It was night in Wivern's Rest town. A blanket of darkness covered the entire province. The bright and warm summer Sun that commonly graced the day had long since set and in it's place, twinkling stars. It was a beautiful night for those that enjoyed the cool night breeze and stargazing. Somewhere in the bushes nearby, the chirping of crickets could be heard.
Aelfric stood over the altar with shaking hands. He'd spent months preparing everything. Gone to great lengths to gather the materials he needed. Lots of sleep lost for the sake of this very moment, he'd even slain a gargantuan three headed beast. Now he waited.
Where was she?
She should be here by now. Is she still coming? The woman Aelfric was to marry had agreed to undergo this ritual with him. It was the only way for them, as two of the area's few healers, to become strong enough to stop the devastating Swamp Fever from claiming the lives of hundreds of children each year.
As healers, they had exceptional training, the problem was power. Aelfric's research had revealed exactly where healing power came from and why, until now, it was so limited. After this ritual, he and his beloved would change the tides of disease and death in these lands, perhaps the entire world forever.
Aelfric knew Silver-Dew abhorred the idea of immortality. What they were about to do would rid their bodies of their very souls, freeing the concentrated power of the life-spark to be used for their magic. He'd painstakingly crafted each of them a vessel to safeguard their soul. Sil wore hers around her neck: a beautiful, lovingly crafted pendant with a blood red stone in the center. The stone was rendered from the carefully heated blood of the beast that had captured her, the very beast Aelfric had slain.
Also from the flesh of this most magic monster, Aelfric had fashioned himself a box. He used the more delicate bones from its heads and paws as the structure, and stretched the creature's tanned hide around it. It matched Sil's piece only in the tiny red stones he'd baked onto the leather's surface. The blood of a chimera held a magic of its own, and Aelfric hoped that in using it, he would not only bind their souls into their phylacteries, but to each other forever.
He had never meant to become a necromancer, but as he waited here with his hands sweating and his heart pounding, he realized that this union was to serve as their true wedding. Although it was not the traditional way of matrimony, it was way stronger. It was a bond more irrevocable than any marriage vow, a commitment of eternal life. They would surrender the very essences of their beings to save the innocent ailing members of their beloved community, together.
Aelfric had no idea what to expect from the transformation itself, but he expected it to be painful. Many times he'd told Sil that he alone should undergo the change, that she needn't risk it. He would make the sacrifice, keeping her whole. She wouldn't have to feel the pain the ritual brings with it. Alas, his beautiful Silver-Dew insisted that if this was the way, it was the way for them both. She trusted him. Or did she?
He'd spend so long trying to convince her not to do it, but now, as he stood in the flickering candle light in this dark, expansive cavern where he'd rescued Sil from the clutches of the Chimera, he knew he couldn't survive an immortal life without her by his side. Perhaps it was for that reason that she'd so vehemently insisted.
She knows without her I will live in utter despair. My own soul seems a trivial thing to forgo if only I can keep her. Alfriec reminisced
And just when he was beginning to think she wouldn't show up, there she was. Her golden red hair emerged into the warm light with a fire all its own. Those kind green eyes were locked, as always, on his, and her little arms were outstretched.
"You came" he said, breathless with relief.
" Of course I'm here, my love" She held him close, one hand on the back of his head. The other wrapped tightly around his body.
"Everything's ready", he told her, trying to sound calm. "just a drop of blood, a few words, and we can start the work we were destined for."
"Aelfric-", she started, as he took her dainty hand in his, pricking a slender finger with the end of a blade.
"I know you're scared but it's all right, see? It's almost done". He placed the small drop of her blood in the chalice upon the complex alter he'd prepared. Then he pricked his own finger, adding his blood to the mix.
Something wasn't right. Were those tears forming in her eyes?
"Did I hurt you?", he kissed the minuscule tip of her finger, and she smiled through the tears.
"No, my love. You could never hurt me," she said softly, holding both sides of his face with her hands while leering into his eyes.
"Now I say my part, then you say yours". He took up the chalice, raising it above their heads.
" Anima tutus, anima libertas, vitae aeternum incoruptione. Anima de, anima carcere sero!". His voice boomed in the cavern, echoing off the walls. Aelfric handed a scrap of parchment to Sil.
"Here", he whispered. " Just read", His voice was almost too quiet to hear now, his body tensed with the anticipation of what was to come . " It has begun", he said, stumbling against the alter and strugling to hold himself up.
" Aelfric I...." Sil was white as stone.
"Just read, we're almost there. Any moment now", Aelfric dropped slowly to the floor, still holding out the small scrap of parchment to her.
" I'm so sorry", Sil said. Aelfric felt her lower his head to the cave floor, he heard her weeping as she stroked his hair and told him.
"I can't... I just can't do this". She kept repeating. Her overflowing tears streaming down her cheeks.
