Chapter 2
Freya's pov "I have to apologize for my cousins' unannounced visit which contradicted our initial arrangement," he said. " But don't worry, I'll find a way to let them out and everything can go back to how it was". There was something about his eyes; sad and lonely, but I guess my pain and misery were greater. My gaze rested on the portrait of a beautiful woman in Michael's room. He did have a woman in his heart, I wondered. Why were they apart? Was that the reason behind his loneliness and sadness?. " Miss Rogers," he called, bringing me from my trance. " My cousins won't come here without an ulterior motive. I know it's going to be difficult, addressing me like a husband publicly, but we have to stick to it. That way, we both get to save the only thing that mattered to us," he paused , but I was unable to say a word, " so in the meantime, you have to stay in my room. I assure you, they'll both leave when they don't get what they want" "Pretending to be a happy couple, you say?" I asked, fear and tension written all over my face. "Miss Rogers, the contract States otherwise when a third party is involved. This is an agreement ..." He snapped, walking over to his wardrobe and bringing out a shirt, where I glimpsed female dresses amidst his. And then I wondered, what exactly happened to him? " I'll step out for a while, and do not touch anything" he said emphasising on the last words. He took a few minute to adjust his cufflinks before finally heading out. " Oh God! Will I be able to do these" I sighed, collapsing on the chair. But I couldn't get my eyes off the portrait. I took a few steps, ignoring Michael's warning as I held onto the portrait. "She's so beautiful" I whispered, mesmerized by the woman's striking features; Tall, slender, with long wavy blonde. I forgot about the fragile frame in my hand. It slipped from my fingers, shattering on the floor with a deafening crash. " Oh no, he's is going to kill me" I panicked, my heart racing. I trembled, disposing of the shattered portrait fragments. My mind racing, I dreaded confessing to Michael. Glancing at the clock, I realized he'd been gone an hour. Thoughts of Alexis and Raymond's schemes suddenly filled my mind. Concern drove me to investigate. As I grasped the door knob, Michael entered, our bodies almost touching. Our faces inches apart, as my heart skipped a beat. Our locked eyes sparked tension. His piercing gaze saw right through me, quickening my pulse, as my cheeks flushed. "What?" He asked, scanning the room, as his gaze fell on the shattered frame, his expression changing. I struggled to speak, confession trembling on my lips. "Don't tell me...." He paused, his eyes narrowing. I took a deep breathe, with images of my past flooding in. Will I face the same pain and torture like I once did? What would make this billionaire in front of me different from the one I gave my all to, the one who murdered me completely. "I'm sorry....Mr Smith" I managed to speak, my voice breaking as I closed my eyes, expecting the worst. "Miss Rogers, we had an agreement, you weren't supposed to touch my things. Why?" I opened my eyes as I saw his expression, cold and emotionless. As I opened my mouth to speak, he cut me off. "It's fine," he snapped, his tone firm. " Mr Smith..." " I said it's fine, Miss Rogers" he repeated, " sleep in your room tonight. I believe my cousin are asleep already" I nodded, feeling remorseful. "I'm sorry about the portrait" I said before leaving as he didn't utter a word, not one. I closed the ornate door in front of me as I walked gently to my room. But I never stopped thinking about what he said, about losing everything. What could he have lost to make him distance himself from everyone? Even at the wedding, he never genuinely smiled, only forcing one when we were together to maintain the facade of a perfect marriage. Well, I'll do what I should do for the next six months, and I hope everyone finds the happiness they seek. Ten hours later I was awakened by the sudden voice of a woman, echoing through the mansion. My eardrum almost ruptured as I approached, I took my last step as I paused the moment I locked eyes with the woman, the same woman from the broken portrait, likely the owner of the female dresses in Michael's room, Michael's only love. " What are you looking at?" The woman fired, moving closer to me as I stepped back. I didn't want to cause a scene. "Where's Michael, you golddigger!" She spat, her venomouus gaze piercing. The cousins exchanged sly smiles, revealing their true intentions. They were spies. "Just take it easy, Emma" Ray said "Michael'! Michael!" Emma's shrill cry echoed as Michael emerged from the shadows, my eyes fixed on him. There was no way he could put on a show in