Chapter 005
Esther's POV I watched as blood rushed out of my stomach. I felt dizzy all of a sudden. The next thing I heard was, “Help, she is bleeding!” an old man entered and placed his hands on my stomach. Before I could alter a word. I heard the sound of a commotion outside the ward and a group of nurses frantically rushed in. I couldn't comprehend what was going on. For a moment, I felt the breeze. My heart turns to ice. I could feel the nurses stitching my stomach. I snapped out of my gaze when one of the nurses said to her colleague; “She is safe, it is not a deep cut.” That is the last thing I registered before I closed my eyes, my heart in my mouth. I could hear their footsteps going outside the ward. Why did they save me? Why did they stop me from going to my son? My soul would have been with my son by now. “fuck!” I groaned, frantic with anger. An old man entered the ward as he came to sit beside me. I recognized him. He was the one that saved me. I felt like strangling him to death. My hand balled into a fist as I gritted my teeth. “Are you OK?” he asked as he placed his hands on my lap, trying to make me feel better. I swallowed the lump in my throat as all the tears I was struggling to hold back streamed down my cheeks in torrents. “I know, you might be facing a lot right now. But to kill yourself is not a good idea. Your future will be far better than your past, my child,” he consoled. Hearing his words, a wave of relief washed over me. I felt like something heavy was removed from my chest. “ Who are you?” I asked him as tears streamed down my face. “I'm just a cleaner here. I was directed to come and clean up the broken glass, then I found you bleeding,” he explained. I let out a heavy sigh. What he said was true. The future is far better than the past. But as long as I'm alive, maya and Micheal won't get away with this. “I'm leaving now. Please don't hurt yourself again,” I ignored him. I swallowed the painful lump in my throat. A nurse suddenly entered the ward and gave me my discharge papers. “You are free to go, ma'am,” she said. “Please take good care of yourself and take your medication on time,” she added. I gave her a nod of understanding as I got up from the bed feeling pains all over my body. It suddenly hits me that I don't have any money with me and I had nowhere to go. Driven with anger and frustration, I walked out of the hospital and hailed a cab which took me to my parents' house. *** I stood in front of the luxurious mansion, my heart beating faster. The last time I set my eyes on this house was the day before our wedding. ‘You either choose us or that fucking boy!’ My father's voice to me the day I left the house. A wave of embarrassment washed over me. I could have been standing there with my pregnancy news, about to break the exciting news to my mother that she would soon be a grandmother. My parents were right after all, they saw what I couldn't see at all. They saw what I couldn't see about Michael, but I was blindly in love. I remember when I used to lay on my mother's lap. I remember when my dad used to kiss me on the forehead any time I was going to school. It all changed the day I introduced Michael to them. I fell in love with him and rebelled against my mom and dad, just so I could marry him. Michael deceived me by making me feel safe in his company. My heart tightened in pain and anger as tears streamed down my face like a river. I regret knowing Maya and Micheal in my life. I wiped off my tears, sniffed and took a deep breath, gathering the courage to knock on the door. “Who is there?” my mother's voice, the voice I didn't hear for years, asked. I was rendered speechless as tears blurred my sight. She opened the door as her gaze fixed on mine. My mom looked the same as the last day I set my eyes on her. In fact, she looked younger and more beautiful. “Mom!” I shouted as I ran and hugged her tight. My mother froze there, she didn't even return the hug. She was confused and shocked. I knew she had millions of questions to ask. I was bothered by her lack of response. All I needed was someone by my side. Someone who I could cry on his shoulders. Someone I could express my feelings to. “Sweetheart, what is happening to you lately?” she asked as she gathered me around her arms. “Mom, my life is fucked up,” I managed to say as the words tasted bitter in my mouth. She gasped and furrowed her brows. “Let's OK, come in,” she gestured to me inside. I wandered around the living room and nothing changed. It feels like I just left the house yesterday. “Tell me, what is wrong with you, Esther? I'm your mother, explain everything to me,” she said as she sat next to me, her eyes shining with tears. I don't think I could narrate everything to her. My heart was breaking. All I could do was sob. My mother couldn't help but join me. She wrapped me around her arms, trying to comfort me, whispering comforting words to me. She was trying to be strong for me like she always does. “You have to tell me what happened. I'm willing to fight and make each one of them regret it,” my mother said with an assuring voice.Chapter 006Michael's POV “Is my mom still alive or dead?” I managed to ask as multiple thoughts crossed my mind. “She is alive. Fortunately, someone donated her blood to your mom and your mom is safe now,” the doctor said. I wiped off the sweats that rolled down my forehead as a wave of relief washed over me. “Can I see her please?” I asked the doctor anxiously. “Sure you can,” he said as he called a nurse to direct me to the ward. My heart skipped a beat when I saw my mom lying in the blue patient gown. I quickly rushed and pulled her into a bear hug and I almost burst into tears as her familiar peach scent filled my nostrils.I couldn't imagine life without my mother. I was not too close to my dad like I was with my mom, but when he died, I almost collapsed from a heart attack. “Mom, how are you holding up?” I asked softly. My heart was beating faster. She forced a smile on her face. It was written all over her face that she was in pain, but she tried to be strong. “I'm al