Aelfric tried to speak. He couldn't. His body was completely paralysed. The magic was taking hold of him, pain was beginning to radiate from deep within him. Then he felt her soft hands stop touching him, and he knew she was gone.
No, Sil. You can't leave. Just read from the parchment. Sil. Please don't leave . Come back my love. Please. Please Sil. Aelfric screamed in his mind with his hand stretched out towards her as she walked away, since his mouth failed him, hoping that somehow she would hear him.
This could not be happening. He could not loose the only woman he's ever loved his whole life. What is life with his sweet Sil?
He tried to fight the effect of the Magic, to stop the love of his life from walking away from him, but the influence of the magic was too strong for him. He had no other option but to surrender his whole being to it's operations.
The magic shook him vigorously and his body began to writhe in pain. He knew the spell had taken him under, he fought for consciousness, knowing he'd just made the biggest mistake of his life. I need to get back, need to go after her. The magic took over him completely as his eyes grew dark as if black clouds covered them. Then, there was nothing but total darkness and pain.
Days later Aelfric awoke on the cavern floor in a pool of his own filth and vomit. "Sil." He turned as if to look for her then he remembered. He felt empty, not able to distinguish if it was the loss of his soul, or the loss of his love he was feeling so deeply. After washing in the stream and collecting his things, he set out to find her, but as he'd expected, she was gone.
What was the use of an unending living without the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with by his side? To what end was his immortality if it only promised an eternity full of pain? This he thought as he wondered how his life had changed.
PART 1THE TRAVELLERNot all those who wander are lost~ J.R.R. Tolkien. Jan 17, 2065"Someone said, 'Immortality is to live your life doing good things and leaving your mark behind', didn't they? What better way to bring life to people if not through this, this handwork of mine. He pondered as he paced up and down his office. Imagine a life where everyone could be given a second chance livin
She didn’t know what woke her. She sat up straight on her wide bed, squinting her eyes so that it adjusts to the semi darkness in the room. This was starting to become a habit, one that she abhorred with the whole of her being. Every day she goes to bed late and wakes just few minutes before full dawn with a start as if someone had called her name or tapped her. Yet each and every single time, it was just her alone in her room panting heavily. This event has been repeating itself for almost three weeks now. Although there were days when she was spared and she woke like 'a normal human being'. And despite the cold winter outside, Her sheets felt moist, wet from the sweat which still drenched her skin. Her hand went to the oval pendant of the necklace she always wore. She stroked it for a few seconds then She checked the time from the clock on
Clair got to her workplace by eight thirty and packed her car in the space allocated for staffs. Office hours wouldn't be starting till around nine, but most of her colleagues arrive hours before the time to finish up whatever they were working on. The building stood before her with the name THE QUOTIDIAN NEWS plastered boldly on it. She smiled at she looked up at it like it was her first day at work. She couldn't wait to tell her Boss the news.It was a monstrously huge modern skyscraper with Seventy eight floors. Every inch of the ediface was covered in glossy glass and metal. The entire building was own by the news company. Not only were they into newspaper and magazine publication, they also had a radio and TV station.Clair walked the short distance from the revolving front door to the receptionist desk."Ms. Fisher, good morning. Hope you had a nice night?" The woman behind the receptionist desk asked nicely."Thank you Grace. I slept like a b
"Stop the worry Hailey, it's only a mere trip." Clair rolled her eyes. Dressed in mickey mouse T shirt and a flower patterned pyjamas slacks, She was seated on the chair in front of her vanity, painting her toe nails with nail varnish with the leg she was currently painting on her chair.Clair was on the phone with her best friend and foster sister Hailey Fisher. Clair met Hailey in the house of Mr Patrick Fisher. Clair has never known her biological parents and has spent her entire live moving from one foster home to the other. Most of the earliest foster homes she was in was not only crowded but also their foster parents didn't care as much for them as they cared for the money the state payed them to take care of the kids. Most days, the kids were only served a measly amount of food twice a day, there were even days when they went without food. Clair ran away more than twice from these homes but there weren't that many places a seven year old could run to so she was c
Initially, he told himself that the girl was just a means to an end. A talented young reporter who could cover his company's impending product launch with enough edge and controversy to create a hype about his machine. From everything he's gathered on Clair Fisher, creating a hype comes easy to her. She would do what she needed to do for his product launch. The launch was everything. On the small monitor screen inside the private jet, he could see a very low quality video of her walking down the road, towards his location with a tall man by her side carrying her travelled bag."Who's with her?" Rick asked."Sir, it's Jude. He was supposed to be at the radioactive research compound but I fixed him to be Clair's escort since two other guards were already stationed there." Todd responded."That's good Todd. Very good." He turned his attention back to the monitor. Just looking at Clair walk to the plane does something he could not explain to him. He knew he h

