Nancy threw a birthday party a week after I got the car gift from Sam. She was turning 55, and she wanted to spend the day with friends and family.

It was a Tuesday, and Chloe and I came straight from work to the house which was already bubbly with people. We'd been in the house over the weekend, and had also come after work yesterday to help with the planning.

Of course, helping with planning basically meant that we'd planned the entire party, and Nancy had squealed excitedly over the stuff that she liked, and vehemently crossed out the things that she didn't.

The party seemed to be in full swing, and we joined in on the fun. Chloe's parents had never been fans of alcohol so there was none available at the party. Instead, we had mocktails, juice, and some nonalcoholic wine.

We both hugged Nancy tightly and gave her the presents we'd got her. Her eyes watered when I said I loved her and was so grateful for her existence. Some old friends soon came to pull her away.

Chloe went outside

I woke up to find Nancy in the kitchen dancing and singing along to some country music. I smiled at the sight. I'd picked up the habit from her. I danced in the kitchen too.I wrapped my arms around her from behind. “Morning, Nancy."She turned around to hug me properly. “Morning, baby. How are you?"“I'm okay. I'm gonna be late for work." It was almost 8. The distance from their house to Kingstons was almost an hour.“Well then, pour yourself a cup and go get ready." She said.I opened the cabinet and took out a cup. I poured some coffee, and Nancy handed me a slice of leftover cake. With how much I loved my fluffy chocolate cake, I wonder how I survived on Anthony's blasted wheat cake for three whole years. He'd talk down on all the things that I liked and would always go on and on about how they were unhealthy and I had to pay more attention to my health. Not like he cared much, anyway. As I ate, Nancy turned down her music and watched me for a few seconds.“So, how do you feel?" S

  • To Love Again   Chapter 33

The rest of the day at work dragged on, but I kept my head down and focused on getting through it. Nancy’s words still echoed in my mind, but so did the image of Jordan and Cassandra laughing together at the restaurant. Somehow, I felt that the universe had been intentional about making sure that I saw them as I did today. It was a stark reminder of the world Jordan lived in– a world I didn’t belong to. How ridiculous of me to even entertain the idea that anything could happen between us.By the time I left the office, I was exhausted, both mentally and emotionally. I just wanted to go home, curl up on the couch, and forget about everything for a while. But as I got into my car, my phone rang. I looked at the screen. It was Chloe.“Rissa, I need you,” she said as soon as I answered. Her voice was frantic, and I could hear the clatter of dishes and people shouting in the background.“What’s wrong?” I asked, my heart immediately racing. Rissa was always calm and collected when she was

  • To Love Again   Chapter 34

Jordan's POV I leaned back in my chair, staring at the ceiling of my office. The paperwork in front of me might as well have been written in another language for all the attention I was giving it. My mind was elsewhere– on her. Marissa. It had been a little over a month since the party, since that moment in the garden when I’d kissed her, and still, I couldn’t get her out of my head.It wasn’t just the way she looked, though God knows she was stunning. It was the way she carried herself. It was her personality. She was strong, independent, but with this quiet vulnerability that made me want to protect her. She was a puzzle, one I couldn’t figure out, and it was driving me insane. The other night, when I'd dropped by at her house to apologize, the tension had been thick enough to cut through with a knife, but I'd felt it: the attraction. The other night too at my mom's birthday party, I felt it. For a moment during that kiss, she'd let her guard down. She'd let her hand roam over my

Marissa's POVI dialed my mom's number again. I'd been trying to reach her for over two weeks to no avail. Usually, she was quick to complain if I sent her allowance in the afternoon instead of the morning. This time however, it had taken a couple days, and she still hadn't said anything. That wasn't normal.I left her a message apologizing for sending her allowance late, and asking her to respond when she got my message so I could confirmed that she was fine. That done, I got out of bed and into the bathroom. When I got to the living almost half an hour later, Chloe was hard at work. Weird. She was cleaning the house and putting everything to rights. But Chloe never cleaned! Ever!“Erm, what's going on?" I asked, confused. She looked up, and flashed me a quick smile before returning to her work. “Morning, Rissa."“What's going on?" I asked again.“What do you mean what's going on? I'm cleaning!"“Exactly my point, Chloe! You never clean!"She shrugged playfully. “Well, looks like I d

The weekend was over in the blink of an eye, and Monday soon came with its tension and drama. I was starting to hate Mondays, really. The court hearings always fell on a Monday.Today, we were scheduled for 2:00pm so I went to work first and left at 1:30. Jordan hadn't come in to work today. Something about a meeting with the older Mr Kingston. As I stepped out of my car, I sighted Chloe already waiting for me outside the courthouse. She leaned lazily against her car, dressed in navy blue pants and a black shirt. She had also come from work. She was testifying today. Mr Thatcher believed that her testimony as my best friend could really help our cause. So was Dr Kyle. She was the doctor who had treated me the two times when I'd sustained injuries from Anthony's abuse. When Chloe caught sight of me, she smiled and took off her shades. “Hey, beautiful." “Hiii, Chloe." I said, hugging her. “Are you sure you want to do this?" I asked for the upteenth time."Do I look like I'm harboring a

