An invisible force, beyond her control, steered her through the dark, second floor hallway towards their bedroom door. Apprehension mingled sadistically with a hint of terror, and it lingered in the air like a sick stagnant fog. Desperate to catch her breath in protest of the ominous air, she paused outside the sealed door.

Her legs quaked, sending tremors to every point in her body. If she didn't get a grip, she'd be taking a knee or worse. Staring at the door, she sucked in one sharp composing breath before delving deep to muster the courage to open it.

Intense trepidation had a grip on her mind, making it impossible to be rational. The other side of the door held the reason for her unease, and the impending doom taunted her without mercy. Something horrific waited for her - something that made her stomach clench and her heart ache.

Attempting to shake off the uneasy feeling, she rolled her shoulders and stepped forward. Her hand trembled uncontrollably as it reached out but calmed when her fingers curled around the smooth, brushed brass handle.

Answers were now within her reach - with the simple twist of her wrist.

But it didn't feel simple. Instincts voiced their silent concern by shrieking in her ears, urging her to turn and flee, but idiotic curiosity compelled her to move forward, so she turned the handle and eased the door open.

The master bedroom that she and her husband Greg shared was empty. Greg's bedside lamp provided the only illumination in the room, but it was enough to clearly define the liquid that dripped down the wall at the head of their unmade bed. She stepped closer to investigate but stopped dead in her tracks, gaping at the thick, crimson liquid that trailed down the wall and gathered in a pool on Greg's pillow. She recognized the strange substance as the same lifeforce pulsing through her veins with incredible ferocity.

Her mouth opened, prepared to release a scream, but icy terror paralyzed her vocal cords, so she turned and ran from the room. If she knew anything, it was that she needed to escape and with her husband unaccounted for, she had to save herself.

Tearing through the house, she made her escape through the patio doors and raced down the shadowy street, convinced a malevolent being was in pursuit. She glanced back several times, expecting to discover the culprit, but the only thing hot on her trail was senseless fear. Desperate to outrun it, she propelled her legs to the brink of agony, pushing through the pain until the world spun out of control. Her thoughts, a dizzying mass of confusion, forced her legs to stop. Her eyes searched the dark as she tried to steady herself and formulate a plan, but her swirling mind made it impossible. She lost her balance, collapsing into nothingness.

As if she had really fallen, a full-body convulsion rocked Cassie Woods from her dream. Gasping for air, she clutched her chest while trying to gain control of reality.

It was just a dream, she thought, swallowing hard while praying that it was just a dream.

Somewhere in the dark, the faint sound of snoring caught her attention. Her head swiveled, and she focused on her husband Greg's sleeping form. As her eyes adjusted to the darkness, she could see he slept soundly, oblivious to her current state. He seemed fine, but - trembling with fright, her gaze shifted to the wall above Greg's head.

"No blood. Oh, thank God!" Cassie whispered, releasing the breath she had been holding.

Totally shaken, she sat for several minutes, waiting for her heart rate to normalize, and the tremors to wane. The terror she felt in the dream seemed so real, so raw. She rarely had nightmares, but that dream was awful. Something happened to Greg in it, and judging by the blood on the wall, it wasn't good.

Shaking her head at the ridiculousness, Cassie admired her sleeping husband while reasoning with herself. Greg's fine. But commonsense couldn't erase the unease that had control of her body, and the thought of being sucked back into the same nightmare made it impossible for her to return to sleep. Leaning over, she smoothed a wisp of Greg's brown hair away from his eye and kissed his cheek. Rather than waste time stressing over a nasty dream, she could make use of the quiet and go for a jog to clear her head.

Dressed in a grey track suit, Cassie gathered her thick, straight, slightly-longer-than-shoulder-length, tawny hair into a ponytail and stepped outside. Her feet pounding against the pavement echoed throughout the sleepy predawn neighborhood that glowed beneath the shimmer of streetlights.

Her warm breath mingled with the dank mid-September air, cooling her body as it passed through her lungs. It was the ideal temperature for a jog, and normally it would feel amazing, but her mind was preoccupied with images from the nightmare. She shuddered, recalling the blood on the wall. What would have happened to Greg in her dream if she had slept long enough to find out? Probably, she didn't want to know.

Unable to shake the uneasy feeling, she ran until the high freed her mind from the negative effects of the dream. Forcing a change in mindset, she thought about Greg, and she suddenly couldn't wait to be wrapped in his arms. Pushing past the pain in her legs, she raced back to the house.

