"But, Young Master... It's your birthday today," Ben said to him. Niel gazed up to look at Ben and gave him an innocent look. The look of a helpless child. Ben quickly squatted down to match his height with the seven years old Niel.
"They said that they need to leave," Niel said softly to him.
Ben stared at his parents that were still arguing on who should stay behind to accompany Niel for his birthday.
"Excuse me, Mrs Hampton and Master William," Ben tried to grab their attention but they ignored him as if he was a shadow.
Ben looked at Niel again and saw the hurtful gaze in his eyes. 'How can they do that in front of a seven years old child? Arguing on a matter of who should stay behind to celebrate their own son's birthday. Aren't they feel sorry for Young Master? He might be just a seven years old kid, but he had feelings too,' Ben murmured internally as he saw the couple kept arguing nonstop.
"Oh, I forgot you were there," Meredith suddenly ga
"Okay," she replied cheerfully. She walked speedily to the bed and put the laptop on it. Then she went to Niel again and hugged his left arm like a child. Niel just scoffed at her childish behaviour. 'I'm raising a kid,' he mumbled inwardly, feeling like he was a father to Haylee. The clock showed past nine, they got out of the penthouse in a hurry and went down to the foyer. As soon as the VIP elevator arrived on the ground floor, they headed straight to the Mon Amour Restaurant and entered it."Is it open?" Haylee asked Niel abruptly since there was no one inside the restaurant. It was empty but the lights were on and Haylee could hear that there were people working in the back kitchen."Of course, it's open. It'll open whenever I say it's open," Niel replied snobbishly, intending to annoy her. He could see Haylee was scoffing at him. Some classical music was playing in the background. A table was set in the middle of the cafe for them. Niel pulled one
When it was finally Sunday, Niel sent Haylee back to the lakehouse again. As usual, he didn't stay and leave right away after he dropped her off. He was busy since he needed to deal with some work-related matters and made preparation for Monday. That night, Haylee had dinner with Martha and Ben again. After dinner she stayed at the dining table and surfed the internet from her phone, trying to find some part-time jobs near the school area. Martha was taking the dishes on the dining table to the kitchen and she unconsciously saw what Haylee was doing. 'Why would this kid try to find a part-time job? Is the money that Mr Andersan gave her wasn't enough?' She wondered internally."Are you trying to find a part-time job?" Martha asked Haylee casually.Since Haylee had been living inside the lakehouse for almost a month now, she had become close to Martha and Ben. They always had dinner together when Niel was not around."Yes. But it's so hard to find the one
The next day, Haylee went to school as usual. She didn't want to think much about what Ben said to her last night after dinner. She had checked her bank account. It was true that a thousand dollars had been transferred to her bank account last Friday, proving that Ben was telling her the truth about the school allowance.Yet, she went on with her decision on not using Niel's money and continued to find a part-time job as she had planned before. She walked to the school field during recess time, trying to find someplace to be alone. There was a new grandstand built beside the field and the chairs were all new. She went to sit on one of the chairs."This is refreshing," she mumbled alone while observing the blue and orange chairs on the grandstand. After a while, she took out her phone and started surfing the internet again. She still hadn't decided what kind of part-time jobs she wanted to do and she kept scrolling between the internet pages that showed some loca
It was Wednesday. Today, it finally marked as a month that Haylee had stayed in Niel's house. Right after school, Haylee requested Ben to send her to her old house. She had been preparing to meet her mother again after a month. She figured that whatever might happen later, she just going to suck it up and bear with it. It was the right thing to do after all. She needed to return home. She couldn't possibly live with Niel forever, that's just not right for her. She didn't want to depend on him forever, so no matter how bitter her life might be after this, she would just try to bear with it until she enter college. It just a year left. After she went into college, she'll be free again from having to live with her abusive stepfather. Since Ben already knew her intention to return home, he didn't ask much when she requested to be sent to her old house. He just drove her there straight from school. However, when they arrived, Haylee felt a bit weird because she saw a real estate signboard
Niel was at the penthouse, currently was just having a meeting with his board of directors for about twenty minutes already. The CEO of the company was presenting some new investment plans and Niel was focusing himself on them. Out of the blue, his phone suddenly rang. The meeting got halted as all of them heard the sound of ringing. Niel hastily took out his phone from the pocket inside his coat and saw that the one who was calling him was Ben. He felt weird that Ben was calling him in the middle of his meeting. 'He knew I was in a meeting right now. Why would he call me?' He wondered internally. Usually, Ben would just send him text messages if there was something he needed to tell him. But this time it was a call. 'Was it urgent?' He thought more. "Can we pause for a while?" Niel asked the rest that were present inside the meeting and they just gave him a nod, obeying his request. Niel excused himself from the meeting table and walked to the hallway that l