I sat there staring at my mom like she had just materialized from space. She was here, in person, swearing to be truthful in her testimony. Her testimony against me. The whole situation almost made me laugh. Almost.Anthony's lawyer flashed Mr Thatcher a look before continuing with his questions. “Mrs Colton, how would you describe your daughter's character while growing up?”She smiled dreamily before speaking. I recognized that smile. It was deceitful. It was the smile she put on when she was remembering something that never happened.“My Marissa always was a sweet girl. She loves to be the center of attention, and might sometimes make up stories to get the attention that she desires, but it's all for a good cause."My heart plummeted to the ground. Me? Center of attention? Make up stories? But attention was the one thing that I hated most in my life so why would I want it?Mr Fletcher caught her bait. “Make up stories, Mrs Colton? Would you like to elaborate on that?”"Oh! Well, th

  • To Love Again   Chapter 38

With my head on the steering wheel, I let the tears keep flowing. I sobbed agonizingly, thinking of all the times that she'd let me down. I thought of how young I'd been when her irresponsibility forced me to be an adult. I thought of what I'd gone through in the hands of….It took almost an hour for the sobs to ebb. By this time, I had a full-on headache, and I felt a shiver course through me. I needed some air. I didn't even know where I was going, so I didn't want to keep driving.I got out of my car with wobbly legs and took in deep breaths. I knew this place. It looked like even though I hadn't been conscious of where I was headed, my head had sought the same peace that my heart craved. There was a park not far from this place where I used to go whenever I had a really bad experience with Anthony. It was almost always deserted, and it also served its purpose perfectly as my quiet place, the place where I came whenever I needed to clear my head. I hadn't been here in months, and

Jordan stood a few steps away from us, looking like my knight in all of his 3-piece-suit shining armor. He took a menacing step forward.“Move away from her."The men didn't look like they wanted to leave, but they didn't look eager to remain there either. They seemed to be weighing their options. “Who the hell are you?" One of them finally mustered the courage to ask. It happened suddenly. One second, Jordan stood on his side of the road, the next, he was covering the distance in two strides and picking up the man who was only slightly smoking than him by the collar. The other one took a few steps back.“Listen to me, you moron. When I say move away from her, you move away from her without asking me any questions. Do you understand that?" He shook visibly under Jordan's strength and nodded his head. Jordan tossed him to the ground and sent him rolling a bit before he jumped to his feet and scurried after his friend. He waited a few seconds to confirm that the hooligans were truly

The house felt gloomy. Chloe and I returned with her dad to their home on the outskirts of town, but now, for the first time since I'd first stepped foot in here, the place didn't feel like home. It felt… empty, like there was a cloud hanging over it. Even the atmosphere felt gloomy. As I poured boiling water from the kettle into teabags in small mugs, I wiped at a tear that had managed to escape. This was Nancy's favorite tea. She always said it had a soothing effect that was second to none. Now, standing here, making three cups that didn't include hers squeezed at my heart again, reminding me of the gnawing feeling I had felt at the hospital yesterday.I placed all three cups on a tray and carried it into the living room where Chloe sat curled up in a small armchair that she'd always liked to sit in. I looked around for Sam but couldn't find him. Chloe followed the movement of my eyes and signaled upstairs telling me that he'd gone up. I nodded and carried the single mug up the stur

We were on the road in mere minutes. We'd hurriedly packed up the basket and the blanket and made our way to Jordan's car. Now, he tore through traffic and drove as fast as possible to reach the hospital. As soon as he found a spot in the parking space, I was out, running through the reception. I had pulled on Jordan's shirt over my jeans. He was behind me in his white tee shirt. Both our hairs were still wet, but that didn't matter as we raced through the hospital entrance.“Nancy Jenkins" I said to the nurse at the reception and she pointed me towards the ICU. I saw Sam first. He stood with his back against the wall, down the corridor. He had a blank look on his face. Chloe sat on a chair outside the hospital room, her knees drawn up to her chin and her shoulders heaving.Caleb stood opposite her, resting slightly against the wall as he watched her and struggled not to break down at how broken she appeared.“Chloe." I said, and she raised her eyes to mine, rushing to her feet and in

We ordered Thai and stayed in my small, creaky bed through the afternoon. We were wrapped around each other with the sheets tangled at our feet. Chloe texted sometime around noon to say that she would be going to work from Caleb's and I rolled my eyes. At this rate, she could as well just move in with him. She was there most of the time anyway.Later that afternoon, Jordan asked me to get dressed because we were going out. He went into his car for a change of clothes which he claimed he always made sure to leave there ‘just in case'. When I asked what to put on, he said to look casual. We were just going to have fun. Nothing serious. He wouldn't say what kind of fun, though.I pulled on a pair of jeans and a black T-shirt. I made him pick between two sneakers and finally settled on the one he least liked. By the time that we got into his range rover, it was already past 3:00pm. No matter how much I tried, Jordan refused to tell me where we were going. We rode with the windows down. He

