Karly's hostility was felt and reciprocated. Her presence got under Cassie's skin, but she didn't quite get it. It was almost as if Cassie wanted Daniel for herself, even though she didn't want him that way when he wasn't touching her. She wasn't one to be territorial, yet here she was feeling like she needed to piss on a tree and mark her turf.

One thing she knew for sure: things were going to be awkward as ass if she couldn't convince Karly that her interest in Daniel was purely professional. How do you convince someone of something when you can't even convince yourself? What if Eryn was right and there was something between them? Was there?

They walked a full block before either spoke. It wasn't an uncomfortable silence, more like they were both trapped in their own heads and didn't know where to start.

"I don't think you should ever tell Karly," Cassie finally said.

"I can't keep lying to her."

"If she finds out that you saw her rape and didn't act, you'll be history. I

Cassie arrived home to an empty house. A text from Eryn stated she'd gone into the city to see Jack, and Cassie would need to feed the horses supper and breakfast. A smile curved her lips as she thought about how happy Jack made Eryn. After what Kevin Lanoway did to her, it was nice to see her being treated well. She deserved the best. Jack Brady was about as close to the best as any guy could get. Not only did he look like a Greek god, but he had a badass job as world's hottest karate instructor. Cassie started taking his classes to keep an eye on Tricia when her husband, Jason, believed her to be having an affair with Jack, who was also teaching their son, Chase. Jack almost busted Cassie and Eryn watching his house, but Eryn saved the day. It turned out that Jack was innocent, and he and Eryn hooked up because of the case, and they were now practically inseparable. "At least something good came out of that fucked up case," Cassie mumbled. She also learned to like karate.

Somewhere in the dark, she could hear her name, she could feel her body shaking. A piercing pain in her head grew with intensity, forcing her eyes open. Confused for a moment, she scanned the dimly lit room, her bedroom. One hand gripped the comforter and the other instinctively moved to the sore spot on the side of her head. She fingered the bump and winced as a painful moan escaped her lips."Jesus, woman! You scared the shit out of me!" Randy quipped, shoving her hand away and covering the protruding welt with a bag of frozen peas.Confused, she scrunched her forehead, trying to recall what happened. Her eyes bulged as the image of a hooded man flew to the forefront of her memory. "There was a man in the woods. He was coming for me, and I don't remember." Tears escaped her eyes as she tried to recall what happened. Mooch leapt onto the bed and began profusely licking her face, ecstatic that she was ok. Plopping himself down beside her, he rested his head on her stomach."I

Eryn strolled into the barn around eleven in the morning. She found Cassie chilling in the tack room, with the music turned up, a beer in one hand, and Mooch on the receiving end of an ear scratch from the other hand. Mooch ditched Cassie to race up and greet his other mommy."Everything's done," Cassie said, reaching out to turn the music down. Eryn's hair looked like it hadn't seen a comb in days, and she had dark circles under her eyes. "You look like you could use a nap." "I'm wiped, but I feel awesome. I haven't felt this refreshed in a long time. It's amazing what a night of unbelievable sex can do." Eryn plopped into a chaise lounge and stared dreamily up at the ceiling. "I'm happy things are going well with Jack.""Me too." Eryn giggled."So, I guess I'm going to be working this weekend."Eryn swung to meet Cassie's gaze. "Why? I thought you didn't have to go in until Monday.""Gotta start on a case today." "Shitty."Cassie turned to Eryn, looking sheepish.

