IZZY POV
I heard the ceiling collapse, and I squeezed my eyes shut as tight as I could, praying that Troi was able to get the last baby out before the ton of dirt and rocks cascaded down, crushing them.
I listened intently, trying to hear anything other than the frantic beating of my heart. Nothing. The tons of soil separating me from the entrance of the cave muffled any sort of noise that might be going on. I couldn’t hear if a rescue was in progress or if a baby was buried, crying out for me. I shook my head, trying to clear my mind of that horrible mental picture.
First thing first. I needed to get out of this bed. I twisted my arms, trying to work the silver off from my wrists. Troi had immediately began gnawing them the second she found me. I stopped her. It was more important for her to get the babies out of here and she acted like she understood, taking each bundle out carefully
REESE POVI was hauled to the top of the cliff rather quickly by my exuberant warriors. I reached the top and looked around. Fifty warriors were standing, all of them grinning at me.Then, the warriors parted, making a path.I held my breath.Izzy stepped into view. Someone had flung a blanket over her shoulders. She was still in her nightgown, and it was dirty and bloody. Her hair was braided, but many strands had come loose and were coated in dirt and dust. Her face was dirty, and I could see tear tracks down her face. She gave me a small smile.I took a deep breath. “Izzy!” I said, beginning to run towards her. Her face lit up and she took a few wobbly steps towards me before I reached her, enveloping her in my arms. I picked her up and swung her around. She buried her head in my neck.“Reese,” she breathed. And then she began
IZZY POVThe doctors practically forced Caleb into a wheelchair and assigned an orderly to wheel him to see the babies. Caleb grumbled, but I think he was still feeling a little weak from his adventures because it was halfhearted. We followed behind him, led to the room with our sons. The door opened and I could see three bassinets in a row. Medical equipment was set up, but nothing looked like it was running. I gave a sigh of relief, praying that my sons were found healthy enough that they didn’t need any medical interventions.Ethan was standing in place, gently rocking his body from side to side. When the door opened, he turned, a big grin on his face. He had a baby in each arm, and one was in the bassinet behind him.“Hi, daddies and mama,” he crooned. I let go of Reese’s hand and stepped forward, reaching out. Ethan carefully placed a baby into my arms.I
GRIZ POVIzzy had told me to follow her scent until I found Kat. I didn’t need to. I just followed the screaming.Once I had determined that it wasn’t Kat screaming, I slowed down and shifted back into myself. I was a big dude, but my bear was even bigger, and the tunnel was tight. It was still tight, but I fit better as myself.I rounded the corner and found myself in a larger chamber. This was the source of the screaming. And I was right. Kat wasn’t the one doing the screaming. She was causing the screaming.Kat had pounded four stakes into the ground in a large X pattern. She had then stretched out her captive between the stakes and tied his wrists and feet to each of the stakes. She had also put two stakes directly on each side of his neck and strung a taunt wire over. If he was to raise his head, the wire would cut into his neck. Raise the head too f
GRIZ POVI finished taking care of the body and then washed my hands in the same trickle of water Kat had cleaned herself with. Then I followed the tunnel out.Kat was waiting for me right at the entrance of the passageway. I could see a few warriors in the meadow, waiting for us. Reese must have ordered them to wait in case we needed help.“Did you do it?” Kat asked. I nodded my head.“It’s done.”“How?” Kat seemed anxious. “He’s a vampire so it has to be done right.”“Decapitated and then the body burned,” I said. “That’s what took me so long. I didn’t want to accidentally start a forest fire. Cornelius has caused enough damage.”She nodded. I could tell she was fighting back tears. I reached over to her and pulled her into my chest. She stood in the circle of my arms.&nbs
IZZY POVThe next night we brought the triplets home to an intimate celebration with just our family and staff. I had asked that it remain small, but we had added so many people to our extended family that we ended up with a full house of people who wanted to congratulate, hold and snuggle with the newborns. Despite the joy and merriment, I felt a little guilty for celebrating the new lives when so many had been lost in the battle.“May I hold the baby?” Joanna stood in front of me. I had gone off into a quiet corner to feed the babies one by one. I just finished nursing Axl so I quickly buttoned my shirt and handed him over to Joanna. She looked so sad and my heart ached for her.“I’m sorry about Emma,” I said, knowing my words were inadequate. I had found out yesterday that Joanna had lost her daughter and that Piper had lost her mom.“She wanted her life and her d
IZZY POVAnd, with that, our lives changed. Days went by so fast and we all fell into bed exhausted every night. I had plenty of help with the babies, and I still felt like I was late for everything and I was usually dressed wrong. But the boys were my life. All six of them. The prophecy moved to the background, never forgotten but not obsessed over. With every major milestone, I would look at the prophecy again and see if it was mentioned. The problem with prophecies is that they’re not really clear and you can make most scenarios fit. Cornelius had tried to do that, and it didn’t end well for him. Most times I would close the computer, deciding that I didn’t need to worry just yet. When the triplets were five, we moved them down a floor into my mates’ old quarters. That decision came one night after Axl walked in on us enjoying an intimate moment. He was concerned because he ha
IZZY POV I knocked on the boys’ bedrooms doors, one after the other. “Hurry up!” I shouted. “Your fathers are waiting! We have a surprise for you!” Today was the boys’ twelfth birthday and we had a surprise planned for them. We were leaving the Pack in the hands of Alpha Steven, and we were taking a week long vacation to a private island that my mates had rented for the week. We were bringing Lucy, Brian and Zaria; Kat; Griz, Destiny and their new little one, Pete; and my mother and her mate. It would be a full plane and a week’s worth of fun. Troi twined around my legs, and I reached down to pet her. She was going on thirteen years old, elderly for a cat, but she was as nimble and agile as a kitten. She leaned into my hand and purred. I absently patted her and then went down to breakfast. Joanna was finally retired and her granddaughter, Piper, had replaced her, schooled by her grandma
KAT POVI sat up in the tree, my down coat tucked around me. It had taken me four days to make it this far north. I didn’t want to use any sort of traceable transportation, so I shifted and ran at night, carrying a backpack of supplies and finding caves to curl up in during the day. Despite the massive snowstorm, I had finally made it to Cornelius’s old compound.I was in a lodgepole pine, forty feet in the air. It was high enough that I had a huge vantage point, but low enough that the branches weren’t too sparce. The branches provided some coverage so that I wasn’t easily seen, but I could still see everything.Below me I watched the movement in the compound. I had heard rumors that someone was running Cornelius’s old business, but I hadn’t believed it until now. It looked like someone had moved in and taken over, expanding. I needed to figure out if they were any threat
