As we approached the territory line I could see headlights up ahead. I braced myself for what was about to happen and prayed this would be the beginning of a truce between our two packs.

I shook away my nerves as Grayson came around to open my door for me. Though his face held his usual unreadable expression, I could now feel through our mate link his slight nervousness and his unyielding love and sense of protectiveness over me. He sent me waves of strength through our bond, and I sent my own back to him. I walked towards the headlights with a renewed confidence.

My father stood in front of a black van. My brothers both stood to his left, while his beta, Luke stood to his right. Grayson and I stopped in front of them, just inches away from the border while Jaxon and the men who escorted me earlier stood behind us.

The air was warm and thick with tension, as neither side moved to greet the other. I was slightly offen

When I awoke the next morning, Grayson had already left for the day. I rolled over to snuggle with his pillow and inhaled his intoxicating scent as it danced around me. My mind was still reeling from the events of the past couple of days... Had my father and Grayson really spoken face to face? Last night felt like a dream, to see my family and Grayson together and maintain a somewhat civil manner was bewildering. Not only that, but they agreed to work together to protect me!As I adjusted my eyes to the light that was slowly creeping its way into my room, I searched through my mind for Grayson. I was just about to wish him a good morning when Brynn raced into the room jumped onto the bed."HEY SISTER, SISTER!", she yelled as she bounced up and down before reaching for me to join her. I shrugged and said, "What the hell" as I joined her, she was in such a jovial mood, who was I to spoil it?"Well let me see!", Brynn squealed with delight.

  • The enemies around me.    Chapter 20

Before the sun had the chance to rise and wake me with its bright welcome, I was already up and dressed. For once I was awake before Grayson, I had to sneak away from his warm embrace, his arms tightened around me as I wriggled, and I almost had to fight my own urges to stay. But, after last nights positive meeting I was filled with a new sense of hope and energy, and Amara was begging to be let out once again.I slipped on a jumper and a pair of running shoes before exiting out the front door quietly. I breathed in the fresh, natural air and let my feet carry me rather than overthink things like I usually do. I promised Amara she could have full control on the way back, but for now, I was desperate for a swim in the crystal blue lagoon I had come to love. My feet carried me there once again, as they had before, and I certainly wasn't complaining. The lagoon had become my private oasis, a secret spot for me to get away to.As I was about to strip off I stop

  • The enemies around me.    Chapter 21

Three weeks had passed since my family and Grayson had agreed to work together. Once a week my dad and Grayson would meet at the territory line and report back any suspicious activity or sightings. Since the Dark Moon pack and the Crescent pack were both on the lookout, there had been no sightings of Kirk or any other rogues/unfamiliar wolves for that matter, not even a whiff of a scent. The attacks on the packs, including Slades, had ceased. Rather than assault or murder our people, the attackers have been vandalising and leaving messages spray-painted into buildings. The messages were more or less the same each time, "We're coming for you mutts", "Tick-Tock, you're about to get shot", and so on. Despite all the petty criminal activity, we still were unable to catch the ones responsible, it was like they were ghosts.Grayson began to work from home more often, refusing to leave my side. Though there were no more deaths weighing on his already heavily burde

  • The enemies around me.    Chapter 22

"TIME TO GO BISH!".I turned to find Brynn standing on top of the breakfast table. She was wearing a neon green bikini and the largest pair of sunglasses I had ever seen.I burst out in laughter as she stuck a pose, her hands were on her hips and she was pulling a duckface while gyrating her lower body to a tune only she could hear. It was times like these that Brynn reminded me of Marnie. I had a feeling they would get along all too well, and I made a mental note to ask Beta Luke, Marnie's mate, to bring her along to the next border meeting."Alright, just give me 10 more minutes to finish packing our picnic and checking that I have some sunscreen", I giggled breathlessly.Brynn had grown tired of being confined to the town or the cabin she and Grayson's mother lived in further north. Grayson had kept us all under lock and key while the attacks were happening, even more so after my confrontation with Kirk and his men.

Fire.Desperation.Agony.These three words, these feelings and emotions, are all that I know right now.If someone were to ask me my name, I would have no clue. Instead, I would beg them to end my suffering... by any means necessary.I attempted to open my eyes. I could barely manage to hold them in a mere squint before they closed themselves. Water trickled out of the corners, it was as if they were attempting to cool down my body in any way they could. The cool tears soon turned scalding hot as they journeyed down my cheeks, torturously slow.My senses are completely numbed, I can't see, smell or even feel the ground beneath me. My breathing is laboured, coming out in short, heavy pants. I try to regain focus, to make sense of what was going on. Was I trapped in a dream?I feel myself beginning to blackout again, the pain was becoming too much to bear and I was almost relieved when sleep

  • The enemies around me.    Chapter 24

"Wakey, wakey".I could hear a muffled voice somewhere around me, but the burning sensation that had taken over my entire being was demanding my attention."Hey! I said get up!".I could hear the voice clearer this time, it had grown in volume and had a harsher tone to it. As I attempted to open my stinging eyelids I grunted as what I can only assume was a boot made contact with my ribs."That's a good girl, we didn't dose you up too hard this time. Didn't want you sleeping too long again and missing out on all the fun".That voice... It was a voice I knew, and it wasn't a pleasant one.I grumbled in response as I felt the force of the boot against my ribs once more. Ignoring the ache in my side and focusing on my breathing I attempted to lift my head. Immediately I was overwhelmed with a throbbing headache, and the heat that was still scorching my weak body reminded me it was still here.My senses began to slo