Within thirty minutes after Ben made the phone call, Niel arrived at Haylee's old house. He parked his car right in front of Ben's car. Ben who was sitting inside the car waiting for him came out again to greet his Master. As soon after Niel got off his car, Ben approached him hastily and bowed down to him in respect. He apologized for calling him and interrupting his meeting previously."Go home. I'll take it from here," Niel instructed him while staring at Haylee from afar.Ben nodded in compliance and got into his car again, driving away from the area immediately.Niel scanned the surrounding. There weren't many people around the area. It was a shabby neighbourhood. Somehow, he felt like he couldn't believe that Haylee used to live in such a neighbourhood before. Now, that he came back to that place again, he felt heavy to let Haylee return to such a place. He noticed that there was a 'For Sale' signboard in front of the house. 'Her mom was really awfu
When it was around nine o'clock, Niel entered his bedroom again and saw Haylee had already fallen asleep. He turned off the stereo and checked the food tray that she left at the bedside table. She did eat some of the food although she didn't really finish it. 'At least she ate a little,' he mumbled internally and took the remote control of the lights. He dimmed the lights inside the bedroom and then took the food tray to the kitchen. After that, he went to his study office. It was the room next to his bedroom. He sat on a swivel chair behind the wide office desk inside the room and took out his phone from his pants pocket. His mind kept thinking about Haylee's old house. 'Should I just buy it?' He wondered. 'She grew up in that house since she was little. I bet she must have a lot of happy memories with her parents inside that house,' he thought more. 'Why am I being this sentimental?' He groaned instead, didn't like the melancholy air that surrounded himself.Niel sig
Niel groaned in distress as his mind rolled back to reality. He still remembered it quite clear that he had made a promise to Haylee before. He promised her that he would not date anyone else. Now, Brianna was trying to sabotage her at school and trying to make her high school life miserable because of him."No... I can't let that happen. Not after Haylee got abandoned like this. Her high school life should be great at least. She's suffering now. I can't just let her suffer at school as well. What should I do?" He grumbled alone inside his study office, having lost of what to do.He knew what was the right choice for him, but it was also the wrong thing as well. He had never imagined being put in such a situation in which making the right decision was also like making the wrong one. It was too complicated, he ended up being stressed because of it."Ahhhh... I have a meeting tomorrow. I don't have time to think about this," He began to sigh over and over again.
After Haylee was done cleaning herself up, Niel finally brought her up to the top floor again. It felt truly uncanny when he saw her smiling, laughing and even making some jokes to him while they were inside the elevator. He felt horrible inside because he remembered what happened to her last night. The fact that she forgot all about it was clear proof that her mental health was deteriorating. They entered the penthouse again and Niel's eyes swiftly went to look at the living room. The television was gone and the mess there had been cleaned up. The food was also had been served on the dining table."Where's the TV?" Haylee asked. She was weird that the television was gone. She tried to recall what happened last night but her head felt hurt instantly. She cried out in pain while holding her head with both arms."What's wrong?" Niel grabbed her body from falling. The woman looked like she was about to faint."Aspirin..." she said and Niel helped her to sit at the dining table first befo
Upon seeing her leaving the open kitchen and entering the bedroom, Niel rushed to the elevator and went up to his penthouse again. He took his spare key card of the condo unit and went down again. He just left his laptop on the floor in front of the condo. It only took him less than five minutes to return and he quickly went into the house. The first thing he did was go to the open kitchen and grabbed all the knives and cutleries. He put them inside a black plastic bag and hid them inside a bin. Then he carried the bin and put it into a cupboard inside another bedroom. He threw a bunch of towels and a blanket inside the cupboard to hide the bin even more. Then he came out to the living room and slowly went to the bedroom that Haylee entered before. He carefully twisted the knob to check if the door was locked. It was and he just stood there thinking about what he should do next. There was not a single sound from inside and that made his heart race. He didn't know if she was okay or hu
Seeing her become speechless, Niel smirked and just walked towards his bedroom again. She was so frustrated that she grabbed an empty wine bottle and threw it toward the television in the living room. The cracking sound of the screen made Niel panic and he ran back to the living room to check on her. He saw her grab another few wine bottles and try to throw them on the television again, just like before. She was acting like a lunatic and so he quickly hugged her body from behind, locking both her arms from moving to stop her violence. "You don't know shit! You don't know what it's like to be me! You don't know shit about me! I'm fucking tired of you! I fucking hated you! I fucking hated living with you!" She shouted frantically while struggling to free herself from him. Niel grabbed her body firm and even tighter, slowly had his eyes reddened and his cheeks felt hot. He didn't know why he was so angry at her yet felt hurt at the same time while looking at her losing her sanity. Hayle
