I spent the rest of the day sitting in front of my laptop and looking up Duran State Penitentiary. The articles I read about the prison sent chills down my spine. The prison is run by gang leaders and almost every day an inmate gets killed or injured. Being the most overcrowded prison in our country, cells meant for only 22 men are often occupied by 50 men and some of them sleep on the floor and share 1 commodity. How is Yoké supposed to stay in such a place? One article I read said that new inmates are the most at risk of getting harmed by older inmates unless they join a gang.
Yoké must be feeling really scared right now. He doesn't know about gangs, and a prison environment he'd probably never even imagined before. What is he thinking of me right now? Does he think I've forgotten about him? I need to see him. I need to go see him and just assure him that I'm trying all that I can to get him out of that hell hole. He needs to know that I'll stop at nothing to make sure that he is out of there.
I looked at the picture of a group of men overcrowding the prison cell for the last time, shut my laptop and then got up.
I took my coat from the hanger and my phone. When I got out of the office Penny threw her head back.
"You knock off at 6 and it's 4!" She said. "I know you won't listen to me but please don't leave again."
"Penny I'll be back now."
"Okay." She gave me a fed-up face. "You know Nathan is always coming over here. What should I tell him when he asks for you?"
"Uh... just tell him that I went back to my apartment because I'm not feeling well."
Penny looked at me for a while and then bit the butt of her pen.
"What's up with you?" She asked me, frowning. "Is everything okay?"
"Yeah." I said. "I'll be back now."
"Look, I know we're not best friends or something like that," she said fixing her spectacles. "I'm just your secretary and I know I'm really being a cliché right now but if ever you want to talk about anything, I'm here. If anything is bothering you..."
"Yeah. Sure." I tried giving her a smile but didn't succeed. "Don't worry, everything is good."
She gave me a tight unconvinced smile. "If you say so."
I went to the elevator and pressed the down arrow. I waited for a few minutes and then the doors opened. I held my breath as I saw my dad standing in the elevator.
"Just who I came to see." He said stepping out of the elevator.
"Dad!" I said, more with shock than excitement.
"Where you off to?" He asked me, putting his heavy arm around me as we walked back to my office.
"Uh... was going for coffee." I told him.
"At 3 in the afternoon?" He asked me. "Since when have you become such a coffee person."
"Ha-ha." I tried laughing.
"Can you please ask the coffee boy to bring us 2 cups of coffee?" My dad told Penny.
"Sure Mr. Raphael." Penny responded.
I unwillingly followed him back into my office as Penny and I exchanged looks. He took a seat on the leather couch and fixed his suit jacket.
"How comfortable this couch is." He said crossing one leg over the other, in a 4.
I returned my coat to the hanger and hanged my purse on the same hook. Why is he here?
"You ever have time to read those books on your shelf?" He asked me, grinning.
I looked over at the varnished shelf in the corner with lots of novels and textbooks piled neatly.
I shrugged. "Not really."
"You don't look happy." He told me. "Is everything okay? Or is the workload weighing a bit?"
I came to join him on the couch. I had to brighten up my face, he was already suspecting that something was bothering me.
"Hey dad, what happened to those clients you were dealing with?" I asked grimacing.
"That's the news I came to deliver." He smiled. "We should be opening up a Champaign bottle right now, not waiting for coffee."
"Nah." I smiled shaking my head. "I don't seem to enjoy alcohol anymore."
"Coffee is for sad occasions, such as funerals." He said. "But it's cool."
"So, what happened?" I asked him.
"The deal is sealed." He said high fiving me. "All thanks to you."
"To me?" I laughed. "How so?"
"They only sealed the deal because I have a pretty daughter or else-"
"Dad..." I laughed.
"Just kidding." He laughed. Whenever he laughed his eyes closed up. Something about his laugh always made me feel so bubbly inside, so happy. It satisfies me to see my father happy. "They sealed the deal because of what you did. I made them believe that productivity is our number one priority and that we don't let anything hinder that."
"So, I'm not pretty?" I smirked.
He laughed so hard. "Oh, come on."
We laughed for long. Rob knocked on the door and then entered with our coffee on a tray.
"You are more than pretty." My dad smiled. "You're beautiful."
"What's the difference?" I asked him, just for conversation.
"Pretty is only on the face, but beautiful is whole. It includes all your aspects. Your heart being the greatest aspect."
"That's really sweet, dad." I said leaning over and hugging him.
"That's because you are my sweetest daughter." He responded.
Rob cleared his throat so that he could get our attention.
"Coffee has arrived sir and madam." He said.
My dad looked up at him. "This boy should get a raise because of his punctuality."
Rob smiled nervously.
"He brings me coffee at the same time every single day." Dad said taking the coffee from the tray and giving it to me and then taking one for himself.