  • The enemies around me.    Chapter 25

The door to the room burst open, causing Kirk and the guard to jump up out of their seats. I watched as Laura looked toward the latest addition, her eyes filled with recognition and something else as she smiled at the stranger.I turned my head slightly to get a view of whoever had just entered the room. I was expecting to come face to face with the wolf responsible for my being here, why else would the men behind me jump up with respect, or was it fear?As my eyes roamed up the long legs of the man before me, I could feel my mouth fall open in pure shock as I looked into the eyes of someone I knew. Hope filled my heart as I thought I was being rescued, but that hope was soon crushed as it dawned on me, this wasn't my rescuer... He was my captor. His piercing blue eyes were lacking their usual warmth, instead, they had been replaced by an icy chill. His familiar friendly smile was gone, in its place was a smug sneer as he

"Laila?"."She hasn't woken up at all?"."She stirred when I found her, but since then she's been sleeping like the dead"."Oh, real appropriate joke, idiot"."You know what I meant".I could hear the soft, muffled tones of voices around me, but I couldn't make out anything they were saying. I felt as if I were in a dream. Everything was black and I felt as if I were floating away. Gone was the pain, the fear, the feeling of an unknown future, would I die or would I live?I was at peace, and I let myself continue to float into the darkness.**Two days later**The warm smell of apple pie enveloped my senses as I began to stir. Before I opened my still sleepy eyes, I took a moment to work out whether I was still dreaming or not.The events from the past few days flooded back into my mind. Memori

  • The enemies around me.    Chapter 34

I tried to not scrunch my nose as the smoke from the pyres tickled my nostrils. My eyes stung from the tears that began to trickle from them and my fingers pulled nervously at the hem of my black skirt.Grayson stood a few feet ahead of me, he was emotionless and though he had attempted to keep me out, I could feel his guilt eating away at him.I have been to funerals before, but none could compare to this.Grayson turned to me and took my hand in his. Together we walked through the crowd and back towards the packhouse as the flames began to lick away hungrily at the wooden pyres. It was werewolf tradition to burn the bodies in the event of a death, so that our wolves may be set free from our bodies to roam the afterlife. Our ashes are then scattered in the forest, where we belong. A buffet had been set up in one of the packhouse's giant living rooms for the entire pack to attend, but upon returning home Grayson retreated to his office.&

  • The enemies around me.    Chapter 33

*** Grayson's POV ***Thud, thud, thud.Thud, thud, thud. All I could hear was the constant rhythm of my heartbeat, picking up its pace as it thundered through my chest and blocking out all other sounds.Thud, thud, thud.Fear. Fear was all that I was sure of at this moment.Cold, panicked, frozen... I was paralysed and I couldn't remember a time I had felt this way before. The fear of losing the one I loved more than anything, the one I was born to be with... it was consuming my very being, and now I feared for my mate's very existence.Laila had pushed me.I had seen Slade and his bitch mate slink out from behind the trees... I wanted to charge them, to take what was owed to me, his life. But they were out to play dirty, and the gun in

  • The enemies around me.    Chapter 32

*** Laila's POV *** I was quick to leap into the action. Though I was in my wolf form and could take a back seat, I decided to stay focused and alert. Amara and I needed each other if we were going to make it out of this alive. As Grayson and his wolf lunged forward, the wolves behind him showed no hesitance as they followed suit, their howls echoing off the trees that surrounded us.Amara sprinted to keep up with Grayson. Though I was sure he could handle himself, both Amara and I couldn't help our animalistic desire to protect our mate.My eyes flickered towards Slade, he was creeping away like the snake that he is. I wasn't shocked he was hiding away... I assumed he had no intentions of fighting today, at least not in a clean way.

  • The enemies around me.    Chapter 31

*** Grayson's POV ***As we stepped into the clearing, I was touched by the amount of support I had received from my pack. Wolves had travelled far and wide to fight for us, their pride in their pack and respect for me was something many Alphas could only dream of having.I could sense my mate's shock. I turned to find her frozen in place and scanning the many faces around us. Her caramel brown eyes were alight with wonder as she took in her surroundings, pride came off of her in waves as her eyes settled on my own.Seeing her here, about to go into what may possibly be the biggest fight of our lives, brought such anger to my heart. Though I was proud to have her as my mate, she was strong, compassionate and confident in fighting for her pack as their future Luna, I h

  • The enemies around me.    Chapter 30

"My love, wake up"."Hmm?", I asked, my voice laced deeply with sleep."They're almost here. The fights about to begin"...The words met my ears, but it took a while for my brain to fully understand what Grayson had just said." "They're almost here" " ...My body shivered at the thought of Slade and his fighters coming to our home, wanting to tear up everything and everyone we loved. He wouldn't win, I would make damn sure of that."Are you ok?", Grayson asked as he paused dressing himself to look at me."Yes", I said as I shook off all remaining sleep from my mind, "Are you?".Grayson had fought before, many a time, but this time it was different. Through our bond, I had access to a lot of his mind, and while I could feel he always entered a fight confident, this time he was hesitant."Yes"."Liar".Grayson sighed as he approached me. He was dressed all

  • The enemies around me.    Chapter 29

Three days had passed since we had arrived back home.I had barely seen Grayson as he was busy evacuating the town, welcoming warriors that had travelled to help us in the impending battle, and training those who were willing to fight.I myself had been busy teaching the women all that I knew, Blake even offered to help out... whenever he and Brynn could keep their hands off each other for more than 25 minutes. It was still strange for me to see them together, my big brother and my sister in law, but I was beyond happy for them."Hey sis, could I talk to you for a second?", Blake approached me as our training session for the afternoon was coming to a close."Yeah sure", I smiled as he led me away from the group, "What's up?".I could see concern beginning to form on his face as he looked down at me, he shuffled on his feet uncomfortably as I stared into his eyes, silently demanding an answer.
