Reading the book is slow work considering my inability to read books in recent years. Luckily, the trials in this fantasy world manage to suck me right in. Reading about a world so far different than mine seems like such an easy way to live. Of course, it most likely isn't.
After reading about a quarter of the book, I decide to go talk to Dante about it. I am thrilled to have something to talk to him about that does not make me sound like an innocent child. I might have only met him a day ago but I feel as if every interaction with him has been lacking on my end. Finally, I might be able to converse semi intelligently with him.
Walking down the hallway I find his office door and go to knock when I hear angry voices. It might be best not to bother him while he is angry, so I go to turn and leave when I hear the words Midnight Coven. The name seems vaguely familiar although I cannot imagine where I have heard it before. It would have had to have been as a child but that was so long ago I cannot place the name.
"I do not care who they think they are, or who they are looking for." Dante practically shouts. "Yes, I understand that they are looking for somebody they consider dangerous. No, I do not have any rogues here. Do you really think I would let a wolf in that might be dangerous to my pack! You do that. I will keep an eye out but if I do not deem someone dangerous, I am not reporting anything. I do not work with witches, I have seen firsthand what they can do when someone crosses them." He slams the phone down with a huff.
In a much more level voice he calls, " Laina you can come in here. Do not be worried about the call, it is nothing I can't handle."
Hesitantly, I walk in to see him visibly relaxing and smiling to me from behind a mahogany desk. Noticing the book clutched in my hand he nods to it and asks, "How are you liking it so far? It happens to be one of my favorites, although I have not read it in quite some time."
Instead of beginning discussing the book like I had originally planned, I ask, "Who are the Midnight Coven witches?"
"It is nothing you need to worry about. Just some witches stirring up trouble but there is nothing they can do hear." He replies. "Now, why don't we discuss that book since that is what you originally came for?"
"Ok. Any possibility we can eat too? I have not eaten yet today." I ask.
"Sure, would you like some pizza?" He asked and at my enthusiastic nod he calls to order a pizza. After he orders the pizza we head out into the rec room to chat about the book until the pizza gets here.
By the time the pizza arrives we have pretty much exhausted the topic of the book and I am feeling much more relaxed around him. "So what is your favorite part of being a wolf?" I ask him.
"Hmm.... that is a tough one. I like a lot of it but I guess it is the fact that as a wolf I am so much stronger. Maybe not in muscle strength but definitely in character. I am not sure if that makes sense but I have always felt blessed to have the wolf side of me." He says.
I can relate deeply having practically lived solely as a wolf in my recent past. "I understand that. If I hadn't been a wolf I would have never survived the past few years. There is no way I would have survived the cold or gotten food when I needed. My instincts as a wolf definitely made a huge difference to how my life might have been otherwise." I relate.
"I am sure that being able to turn into a cardinal has helped you greatly as well. You never told me how you can do that by the way. I have never seen any other wolf be able to accomplish such a feat." He queries.
Great, now I am not only a freak that has lived in the woods for years but I am also the freak that can turn into a bird. "Um. I am not exactly sure. I do not even know how long I have been doing it for but when I found it necessary to hide it just kind of happened. I know it might seem like I am a freak and all but it just came natural to me when I needed it to." I tried to explain.
"You do not seem like a freak to me. In fact, your ability to survive on your own is nothing short of astounding to me. Yes, most wolves can survive in the woods for years but not alone or at such a young age. If you do not mind me asking, why have you been alone?" He asks.
With my mother's words echoing in my ears I reply, "I am sorry. I can't. I promised that I would not tell anyone but my mate."
"Well then, let us hope that your birthday will bring the relief that we both need and that you will remain safe from now on." He said with a knowing smile.
Looking outside I find that it is getting dark which seems like a perfect excuse to stray from this topic. "Why have you not found a mate before now? You have a large pack and you seem to be well respected so surely you have had to have felt that pull with somebody else before?" I ask.
His smile seems to get more gentle as he replies, "I am sure that I have been waiting for the perfect one. The one chosen for me. As of yet, I am officially unmated but I have the feeling I will be a mated wolf soon."
"Oh! That sounds fantastic. I hope you do. You have been so nice to me. Your mate will be just as awesome as you are" I say trying not to let the unexpected jealousy lace my voice. "I am beginning to tire though, so I think I will head to bed for the night.
Getting up and quickly walking to the stairs I am surprised when Dante follows me to my room. "Good night Laina. I hope you have a great night and find everything you hope for soon." He says as we reach my room. Turning to say goodnight back, I am surprised when he leans in and kisses my forehead.
Stepping back hastily I say, "Goodnight to you too Dante. Thank you for the last couple of days. They have been better than any dream." I flee into my room, close the door and try not to think on my conflicting emotions as I head to bed.
I woke up to the bright sun streaming through the window and into my eyes. I have missed waking up to the sunlight and could definitely get used to doing so again. Stretching, I get up to find some clothes for the day. Seems like it is going to be a beautiful day outside so I look for shorts and a T-shirt. Clothes just seem to keep appearing rather consipicuously whenever I leave the room for any reason. As I grab the clothes that I plan to wear for the day I hear a knock on the door. Rushing into the bathroom, I yell "It's open!" Yanking on the red T-shirt and the shorts that are a little shorter than I had planned, I get ready to head back out to see who came to visit me."Well, don't you just look all bright eyed and bushy tailed this morning." Dante says to me brightly."Good morning Alpha." I reply while he physically bristles at the word."Good morning. Would you like to get some breakfast with me? No more of that Alpha business either."
