“Wow,” James said with a mocked dazed tone as he looked at the woman talking with the alpha.

“Damn werewolves,” he heard Lily swear with an irritated tone and tried his best not to smile as he was sure his attempt to make her feel possessive if not a little jealous appeared to work. The woman was attractive, to say the least, but that she looked like she could kill him three times in ten seconds was a major drawback. Besides, whether Lily liked it or not, his attention belonged to her and her alone.

By the look on the alpha’s face, Nick didn’t seem to mind that the woman next to him was potentially lethal. He looked ready to lay his life down. James watched as she and the nymph walk over to the woman and the alpha and he allowed himself a victory smile. He watched them talk and noticed there was something different about Lily since her visit with the Aequivalere, and he was sure it was more than her newly acquired arsenal, but he wasn’t sure exactly what it was.

Once they reached the silver electrified fence, a forest nymph commanded the trees to uproot themselves and literally tear down the fence. Now they stood on the edges of the woods at the brick wall. They awaited confirmation that all the teams were in place. The beast was raging to be let out, but James kept him under control, preferring to wait until he let the beast free. Lily opened and closed her fists with clear nervousness as she kept her eyes on the building before him and James would have given all he had to know what was going on in that head of hers. The crackle of the sheriff’s two-way radio came to life with the announcement that the last team was in place. He looked over to Lily, who nodded then to James. James gave a similar nod and Nick order for everyone to start the attack. Lily and a few of the others charged the large black metal gate while the alpha and two other werewolves shot at the guards. Once they passed the gate, James would allow the beast to take over. He

The beast took another step towards the alpha, extending his clawed fingers menacingly, not taking his golden eyes off of the werewolf before him. The alpha returned his powerful gaze with no apparent sign of fear. “I’m the alpha beast,” Nick started saying the words slowly and clearly, each word filled with authority. “You will do as I say and I say you back down now,” he ordered. The beast stood before him snarling, examining the alpha, looking for any hint of fear or uncertainty. The Alpha returned his growl, and the beast saw nothing but powerful authority coming from him, so he did as the werewolf told him and he backed off. “Good, now take these,” he said, tossing a small cloth bag at him. “Go around the corner and shift back to James. Your help is no longer needed, Beast,” he demanded. The beast growled at him again, not wanting to leave. He wanted to kill more people, but the alpha threw his influence over him, and the beast begrudgingly did as he was told.James breathed a si

Lily tensed as they came to a long corridor that ended with a large metal door with some kind of number pad to the right of it. Xavier’s arrogant expression told Lily he knew exactly what was going on in her head. What the hell am I doing? She scolded herself. “Screw yourself, Xavier, I will never help you. Not even with the bribe of getting rid of James,” she snapped at him.His face twisted into a furious rage. “Foolish woman, I don’t need to get your blood from you alive,” Xavier screamed at her, and one of the black metal doors opened. An enormous creature slowly entered the room; to say it was hideous was an understatement. It looked similar to James’ beast, but there were bald spots on him everywhere. Fur covered one arm and clawed while the other was smooth and more humanlike.“This is one of my many attempts to recreate what you are. As you can see, he is a clear failure, but he does serve for other purposes. He has proven to be qu

“No,” Lily told Xavier, and he looked surprised and insisted that he would be good at his word. “I said no Xavier, tonight you die. You see, I’ve got silver bullets loaded in this gun. I am going to fill you with so much silver they will make silverware out of your ass when I am done. Now you can be a good guy. Let the girl go so I don’t have to take her down with you because quite honestly I am not a very good shot,” Lily explained, in turn ignoring the girl’s anguished sob.“Nice try Lily, but you’d never hurt her,” he replied with smug arrogance.“Yeah, normally you’d be right, but not this time. I have to take you down here and now. I would hurt one girl to keep you from hurting hundreds, thousands, and maybe even millions of people,” she replied in turn with cold seriousness in h

Lily turned away from her, taking deep breaths. Neither the beast nor the vampire wanted to go back. They like being this in control and fighting against her. She growled as she attempted to dig deep inside herself to find her humanity and herself forcing the others back down into their cages within her. Little by little she grew stronger than them. With a sigh of relief and exhaustion, Lily felt herself return to normal as her body gave out from the exertion. The teen grabbed her around her waist. “Are you alright?” she asked, worried, and Lily nodded without looking at her. “What are you?” Wendy asked again, sounding curious. Lily couldn’t help but laugh as she leaned against the wall.“That is a good question. I don’t think they have a name for me since I am not really a hybrid,” she replied. “I sort of h

