Marissa's POV

I dialed my mom's number again. I'd been trying to reach her for over two weeks to no avail. Usually, she was quick to complain if I sent her allowance in the afternoon instead of the morning. This time however, it had taken a couple days, and she still hadn't said anything. That wasn't normal.

I left her a message apologizing for sending her allowance late, and asking her to respond when she got my message so I could confirmed that she was fine. That done, I got out of bed and into the bathroom.

When I got to the living almost half an hour later, Chloe was hard at work. Weird. She was cleaning the house and putting everything to rights. But Chloe never cleaned! Ever!

“Erm, what's going on?" I asked, confused.

She looked up, and flashed me a quick smile before returning to her work. “Morning, Rissa."

“What's going on?" I asked again.

“What do you mean what's going on? I'm cleaning!"

“Exactly my point, Chloe! You never clean!"

She shrugged playfully. “Well, looks like I d

The weekend was over in the blink of an eye, and Monday soon came with its tension and drama. I was starting to hate Mondays, really. The court hearings always fell on a Monday.Today, we were scheduled for 2:00pm so I went to work first and left at 1:30. Jordan hadn't come in to work today. Something about a meeting with the older Mr Kingston. As I stepped out of my car, I sighted Chloe already waiting for me outside the courthouse. She leaned lazily against her car, dressed in navy blue pants and a black shirt. She had also come from work. She was testifying today. Mr Thatcher believed that her testimony as my best friend could really help our cause. So was Dr Kyle. She was the doctor who had treated me the two times when I'd sustained injuries from Anthony's abuse. When Chloe caught sight of me, she smiled and took off her shades. “Hey, beautiful." “Hiii, Chloe." I said, hugging her. “Are you sure you want to do this?" I asked for the upteenth time."Do I look like I'm harboring a

I sat there staring at my mom like she had just materialized from space. She was here, in person, swearing to be truthful in her testimony. Her testimony against me. The whole situation almost made me laugh. Almost.Anthony's lawyer flashed Mr Thatcher a look before continuing with his questions. “Mrs Colton, how would you describe your daughter's character while growing up?”She smiled dreamily before speaking. I recognized that smile. It was deceitful. It was the smile she put on when she was remembering something that never happened.“My Marissa always was a sweet girl. She loves to be the center of attention, and might sometimes make up stories to get the attention that she desires, but it's all for a good cause."My heart plummeted to the ground. Me? Center of attention? Make up stories? But attention was the one thing that I hated most in my life so why would I want it?Mr Fletcher caught her bait. “Make up stories, Mrs Colton? Would you like to elaborate on that?”"Oh! Well, th

  • To Love Again   Chapter 38

With my head on the steering wheel, I let the tears keep flowing. I sobbed agonizingly, thinking of all the times that she'd let me down. I thought of how young I'd been when her irresponsibility forced me to be an adult. I thought of what I'd gone through in the hands of….It took almost an hour for the sobs to ebb. By this time, I had a full-on headache, and I felt a shiver course through me. I needed some air. I didn't even know where I was going, so I didn't want to keep driving.I got out of my car with wobbly legs and took in deep breaths. I knew this place. It looked like even though I hadn't been conscious of where I was headed, my head had sought the same peace that my heart craved. There was a park not far from this place where I used to go whenever I had a really bad experience with Anthony. It was almost always deserted, and it also served its purpose perfectly as my quiet place, the place where I came whenever I needed to clear my head. I hadn't been here in months, and

Jordan stood a few steps away from us, looking like my knight in all of his 3-piece-suit shining armor. He took a menacing step forward.“Move away from her."The men didn't look like they wanted to leave, but they didn't look eager to remain there either. They seemed to be weighing their options. “Who the hell are you?" One of them finally mustered the courage to ask. It happened suddenly. One second, Jordan stood on his side of the road, the next, he was covering the distance in two strides and picking up the man who was only slightly smoking than him by the collar. The other one took a few steps back.“Listen to me, you moron. When I say move away from her, you move away from her without asking me any questions. Do you understand that?" He shook visibly under Jordan's strength and nodded his head. Jordan tossed him to the ground and sent him rolling a bit before he jumped to his feet and scurried after his friend. He waited a few seconds to confirm that the hooligans were truly

"Jordan, please stay.”My words stopped him in his tracks, and he turned around to look at me. His eyes seemed to be searching mine as he said, "Okay.”He came back to the bedside, looked at me again and then he settled into a corner of the bed. I pulled the covers down and sat up in bed. For a few minutes, we stayed as we were, not saying anything to each other. Then I finally broke the silence. “I still don't know how you knew where exactly to look for me."He was quiet for a while before responding. He looked at me briefly, and then looked away fast, like he didn't really want to see me.“I told you it was Chloe. She sounded very worried when she called me. She told me what happened earlier, and said that you'd asked for some time alone. She, Caleb, and I split up in different directions, and looked for you for almost an hour before she called me to say that she remembered coming to meet you at that park once, almost a year ago. I was closer to the place so I said I'd check.”I lis

