I tried to not scrunch my nose as the smoke from the pyres tickled my nostrils. My eyes stung from the tears that began to trickle from them and my fingers pulled nervously at the hem of my black skirt.

Grayson stood a few feet ahead of me, he was emotionless and though he had attempted to keep me out, I could feel his guilt eating away at him.

I have been to funerals before, but none could compare to this.

Grayson turned to me and took my hand in his. Together we walked through the crowd and back towards the packhouse as the flames began to lick away hungrily at the wooden pyres.

It was werewolf tradition to burn the bodies in the event of a death, so that our wolves may be set free from our bodies to roam the afterlife. Our ashes are then scattered in the forest, where we belong. A buffet had been set up in one of the packhouse's giant living rooms for the entire pack to attend, but upon returning home Grayson retreated to his office.&

  • The enemies around me.    Introduction

"Back the fuck up", I said as strongly as I could possibly make my voice sound. My mind was conflicted and swirling with lust, desire, and guilt. The thought of betraying my pack weighed heavily on my conscience, but there was no denying the elecrtic pull I felt between us,or the warmth spreading between my legs as I stared into his scorching eyes."Is that any way to address your Alpha?", Grayson said as he stalked closer towards me. His eyes a whirpool of Emerald and black."You're not my Aplha!" I cried. As I went to turn away a huge hand grabbed me by my wrist."DON'T TOUCH ME" I shrieked.Grayson cupped his hand between my legs, a hot pang of desire hit my core."Your words tell me one thing, but your body betrays you. Your pussy wouldn't be this wet ifyou truly wanted me to leave, now look at me".I struggled to avoid his searing gaze, but obediently my eyes tur

  • The enemies around me.    Chapter 1

I woke up to the smell of fresh pancakes. On any normal day the delicious scent of my mother's cooking would have me leaping out of bed, today is not one of those normal days. As I heard my mothers humming coming closer to my room I rolled back over and pretended to be asleep."Laila, honey. It's time to get up! I brought you pancakes to eat in bed but since you're still asleep I think I'll eat them myself".I groaned as I turned to look at my sweet mothers beaming face, her honey coloured hair was brushed back into a perfect bun and she had a smear of flour accross her pink cheek. As I raised an eyebrow at her, she gave me no time to respond before she pulled me from the bed and marched me towards the kitchen."What happened to breakfast in bed?" I whined as she continued to march me down the stairs."That was just a ploy to get you up, now hurry up and eat your breakfast. Your Father and brothers have already left for training".

  • The enemies around me.    Chapter 2

Marnie lived a few streets away from me. Her home was modest and clean but full of warmth. Marnie was an only child and her parents were both hard workers, but somehow always had time for their girl. They had always made me feel welcome over the years, going so far as to call me their second child. The house was empty which wasn't unusual so we strolled down the hall to Marnies bedroom, I confessed that I was aware of the BBQ my mum had planned. While she looked slightly disappointed in losing the element of surprise, she also noticeably relaxed as she explained how we would save getting all dolled up for later on tonight. I think the real source of her relaxation is seeing that I am ok with celebrating tonight, I can tell she would be crushed if I was ungrateful or not interested in going. After a quick shower Marnie pulled out an overnight bag and in it was a black and white striped t-shirt dress and my favorite pair of converse for me to wear. I was reli

"Holy jalapenos", I gasped as I took in the reflection that was staring back at me. My hair had been curled loosely, creating waves that went past my waist. The gold sequined dress I was wearing stopped mid-thigh and it caressed each curve perfectly, it's neckline came down low enough to give a taste of what I had hidden below and was paired with sky-high heels that showed off my toned legs. I could hardly recognize myself as my face had been made to perfection, my bright caramel eyes held a seductive look as they were adorned with gold and nude shades, my plump lips looked rich and inviting."Ok seriously, I know you are a werewolf but now I'm thinking you're also part witch!" I laughed as I appreciated all of Marnie's hard work."Well, I'm glad you like it, besides I only enhanced your features. The beauty is all you baby", she winked as she wiggled to the bathroom to finish readying herself. Marnie wore a short black dress that had beautifully detailed lace for slee