this woman's presence, this was going to be the end for Michael. His weakness stood before him, his facade would definitely crumble. "Em... Emma" he called, his face etched with surprise and shock as he locked eyes with her. she was still beautiful, but her long wavy hair had been replaced by a stylish bob. I watched her revealed a smile, revealing her dimples as she walked over to Michael. " Sweetheart, I'm back" she said as I looked away, Michael has probably lost his defences. " Why did you come? Why now?" He asked as I turned to face him suddenly, " Michael?" Emma cried, she didn't expect his response to be that lame and emotionless. " This is me. It's Emma. C'mon, we can rekindle what we had five years ago. Michael I'm sorry about five years ago.." "You will not speak of that. You won't speak of five years ago" he cuts her off and I wondered, what happened five years ago? " Emma, I got married yesterday". he said, his eyes betraying pain. I knew Michael still loved her. "This is Freya,...my wife" Emma scoffed, "Hell no! We can give her money," she paused, glaring at me ." Name your price. Anything, I'll give you. Just leave Michael alone, he's not supposed to hang around with a woman like you" "Emma, that's enough!" Michael snapped, as Ray and Alexis exchanged shocked glances. As Emma opened her mouth to speak, Michael's phone buzzed. He hesitated, then slowly reached for it, his eyes locked on Emma. Pulling the phone from his pocket, his gaze dropped to the screen. Suddenly, his expression transformed; horror, shock, and dread. Michael's eyes widened, his jaw slackened, and his face paled. This billionaire, once composed, now trembled. He stared, frozen, at the phone. Then, abruptly, his gaze snapped to Emma. I darted glances between Michael and Emma's impassive face. Narrowing my eyes, I sensed a dark connection. Before I could speak, Michael swiftly turned, striding urgently toward his room. "What's going on?" Alexis asked , but there was silence, stunned silence. I stood, perplexed, wondering; What message could evoke such terror? What secret linked Michael and Emma? The silence was oppressive, heavy with foreboding. Was it about five years ago?Chapter 3 Michael's POV [You're a murderer. You think no one knows, but I do. You're a murderer, Michael. You remember five years ago? The world will know about you now!] Horror gripped me, my mind racing with Emma's sudden return and its connection to the ominous message. Memories of that fateful night five years ago flooded back. I knew someone else probably knew about the incident of five years ago. Someone aside Emma and I knew about Bella's death. Bella; my little sister. Who on Earth would send this message? The weight of guilt still crushed me, refusing to lift its oppressive grip. I couldn't shake the feeling that I was responsible for Bella's death. The pain of losing her was worsened by the fact that I never got to say goodbye, never got to hold her one last time. The worst part was not being able to find her body. She was buried before I even regained consciousness, leaving me with a gaping hole in my heart. The thought of her being laid to rest without me being there
Chaoter 4Freya's POV"This isn't good. How did my ex-boss end up as Mr. Smith's stepbrother?" I thought, feeling uneasy. Michael seemed to sense my tension, but before he could say anything, my worst fear stood before me. Ambrose was too engrossed in giving Michael a deep look to notice me."Enough of me, Meet Freya Rogers, my wife," his introduction hung in the air like a challenge, and I felt a surge of anxiety. I coughed suddenly, the sound forced and awkward. It was now or never; I had to face this."Hi, I'm... Freya..." I started, but Ambrose cut me off."What! Is this your wife, Michael?" His eyes widened in shock, clearly stunned to see me among all the women he could have met. He might have controlled me and my body in the past. I might have loved him foolishly. But this time, I was no longer the naive and lovesick Freya. I was a desperate woman fighting to save my mother."C'mon, why the look?" Michael asked, oblivious to the tension. "I should be the one surprised; everyon
Chapter 5Freya's POVWhat has rain got to do with driving? I wondered, watching Emma's hand on Michael's arm. There was no reason to watch from afar; it wouldn't be a problem to walk over. I wiped away the tears that had mingled with the rainfall as I walked over, with Emma noticing my presence and clinging more tightly to Michael's body. I cared less, after all; there was nothing special between us, and Michael loved her."Sweetheart, like I said, I have to drive you," Emma said, reaching for the front seat, when Michael caught her hand, making her stop. "I'm fine... Emma, my wife will drive me," he said with a cold face, staring intensely at her. I closed my eyes, wincing inwardly as I watched them. Michael didn't have to be so hard on himself."Drive? She doesn't even look like one who's ever owned a car. Come on, Michael. You wouldn't want to repeat..." Emma's voice trailed off, but Michael's stern tone cut her off."Emma!" Michael's warning was sharp, and Emma's eyes flashed wit