After spending most of the morning with Dante, I went back to my room to read for a while before the cookout. When it gets closer to time for dinner and I can hear more pack members arriving it seems rather silly to keep hiding in my room when I can focus on practicing my social skills for a possible future mate. So far, the only person that I have been able to feel myself around is Dante. To be honest, I have not actually met many other people yet considering that I do not leave my room very often.Deciding to change into pants since it might get a bit chilly in the afternoon, I walk into the closet to find something. There are some black, stretchy pants that I do not seem familiar with. They do not look quite like pajamas but surely, they cannot be everyday pants either. They are way too soft to be everyday pants. Peeking out of the window from my bedroom, I look at what some of the other women are wearing. While most seem to be wearing shorts, a few are also wearing
After spending time talking to Amora I find myself at a loss as to who to meet next. My mind is still reeling on what she said about Dante so I find myself wanting to seek him out. Knowing that Amora is most likely still watching me I look for somebody else that looks welcoming instead. Quin is standing next to a female wolf that has a rather sweet look about her. She has brown hair, green eyes, rather short and seems like she is just easy to talk to. Walking up to them I look at her and introduce myself, "Hi, I am Laina.""Oh well all know who you are." She says taking my hand. "It is wonderful to finally meet you myself though. My name is Scarlett, and I believe you have already had a run in with my mate, Quin""I did not know that you were his mate but it is nice to meet you. We honestly have not really talked besides him apologizing for trying to eat me when I was a bird." I joke."Yeah, I heard about that. He has a thing for chasing birds. I do not think he
I cannot believe that I fell asleep! Crap! I planned on going back downstairs when everyone came in. Walking over to the door, I stick my head out of my door to listen and see if there is any noise travelling up from the party possibly still going on. Hearing more voices and laughter I decide to slip on another pair of those comfy black pants and a shirt, then head back downstairs. As I walk down the stairs I notice that I am starting to recognize a few voices. Kevin and Quin seem to be joking around and laughing but I cannot hear Dante. Once I get down the stairs I look around at all of the people gathered in the room. Most seem to be in their early 20's and late teens. Scarlett is with a group of females that are watching a romance movie and doing each other's nails. Dante, Quin and Kevin are all huddled around a dart board invested in what seems to be a heavily competitive game of darts."Hey! Laina! Come over here and join our game!" Dante yells excitedly.
Waking up nice and early I glance outside to check the weather. It is nice and sunny for our run this morning. Excited, I run to the closet to grab some clothes for today. I wonder if I can find something stretchy enough that it will not rip if I shift in it? I do not really feel like getting undressed in front of the alpha when it is time to shift. Might as well just grab out an extra set of clothes for afterwards.Deciding to eat breakfast first, I practically skip down the stairs to find some food. Then I stop. I don't know how to cook. How am I supposed to make anything for breakfast if I cannot cook. "Hey, Laina! Come down here!" I hear from halfway up the stairs.I walk the rest of the way down the stairs and into the kitchen to see my saviour standing in front of me with a feast of food made up. Dante asks, "Are you hungry this morning?" As if on cue my stomach begins to growl so I just chuckle and sit down. Dante starts to dish out some poached eggs
Deciding to shower before we start watching a movie I grab some clothes and head into the bathroom. My head is still filled with the idea that both Dante and his mother could be right and that I am his destined mate. Dante told me once that I was his and his mother had hinted at it but until my birthday tomorrow it is hard to believe. Still, until the mating process has been completed I am nobody's mate anyways. While washing my hair I decide that I would like to get to know Dante a little better in case I am his mate. I mean, we barely know each other and I have heard that once you find your mate you don't spend that much time at first talking, if you know what I mean. If there is any chance that he is, in fact, my mate this would be an ideal time to get to know him as well. After I get dressed, I head downstairs to the smell of fresh pizza with the opening credits of The Lion King playing. Grinning, I look at Dante who is waiting by the food and say, "I didn't
I wake up to this delicious scent. It reminds me of my mother's cinnamon rolls fresh out of the oven. I leave my bedroom and walk downstairs without even looking at my hair or my pajamas. The smell is divine so I follow it in a daze. As I enter the kitchen I see Dante in there and oh my goodness, it is cinnamon rolls! He even made bacon to go with them. Then, just as I get ready to attack the cinnamon goodness, another scent hits me. It went along with the cinnamon rolls so well that at first I did not notice it. It has a slight vanilla and cinnamon swirl smell, kind of similar to a snickerdoodle cookie. As soon as I register this scent, I look up at Dante with my eyes wide. The smell is coming from him! This is absolutely amazing! Not being able to control myself, I leap at him. He catches me, chuckling. "I warned you that you are my mate. I can't believe it took you this long to notice.""Is that why you smell so amazing?" I ask nuzzling into him like I was in my wol
When Amora arrives to the packhouse I have finally built up my nerves enough to not want to bolt from the room. She knocks on my bedroom door and walks in when I call her. "Happy birthday, dear." She says."Thank you. This isn't exactly how I pictured my birthday to go. Hiding in my room, away from my mate." I say rather sadly."That is quite alright. After this you can go and talk to him if you would like. I did not realize with you being so young when your parents died that they had not yet told you about how the mating process works. I have had to give this talk to a few other young ladies in the pack a few times so I should be able to answer any questions you might have." She says nicely."Alright. I just want to know what I have to do." I say nervously."It is so much of a have to as what you are going to want to do later on. Whether you want to now or not, eventually your bond will drive you both crazy until you end up completing the bond. It'll be
