. It took us a long time to learn, but you are incredibly capable. You handled it better than I would have.” “Thanks,” I acknowledged, accepting a glass of punch from a waiter that was walking around. My hands were still shaking. Trying to draw the attention away from that, I craned my neck. “Any idea where the strawberry shortcake went? I’ve been waiting for that all night.” Caleb chuckled. “I’ll go get you some, love,” he said, standing up and heading to the buffet. I sat back in my chair and, within minutes, the chair next to me was occupied again. I turned with a smile, expect
IZZY POVI thought I was dreaming. It was just like before when I found out I was pregnant. I could hear the beeping of the heart monitor and sense that my mates were near me.I opened my eyes slowly. The bright light hurt my eyes and my throat was raw. I looked around and saw Ethan lying on the couch, sound asleep. Caleb was in a chair, bolt upright, also sleeping. I didn’t see Reese.Heka? I tried to talk to my wolf. I could feel her, faintly, but she didn’t answer me.The door to the hospital room opened and Reese came in. He was pale with dark circles under his eyes, and he was holding three to-go cups. I could smell the coffee from my bed.“Izzy!” he said with a sad smile. “You’re awake.”I nodded. “What happened?” I asked. Talk about déjà vu.Reese walked over and nudged Caleb
IZZY POVIt took me twelve minutes to get ready.Initially, I decided I wasn’t going to go with her, and I figured she could drag me out if it was so important to her. I would fight her if I had to, I decided. I wasn’t going to go do what she wanted me to do. I sat on a stool in my bathroom with my arms crossed over my chest, preparing to be stubborn. I lost my nerve at the seven-minute mark. I rushed to put on my clothes and tie up my hair, giving my reflection a rueful look. What can I say? I got my stubbornness from my mom, and I knew her well enough to know that she would battle me to get her way. I was too tired for that.Fortunately, she was preoccupied with a text she had gotten to give me more than just a glance when I came out of my bedroom. I was glaring at her, but she seemed very unconcerned.“You need to eat something,” she said.“I&rs
IZZY POVIt had been two weeks since my mom took me to the meadow. I needed that. It wasn’t the therapy that a lot of people would find effective, but it was what I needed. Lucy had been afraid that I would be triggered by her growing belly, but I wasn’t. I was happy for her and I was glad to be back at work with my best friend.I had stopped by the dining room to grab a snack and I was heading back into my office when the front door to the Alpha House banged open and Piper, Joanna’s granddaughter, rushed in, crying. I grabbed her and gave her a hug.“What’s wrong, buttercup? Why are you crying?”She hiccupped on my shoulder. “It’s nothing, Luna,” she said.“It sure doesn’t sound like nothing,” I said, patting her on the back. “You can tell me.”She shook her head, her eyes wide. “Grammy said I am no
EPILOGUE TALIA POV “Coming!” I answered my mom, looking in the mirror and tucking my hair behind my ear. Today was my eighteenth birthday and I was officially going to introduce my wolf to the Pack. I had technically been able to shift since I was a baby, but we had managed to keep that a secret from almost everyone, though it had been a close call a few times. My brothers were coming back from Mongolia with their mate, Zaria, and their friend, Leo, to help celebrate my birthday. They were on some sort of a mission for the Council, but they got permission to come home for this event. They were twelve years older than me and I liked to tease them about being old. They didn’t think I was as funny as I knew I was. They were cool, though, and all my friends loved my brothers. Their mate was also pretty awesome. She was the daughter of our Beta and one heck of a warrior. She went to the same camp my grandmama was accepted to. Only the best warriors are allowed to go. I ran
IZZY POV I rubbed my swollen belly and sat down behind my desk with a sigh. Baby girl was seriously a week overdue, and I was over being pregnant. I wanted to meet my Talia and that moment couldn’t come soon enough. A lot had happened in the three months since the Summer Solstice Celebration. Elder Voltaire had officially asked permission to join our pack and he put in his retirement notice to the Vampire Council. Apparently, serving as head Council Member for three hundred years was enough for him. We gave the Blood Moon Pack to Griz and Destiny. We talked a long time about it and had first asked Leo if he was interested in taking over for his father. He had vehemently turned down our offer, insisting that he never wanted to see the Blood Moon Pack again. When we had gone to visit, I could see why. The pack needed a lot of work and there was a general sense of discourse. Griz and Destiny agreed to take on the Pack with Griz being named the first non-wolf Alpha of a Pack.