Chapter 6 Ambrose's POV I gripped the wine cup with ferocious intensity, my teeth clenched in rage. The cup shattered in my hand, shards piercing my skin. The pain was nothing compared to the fury burning within me. Freya's audacity to raise her hand at me, simply because she was with Michael, was infuriating.A sly smile spread across my face as I wondered how they had met. "I'll crush you both," I whispered, my voice barely audible.Just then, I heard the soft sound of footsteps. Composing myself, I plastered a smile on my face. After all, the host of a party shouldn't appear irritated. "Ambrose," a familiar voice called out. I turned to see Emma, her eyes red and puffy from crying. I had never liked Emma, but at that moment, I preferred to see her with Michael than Freya. "The party's over, Emma. Why are you still here?" I asked, trying to sound nonchalant. Emma approached me, her mascara-smudged face showing how much she had cried. "Have you been crying?" I asked, already
Chapter 7 Freya's POV I opened my eyes, hoping that everything that had happened would be just a dream, and I'd find myself back home. I missed my mom terribly and couldn't wait to visit her again. "Waylen," I called, a smile spreading across my face. My son was adorable, inheriting his blonde hair from his father. I still couldn't pinpoint which trait he got from me. As I stood up, I realized I was wearing a completely different outfit. Confused, I glanced around the room. My gaze landed on the familiar portrait, confirming that I was indeed in Michael's room. But I wondered, had he changed my clothes? I pushed the thought aside, knowing he wasn't capable of such behavior. "Finally, she wakes," Michael said, emerging from the bathroom. My gaze, settlling on the droplet of water clinging to his chest. I felt a flutter, which I quickly suppressed, reminding myself that Ambrose was the only man who had ever held my attention. I looked away, my eyes fixed on the floor. "Did..
Chapter 8 Michael's POV "Why the shock?" I asked, observing Jason's dazed expression. I knew the truth was hard to swallow, but it was the only way for me to claim my inheritance ; the last thing I had left, at least until Emma's unexpected return. Jason's eyes narrowed, his brow furrowed in concern. "What if Grandpa demands a legitimate heir before handing everything over to you? What if he doesn't approve of your six-month divorce plan?" I let out a low, mirthless chuckle. "Enough of the what ifs," I said, my fingers drumming a restless rhythm on my thigh. "Do you think Grandpa bought the fabricated story about my marriage to Freya? I'm certain he saw right through it, even if he's pretending otherwise." Jason's expression turned thoughtful. "Why be so hard on yourself, then? And who knows, you might actually fall for this woman." He said as I burst out laughing at the absurdity of the suggestion. The idea was almost too ridiculous to consider. "Fall in love? Have I ever
Chapter 9 Michael's POV As soon as I read Grandpa's message, I sent a text to Jason. Given that everyone would be busy preparing for dinner, there was no need to track Ambrose today. That task would have to wait until tomorrow. I waited for what felt like an eternity before Freya finally walked into the house. I couldn't help but wonder where she had gone without a car. I gazed out the window, catching a glimpse of her face, they weren't the usual face she carried. I looked away as I glanced at my phone [7:49]. I still couldn't get my mind off the name she had called that night. If I could think correctly, she was calling the name in her sleep with tears in her eyes. "Mr. Smith," I heard her voice, which snapped me out of my thoughts as she knocked on the door before entering. My gaze rested on the short denim skirt she wore, and that was definitely the first time I saw her dressed that way. Well, I wouldn't call it attractive ; at least, not to me. "Where on Earth have yo