Sharing a delicious post-shag breakfast with her husband was just what the doctor ordered. With last night's nightmare floating somewhere in the back of Cassie's mind, she was free to enjoy time with Greg. They chatted casually during breakfast until the chirp of her incoming text alert interrupted them. She reached for the phone, read the message, and squealed with delight.

Startled, Greg looked up, eyeing her with question. "What's up?"

"Randy just assigned me my first case! I'm so excited! It's going to be my first solo surveillance job. I mean, I've been casually watching the target for a couple of weeks, but now the client wants to step up surveillance."

"Good for you!" Greg said, seemingly pleased with her news.

"This is going to be awesome! I can't wait to get started."

Greg's smile faded, and his head tilted slightly as though something crossed his mind. "Does this mean you're working tonight?"

Crap! she thought, recalling the plans they made for his time off. She bit her bottom lip, feeling bad. "Yes. I'm sorry. Do you mind? I feel like a jerk since we just made plans a few minutes ago. I know you have the night off, and I'd be ditching you, but we could spend the night together once I finish. It doesn't usually take that long to catch a cheater. I'll probably be working the whole weekend, which sucks, but if I get moving, maybe I'll get lucky."

"No worries. I could use the time to chill." He didn't sound angry.

"You're the best." The smile she sent him highlighted just how much she appreciated his support.

"Will you be doing night surveillance alone?" He shifted casually in his chair but averted his eyes.

She caught on to his concern because it was one that he had voiced many times before. "Yes. Do you want to come along? I know it's not what you had in mind, but we could drink coffee and chat."

"Ummm. No," he replied, clearly uninterested in the invitation. "I've had a long week, and I really just want to relax at home. Maybe you could take Eryn?"

"That's a great idea!" Cassie giggled. "Oh, she's going to hate it, but we could make it a ladies' night. I promised that I'd help with the yearlings this weekend, too. Do you mind if I spend the night at her place and check in with you tomorrow before I'm back on the job?"

"Sure," he said, shrugging indifferently.

"Are you upset with me?" she asked, sensing a shift in his mood.

"No." Shaking his head, Greg assured her with a sexy lopsided grin that he wasn't angry. "How could I be when you're ecstatic? This is good for your career. We'll have our night together soon?"

"It's a date!" Cassie stood and leaned in for a kiss. When their lips met, a nasty chill rushed up her arms to the base of her neck, and the same feeling of dread she experienced in the nightmare washed over her. As swiftly as the feeling arrived, she brushed it off, pulled herself together, and smiled against his lips before pulling away. He didn't need to be burdened with her silly dreams.

"I love you," Greg said, his brown eyes gazing deep into hers.

She melted a little and planted another kiss on his lips before turning to leave. "I love you, too. See you tomorrow." Eager to get to work, she grabbed her purse and dashed out the door.

As a rookie P.I. at Tyler Investigations, Cassie was still in the learning stages but determined to advance in her career. A couple of weeks ago, the client, Jason Schmidt, hired them to keep an eye on his wife, Tricia. Jason believed Tricia was having an affair because he discovered sexy dresses and lingerie that she apparently never wore for him. He believed Tricia's alleged lover was Jack Brady, the karate instructor who taught their son, Chase. For the past two weeks, Cassie had been attending the same karate classes as Chase but nothing unusual was happening there. Tricia was at every class, but there were no questionable interactions between her and Jack. Of course, Jason's suspicions were understandable where Jack Brady was concerned; Jack was exceptionally hot, but his hotness went unnoticed by Tricia. Cassie hadn't seen anything between the two that supported Jason's theory of an affair, but as far as Jason was concerned, Jack was the only possible candidate.Tricia's rec

The white bungalow, across the street, stood oddly out of place in the neighborhood. New windows, shingles, and siding, meshed perfectly with its immaculate yard that was minimally landscaped with rock, grass, and shrubs. An ancient elm tree in the front yard stood half bare as the leaves had begun to fall, but there wasn't a single dead fallen leaf on the ground. There were no flowers or weeds, and the thriving lawn clearly defied the forthcoming winter. The owner obviously took pride in his well-maintained property, or he had OCD. Cassie admired the brick work that cradled juvenile evergreen shrubs in front of a bay window. She scanned to the houses on either side of the white bungalow and shook her head. The rundown shacks with weedy, garbage strewn yards, brought down the white bungalow's property value, and it was a tossup as to whether or not they should be condemned. How anyone could possibly live in them was a mystery. It was as if the rundown houses existed in a separa