Randy didn't know Cassie took on an undercover gig, and if he found out, he would most definitely lose his shit in a volcanic manner. It wasn't like she wouldn't tell him, she totally would, just not yet.Tricia believed her husband disappeared because of his knowledge about a potential sex slave, and now there was missing money that Jenna believed to be Ryan's doing. Cassie could easily investigate Jason's disappearance while simultaneously checking out Ryan Seida on Jenna's behalf. It's a win-win situation. She'd let Randy in on everything first thing Monday morning. This way she had a head start on the case. The Seidas were obviously into some twisted shit. How twisted was the million-dollar question? Chills rippled down Cassie's spine. She probably won't be prepared for what's discovered. Working every angle to get at the truth was the only way. She needed to get into Ryan and Kathy's home to nose around a bit. To do that, she needed to cozy up to them.Pretending to be

The Seidas lived in a recently developed area of the city. Their house, the largest on the crescent, had a massive front window that spanned two floors and half the floor span in width. The front yard, immaculately landscaped, boasted a slate walkway lined with several matching oversized planters holding an array of tropical plants that had started to wither away in the chilled autumn air. The mini-mansion clearly defined just how wealthy the Seidas were by looking every bit as obnoxious as its owners. Cassie pursed her lips, raising a questioning brow as she recalled the missing money from the Slippery Pole. Why would Ryan steal money when they could clearly afford a lavish life? Eighty-thousand-dollars would be chump change to him. But if he didn't take the money, then who did?As she approached the front door, it swung open, and Kathy stood in the frame. "Welcome, Cassie," she exclaimed a little too jubilantly. "Come in!"Once inside, a glass of red appeared before Cassie, co

Just as she reached the door to leave, voices on the stairs stopped Cassie in her tracks. Kathy and Ryan were coming towards the bedroom. Panicking, she glanced towards Heaven to ask why, but her reflection in the mirrored ceiling mocked her, pointing out that she brought this situation on herself. Zipping into the closet, she dove into the clothes behind the door, praying they didn't discover her."I'm sure she just went home," Ryan said. "She did just work an eight-hour shift.""Well, that was rude. She didn't even say goodbye," Kathy sulked. "I so wanted to get to know her better.""No worries, my darling. I'm sure you'll get another chance." Kathy sighed dramatically. "I miss my girl." Cassie smirked, knowing it was Tricia that Kathy was referring to."I know, Baby. She made her choice; we should respect that. I know you're sad, but you'll find a new toy, just like I did."He did? Ummm. Cassie leaned in to focus on their voices. Was he referring to his slave?"I

Sunlight poured into Cassie's dreams, dragging her from the subconscious world. Opening her eyes, just a slit, she squinted against the first burn of light to hit her eyes. Still wrapped in Randy's embrace, she stretched her sleepy limbs, and her ears picked up on an irritating sound. Chewing. Bolting upright in bed, she searched her surroundings for the source. Gnawing and slopping filled the air, and it came from the floor beside her bed. Randy jerked awake. "What?" he said, sounding panicked."Shhh." Cassie cocked her head and then turned to lean over the edge of the bed, where Mooch sat, happily destroying the shoes from Hell. She giggled, admiring his handy work, thankful that the shoes would never be worn again. Scolding him seemed cruel, since he basically did her a favor. "Mooch is eating my shoes."Randy groaned and dropped back down, pulling the pillow over his face.Reaching into her nightstand, she retrieved a dog biscuit and held it up, waiting. Mooch looked up, h

Cassie's phone chirped. It was a text from Jenna: Can you come by? I'm at the Pretty Kitty by your office until 5.On my way, Cassie replied,"Jenna just texted. She wants to meet up." Cassie said.Randy perked up. "Perfect! See if you can secure another shift. Maybe you can schmooze your way back in the house and replace the cam."Cassie left the guys and walked to the Pretty Kitty. It gave her a few minutes to mull over the events of the past couple of days and her complete failure as a private investigator. How could she forget to replace the batteries? It's just commonsense, which apparently, she lacked. Her incompetence couldn't be argued, but at least she was trying. Stalkers and stupidity be damned, she'd solve the case. Thoughts of Randy swirled throughout her mind. More specifically, how to keep him from going to prison. Right now, the police believed Dillon ran out on Melody, but that wasn't going to fly for long. Soon they would look at Randy because of his aff