Chapter 10 Freya's POV I felt my spirit come out of my body at Ambrose's mention of my hatred for potatoes. No one knew about it, and I was glad I could come up with a reasonable explanation. He had already threatened to oppress me tonight if I didn't hold his hand. But my mind was fixed: I would make my son recognize me, even without joining hands with him. But I couldn't understand why my heart shattered again the moment Michael caught Emma from falling. I swallowed a large lump of saliva. At that instant, I felt stupid as I gulped my drink. "Oh, I'm so sorry. Sorry I slipped...I...am sorry," Emma said shakily before walking swiftly away. I knew she made it all up. Michael had done nothing wrong; we weren't in love, nor were we committed to each other. But why did I feel cheated on? I wasn't in love with him, was I? No, not again, not a billionaire again, and certainly not Ambrose's brother. Alexis finally broke the silence. "What was that, cousin?" But I couldn't muster the
Chapter 21Emma's POVI had just received a message from Alexis; Michael's mansion was empty, and it was time to keep a close eye on things. As the only one who could gather the information I needed from Michael, I had a crucial role to play. After all, I was Emma."Is he back yet?" I asked Alexis thirty minutes later, arriving at Micahel's abode."No, not yet," Alexis replied. "But why are you really doing this? You love Michael."I paused, momentarily silent. "That's exactly why I'm doing this. Because I love him.""Here, we forged a key to his room," Alexis said, handing me the key. "Be quick, Emma, and don't leave anything behind."I nodded, taking the key, and slipped into Michael's room. The familiar scent enveloped me, and I felt a rush of memories. Nothing had changed about him.My gaze fell upon my portrait, slightly cracked but still proudly displayed on the glass table. "Oh, Michael," I whispered, a mix of emotions swirling within me.This discovery only confirmed the lies
Chapter 20Freya's POVThe night dragged on, and I didn't get a wink of sleep. Being in Ambrose's mansion felt like residing in the devil's lair. I stepped out of my room, constantly glancing at the clock. It was already past 8. I needed to get to Michael's place as soon as possible. If he discovered I hadn't spent the night at the hospital, he might send his secretary to tail me. That was a complication I didn't need, especially with Waylen still missing. "Freya, you're awake?" Ambrose's familiar cold voice cut through the air.I turned to face him. "What are the cops saying?" I asked, frustration and confusion etched on my face.Ambrose's expression remained impassive. " Where was the last time you saw Waylen?" I pressed, impatience creeping into my voice.Ambrose's words dripped with sarcasm. "Are you nervous because you should be with your husband? Come on, Freya. Your husband will understand if you tell him you were searching for your missing child."I clenched my fists, tempted
hapter 20Michael's povI couldn't shake off the memory of that kiss with Freya. It was the same feeling I had expected to experience with Emma, but never did. I was perplexed by my reaction - I wasn't even attracted to Freya, yet her kiss had left me feeling lost.As I recalled her tears, I felt a pang in my chest. It was my first time seeing her so close. Her delicate features, long lashes, and brown irises had touched something within me. And those soft, moist lips... it was as if she had invited me in."Michael, you're so stupid," I muttered to myself, pushing the thought away. I stood up, grabbed my laptop, and focused on more pressing matters. Our company's annual event was approaching, and I hoped Grandfather would finally announce my official inheritance rights.I decided not to return to my mansion that night. I knew Alexis and Raymond would be lurking around, but I was confident I could handle them. After all, they wouldn't dare misbehave on my own property. However, my com
Chapter 18Freya's povI couldn't shake off the feeling; I think I love Michael Smith. But this was wrong; it broke the first rule. I avoided his gaze, unable to face him after Ambrose's call interrupted our moment."Miss Rogers, won't you at least pick up the phone?" Michael asked, his voice surprisingly calm. He didn't seem embarrassed or shy, which only confused me. I thought love was supposed to make you vulnerable and self-conscious."And...we were wrong to have...done this," he said, his voice trailing off. His words cut deep, and I felt a pang of disappointment. Didn't he realize I wasn't angry about what happened? Didn't he see that I wanted more?"Yea, I'm sorry too," I said, meeting his gaze. Our eyes locked, and a sharp pain pierced my chest."Can you...leave me here for tonight?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.Michael exhaled a low chuckle, his finger brushing against his lip in a gesture that made him look endearingly sexy."You know, Rogers, it's fine if you d
