Meeting rage

The annoyingly white walls of the hospital room seemed to close in around Emily with every passing hour.

The dull ache in her ankle was a constant reminder of the accident that had turned her life upside down. Days fell into one another, paused only by the arrival of nurses and the occasional routine of medication and physical therapy.

One bright morning, a new face appeared at the door. Dr. David Moore, young and charming with a gentle smile and warm brown eyes, introduced himself as the physician assigned to her case. He gave out a calm aura that put Emily at ease, a big difference to the hurried efficiency of the other staffs in the hospital.

David's visits became a highlight of Emily's day. He wasn't just interested in her ankle – he asked about her life before the fall, her dreams, her fears.

He spoke of his own passion for medicine, his love for hiking and exploring hidden paths a passion he hoped to share with her once she was back on her feet. He spoke very carefully, taking note of the raw emotions growing underneath.

One afternoon, during a session of gentle ankle exercises, David paused, his fingers brushing lightly against her skin."You're incredibly strong, Emily," he said, his voice low and warm. "Stronger than you realize."

The unexpected touch, the sincerity in his gaze, sent a blush up Emily's neck. Her voice caught in her throat, surprised by the way her heart had begun to flutter in her chest. "Thank you," she managed to say, the words barely audible.

As days turned into weeks, a comfortable silence blossomed between them. Sometimes, they wouldn't say much, content with the quiet companionship. David would bring her books to read, stories of adventure and faraway lands that transported her out of the confines of the hospital room. He'd fill her with tales from his own travels, his eyes sparkling with excitement as he described hidden waterfalls and breathtaking mountain.

One evening, as the sun went down below the horizon, painting fiery colors across the windowpane, Emily told David about her growing frustration. Recovery felt slow, and the uncertainty of her future weighed heavily on her mind. Tears welled up in her eyes, threatening to spill over.

David pulled up a chair beside her bed, his touch gentle as he offered a handkerchief. "It's okay to feel frustrated, Emily," he said softly. "Healing takes time, and it's not always an easy path." He paused, his gaze holding hers. "But you know what else takes time? Building trust, forging a connection with someone. And that connection, that trust… it can be a powerful source of strength."

His words washed over her, warm and comforting like a summer breeze. In that moment, she saw not just her doctor, but a kind soul, someone who genuinely cared. They sat in comfortable silence, a different kind of connection forming between them, one built on shared vulnerability and newfound trust.

One day, David arrived with a mischievous glint in his eyes. "I know you can't exactly go hiking yet," he said, "but how about this?" He pulled a folded piece of paper from his pocket and unfolded it, revealing a map. "This is a hidden gem in the city – a rooftop garden with breathtaking views. With a little help, we might be able to sneak you up there for some fresh air."

A thrill of excitement shot through Emily. The idea of escaping the confines of the room, even for a short while, was enticing. "Me? On a rooftop?" she exclaimed, a wide smile spreading across her face.

David chuckled. "Consider it part of your therapy," he winked. "The fresh air kind."

The plan was daring. But with David's careful maneuvering and Emily's newfound bravery, they managed to slip past the unsuspecting night nurse and went outside.

The cool night air washed over Emily like a wave of relief. The city sprawled out before them, a tapestry of twinkling lights.. The rooftop, tucked away on top of a high-rise building, was transformed into a secret garden, overflowing with amazing greenery and fragrant flowers. Fairy lights spread across the space cast a warm glow, creating a magical ambiance.

David helped Emily settle into a comfortable spot on a cushioned bench, the view before them stealing her breath away. The city skyline shimmered, a constant dance of light and reflection. The distant hum of traffic was a soft lullaby, replaced by the chirping of crickets and the gentle rustling of leaves.

"This is incredible," Emily breathed, her voice filled with awe. "Thank you for bringing me here, David."

"It was my pleasure," he replied, his gaze fixed on the city. "I thought you could use a little escape."

They sat in a comfortable silence for a while, simply enjoying the scene before them. Emily felt a sense of peace settle over her, a feeling she hadn't experienced in the sterile confines of the hospital room.

"You know," David began, his voice low and thoughtful, "ever since I met you, Emily, there's been something… different about this place."

Emily turned to him, her eyebrows raised in question. "Different?"

"Yes," he said, a smile playing on his lips. "This entire hospital, with all its sterile white walls and disinfectant smell, it suddenly seems a little less… intimidating. A little more bearable."

Emily felt a warmth spread through her. "Because of me?"