IZZY POV“So what do you do, Elias?” Reese asked. I could see his nostrils flaring a little to see if he was a wolf. I didn’t sense a wolf in him, but I wasn’t going to ask. It was kind of like asking someone’s religion or income. If they offer the information, we could talk about it. But only if they offer it.“I’m a bounty hunter,” he said. Kat was clinging to his arm.“A supernatural bounty hunter,” she corrected. “He works for the Council, believe it or not.”Elias smiled. “Kind of. They hire me on occasion. I work for myself,” he corrected her gently.“Sorry,” she said, smiling. He leaned down and gently kissed her on the lips. I grinned. I was so happy for my friend.“Tell us about one of your captures,” Destiny asked. She was next to Griz,
IZZY POV“How are you doing?” I asked Destiny. We were busy hanging decorations around the backyard, and it was the first time I had a moment alone with her in a week. I knew she was feeling really guilty about Kat leaving. She shrugged. “I’m okay. I just feel awful every time I look at Griz. I never intended for her to leave. I just wanted her to be more careful.”I dropped the streamer I was holding and put my arm around her. “I know. And so does everyone else, including Kat. She just needed a change. She spent so much time and effort making sure every part of Cornelius was destroyed that she doesn’t know what to do now. She’s just trying to find her place.”Destiny sighed. “Tell Griz that. He is worried about her.”“She’s moving around pretty quickly,” I offered. “I think sh
IZZY POVThey say a Luna’s work is never done. They’re right.I got back and had my bath and some alone time with my mates, but the pack business didn’t slow down. I was involved in the planning of the half-way house we were building as well as another youth center. I approved budgets and began working on the nursery upstairs, a room we hadn’t used in eight years. And then I began to plan the summer solstice celebration, a tradition that we had upheld since we first started it thirteen years ago.“Black and white this year?” Destiny asked. “I hate black and white,” Lucy said. “It makes everything look so formal and this should be fun.”“Okay. Black and gold?” Destiny was relentless. Lucy threw a wadded up napkin at her.“You only want black because you love it,” Lucy accused her.Destiny shrugged.&
IZZY POVThe gavel dropped and the room exploded. I turned and Kat flew into my arms, hugging me. She wasn’t normally demonstrative, and I was pleased. I needed someone to hug right now, and Kat was perfect. She was also a great bodyguard. She pulled me through the reporters at the door and only got tripped up by one of the fae reporters who used projection to try to block us. Kat pushed him over and got me out of there and into a taxi without further incident.“Keystone Airport,” she told the taxi driver, naming a private airport. I was guessing that my mates had communicated with her.“I can’t wait to get back to the pack,” I said, leaning against the back seat. “I’m exhausted. I just want a bath and an uninterrupted night of sleep.”“I’m not going back with you,” Kat said suddenly. I sat up.“Why?
IZZY POVThe twenty-four members of the Councils filed out, leaving me standing at my table, still in the handcuffs. Thanks to Johan, the handcuffs were the normal ones that they used in the human world which meant I could break them if I needed to, but I wasn’t going to. I wanted the shifter world to see what was going on.After the council members left, Kat walked over to me bringing a couple of chairs. She plopped them down and I gratefully sat. “Did you have a vision earlier?” she asked.I nodded, rubbing my forehead. “Was it obvious?”“To me,” she answered. “I know you. I was about ready to create a diversion.”I chuckled. “You’re a good friend,” I said. A look crossed her face for a second but then disappeared. I had said something that bothered her. Curious. Her phone chirped and she looked at it.&n
REESE POVThere was an outburst from the spectators in the viewing area. The main werewolf and main vampire council members were banging their gavel, telling people to be quiet. We all exchanged grins.“We are not the ones on trial here, Luna,” the main vampire council member said fiercely.“No. You’re not. I am. And I am telling you why I had to do what I did,” Izzy said. She turned to the werewolf council again.“Who among you believed that the prophecy from Nehum thirteen years ago was about me?” She kept eye contact until all twelve members had their hands raised. “And who among you thought that the prophecy was also about my sons?” The same twelve hands were raised.“And the same on the vampire side?” she asked, turning. Reluctantly, some of their heads nodded. The others resolutely ignored her, keeping thei
REESE POV“This session will now come to order.” We were watching the trial on television. The Council, in their infinite wisdom, had decided at the last minute to broadcast the trial on a special encrypted channel that Packs would have access to. We had turned it on first thing this morning when we woke up, looking at an empty room somewhere in Salt Lake. We were watching when the members from both Councils filed in, twenty-four in total. Johan was part of the werewolf council. Alessia had gasped when she saw him take his seat. They had brought Izzy in with handcuffs on. I had roared, losing control of my wolf, but Alessia had wrestled me down. “It’s for show,” she had soothed me. “They’re not silver. Just look. She’s fine. She can break them in a second.” Vin was not convinced but at least he gave me control back.“Isadora Killian, Luna of the Moonstone Pack, you were called before the Council today to answer to an entire list of charges. But you were not the only one