Margot Woods whipped open the door and beamed before yanking Cassie into a mama-bear hug to beat all hugs. Cassie went limp in her arms as Randy chuckled at the exchange."My sweet girl," Margot cooed as she pulled from her embrace. "I've missed the dickens out of you.""I've missed you too, Mom." Cassie giggled, reached for Randy's hand, and followed Mom inside. They entered the living room where her father was seated, and Mom disappeared into the kitchen. Cassie scanned towards the kitchen and then the dining room, looking for Sara and Greg. She had been dreading this encounter, but Randy forced her to put on her big girl panties and face them. So here she was. Baby steps.Sara's laughter could be heard from outside. Cassie moved to the sliding doors to the backyard and stared out through the glass as Randy moved in behind and kissed the back of her head. The scene before them was like something out of a mushy Hallmark Christmas movie. A young couple laughing and throwing

Focused on work, the hours passed. Again, voices from out front caught Cassie's attention although she hadn't heard the door chime. She stepped out into the hall and almost fell over with shock. Sara stood in a small circle with Daniel and Karly. She spoke quietly while holding Karly's hand and resting another on Daniel's arm. They appeared engrossed in whatever she was saying. Nothing about the conversation seemed hostile, so Cassie quietly backed into her office while briefly catching her sister's eye. It looked as though Sara had it handled. Cassie knew it wasn't her business and hoped it would stay that way.A few minutes later, Sara knocked and then entered the office. Cassie noted a sense of peace on Sara's face that could be attributed to the 'cleaning of house'."I've put everything to right, except for Greg," she sniffed as if trying not to cry. "I've tried, but I just can't find the words. And how do I explain my gift or your gift or dad's or all of it?"Cassie shrugg

By noon, they arrived at the office, ready to roll. Feeling safe, Cassie and Randy strolled hand in hand through the front door in broad daylight. Gone was the sense of doom. Gone was the man who wanted her dead. Karly rose from her place at the front desk and greeted them with a smile. Her brown bob framed her face which held a lovely glow. "Welcome back. You must be relieved that Bolton's under house arrest," she said, her eyes conveying concern for Cassie. Karly didn't know that Bolton took his life the night before, and neither did Daniel, unless his precognition revealed the truth. They had no way of telling Karly without giving up Randy's initial intent or Daniel and Cassie's abilities, so Randy and Cassie agreed to just let it all play out.Cassie grinned with relief. "It's definitely good to know he'll have a difficult time taking another shot at us."Daniel appeared next, moving down the hall towards them. He smiled and nodded a hello as if all was well in the world. He

Cassie rose early and with Mooch in tow, headed straight to the barn. Overnight a blanket of fresh fluffy snow covered the slush by at least two feet, but the still air defied the evidence of last night's blizzard. The silence was amazing. She paused, closed her eyes, and inhaled a long slow calming breath. The cool morning air flushed her cheeks, but she welcomed the feeling, she welcomed the prairie chill that ripped through the fabric of her jacket. She was alive. Bolton was gone and she could really live again. As she continued towards the barn, she noticed a spring in her step, and her body didn't feel rigid with worry. She fed the horses and then took Mooch for a walk around the property. She imagined a check list of things to deal with and crossed off Bolton's name. Immediately below his was Melody. Crazy, bonkers, completely unbalanced, Melody. The only person left wandering around that hated Cassie with a passion fueled by serious imbalance. What would Bolton's de

Cassie took Mooch to bed. They snuggled in and she took comfort stroking his ears. He was asleep in seconds, but she lay awake wondering.Sleep was a touchy subject for her, but tonight she intended to utilize her abilities, to gain some insight into Bolton's death. She needed to know if he did indeed kill himself, and if so, why? It just didn't make any sense. She could see it, if he had finally exacted his revenge and killed her, as a way of escaping prison, but before he got to do the deed? No. She just couldn't accept it.Closing her eyes, she focused, relaxed, drifted: Mist surrounded her, the blinding kind, so she knew she was close. Within seconds it began to clear, and she could take in her surroundings. Bolton entered his home through the front door and walked straight passed her as she stood in his living room unnoticed. He dropped a backpack on the dining table, left the room for a minute and returned with a pen and paper in one hand and a handgun in the other. Focused o