The Hostel room buzzed with activity at dawn. Arcus had not told him what time to meet Coldus on Prior street, so he readied himself and set out right away. It took him roughly thirty minutes to walk to his destination, which was near the fruit merchant's house. He saw the yellowish man packing his carriage, and glimpsed yet another man helping him. He approached the two busy men. " Good day Coldus, Master Arcus wishes me to visit Melses Farm today".Coldus looked up from packing some items into the carriage. It was almost a week since Sil spoke to Rick through Clair and since the beginning of the week, Clair barely saw Rick for more than ten minutes a day. He always left in the morning when she'd still be asleep and come back late at night only to say as much as good night before retiring to his own room. He'd instructed Todd to make sure she took her tea and keep an eye on her while he drove himself to work. She was beginning to feel like he was avoiding her but she wondered why.The day was almost over and she was bent on talking to him. She struggled to keep herself awake and when her eyes seemed drowsy, she went to wash her face. Just as she was about to give up and retire to her bed, She heard the door open. It was Rick.Ha! in your face sleepiness.Rick could see a silhouette beginning to stand a little distance in front of him but couldn't make out who it was. He stopped suddenly and switched on the light to see who it was. It was Clair."Why
The botanical garden was a real sight to behold. There was a full collection of all kind of plants, shrubs and flowers. Clair was sure she has never seen as much plants in one place in her whole life on this earth. The whole place looked like tourism material. Not having a vast knowledge about plants, Clair however did recognya few of them. There were azaleas and rhododendrons, lily ponds arranged in some a breathing sequence, dogwoods, and much more. Beside the pond, Clair could see an orderly arrayed line of tropical fruit pavilion, Montgomery Palmetum. There was also a giant waterfall exhibition at the center of the garden, the waterfall gave way to a water channel that veined the whole garden. The effect of the whole arrangement was nothing short of breathtaking. Clair was sure that jaw was already hitting the the floor. She couldn't wait to tell Hailey about the place. If only to appease her sister's anger, because angry she will be when Clair recounts the events o
CHAPTER TWELVEClair woke sometime around dusk. She noticed that the room had a soft ambiance to it in the night. Instead of the conventional light bulb, there were light bulbs that shone as if they were candles. In all, it made the room look soft and comforting."I see you've woken." The voice caught her offguard as she was not aware that someone was with her."Mr. Silver. I didn't know...""Rick." He said cutting her short. " Call me Rick.""I don't think that's a...""I insist." Rick said, pinning her with his piercing eyes. The protest at the back of her throat died a rapid death. Lost in the crystal blue ocean that was his eyes. "Ok Rick." She said to appease him and he gave a small smile and nodded. She's never seen him smile but that smile as small as it was still lit up his face. At the moment, she wanted to see him smile more."You were going to tell me something?" He asked her."Hmmm?" Cl
PART 3THE AWAKENINGOnce the soul awakens, the search begins and you can never go back. From then on, you are inflamed with a special longing that will never again let you linger in the lowlands of complacency and partial fulfillment. The eternal makes you urgent. You are loath to let compromise or the threat of danger hold you back from striving toward the summit of fulfillment.~John O'DonohueCHAPTER ELEVENShe could hear the hands of the nearby clock ticking. There was a cackling noise, probably from the modern fireplace warming the room. Someone was on the phone. It was a deep melodious male voice. Clair found the sound of it soothing.Strange."Yes Alice. Just for two weeks. I want you to shift all the meetings I'll be having till then, the ones that cannot be postponed, have Stanley stand in for me."A minute. Two minutes.
At dawn, the five men assembled outside the inn on their horses and set for the journey into the wilderness. A few people gathered waved them goodbye and good luck. They traveled for hours before reaching the cave where the chimera lived.Everything worked according to their plan, and they captured the chimera and slew it; Aelfric collected some of the beast's blood in a Vail he brought along and then set off to find the hostages. A whimper led him to the farther end of the cave, and he saw all the women huddled in one corner. He foundSil. She is battered, bruised, and scratched, her clothing burned, and she is in rough shape. His eyes teared up when he saw her this Way. She was a bit taken aback when she saw him"Aelfric??" She asked, not believing her eyes."My love." Aelfric rushed and embraced her." I thought you were dead." He whispered into her hair."Oh, you came." She cried. She was looking at him the way she never had. She raised her
It has been two years since Aelfric got to wivern's rest. He had gotten to the level where he went for weeks to his routine patients visits without Arcus accompanying him. His teacher tagged along with him most times only to check up on patients he hadn't seen in a very long time or in rare cases, he went with Aelfric if the situation was complicated. It was a cool evening and Aelfric was done with his normal visiting rounds, he reported to Arcus's compound like he always does at the end of each day's work. He didn't bother to knock as he knew Arcus was already expecting him. Arcus was huddled over a desk in the corner of the room with a reading lantern and he was scribbling on a piece of paper in front of him. "Master Arcus, good evening." At the sound of his voice, Arcus caught off guard by it's sound almost fell off his chair. Aelfric rushed to him, he wondered why Arcus behaved that way. He looked more tensed, nervous even than usual. "Is everythi