"I would really appreciate that, sir." Rob said holding his tray under his arm.
"I'll discuss it with the manager of the labour department; that being my daughter over here."
Rob smiled and then looked at me with hopeful eyes. I returned his smile and rolled my eyes. He winked at me. I checked to see if my dad had seen but he didn't, he was blowing into his coffee cup.
"Excuse me." Rob said and then left the office. When he closed the door behind him, my dad and I watched him fist pump the air.
We broke out laughing.
"He reminds me of myself when I was younger." Raphael told me. "That was always my reaction every time I achieved successful news or got ideas for my business plan."
"Do you still have that reaction?" I asked him, smiling. "I mean, you have it all now."
My dad thought for a while. "Yes, I have it all but that doesn't mean I don't get happy when I achieve. I still get happy because now it's about maintaining."
I nodded.
"But to answer your question, no. Now I just pop Champaign to it. In this case you prefer coffee so I'm drinking to it."
We clicked our cups together.
"To more success." I said.
He nodded. "To more success."
I looked at the watch on my wrist. In one of the articles it said that the visiting time is from 8am to 4pm. I've already run out of time. The state Penitentiary was all the way down the city, close to the sea.
After taking several sips of his coffee dad leaned back on the couch. "You know, it feels good to sit like this with you." He said."I've been getting that a lot lately, from Nathan." I smiled."Well, I just wish Alice could have been here too. But she's a whole other person.""She just prefers something different. Something more... fun, I guess.""She takes after Leticia." He said sipping his coffee. "You take after me.""But a year ago I was like her too." I said holding the warm cup close to my body. "You didn't like it.""Yeah... but your choice of teaching wasn't as humiliating as hers. You are more sensible.""Well, I am older." I shrugged."Yeah..." Raphael sighed. "That's why I want you to work and get enough experience. Because you'll be the heiress of our companies. This is the headquarters, if you can manage this you can manage all our 12 companies in Duran."I nodded. "I'm trying my best every day.""Yeah, no pressure." He smiled. "I'm not planning to retire anytime soon.
The piercing sound of my alarm clock jerked me awake. Trying to fall asleep was like starting a war in my head; with thoughts of Yoké fighting off every bit of sleep, with questions I didn’t know the answers to. Is he okay? Was he able to sleep? Or is he struggling like me, maybe spending the whole night wondering when I’d show up to take him away from that awful place… But as usual, sleep always conquers.Although I set my alarm clock for two hours earlier than I usually wake up, I was full of energy and wide awake as soon as I heard it ring. I turned on the radio, wishing that I could turn the volume much higher than it already could go. I felt so excited! I would be seeing Yoké today!I jumped into the shower, spending more time than I would on a regular day. I made sure to take a lot more time doing my makeup and hair too.I’ve watched hundreds of romantic movies of when the girl and the guy reunite after a breakup, misunderstanding or whatever. I’ve seen their smile, from ear to e
I took the lift straight up to the last floor. It took me a long while to get to the 40th floor because the lift stopped at almost all the floors. The workers kept coming in and out. I didn’t care one bit that I was not returning their fake smiles. Even the long drive back to the office wasn’t long enough to calm me down. I was so disappointed that it made me upset. When I got to the 40th floor I was the only one left in the lift. The whole 40th floor was my dad’s and his alone: his huge office, waiting area, secretary’s desk closest to his office and his two bodyguards. One of the bodyguards was standing by the lift and the other standing outside his office door. I don’t even know why he brings his bodyguards in here, there is a security guard on each floor. I remember having to beg my father to not have two big guys follow me around. After weeks of begging him, he finally allowed me to only have one bodyguard and he be my driver too. He chose Finn for me. Finn was not allowed to foll
I woke up around 7 on that Sunday morning. I made sure my phone was on so that I didn't miss any calls from Steven. After an hour of lying in bed and checking my phone a thousand times, I finally decided to do a breathing exercise just to try and relax. I felt like I was about to get a panic attack. While doing the exercises, I felt better but as soon as I finished, I found myself anticipating the result of the case again. What if? What if we lose? What will I do if we lose?Although it was still early, I decided to go and take a shower just to keep my mind distracted on something else other than Yoké. When I was about to step into the shower I heard a knock on the front door. I heard Rosalie open the door. I hope that it isn't my father. When I came to the door, she was standing there with a bouquet of roses in her hand. Pink roses."Good morning, ma'am." She greeted, holding the flowers towards me.I frowned moving the flowers to one side, looking for a note. There was. The flowers w