Chapter 17Freya's POVI slowly lowered the phone, my eyes locked on Michael's piercing gaze. "Mr. Smith, you need to leave," I said wearily, struggling to maintain my composure. He wasn't supposed to know about the call. Ambrose's words still echoed in my mind, and I couldn't let Michael suspect anything. But Michael's expression remained unyielding. "No, you'll come with me to the mansion," he commanded, his voice firm and authoritative. My demeanor shifted, as anger bubbled inside me. How dare he dictate what I should do? I clenched my fist, a silent prayer whispering through my mind for Waylen's safe return."I refuse to abide by your terms, Mr. Smith," I said, my voice steady despite the turmoil brewing inside.Michael's eyes narrowed. "We had a deal, Rogers. And you will not default. I thought we understood each other." His words hung in the air, heavy with implication.I looked away, swallowing hard, as the weight of my situation threatened to crush me."Mr. Smith, I...I just c
Chapter 16Freya's POVI felt overwhelmed, so I soaked in the tub to calm down. But my emotions ran so deep that I didn't even hear my name being called. It wasn't until I sensed someone nearby that I snapped back to reality, finding myself on the floor. As I struggled to focus, I saw Michael's worried face and felt his hands shaking me. I almost smiled at his frantic efforts, but I was too caught up in my thoughts. I couldn't shake the pain of my mother's actions.I closed my eyes, letting the darkness wash over me. But I couldn't cry anymore. I'd already cried too much."Rogers!" Michael's voice echoed from behind the door, louder this time. I thought he'd already left. I didn't have time for him, not now. My mind was consumed by a single thought; storming into Ambrose's home and revealing myself to my son. I'd stop at nothing to reclaim him."Rogers!" Michael called out again, his voice insistent. I hesitated, then responded, trying to keep my emotions in check."Go away! I'm figur
Chapter 15Freya's POV"I asked a question, Freya," my mom pressed, her voice firm. ''Who is whose husband?"I finally tore my gaze away from Michael, my eyes drifting back to my mom's inquiring face."Mom...it's not what you think...Mom, it's a...," I stammered, struggling to find the right words. But before I could continue, Michael stepped in, his voice smooth and confident."Mrs. Rogers, I ought to have done an official introduction. I'm Freya's husband, Michael Smith," he announced, his eyes locked onto mine.I glared at him, feeling a surge of anger and rage."How dare you butt in?" I snapped, my eyes blazing with irritation. "You have no right to disrespect my mom in this manner."My mom's voice cut through the tension. "Freya, have you been lying to me?"I took a deep breath, feeling a pang of guilt. "I'm sorry, Mom. I just...I needed the money for your health. I had no choice." I whispered, my voice barely audible."You know I'll never keep secrets from you. Besides, our marr
Chapter 14Freya's POV"Sweetheart, what's wrong? You look pale and sad. I was expecting your visit yesterday," my mom asked, her voice weak and shaky.Guilt and pain washed over me as I gazed at her frail form, confined to one position. My strong and intelligent mother, who had always been my rock, now lay vulnerable and helpless.I felt a crushing sense of guilt for keeping my marriage a secret. My mother would never have allowed me to make such a choice, not after everything we'd been through. She would have protected me from this mess.I knew I had to save her from the truth, at least for now. She didn't need to know."Mom..." I sobbed, overcome with emotion. My mother's condition wasn't improving. Her weakness was alarming."I'm sorry, Mom. I'm such a bad child. Sorry I couldn't visit," I whispered, wiping away tears as she placed her cold, wet hand on mine. I shuddered at her touch."Mother, are you okay? Aren't the doctors taking care of you?" I burst into tears again, but my m
Chapter 13Emma's POVI stood there, my fist clenched in anger and pain, as I remembered Michael's passionate declaration of love for that woman. It hurt, especially after our kiss just moments before ; a kiss that came after five years of waiting. He hadn't even hugged me, and now he was telling Ambrose how much he loved Freya, but his eyes told a different story."I want to make her pay," I whispered, my voice trembling with rage. "I want to crush her and make her cry. I want to make her feel miserable." A warm hand on my back interrupted my venomous thoughts, and for a moment, I wished it was Michael, declaring his love for me. But the hand belonged to Ambrose, his eyes filled with a mix of pity and anger as he gazed at me. "Ambrose..." I choked, my voice cracking as tears streamed down my face."I love him," I whispered, my voice trembling. "I love Michael... so much. Why is he defending his marriage to Freya?" I asked, desperately. "You told me it was all a sham, didn't you?" I