Jack tapped on the window, again. "Fuck," Eryn said, nudging Cassie. "You owe me. Stay down." Inhaling nervously, she ruffled her hands through her hair and then flung the passenger door to the van open. She stepped on the frame while leaning on the door and looking over the van at the street. Eryn's momentary silence could only mean that she was assessing Jack. A knowing smile curled Cassie's lips as she stifled a giggle. Glancing to Eryn, she could only assume that Eryn was as affected by Jack as most women. Curious and wanting to watch the scene play out, Cassie lifted her head to peek through the windshield. Her eyes travelled back to Jack, who stood before them looking every bit as beautiful as usual. But tonight, he looked like a god, standing aglow beneath the streetlight that illuminated his magnificently flawless body against the midnight sky. Clearly annoyed, Jack glared expectantly at Eryn with his hands casually stuffed into his jean pockets. His tight, black, Guns

Even though Eryn was unimpressed with the events of the evening, Cassie knew her bestie would be over it by morning. Eryn Miller's greatest fear was losing another loved one, so Cassie accepted and understood her protective ways. It seemed like only yesterday, but it was more like ten years ago, when Eryn's parents were killed in a car accident. Eryn was in her second year of university at the time, but she dropped out to devote herself to the Standardbred farm that she and her older brother Ben inherited. A half-hour away from the city, the massive farm, which was more like a small country, provided Eryn and Ben with a comfortable income. The Standardbred horses used for racing were in Alberta during racing season, and the breeders and babies enjoyed life on the farm. Like Eryn, Ben was a racehorse trainer, but he spent most of his time with their horses, travelling the racing circuit through Alberta. Eryn gave Cassie a decent amount of shit for becoming a private investigato

Cassie pulled onto her street and noticed the bedroom lights were on upstairs at their house. Even though it was late, she was wide awake, giddy with anticipation, and oh so happy that Greg wasn't asleep. As she approached their house, a familiar car parked in the driveway caught her eye. She slowed down to check it out. The giddiness faded."What the hell? Why would she be here this late?" Cassie questioned aloud. A suspicious knot formed in her stomach, and her instincts shot to high alert. She circled the block and then parked on the opposite side of the street, a couple of houses away. Staring at her home with sick apprehension, she tried to sort through the many questions swirling through her mind, but the questions pointed to one disgustingly obvious truth, a truth she couldn't and absolutely didn't want to comprehend. It couldn't be, could it? Reluctantly, she stepped out of the van, sped across the street, and crept along the side of the house to the back door off

Cassie woke to the familiar comfort of her room at Eryn's house, but how she got there was a mystery. Groggy and confused, it took mere seconds for the events of the previous evening to invade her mind and crush her soul."It wasn't a nightmare." Cassie choked, submitting to the emotional breakdown that had been waiting to take her. The unbearable misery weighed heavily on her chest as she bawled uncontrollably. Eryn, who had fallen asleep next to her, woke with a start and instantly embraced her friend."Shhh, Sweetie, let it out," Eryn whispered. "Don't you worry about a thing, I'm gonna take care of you." Heartbroken for her friend, Eryn couldn't contain her own tears, so they cried together, and at some point, they dosed. When Cassie woke again, the tears were gone. Immediate fury, the most potent she had ever experienced, crushed her beneath its weight. She noticed Eryn was already out of bed and off somewhere, probably feeding the horses. Cassie opened her eyes to darkness and glorious silence. It didn't last. The disaster that had become her new normal shattered her cocoon with an invasion of perverse images that couldn't be unseen. The unlikelihood that she would fall back asleep forced her to accept the inevitable. She had to get out of bed and face the world. Grudgingly, she turned her head to glance at the clock by the bed. "12:15a.m. Great," she whispered, "I've slept an entire day away." Driven by insatiable hunger, Cassie forced herself out of bed and into her clothes. She trudged down the hall to the already lit kitchen, expecting to find Eryn still awake, but when she entered the kitchen, she came face-to-face with Ben. He stood, leaning against the sink, eating a sandwich, but stopped chewing and shifted awkwardly when their eyes met. She panicked, realizing that she looked like complete shit with the worst kind of bedhead. Ben's expression changed from surprise to one of pity with a forced smile as