“I took in account that this is the accused’s first felony and hereby decide that he can be let out on bail. But if the accused is to commit another felony within 5 years, his punishment will be tight.” She banged her gavel. “This case is closed.” I almost screamed with excitement. I even hugged Finn! He didn’t hug me back, obviously. I didn’t care. I jumped out of my seat and struggled out of the bench. I ran towards Steven and hugged him too.“Oh my God!” I said placing my hands on my head, my mouth in an ‘o’. I still couldn’t believe this.“We did it.” Steven was smiling at me. He didn’t look excited, just wore a professional smile.“Oh my God…” I said. It had still not completely registered. It all just felt like a dream, and I was afraid I would wake up anytime and have to face the odd reality. “His free…”“Yes, he is.” Steven told me. “He’s being let out on bail.”“How much is it?” I asked him.“The bail is paid down at administration, you’ll find out there.”“Can you take me th
Yoké was asking me for his child. It then occurred to me that he didn’t know anything, not what happened. I had to tell him everything. It is his right to know and here he is demanding an answer.I instinctively looked around as I realized that we were in public. The officers with nothing better to do at the gate were already watching us. Dad had warned me about the public, about protecting our company and not giving people reason to doubt us. What worse reason than to be here in front of a prison with an ex-convict demanding for the child that was taken away from him? A child he now wanted to meet.“Yoké, we can’t talk here.” I told him. “Let’s go to my apartment.”“I don’t want to go anywhere with you, I want to know where my child is.” His voice firm and his face still with that frown.“I know, but right now we are in public. Look how the officers are watching us.” I said attempting to take his hand to lead him to the car, but he shrugged it away.“I don’t care about that, okay. I j
Yoké frowned as if he was trying to figure me out.“Why aren’t you telling me where my Risa is?” He asked me. “Who is she with?”A tear rolled down my eye. I quickly wiped it away, took a deep breath in and held my breath. “She’s gone, Yoké.”“What do you mean she’s gone? Gone to where?”“Our Risa is dead-" I couldn’t control myself anymore, I let the river I had been holding back all these months finally flow. I began to cry. “She was born still.” His facial expression didn’t change, he just continued to look at me with that frown.“What are you saying?” He asked me, shaking his head like I was saying something that he couldn’t believe. “Yoké, she didn’t cry. She died in my stomach. I didn’t even get a chance to hold her in my arms.” I told him. “I didn’t even see what colour her eyes were…” Yoké’s mouth fell, and it stayed that way for a while before he shook his head. “No. That’s not true.”I clapped my hand over my mouth as I almost cried out loud. I felt so heart broken, the wh
There were dark marks all over his back and arms. I came to sit next to him on the couch to have a better look, but he began fixing his sweater. He pulled his hoody back on and sat with his arms on his thighs and his head in his hands.“Who did this to you?” I asked him.“They would have killed me if the officers didn’t walk in on time. They told me that that was going to be my last day on earth.” Yoké said. “But I’m fine.”“Do you remember their faces?”He shook his head. “It doesn’t matter-”“Yes, it does, Yoké.” I told him. “I’ll report each one of them for doing this to you and make sure they never set foot outside those walls ever again. You could have died.”“Living… dead, why do you care now?” He shrugged.“Yoké-”“Genesis, I tried getting to you so many times.” He said, his voice low now. “It was impossible. At work I couldn’t even get to you because we were not allowed upstairs at HR. I couldn’t even wait for you outside because our exits are different. You managers have your
"We have nothing left because of him." Dad said, staring at the ground. "I can't believe I trusted him that much.""Who is it, dad?" I asked."None other than your very own half brother, slash cousin, slash no relation at all, Francis.""What?" I asked. "What is he looking for? He wants to make money out of Toko Village meanwhile he is stealing from us and still gets a basic salary on top of that. How can someone love money this much? So much that you'd steal from your own..."Alice and Yoké joined us, they had heard the news too."I knew that that sneaky guy was dodgy." Alice said as she stopped behind the couch Delilah was sitting on and leaned on it.