He chuckled. "Maybe," he admitted. "You brought light into a place that often feels devoid of it."

He paused, his gaze meeting hers. "You're strong, Emily," he said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Stronger than you realize."

His words echoed her own internal struggle, a sentiment he'd voiced before. Their eyes locked, and an awkward silence descended between them. The city lights seemed to dim, the only focus on the connection forming between them.

David leaned closer, his hand reaching out to brush a stray strand of hair from her face. His touch sent shivers down her spine, a delicious current sparking between them. Emily's heart pounded in her chest, a mix of excitement and fear growing within her.

Just as their lips were about to meet, a sharp sound cut through the tension – a sudden cough from the fire escape landing.Emily and David quickly pulled apart, startled by the intrusion.

There, standing awkwardly at the entrance, was Alexander. His face was a mask of fury, his eyes blazing with a fire Emily had never seen before. The surprise reveal shattered the intimate moment, leaving a heavy tension hanging in the air.

"Emily?" he growled, his voice laced with betrayal. "What's going on here?"

The sight of Alexander, anger radiating from him, sent a wave of confusion and hurt crashing over Emily. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. David stepped forward, his voice calm despite the tension.

"Mr. Thorne," he said, his tone laced with professionalism. "I see you've found us. I was just taking Ms. Steele for a bit of fresh air. It can be quite stifling in that room."

Alexander's gaze shifted to David, a flicker of recognition passing between them. His jaw clenched, and for a moment,Emily thought he might lunge at David. But then, he seemed to control himself, taking a deep breath.

"Fresh air," he repeated, his voice tight. "Indeed. Perhaps it would be best if Ms. Steele gets her rest. She has a long recovery ahead."

The night, once filled with promise, had turned into a tangled web of emotions. Before Emily could respond, Alexander extended his hand towards her. "Come on, Emily," he said, his voice clipped. "Let's get you back inside."

David opened his mouth to protest, but Emily silenced him with a look. She stood up, her legs still unsteady, and allowed Alexander to help her back into the sterile confines of her room. As the door closed behind them, she could hear David's voice, a low murmur cut short by the slam of the fire escape door.

The rest of the night passed in a blur. Emily lay awake, the events of the evening replaying in her mind. The stolen moment with David, the sudden appearance of Alexander, the unspoken tension between them – it was all too much to process.

Who was she to trust? David, the charming doctor who had helped her navigate the emotional rollercoaster of her recovery, or Alexander, the handsome and powerful businessman who had, despite everything, married her?

Sleep evaded Emily. The simple act of looking up at the white ceiling now felt suffocating. Questions fought at her: Why was Alexander so angry? Did he care about her, or was it something else entirely? And what was David trying to say when he was cut short?

The morning arrived, bringing with it a new sense of resolve. Emily decided to confront both men. David deserved an explanation, and she needed to understand the stormy look on Alexander's face the previous night.

As her morning routine started as usual, she found herself hoping David would visit. She longed for his gentle voice and the way he seemed to understand her unspoken anxieties. But instead, it was Sarah, the cheerful nurse, who came in with a forced smile.

"Good morning, Mrs. Steele," Sarah said, her voice lacking its usual warmth. "I see you're looking refreshed."

Emily offered a tight smile in return. "Yes, thank you, Sarah. Just a bit stiff from yesterday."

The silence that followed felt thick. It took all of Emily's courage to ask, "Have you seen Dr. Moore this morning?"

Sarah's smile faltered. "Dr. Moore? No, Mrs Steele. He requested another assignment. Something about a sudden outbreak at another hospital."

A wave of disappointment shot through Emily. Was it just a coincidence, or was David avoiding her after yesterday’s events?

Later that day, a knock on the door announced a visitor. She braced herself, expecting Alexander, but to her surprise, it was Isabella, her annoying demeanor replaced by a strange vulnerability.

"Emily," Isabella began, her voice surprisingly soft. "May I come in for a moment?"

Emily hesitated, unsure of what to expect. "I suppose," she said finally, gesturing for Isabella to enter.

Isabella walked in, her eyes flitting nervously around the room before shutting the door gently. "Emily," she began, her voice low, "there are things you need to know about Alexander and his family. Things he might not be telling you."

Emily's heart hammered against her ribs. Was this a confession, or another attempt at manipulation? "What… what do you mean?" she stammered.

Isabella took a deep breath. "There's… there's a reason why David isn't around anymore," she said, her voice filled with a hidden emotion. "He's not just a doctor, Emily. He's Alexander's brother."