I woke up to small kisses being scattered across my face. The feel of his whiskers against the smooth skin of my face felt hot as hell. I smiled as I blinked my eyes open.“Someone's up early."“You look like an angel when you sleep" his voice still sounded a little groggy. As he reached for my lips with his, I rolled away from his reach, forgetting that my small bed was just spacious enough to accommodate the both of us. I landed hard on my butt, and a belly rumbling laughter exploded out of his chest.“It's not funny." I said with a pout but he wouldn't stop laughing. After a short while, I found myself struggling to keep my own smile in check. I liked the sound of his laughter. It was raw, and genuine. It occured to me that I never saw him like this when he was dealing with the outside world, just when it was the both of us. Mysterious billionaire to the rest of the world, crinkly eyed, laughing man to me. I felt my smile grow bigger. As his laugh ebbed, I picked myself off the gro

The credits rolled on our third romcom of the night. There was a saccharine pop song playing over black and white stills of the happy couple who in the real world, truly would make a terrible match.I turned to say something to Jordan and found him slumped against the head of the cushion. His head was tilted back, and his lips were slightly parted. There was a quiet rhythmic snore from deep within his chest that made me smile. He was out cold. Looked like this knight had decided that the damsel wasn't in any real distress and had chosen an easier battle: sleep.I smiled, reaching over to brush a stray lock of hair from his forehead. His breathing didn't even hitch. Careful not to wake him, I went quietly up the stairs, got an extra blanket and threw it over his still, peaceful form.My fingers lingered at his shoulder, tracing the hard line of muscle beneath his t-shirt. Even in sleep, he looked like he was ready to spring into action at any moment. The muscles in his arm were taut, I

  • To Love Again   Chapter 58

The court hearing between Kingston Enterprise and Anthony Smith of Smith Assurance rocked the internet like a storm. The Kingstons took up the case with a vengeance that Anthony hadn't expected. The hearing didn't last long. Anthony was being accused of several counts of misdemeanor with evidence that made it impossible for him to wiggle out of the situation this time. Even his shiny suit lawyer stuttered as he tried to defend his client.Good. I don't know how they'd hoped to win against the entire Kingston family with such glaring evidence incriminating Anthony, but whatever it was, they learnt quickly why the Kingstons were considered one of the most formidable families in all of New York, and perhaps, even the United States. They had connections in all the places that mattered. The ruling was for Anthony to pay a fine of one million dollars for damages against the integrity of Kingston Enterprise. He and his lawyer made it clear that they were going to appeal, but the truth was in

  • To Love Again   Chapter 57

The air was alight with joy. There was loud music playing from a state of the art sound system, and an old man stood at the grill seemingly enjoying what he was doing. Children ran about excitedly, and adults exchanged smiles and hugs. There was a table filled with cupcakes and food close to the man at the grill and everyone had a glass of wine or a bottle of beer in their hands. It was beautiful. It was the sort of beautiful chaos that I thrived in. I looked on with a smile on my face as the couple danced happily and the woman laughed at something her husband said.Brenda Lynn's 20th wedding anniversary was going perfectly and I couldn't help the contented smile that played on my lips at the sight of the fine job I'd done.I walked back into the kitchen with the empty tray in my hands. I'd taken out the last batch of canapes to add to the already full table. Already, a few guests had come in here to compliment the chicken skewers and one little girl had asked if I would make her a gi

I didn't go straight home. I headed instead to Jordan's single storey home in SoHo. I rapped on the door repeatedly until he pulled it open in a tank top and knee length shorts. He was sweaty and breathing fast, telling me that he had most likely been exercising.“Hey." He said, a little surprised.“I texted you last night." I said, my hands folded against my chest.“Okay?"“I texted you this morning too."He ran his hands through his hair. “Okay, and?"“What do you mean okay and? Why aren't you responding to my messages?" I exploded.“Because last night you asked if we were good. I didn't want to lie that we were and I didn't want to start a fight by saying that we weren't so I thought I'd let off steam and call you after.""And today?”"I've been working.”“That's not okay." I said plainly. “If you have a problem with me, we talk about it, and we trash it out. You do not ignore me to let off steam and then call me after. That's not okay.""Okay. “ He said, shoving his hands in his f

I had never seen Chloe as nervous about an outing as she was while she prepped for dinner with the Kingstons. Her hands shook as she tried to wear her earrings and I took them out of her hands. She brought me her makeup bag and asked me to do it because she wasn't sure she could do a good job. She was about to change her mind about the blue dress that we'd picked out days ago when I stepped in. I insisted that she looked perfect and helped her out finishing touches to her look.“They're going to love you." I said as I hugged her goodbye.“They better, cos they're stuck with me either way." She said in that typical Chloe way.Caleb was waiting at the door with a bouquet of flowers which she oohed and ahhed over, then handed to me to put in a vase. When they left, I breathed a sigh of relief.I loved Chloe, but on days like this, I realized why she went to parties during our college years and I stayed at home. I was just a tired girl who preferred to binge watch romcoms in her pajamas t