Uma was awake, and as soon as we entered his ward and he saw us, he smiled, looked away and began sobbing. He covered his hand over his eyes and sobbed. "Aww." We chorused in unison, as if we had planned to. "Don't cry babe." He's girlfriend, Esther said, quickly walk-runned to him. She sat on the side of his bed and hugged him. She hugged him for a while as he continued crying. "We are here..." She told him, she looked sad too. "We love you and we'll always be here for you." Yoké stood behind next to his bed, the opposit side to where Esther was and placed his hands on the cotside. I came over to her side and she stood up to let
I stopped at the door way before entering the living room. He was in a navy blue suit, standing next to the couch, instead of sitting. Rosalie had just brought him his drink. He briefly pointed towards the table where she was supposed to place his drink. I went to sit on the couch opposite the one dad was standing next to. Yoké stayed at the room door post and leaned against it.Dad paced to and fro and stopped where he had started."So we've lost more than half of our clients..." Dad said, voice still powerful although the sad message.I kept quiet and watched him."We've lost most of our projects we were busy with, the clients asked to cancel their contracts or else they'd take us to court. Most of our employees, has resigned because they see the downfall. They know that we won't be able to pay them. Only the loyal ones remain."He then shrugged. "Maybe they're not even loyal. Maybe they are just
We stopped a block away from the motel just incase there were people put in place by Nathan to watch Yoké. But we could see the motel from here. It was a cheap old building. So cheap that the light of the ‘M’ in ‘Motel was flickering so bad that you’d think it would just die any moment. “So what will happen is you’ll give me Nathan’s phone so that when I get in, I can ask him which room number he is at.” The woman half turned to talk to me.“But I’m going in with you.” I told her.She shook her head. “I may not have been entirely loyal to your father but I’m not bad enough of a worker to put your life in potential danger.”“What do you mean danger? I’m—”“I have a gun. Although I’m going in there alone, I know how to defend myself up to a certain point. We don’t know whether Nathan’s men are in there, or around here, in some building, possibly watching us right now. What happens if they fire at us?”“They’ll never fire at me—”“You d
"Yoké...""Gen— Genesis is that— oh my, are you okay?”“I’m fine Yoké. I’m fine.”“What— how did you— Did Nathan put you on the phone with me?”“No Yoké. You don’t ever have to worry about Nathan ever again. He’s in custody…”“Nathan is in custody?”“He’s gone. He’ll never stand between us again. It’s all good now.”“No, no, no Geny. You don’t know Nathan, he’ll never be ‘gone’. You have to hang up right now and never call this number again.”“I’m telling you, my love. It’s over for him. The police have him and my dad knows about him—”“Look Nathan can’t be in custody. We have a— Look, I’m sorry Geny but you and I can’t ever be together. It will never work. Just p
I slammed the car door and fell back on the back seat. The woman, who was supposed to shut the already shut door for me gave me an unbelievable look and then got into the driver's seat."So what happened to your twin? Isn't he going to come with us?" I asked, bitterly."I understand you're upset that your father won't help you with your boyfriend but you don't have to take it out on me, or the car door." She told me looking back at me.We maintained eye contact for a while until she turned back and fastened her seat belt. She started the car and we were on the road again after a few minutes.I was too angry to care about how much this woman was looking at me in the rear view mirror."What?" I suddenly asked after a while of more rear view eye contact. She suddenly stopped the car causing me to fall forward and hit against her seat."Hey!" I shouted as I sat back in my seat. "Are you crazy?""Look, I'm not sure whether or not Mr
“Come here, my love.” Nathan told me. “Come take a seat next to me.”“I don’t want to sit next to you.” I told him. “I want you to tell me which plane Yoké is planning to take and when.”“Gen, your dad will always choose me over Dan. Look, all this is a misunderstanding. Once I speak to him things can go back to the way they were. We could still get married and what happens today would never come to light. We’d still be the world’s favorite couple.”I didn’t even know what to say to him. “Are you crazy?” Those were the only words that could leave my mouth.“I’m crazy about you, yes. My fiancée.”“Nathan, tell me which plane Yoké is planning to take. Please.”“Why do you need him when I’m here?” He asked me.Just then, two cops walked in."Is he ready for us now?" One asked."Yes, sir." One of the nurses answered."Okay." The policeman said and began unlocking the cuff on Nathan's arm to the bed.
When they got out of the car and came to open the door for me, I didn’t even try to fight them off, what was the use? No matter how much I would try, they’d still have the upper hand. And besides even if I manage to get away, how do I get home without a cellphone or money? There hasn’t been a building in sight since we’ve hit the road.“I’ll walk myself.” I told them as they opened the door for me.They exchanged looks. What was it with these two and looking at each other as if they could pass little messages with just one glance?“Look, if you try to run, we won’t go after you,” The male officer told me. “The distance back is not walkable, you’ll starve out there and die and then your family will never hear of you again. So don’t try anything stupid, okay?”I didn’t respond.“You have a better chance of surviving this than running away.” The lady
When I got back to my senses, my first instinct was to unlock the doors and get as far away as I could from this car and Nathan. Nathan was still crying out in agony, trying to ease his pain by clutching onto his wrist with the unharmed hand. I reached out and pressed the unlock button on the stirring wheel. He didn’t try to stop me, just continuing yelling in pain. I opened the door on my side. As I was about to step out, I remembered, Nathan was our only way to getting Rissa back. I reached into his suit pocket where I had seen him put his phone back after the call with one of his men.“What are you doing, Genesis?” He asked me but did not try to fight me off. “Help me.”I began searching the pockets of his jacket for the phone.“Help me, Genesis.” He said again, looking at me helplessly as I searched his pockets. “I love you.”“Freeze!” I looked up to see a policemen on Nathan’s si