James watched Lily walk past him with the alpha’s daughter clinging to her waist. As much as he was glad to see she was okay, he was furious she had done something so stupid as to go off on her own. If that wasn’t bad enough, she didn’t even have the tiniest amount of courtesy to at least apologize for worrying him, no she had thrown it in his face how little she cared for him and his concern for her safety.Once they arrived back at the hotel, all the vampires practically ran to their homes, except for Bianca and Dorin. “So what happened Lily?” Nick demanded.“Xavier is dead. I killed him myself. Can the rest wait until I can recover some?” Lily replied, and James noticed her typical sardonic tone was gone.“No, no, it can’t!” Nick barked right back at her

At the alpha's office in the police station, Wendy explained how Xavier tricked her into coming with him and her time with the doctor. He would make her listen to hours-long speeches about the new world order he intended to create and make her a part of, watch as he experimented on rogue wolves and vampires, threatening to let them rip her apart if she ever left her room. “Then today he came and got me out of my room looking panicked,” she explained, getting to the part James wanted to hear most.“He pulled me into one of the rooms he used to test on people and held a needle to my neck when Lily came into the room, though she was different from she was now,” Wendy went on.“What do you mean?” Nick asked with curiosity.“She was... different. “It was me or him,” Lily said, glancing at A.J. and James looked confused. “A.J. has one…issue,” she started, and he looked at his son with slight concern on his face. “A.J. is a biter, and he does it well. When he gets angry, or doesn’t like someone A.J. will bite them…he nearly took off a person’s finger once. I’ve learned to recognize the signs of when he’s getting pissed,” Lily explained.“Still don’t get why you acted that way towards Ginger,” James stated, sounding more confused than disapproving now.Lily leaned forward and in a whisper told him. “Look around James; you notice how these people look at me? None of them are happy that I’m here. I don’t care what they think, but it not only affects me. A.J. is marked because of me and if he bit into

Lily followed James into the small diner. She had been in there a few times, but not too many, since a lot of werewolves hung out there. As a human, she avoided all werewolves that weren’t her adopted family, and now it was just an old habit hard to break. Plus, she knew none of them enjoyed having her around, either.“Hey James,” an older waitress called out with a warm smile.“Hey Cat, how’s the day going for you?” James replied.“You know how it is,” the waitress replied with a chuckle.“That bad huh,” he joked, and she waved him off with another chuckle. Lily was a little surprised by the exchange. These people had feared and hated him at one time. Lily shook her head as they sat down in a booth. “What?” James asked with a curious expression.“You’re just one more of the pack now, huh?” Lily asked back with an amused but also a little irritated. She didn’t miss how they looked at her as they went to their booth. They must have put her in James’s old place as the dangerous element

“Sort of. Maybe in time we’ll manage friends,” James replied and noticed a brief look of disappointment on the ex-alpha’s face.“Well, that’s good. Spending time with her and A.J. seems like a good start to get the ball rolling,” Andrew told him and James nodded in agreement. Lily came down with A.J. soon after, both ready to go.“We can take my car,” Lily told him as they walked out of the house. He recognized that rusted death trap as the one Chris had driven to talk to him.“I’d rather not. That car looks about a hundred years old. I drove my truck. There will be enough room for all three of us,” James replied, and Lily looked like she was about to argue when she shrugged.&ldquo

James stood outside for a moment; he still couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to the way they were acting than the fact that Chris had a new mate. When he arrived at his apartment that night, he tossed his keys on the coffee table and walked into his bedroom, wondering about the events of the day. Were Lily and Chris hiding something else? If so, what? He thought about A.J. and for the first time since he started working for Freddie; he wished he didn’t have to go to work tomorrow so he could spend the whole day with him, but he couldn’t leave Freddie hanging like that. Friday was usually their busiest day besides Monday. They were slammed with work all day; James hardly had time to think as they rushed from one house to the next. So by the time he finished for the day, the only thing he wanted to do was crawl into bed despite his original idea of going over to see A.J. It didn’t help that since Lily came back he hadn’t been sleeping too well either. He kept thinking about

