I got down from the bend, wincing when I felt the undeniable ache in between my legs. I saw a paper on the nightstand and I went to pick it up. The handwriting was cursive and I wondered if this person was a pampered kid while growing up.
‘I left for work. Take your time and leave when you’re ready. Last night was…unexpected’
I crumpled the paper and buried my face in my hands. Who did I sleep with? I didn’t even know his name. I closed my eyes and an image of a man popped up on my head. Green eyes…
I remembered him! I had met him at my apartment building before. But I can’t remember when….and then I met him yesterday and he gave me the night of my life? Was he stalking me?
My phone!
I searched for my bag and found it by the bedside. I grabbed it and fished out my phone. I switched it on and cringed when I saw a lot of missed calls from Yvonne. My phone was flooded with text messages from her too. I opened the text messages and read them.
The first ones were random check-ins and pictures she took with some guys. But is I read more, it was obvious she was worried.
‘Did you leave with a random guy? Veronica!’
‘CALL ME NOW!’
“I’m dead,” I mumbled as I dialed Yvonne’s number. It rang twice before she picked up.
“WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU?”
I winced at her piercing sound. “Lower your voice!” I groaned as I rubbed my temple. She scoffed. “I don’t know where I am,” I told her as I looked around the large room. The walls were a light shade of gray, matching the marble tiles. The design was obviously picked out and this guy really had a nice taste.
“Are you even listening?”.
I jumped at the sound of Yvonne’s voice, “Yes?” I heard her sigh and I could picture her rubbing her temples. I was giving her a hard time.
“I thought you didn’t do one night stand,” she said to me. I pursed my lips. I thought so too. But here I was, in an unknown man’s bed. I only knew how he looked like, I didn’t know his name.
“You can’t blame me. He was hot and I was horny,” I defended. She chuckled at my words. I wasn’t lying. Who would turn down a pair of green eyes and a hard chest? Not me.
“So it was good?” she asked giddily.
“That’s an understand. I’m beyond sore,” I told her and we both laughed. More like she cackled.
“Compare both men,” she said with a devilish snicker and I rolled my eyes. We both knew the answer. Berlin wasn’t bad in bed, but always wanted it to be about his pleasure, not mine. I guess it was because I was nothing to him, just a rat in his trap.
Pushing away my thoughts, I got up from the bed. “I’ll call or text you when I get home. I need to get going,” I said to her. She hummed.
“Be safe and never make me worry like that again,” she warned and I giggled.
“Yes, ma’am ,” I faked saluted and she hummed in satisfaction before handing up. I placed my phone down and went to the bathroom. I saw a spare toothbrush and I smiled a little. I guess this man was thoughtful.
I looked in the mirror and my eyes widened when I saw my neck was decorated with hickeys. “What in the world?” I gasped and pulled off the shirt. The scent of cedarwood filled my nose as I took it off.
Hickeys were on my shoulders and on my thighs. My cheeks heated as I remembered events from last night.
“Bad girl!” I scolded myself and proceeded to brush my teeth. I took shower and got dressed in my last night’s dress before walking out of the large house. Thankfully, his house was not in a secluded place so I could order an Uber.
The first thing I did when I got home was sleep. My muscles were screaming at me and I was hungry, but I needed to sleep first.
I woke up to a knocking on my door. I sighed and went to open the door. My eyes widened when I saw Berlin. “How may I help you?” I crossed my arms across my chest.
He looked at me like he wanted to rip me apart. “We need to talk,” he said and walked in, closing the door behind him like he owned the place.
“I didn’t say you could walk in,” I glared at his back. He scoffed and turned around to look at me.
“You really are a spoilt bitch, do you know that?” he said with hatred dripping from his words.
I chuckled sarcastically, rolling my eyes. “What else do you know that I don’t seem to know?” I taunted. He clenched his jaw has his fists balled up.
“Are you happy now? You’ve ruined my reputation!” he barked at me. I let out an indifferent yawn and walked past him. But he grabbed my arm harshly, pulling me to him.
“Stop playing with me!” he yelled in my face. I pulled myself back from him and brushed my hair away from my face as I glared at him.
“So you know what it looks like to be played? Get out of my house!” I spat at him. I could tell he was aggravated that I kept standing up to him because it was something I never did.
He chuckled menacingly and stalked towards me. “You are going to regret this. I will make you and your parents pay a mighty price,” he stated and I snorted.
“Do whatever you like, Berlin. Get the hell out of my house before I call the police,” I retorted.
He was about to say something when the door opened. Yvonne walked in. She saw the situation and her eyes widened as her jaw dropped. Then her eyes narrowed at Berlin as she held up her phone.
“Step away from her and get lost or I call the police,” she glared at him. Irritated, Berlin looked between both of us and stepped away.
“You both are sick! You will regret ever crossing me!” he declared as he went to the door. Yvonne stepped aside as she flashed him the finger.
“Who cares, douche bag. Enjoy your time with the love of your life,” she mocked and slammed the door in his face and locked it before he could react. He banged it and she burst out laughing before approaching me.
I shook my head as we went to sit on the couch. “I brought food,” it was then I noticed the paper bags in her hands. She was always my savior in times like this.
“I love you!” I squealed and hugged her making her laugh.
What would I ever do without her?