I blinked my eyes open as sunlight spilled through the curtains. I woke slowly, my body felt heavy with a calmness that felt foreign. I hadn't felt this much peace in a while. His arm was still draped over my waist, his breath warm against my neck. For a moment, I didn’t move, didn’t blink, I lay there, afraid that the slightest shift might shatter the fragile peace of this moment.Jordan lay unguarded in his sleep, no furrowed brow, no clenched jaw, just quiet. His lashes were long for a man, and beautiful too. I traced my hands slowly over his brows. His eyelashes fluttered. A low hum rumbled in his chest as he stirred, arm tightening reflexively around me. When his eyes opened, sleep-blurred and dark, they locked onto mine instantly.“Good morning,” he murmured, his voice groggy with sleep. “Morning.” My fingers brushed a crease the pillow had left on his cheek. He caught my hand, pressed a kiss to my palm. “You’ve been staring.”“Only for a few minutes." I said with a smile.“H

I looked up at him when the knock came a second time. “Are you expecting someone?"“No, but it's not unusual for me to get a visitor at this time. Could be someone from the office. Give me a minute." He said, getting up to his feet and going to the door. He pulled it open.Chloe stood at the entrance with Cal behind her. “Where's she? Why didn't she come home last night? Why wouldn't she answer my calls?”She stopped mid-sentence as Jordan stepped aside, revealing me at the dining table with a shaky smile on my face. Her eyes widened, and then she was across the room in a heartbeat, pulling me into a bone-crushing hug.“Oh my God, Rissa,” she breathed, her voice trembling. “I was so scared. I thought… I didn’t know what had happened to you, and you wouldn't answer my calls.” “I’m okay,” I said, my voice muffled against her shoulder. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to worry you.”She pulled back, her hands gripping my shoulders as she searched my face. “You don’t get to do that. You don’t g

  • To Love Again   Chapter 43

Chloe and I spent the rest of the day the way that we enjoyed doing most. We sat with chocolate flavored popcorn and drinks and watched cliche romcoms with a blanket over our legs. We laughed too hard at terrible dialogue and cried at the same sad ending we'd seen five times before, with our knees knocking together whenever one of us reached for the tissue box. Rain tapped against the windows outside, the kind of steady patter that made the world outside feel far away, the kind of steady patter that caused us to huddle together under the single blanket, holding on to each other.Suddenly, in the middle of a movie that was playing, she spoke loudly. "Pause it," she demanded, pointing at the screen where the romcom heroine was mid-cliché stumbling into the male lead’s arms. I hit the remote. "What?" "You’re doing it again." “Doing what, exactly?” I responded. She reached over and grabbed my wrist, turning it palm-up. My thumbnail was ragged, the skin around it pink and irritat

After that initial awe had worn off, excitement took over. I wanted to see the entire place!I walked to the middle of the room, spun around, and shouted, “This is mine! I own this building!”My voice echoed off the walls, and Jordan laughed.“Damn right you do.”He spun me around in the center of the empty room and our laughter filled the air.We didn't go straight home. We went to a park filled with noisy children and lovesick teenagers. The place was livelier than usual, and although it took some teasing, Jordan finally dropped his almighty Kingston cap and joined in the fun.He joined me on the rollercoaster ride and laughed heartily while I screamed. He liked it so much that he went for a second ride when I got off the ride. He said he hadn't done anything like it since he was a child. We ran around the park charging bubbles and trying to pop them. Later, we simply sat on the floor, with me lying back against his chest and him wrapping me in his giant arms.By the time that we fi

Breakfast went smoothly. We all had our pancakes with hot chocolate, and chatted happily over insignificant things. There was something about a full belly, hot chocolate, and laughter shared between the two most important people in my life that made the world feel… weightless. Like I was walking on air. Like I could do anything. After breakfast, Chloe hurried upstairs to take a zoom call while Jordan and I talked through clearing the dishes. When we finished, I dried the plates and placed them back in the drawer. Jordan relaxed against the same counter that he'd kissed me on less than an hour ago, staring at me like I was some prized piece of art that only he had access to.“You ready?” he asked, his lips twitching into that little smirk that always managed to melt something in me.“Ready for what?” I replied, feigning cluelessness, though I knew full well what he meant. He'd been talking about this ‘somewhere’ that he wanted to take me to since he got here.I wondered what it was thi

Jordan gave me 20 minutes to get dressed before leaving. I took almost 40 minutes. What kind of woman would I be If I got ready under the exact time he gave?Downstairs, Chloe sat at the dining table hard at work. She wore an oversized shirt over black biker shorts, and drew her knees up to her chin as she typed furiously on her laptop. Her natural blond hair was up in a messy bun, and she wore her wire rimmed glasses which she'd hated since she first got them in senior year, high school. She looked hot as hell! She took her eyes off work, and turned her attention to me briefly when I got downstairs.“Hey, beautiful."“Hey, beautiful." I returned with a smile.“You look good."I did a 360 spin for her and she hooted and whistled. I was wearing a simple floral dress that was snatched at the top, and flowed regally to my knees from beneath my bust. It was simple and classy.“Thanks. Where's Jordan?"“In the kitchen." She said, pointing with her finger. “He offered to make breakfast.”We