Ashley gasped in disbelief at her words. She stared at Niel and saw the change in his expression. He looked absolutely grim. But Haylee simply looked relaxed as if she was not even in trouble.'So, what would happen if Haylee fails the subject?' Niel thought. Surely, one thing led to another. She would probably deliberately fail the other subjects too so she would need to repeat the first semester. If that happens, she would be moved to a new batch of students next semester and she won't be in the same class with him anymore for the next five semesters. And if somehow Haylee refuses to repeat the first semester and quit Kingston, she could appeal to get into Hudson University for July intake. She was being clever to him. She knew how to threaten him now too. In short, Niel could not afford to kick her out of the group and make her fail the subject, or else he would be the one at loss here. Slowly he released her arm and let her go reluctantly."Exactly," Haylee said arrogantly and wal
Haylee could feel her cheeks turn hot due to the embarrassment. The hall turned silent for split seconds with a lot of eyes staring at her. Niel boldly beckoned her to come to him. Haylee slowly walked down the stair pathway to go to the front. But then she noticed the mad looks Ashley and Linda gave her. She stopped unconsciously, reevaluating her choice whether she should go to Niel or not. It was obvious he wanted her in. In fact, it was not just Ashley and Linda who were looking at her hatefully right now. Haylee noticed that some other students were looking at her disdainfully too, probably those who had asked Niel to take them into his group before but got rejected."Why are you just standing there? Come here," Niel rebuked her gently, beckoning her to come to him again."Niel, how about if we just take Linda? Haylee didn't seem like she wanted to be in our group," Ashley suggested bravely."Why are you deciding for her?" Niel rebuked her coldly, totally a different treatment co
"Do you really think that I won't have a spare key card?" He ridiculed her and took out another key card from his pocket. She scoffed at him instantly. 'I knew it. He would never let me have my own privacy,' she muttered inwardly and just put the key card inside her backpack."That's not fair. I thought it was supposed to be my own place," she said deliberately to show her dissatisfaction."How is that not fair? You had access to my penthouse as well," Niel replied with a chuckle."Is this mean that I'll be living alone for real now? Can Martha live with me?" Haylee asked. Deep down inside, she was anticipating for that to happen for real. "No. I never said that. You're going to still be living with me, in my penthouse, our house. That condo unit was just for emergency. We're going to be studying here for three years. I'm sure at some point your friends or my friends would want to visit our place. So we need a split residence for that. Aren't you the one who didn't want people to kno
"Anyway, your food looked tasty. How long had you known Haylee?" Lily asked more. Her questions were all over the place, non-relating to each other."Hmm..." Niel was about to speak but the woman asked him some more."Haylee said her brother was rich. You're close with her, so you must know her brother too, right?""Brother?" He knitted his brows in confusion and instantly looked at Haylee. She met his eyes and made a poker face at him, silently sending a signal to that guy to go along with her lies."Yeah. Haylee brought a lot of expensive makeup to class, so we asked her how she was rich. She said she had a rich brother," Lily explained cluelessly."Right..." Niel nodded while giving Haylee a playful glare. 'So now I become her rich brother,' he muttered internally."Of course, I know her brother. We're partners," Niel added the lies."Partners?" Now Lily and Haylee said in unison."Yeah. Haylee's brother worked with me. I sent him abroad to handle some projects. He won't come back
"He was the one I'm talking about before. He's my former classmate during high school," Haylee said."Damn, girl! You got into the wrong gang. We're obviously out of your league," Bruno quipped at her and the rest just chuckled in agreement."Are you together with him? He seemed close with you," Lily asked. She suddenly turned into this kind of over-friendly girl to Haylee."We're just normal friends," Haylee avoided telling them the truth."Bring us together for lunch. Introduce him to me please..." Lily begged. She never would have imagined it getting an opportunity to know Niel in person."You don't even want to know his name first?" Haylee teased her and the girl laughed shyly."His name was Nathaniel Anderson. We called him Niel during high school," Haylee said deliberately to let them all know.A while later, the lecturer came into the lecture hall. He was Professor Damien, an old man in his late forties. As soon as he entered the hall, he went directly to Niel and had a handsha
Weeks passed and they finally started college at the end of February. After the orientation week ended, all the undergraduates at Kingston University started their first class the following week. Haylee and Niel pretty much acted like strangers at college. Niel drove by himself to class even though they were going to the same destination because he sometimes would need to go to the company during his free time if his presence was necessary there. So, Haylee too was the same. She drove by herself to classes using the red Ferrari car that Niel gave her during Christmas last year. After coping with her depression about not going to Hudson for a few weeks, Haylee slowly learned to accept her fate of going to Kingston. She tried to look at the bright side. Home was not far, so she didn't need to think about paying to live in a hostel. And surely, if she was somehow in trouble, Niel was around to help her fix it. Her life was easier that way.She attended her first lecture wearing designer