Eryn fired up the truck, laid her foot on the gas, and they sped from the yard. "You're up," she said. "Where to? I'm not sure if I want to know but what did you see?""It was Randy, he's going to shoot Bolton and kill him." The words tore from her mouth like a dagger to the heart. "I can't believe he'd do this.""Jesus," Eryn hissed. "Do you know when? Where?""I saw this while awake and the last time that happened it was an immediate thing. We need to go to the city, to Bolton's house, to try to stop it, but I think it's too late." "Why would he do that?" Eryn said. "I mean, Bolton was busted lighting fire to his house and yours, he was going to jail." Cassie remained silent, but she could feel Eryn's suspicions grow in the awkward air that surrounded them. "Spill, lady."Sighing, Cassie shook her head. She literally couldn't keep anything from Eryn, so she said, "I had a dream that Bolton planned on shooting me, and Daniel confirmed, saying he had the same dream.""Oh,

Twenty-four hours of cyber stalking, mini-naps, and watching the tag on Bolton's car go to his place of work, Thomas Tire and Auto, and then home, felt like a lifetime. With an ankle monitor on, Bolton lead a boring existence, but so far, he'd adhered to the court mandated restrictions. They caught a break in surveillance thanks to a buddy of Randy's at the station who provided them with Bolton's work schedule that he submitted for monitoring. Randy thought he'd have the poison figured out by tomorrow and would plant it while Bolton was at work. The plan was falling into place. It was a shaky plan that Cassie wasn't comfortable with and poison seemed ridiculous and obvious. A gun to the head, that made sense, but Randy though it was too loud, messy, and hard to wash their hands from it. Like a caged animal, Cassie was sure as she paced the floor of their room that if she didn't get out of the hotel soon, she'd lose what was left of her mind."So," Cassie drawled. "We gotta kick

Cassie drifted back in the sofa and dropped against the cushions, tipping her head back to stare at the ceiling. Stunned wasn't enough of a word to describe watching your sister make a man forget he impregnated her. It was beyond bonkers. But it happened. It was epic, and as far as Cassie was concerned, terrifying. The implications of Sara's new gift were off the charts."We need to undo what she just did," Cassie blurted out."What's that now?" Daniel asked, clearly confused by her statement. She swung her head on the cushion to address him. "Seriously? You don't remember? It's the reason you're even here." Cassie eyed him as if he might say otherwise, but everyone in the room except Daniel knew the truth.Daniel laughed and then gaped at Cassie as if she were insane. "What are you on about, Cassie?" Daniel's genuine look of confusion was all they needed to know. With very little effort, Sara had wiped him clean. The sinking feeling in Cassie's chest returned, and she fough

The door to the room opened and everyone filed in. Dad rushed to greet Cassie with a hug, and Cassie looked towards her sister who stood off to the side, arms crossed, eyebrow arched, looking as if she anticipated an apology.Randy offered Sara a chair and she took it, looking uneasy. Cassie eyed her perfect bombshell sister. Sara looked amazing, rocking her almost pregnancy figure with a cute grey maternity sweater and jeans. She glowed, radiantly, and Cassie was sure she had never seen her sister look so beautiful. "So, what's so important that you just had to see us?" Sara asked not even trying to disguise the fact that she felt put out.Dad pulled away, noting Cassie's worn appearance, and turned to address Sara. "There is much to discuss, Sara. I need you to promise to listen carefully to all that is said. Do you trust me?""I mean, you've only been my dad for like five minutes." she said, eyeing Cassie for confirmation so Cassie nodded. "I guess," Sara said. The fact