Three months had passed, and they were, without a doubt, the worst months of my life. I had left my father’s company, hoping to find a fresh start, a place where I could prove myself on my own terms. But I hadn’t expected this—being turned down by every company I applied to. My résumé was impressive, yet somehow, nobody seemed to be hiring. The rejection emails became a routine, a painful reminder of my new reality. But last week, everything changed. Yvonne, my best friend and saving grace, had called me with a glimmer of hope. “There’s an opening for a P.A. at TerraLink,” she had said excitedly. It was the break I had been desperately waiting for. Without wasting a second, I drove straight to the TerraLink building, heart pounding with the possibility of finally achieving my dream. My father had always refused to let me work there, insisting on keeping me under his wing. But this was my chance, my one shot at independence. To cut the story short—I got the job. “That will be all for today. Don’t forget the changes I made. I want a revised version on my desk by tomorrow morning,” Mr. Railway announced, his voice crisp and commanding. Everyone around the table nodded in unison, gathering their belongings as they rose from their seats. I watched him, the way his fingers danced over his phone as he typed—elegant, swift, almost mesmerizing. Everything about him was attractive, a dangerous distraction I couldn’t afford.Swallowing my errant thoughts, I stood up, smoothed my skirt, and walked out of the conference room. If he was determined to act like that night had never happened, then I had no problem doing the same.Back in my office, I let out a sigh of relief. So, how was your first day?” Yvonne asked, walking into the kitchen with a paper bag in hand. My brow arched in curiosity as she pulled out a bottle of wine.“Really, Yvonne? Wine on a weeknight?” I teased, amused by her antics. She hugged the bottle to her chest like it was her most prized possession, her lips forming a pout.“Of course! Today was a success for both of us. I landed a wealthy client, and you survived your first day with Neil Railway. That definitely calls for a celebration,” she declared, kissing the bottle before setting it on the kitchen island.I shook my head and returned my attention to my laptop. Even though I had come home late from work, I still had a few emails to respond to before calling it a night.“What did you order?” she asked, rummaging around for glass cups. I nearly tripped when I got to the door of Mr. Railway’s office. “Keep it together, Vera,” I whispered to myself and knocked before walking in. Mr. Railway was at his desk with his coffee in his hand. He relaxed into the chair while his eyes were glued to his laptop.“Good morning, sir,” I greeted as I approached him and stood in front of his desk. He locked with mine, piercing my soul and sending a shiver down my spine. He wore a black shirt that hinted at the muscular build beneath, paired with dark gray slacks. His blazer was draped over his chair, exuding effortless power.“Did you set the meeting time with the press?” His deep voice sent a pleasant jolt through me, making me weak in my knees.“Yes, sir. I woke up to the loud ringing of my phone. My head rang as I searched for it on my nightstand, wanting to get rid of the loudness. I finally found it and picked up. “What?” I snapped in annoyance, my eyes still closed as I rubbed my temples with my free hand. “What a nice way to talk to your boss, Ms. Maslow,” Mr. Railway’s deep voice exploded in my head making me jolt into a sitting position. I lost my balance and fell off the bed with a loud thud. “Ouch!” I cried in pain when I hit my forehead on my nightstand. Another cry left me as the pain shot through my head making me groan loudly. My eyes snapped open as I remembered I was still on a call with Mr. Railway. Embarrassment filled me and I was tempted to hang up. I covered my face in shame, not saying anything as I tried to hide myself in the silence. “Veronica?” My ears perked up and my fingers parted to let my eyes peek through. Did he just call my name? Like my name? “Sir?” my voice sounded so awful that it made me cringe
“Do you like it?”I looked at Yvonne who was looking at me expectantly. I looked back at my reflection in the mirror and turned so I could see the dress from other angle. It was beautiful, simple and yet exquisite.“Yes, I do. The fabric is heavenly,” I said and she clapped happily.“I designed it just for you!” My friend squealed as she got up to her feet and approached me. I was glad she was happy. And appreciated that she designed this dress for me.“Just wait till you see your wedding dress. I’m not done with that yet though,” she said with a small chuckle and walked around me slowly.I was wearing a cream colored full length gown that had a beautiful corset-like design that accentuated my bust and waist. I was smaller in the chest size but this really did well for me.I liked the long balloon sleeves and the way the skirt hugged my hips. All in all, I looked beautiful. I was right to give a Yvonne the job to make my engagement dress.Perks of having a friend that’s a designer.“W
Today was the D-day and I was not ready at all. Berlin kept calling me for the past few days but I didn’t pick his calls because I had nothing to say to him.“My dear, you look so beautiful. This dress is amazing!” My mum showered me with compliments as the makeup artist did her work on my face. If it was another time, I would have smiled.“Thank you, mum. Is Yvonne here?” I asked her.She nodded, “She’s helping the others in welcoming the guests. Have you seen Berlin? He looks so handsome “ My stomach churned when she brought him up. Did she have to?I didn’t want her to notice my change in mood, so I brought out my phone and sent a text to Yvonne, letting her know I’ll soon be out.“I’m going out now. I want to go and greet the guests. Don’t waste too much time,” mum said and patted my shoulder before walking out. She was so joyful that it made my heart hurt.“You don’t look too happy,” my makeup artist said, making me blink in surprise. How could she tell?“I’m just overwhelmed. I

“This is your fourth drink. You need to take it easy, babe,” Yvonne said, grabbing the empty shot cup from my hand. I nodded at her words and gave her a thumbs up. I wasn’t drunk yet and it was getting me annoyed.“I’m not going to do anything stupid, allow me to get drunk,” I sighed and rested my head on the counter. After I left my father’s house to return home, Yvonne offered to go to the club in the evening. Needing to get my mind off things, I agreed.Well, the situation hadn’t changed at all.