I didn't get home until evening. Brenda's book club's tea party was only a few days away, and I had to meet with the ladies for some last minute adjustments to the menu. I'd never wanted to impress anyone like I wanted to impress these women. They were some high caliber people, and this was my chance to win them over before the business opened.I sighed and kicked off my shoes before plopping onto the sofa in the sitting room. I still didn't have a name it. I'd stopped stressing over it, thinking that it would come to me naturally, but at this point, it looked like I might be needing to start making conscious efforts to get a name again. We couldn't have a grand opening without a business name now, could we?I heard someone rush down the stairs and looked up to see Chloe with a box of steaming noodles in her hands.“You're alive!"I chuckled. Why wouldn't I be? It's not like Layla had claws or fangs or anything. Plus it had been almost six years since we left college. We were all diff

Chloe made more noise than a hurricane as she rushed down the stairs with her bag in one hand and her six inch tall shoes in the other. For someone who was already tall, it was interesting how she never wore anything other than heels.“I’m late. I’m late. I’m so damn late,” she muttered as she skidded into the kitchen.I was leaning against the counter, sipping coffee and reading a recipe draft on my tablet. She glanced at me, then did a double-take.“You’re dressed.”“I am.” I said with a small smile. She narrowed her eyes at me as she shoved her arm into the sleeve of her coat. “That's suspicious. Didn't you say y'all found a replacement and you don't have to go to work anymore? What are you going to do?"I laughed. Suspicious indeed. "I'm not going to work.”"Then where?” Obviously impatient, but not willing to leave without knowing where I was going."I'm meeting Layla.”Her eyes bulged. "Layla as in Layla Freeman? Same Layla that we ran into a couple nights ago?”"Same same.” I r

Chapter 81Chloe and Caleb were already seated at a table when we walked into the restaurant. It buzzed with life and I smiled at the sight. This was the same restaurant where I'd first seen Jordan. It almost felt like it had been ages since that day when Chloe and I sat across from each other, and I stepped out to take my mother's call. The scowl that had been on my face when I came back in after that encounter with Jordan outside still made me laugh till date. The fact that he'd actually asked me to ‘look after myself'. Oh, the nerve of the man! I chuckled and glanced at Jordan. I wondered if he remembered too. We walked over to the table where Chloe and Caleb sat, already sipping from the cocktails in front of us.Chloe saw us first. She hurried to her feet and pulled me in for a hug. She hugged Jordan next. Caleb had a big smile plastered on his face as he rose to hug me too. God, had we all missed that smile. It is true what they say. Being with the person that you love makes a

Elizabeth blinked as Jordan strolled with a quiet authority towards us. Even she seemed taken aback by his question.“I asked you a question, Elizabeth Colton. How much do you want?”She quickly collected herself and put on an indifferent air. "Well, she owes me a whole lot.”"I do not!” I said, gritting my teeth. What did she mean I owed her a lot? God, the woman never could pass up on an opportunity to milk me.Jordan raised his brows at her. His gaze didn't waver. “I asked you a question. How much?"Couldn't he see that I was seething? Why was he asking how much she wanted? She shrugged. “100,000."My jaw dropped. 100,000 dollars?"You freaking thief!” I shrieked, but neither of them seemed to be listening to meJordan slipped a hand into his breast pocket and took out a checkbook while Elizabeth looked on gleefully. I looked in stunned silence as he wrote calmly and deliberately on a single page, tore it out, and held it out to my mother. I moved fast. Just as she was about to tak

I dropped my resignation with a two week notice which meant that even though I'd resigned, I was still working until we could find a replacement for Jordan's assistant. We'd interviewed a couple people but none of them seemed suitable for the role.Meanwhile, I spent all of my free time searching desperately for a place to set up the business. I'd decided to go a step further in my plans. I wasn't just going to be catering to clients. I would make the space into a cozy bakery of some sorts. Cupcakes, pastries, scones, and if I could manage it, perhaps coffee.I knew it was a lot to aim for, but a certain someone had taught me to never let my mind limit me. If I put my heart to it, then I could most certainly do it. Nancy. Now, the next step was finding a good space that wouldn't cost too much. I was on a budget after all.I found the place on a Friday evening. I’d already seen three other options that day that made me want to set something on fire, and I had no doubts that even the re

Jordan's expression was unreadable. He took a step back, and shoved both hands in his pockets.“Erm… congratulations.I cocked my head at him. I'd been expecting better. “Thank you." I said, my voice laced with uncertainty. He nodded and remained quiet.“Is there a problem, Jordan?" I asked.“No." He said, shaking his head. He rocked back and forth on his heels, his hands still in his pockets.“Well?" I snapped, suddenly impatient. “If there's something you'd like to say to me, just say it."He ran a hand through his dark hair, and moved to sit at the edge of his desk. "I don't have a problem with you leaving Kingston, Marissa. If anything, I support your decisions. You know that.”"Then what's the problem?”"I just want to be sure that you've thought this through. Marissa, starting a business is no joke. It would demand—”"I've thought it through.” I said, cutting him off.“Marissa, I —”"What is this, Jordan!? I don't get it.