Margot Woods whipped open the door and beamed before yanking Cassie into a mama-bear hug to beat all hugs. Cassie went limp in her arms as Randy chuckled at the exchange."My sweet girl," Margot cooed as she pulled from her embrace. "I've missed the dickens out of you.""I've missed you too, Mom." Cassie giggled, reached for Randy's hand, and followed Mom inside. They entered the living room where her father was seated, and Mom disappeared into the kitchen. Cassie scanned towards the kitchen and then the dining room, looking for Sara and Greg. She had been dreading this encounter, but Randy forced her to put on her big girl panties and face them. So here she was. Baby steps.Sara's laughter could be heard from outside. Cassie moved to the sliding doors to the backyard and stared out through the glass as Randy moved in behind and kissed the back of her head. Focused on work, the hours passed. Again, voices from out front caught Cassie's attention although she hadn't heard the door chime. She stepped out into the hall and almost fell over with shock. Sara stood in a small circle with Daniel and Karly. She spoke quietly while holding Karly's hand and resting another on Daniel's arm. They appeared engrossed in whatever she was saying. Nothing about the conversation seemed hostile, so Cassie quietly backed into her office while briefly catching her sister's eye. It looked as though Sara had it handled. Cassie knew it wasn't her business and hoped it would stay that way.A few minutes later, Sara knocked and then entered the office. Cassie noted a sense of peace on Sara's face that could be attributed to the 'cleaning of house'."I've put everything to right, except for Greg," she sniffed as if trying not to cry. "I've tried, but I just can't find the words. And how do I explain my gift or your gift or dad's or all of it?"Cassie shrugg

By noon, they arrived at the office, ready to roll. Feeling safe, Cassie and Randy strolled hand in hand through the front door in broad daylight. Gone was the sense of doom. Gone was the man who wanted her dead. Karly rose from her place at the front desk and greeted them with a smile. Her brown bob framed her face which held a lovely glow. "Welcome back. You must be relieved that Bolton's under house arrest," she said, her eyes conveying concern for Cassie. Karly didn't know that Bolton took his life the night before, and neither did Daniel, unless his precognition revealed the truth. They had no way of telling Karly without giving up Randy's initial intent or Daniel and Cassie's abilities, so Randy and Cassie agreed to just let it all play out.Cassie grinned with relief. "It's definitely good to know he'll have a difficult time taking another shot at us."Daniel appeared next, moving down the hall towards them. He smiled and nodded a hello as if all was well in the world. He

Cassie rose early and with Mooch in tow, headed straight to the barn. Overnight a blanket of fresh fluffy snow covered the slush by at least two feet, but the still air defied the evidence of last night's blizzard. The silence was amazing. She paused, closed her eyes, and inhaled a long slow calming breath. The cool morning air flushed her cheeks, but she welcomed the feeling, she welcomed the prairie chill that ripped through the fabric of her jacket. She was alive. Bolton was gone and she could really live again. As she continued towards the barn, she noticed a spring in her step, and her body didn't feel rigid with worry. She fed the horses and then took Mooch for a walk around the property. She imagined a check list of things to deal with and crossed off Bolton's name. Immediately below his was Melody. She needed to know if he did indeed kill himself, and if so, why? It just didn't make any sense. She could see it, if he had finally exacted his revenge and killed her, as a way of escaping prison, but before he got to do the deed? No. She just couldn't accept it.Closing her eyes, she focused, relaxed, drifted: Mist surrounded her, the blinding kind, so she knew she was close. "I can't believe he'd do this.""Jesus," Eryn hissed. "Do you know when? Where?""I saw this while awake and the last time that happened it was an immediate thing. We need to go to the city, to Bolton's house, to try to stop it, but I think it's too late." "Why would he do that?" Eryn said. "I mean, Bolton was busted lighting fire to his house and yours, he was going to jail." Cassie remained silent, but she could feel Eryn's suspicions grow in the awkward air that surrounded them. Twenty-four hours of cyber stalking, mini-naps, and watching the tag on Bolton's car go to his place of work, Thomas Tire and Auto, and then home, felt like a lifetime. With an ankle monitor on, Bolton lead a boring existence, but so far, he'd adhered to the court mandated restrictions. Randy thought he'd have the poison figured out by tomorrow and would plant it while Bolton was at work. The plan was falling into place. It was a shaky plan that Cassie wasn't comfortable with and poison seemed ridiculous and obvious. A gun to the head, that made sense, but Randy though it was too loud, messy, and hard to wash their hands from it.