  • The enemies around me.    Chapter 4

As I watched the bodies that had been crowded around me part to create a walkway, I stood breathless as the most beautiful man I had ever seen walked straight towards me. He had to be the most enormous man I had ever seen, at a guess I would say he's 6'5. His muscular frame had a warm, sun-kissed glow, and peeping out from his black t-shirt was some form of tribal tattoo that went up to his right bicep and disappeared underneath. I wanted to tear off his shirt and follow where the tattoo lead, tracing every line delicately as I investigated his body further. As my eyes wandered upwards I let out a quiet gasp as I was staring into a pair of the most brilliant emerald green eyes I had ever seen. They shined so brightly, I felt like I could never be lost in the dark so long as I had those eyes next to me. His gaze set me alight, though I was in a crowded nightclub and had just been dancing, I knew the heat radiating from my body was purely from him. I had never felt such a sudden desir

  • The enemies around me.    Chapter 33

*** Grayson's POV ***Thud, thud, thud.Thud, thud, thud. All I could hear was the constant rhythm of my heartbeat, picking up its pace as it thundered through my chest and blocking out all other sounds.Thud, thud, thud.Fear. Fear was all that I was sure of at this moment.Cold, panicked, frozen... I was paralysed and I couldn't remember a time I had felt this way before. The fear of losing the one I loved more than anything, the one I was born to be with... it was consuming my very being, and now I feared for my mate's very existence.Laila had pushed me.I had seen Slade and his bitch mate slink out from behind the trees... I wanted to charge them, to take what was owed to me, his life. But they were out to play dirty, and the gun in

  • The enemies around me.    Chapter 32

*** Laila's POV *** I was quick to leap into the action. Though I was in my wolf form and could take a back seat, I decided to stay focused and alert. Amara and I needed each other if we were going to make it out of this alive. As Grayson and his wolf lunged forward, the wolves behind him showed no hesitance as they followed suit, their howls echoing off the trees that surrounded us.Amara sprinted to keep up with Grayson. Though I was sure he could handle himself, both Amara and I couldn't help our animalistic desire to protect our mate.My eyes flickered towards Slade, he was creeping away like the snake that he is. I wasn't shocked he was hiding away... I assumed he had no intentions of fighting today, at least not in a clean way.

  • The enemies around me.    Chapter 31

*** Grayson's POV ***As we stepped into the clearing, I was touched by the amount of support I had received from my pack. Wolves had travelled far and wide to fight for us, their pride in their pack and respect for me was something many Alphas could only dream of having.I could sense my mate's shock. I turned to find her frozen in place and scanning the many faces around us. Her caramel brown eyes were alight with wonder as she took in her surroundings, pride came off of her in waves as her eyes settled on my own.Seeing her here, about to go into what may possibly be the biggest fight of our lives, brought such anger to my heart. Though I was proud to have her as my mate, she was strong, compassionate and confident in fighting for her pack as their future Luna, I h

  • The enemies around me.    Chapter 30

"My love, wake up"."Hmm?", I asked, my voice laced deeply with sleep."They're almost here. The fights about to begin"...The words met my ears, but it took a while for my brain to fully understand what Grayson had just said." "They're almost here" " ...My body shivered at the thought of Slade and his fighters coming to our home, wanting to tear up everything and everyone we loved. He wouldn't win, I would make damn sure of that."Are you ok?", Grayson asked as he paused dressing himself to look at me."Yes", I said as I shook off all remaining sleep from my mind, "Are you?".Grayson had fought before, many a time, but this time it was different. Through our bond, I had access to a lot of his mind, and while I could feel he always entered a fight confident, this time he was hesitant."Yes"."Liar".Grayson sighed as he approached me. He was dressed all

  • The enemies around me.    Chapter 29

Three days had passed since we had arrived back home.I had barely seen Grayson as he was busy evacuating the town, welcoming warriors that had travelled to help us in the impending battle, and training those who were willing to fight.I myself had been busy teaching the women all that I knew, Blake even offered to help out... whenever he and Brynn could keep their hands off each other for more than 25 minutes. It was still strange for me to see them together, my big brother and my sister in law, but I was beyond happy for them."Hey sis, could I talk to you for a second?", Blake approached me as our training session for the afternoon was coming to a close."Yeah sure", I smiled as he led me away from the group, "What's up?".I could see concern beginning to form on his face as he looked down at me, he shuffled on his feet uncomfortably as I stared into his eyes, silently demanding an answer.
