The beeping of the heart rate machine was what clouded the quiet room, as was Emma’s attention on her mom, who was unconscious. Her mother was still on bed rest, but she was responding well.

She helped her mom move and adjust the pillows from time to time, but she was responding slowly to the medicine.

The beeping of the machine didn’t make Emma feel any better; it gave her a little bit of anxiety looking at her mom. She hated seeing her like this, and she was alone with her dark thoughts.

Amy had gone home to get changed before she came back to the hospital, so it was just Emma.

A nurse had come in and explained to her that she would have to be taken for rehabilitation, but she didn’t say how long it could be for, and that was another cost that Emma didn't account for.

But she wanted her mother to be okay. Emma’s lips were pursed in a thin line as she contemplated using the school scholarship money she was awarded as a down payment for her mother’s rehabilitation.