“So,” she said slowly, and he was sure she felt as awkward as he did right now. “What brings you over here today?”“Besides the fact I want to spend some time with my son?” James asked, a little bitterly, and he saw her wince even though she tried to hide it. He knew it was wrong, but it made him feel a slight feeling of satisfaction. “I came here to let you know I want to spend Saturday with him.”Lily seemed to think about something, then nodded. “That sounds good. I heard the weather is going to be nice then, and I saw a cool park on main street,” she said and James was again a little surprised that not only did she have any problems with it but thought it was a good idea.“Good, so I’ll be here around ten?” James asked, and she nodded.“I’ll have him ready by then,” she offered. He returned her nod and stood up, about to leave, but Sandy insisted James stay for dinner, not that he put up a fight to leave. Her cooking was the best he had ever eaten, pl

James put his tools in the back of Freddie’s truck, feeling famished and ready to eat. “Hey James,” he heard someone called after him. Damn it, he swore silently. Why did everyone bother him when he was about to eat? He turned to see Chris walking up to him. What was he doing there? How’d he even know where to find him?“Hey Chris, what’s up?” He asked as he grabbed his food and took out the large sandwich he made that morning.“Well, I was wondering if I could talk to you about Lily,” Chris offered, and James sighed with a shake of his head.“What about her?” He said with an edge to his voice, but honestly, he didn’t care. What more was there to talk about that woman?“I know things are a bit messed up and you’re mad, but I wanted to ask if you would go easy on her,” Chris said and James scoffed as he took a bite of his sandwich. “Look James, she’s been through a lot during the time she’s been gone,” he added, with a hint of anger in his voice. James was getting angry.“Yeah, yeah, y

“So what are we really doing?” Chris asked once they were outside.“Well, first I'm really going to check out the town so I can be seen. Remember, I got to make sure it’s well known that I’m back in town,” Lily told them as they walked to her old car inside the garage. She really hoped it would start considering the layer of dust covering it. “I also thought about visiting Lacey,” she said quietly as they got into the car. Chris shot a pained look in her direction.“That one you’ll have to do without me,” he told her with a frown and she returned his frown.“I think you should go with me, Chris,” she replied as she attempted to start the car.“No, Lily. I’m not going,” he said firmly. She sighed, knowing he wouldn’t change his mind and continued to coax her car into starting. Finally, it started and purred to life and Lily smiled. I knew I could count on you, baby, she cooed silently.“Alright Chris, I won’t ask you again,” Lily told him as she backed out of the garage and down the dr

“But you hate me,” James said, sitting up when she admitted to wanting to be friends. His look grew more intense, and her nervousness spiked. She almost demanded that he quit looking at her like that, but she knew the situation was already on thin ice and that would make it worse.“I don’t hate you, James, and I didn’t hate you…not really. You were just a convenient target for my anger,” she told him, repeating Charlie’s words almost word for word. For a moment he kept giving her that look, making her squirm in her own skin.“So you don’t hate me and you want to try to be friends,” he repeated as if he wasn’t sure what he was hearing was correct and she stated once more that was what she wanted. “Alright, we’ll let the past stay in the past and start new. Deal,” he said.“Deal,” she replied, not feeling as happy as she’d thought she would. James agreed to start fresh, try to be friends, and he hadn’t mentioned mates at all. He got up from the bed and started towards the door.“James,”

Lily walked over to the rickety old desk and opened a drawer. Digging through old papers and reaching way in the back, she found what she was looking for. Lily sat on the bed and looked at the framed picture. She brushed the dust away with a sigh as she examined the three smiling faces. The man was tall and strong, with long dark raven hair and a bronzed complexion. His hand was on the little girl’s shoulder. She had the same dark hair and complexion. He always seemed so strong, Lily thought with a small smile. She turned her attention to the woman. Her brunette hair was cut in a type of pixie style; she was wearing a black tank top with cut-off shorts. She loved to wear them when the summer heat came. This was the only picture she had that her mother wasn’t high, drunk, or looked like she’d rather be anywhere else but there. Maybe that was my fault too, Lily thought as she remembered one