Chapter 007Esther's POV “Mom, Michael and Maya are having an affair, and they went an extra mile to frame me that I was cheating with another man,” I said as the words tasted bitter in my mouth. “What the fuck!..It's alright Esther, it's alright,” Mom said as she rubbed my back, trying to console me. I shook my head. “Mom, it can't be alright. My best friend snatched my husband, the woman I trust wholeheartedly,” I said in my hoarse voice. “I'm here for you, and I promise they will regret what they have done,” she said with an assuring voice. “No. No mom, it's not their fault, it's mine. I trusted both of them,” I said, my voice filled with anger and frustration. “I was involved in a car accident and I lost my unborn child and my womb. I can't give birth again,” I added as tears streamed down my face. I closed my eyes, feeling the truth sink into the living room like a heavy stone. My words hit my mother like a freight train. Her eyes widened as she looked at me, shock and di
Chapter 008Maya’s POV I was busy cutting vegetables, so that I could prepare fast food for Michael's mother, when I heard Michael's voice from behind me, soft and calm, “Maya.”I gasped before turning. My heart skipped a beat when I saw Michael on his knees holding a ring. That was when I realised he was trying to propose to me. “Will you marry me?” he asked. I froze in shock and surprise as tears of joy streamed down my face. “Yes, I will,” I replied quickly as I gently stretched my hand for him to put the ring on. He gently inserted the ring into my ring finger. The ring slipped onto my finger with effortless precision, as if it had been crafted solely for me. He gave me a small reassuring smile. A wave of guilt suddenly pressed down on me. I was about to marry my best friend's husband. What would people think of me? What would I tell our friends? Well, I definitely knew I would face criticism, but I wouldn't bother because being with the love of my life was all that matte
Chapter 009Maya’s POV “All done! You look stunning, Ms Maya,” the makeup artist said as she stared at me through the mirror with adoration. “Thank you so much dear,” I replied as I glanced at myself through the mirror. Wow! I really looked beautiful even though the makeup on my face makes me look totally different. My face glowed. My flawlessly made-up face radiated elegance, with perfectly blended tones, defined features, and a luminous glow that captivated every glance. It was my wedding day. The day I anticipated for years, the day I was willing to sacrifice anything for. I couldn't believe this day would ever come. I stood up, glancing at my wedding gown through the mirror, tears weighed up in my eyes as I blinked repeatedly, forcing it back so that I would not ruin my makeup. The intricate beading of my wedding gown caught the light. I admired every perfect detail of my gown. My eyes wandered to the wall clock. It was 5 minutes to our wedding. I grabbed my white hand
Chapter 010Maya’s POV I opened my eyes gently as the bright sun's rays projected at my face. I rolled back and forth, stretching and yawning. It has been a year of being divorced, and my life has changed completely. Changed for good. I'm officially taking over my father's company, after a year of dedication and determination, a year of mastering all that I needed to know. I have anticipated this day for a long time, the day I would resume office as the CEO of ‘Mave Company Limited.’ I stood up and headed to the bathroom. I fill the tub with steaming water, its rising tendrils of warmth curling around me. I sank into its embrace, feeling the heat melt the previous day's tension from my body. After what seemed like an hour of bath, I came out and dressed up. I wore my black suit, my face lit up with joy and happiness, feeling a weight of responsibility pressed down on me. The happiness I thought I would never have again. The happiness I thought Michael and Maya stole from me. T
Chapter 011Esther's POV “Good morning, ma'am, a man is here to see you, he looks like a CEO from another company, ” she said. What! a man? I wasn't expecting a visitor. Well, I'm the CEO now. I'll expect new people in my life regardless of my position. “Well, let him in, please. Oh, you haven't told me your name,” I asked as I leaned back comfortably. “I'm Jennifer, ma'am, your secretary,” she replied. I nodded as she made her way out. After a few minutes, a young man entered he dressed in a gray suit, holding a file in his hand. His blue eyes locked up with mine as I felt my soul trembling. He turned and slammed the door behind him gently as he walked towards me and stood. My mouth went dry as I swallowed hard, trying to quench the thirst in me. “Good afternoon, Ms…..?” he said as he stretched his hand, demanding a handshake, his blue eyes still piercing through my soul. I sat properly before throwing my hand for a handshake. “Esther, and are you?” I asked curiously, trying
Chapter 012John's POV I couldn't believe who I saw a few minutes ago. This morning, I entered the Mave company limited, angry and frustrated because, after the death of the CEO, the company had not yet appointed a new CEO for over a year now, and I owed them a huge amount of money. The moment I got the news that a CEO was appointed, I rushed to go and claim my money, but then I saw Esther, the CEO. Her beautiful face made my anger vanish immediately. ~I entered my car and sat, letting out a deep breath, replaying what just happened in my head. “wow! I really need to go back tomorrow, to see Esther,” I whispered to myself. I started the engine and drove home. The picture of Esther's face couldn't stop playing in my head when she came close to me and slapped me. I was glad when she slapped me because I used that opportunity to get closer to her even more. Shortly, I arrived home. I went straight to the dining table and pulled the dining chair to take my seat. I took a bottle of
Chapter 013Esther POV “Mom, we are in trouble, big trouble,” I said in my hoarse voice as tears streamed down my face. “Come baby, tell me what is wrong,” she said as moisture began to gather in her eyes. She came and gathered me in her arms. “Let's sit down first,” Mom said as we went and sat on the couch in the living room. I wiped off my tears and placed my briefcase on my lap, then brought out the loan file without a word. I handed them over to mom, who was seated beside me. She quietly collected the file and read through it. “Oh my God, fifty million!” she shouted as her hand went to cover her mouth in shock. Her tears dripped on the papers. One of us must be strong enough to console another. I placed a hand on her shoulder, trying to console her as we all sobbed. “Your father's name and signature are on the papers,” she whispered as she leaned her head on my chest. “It's OK mom, we need to figure something out,” I said softly. “I don't think our company has that much m
Chapter 019Michael's POV Fifty million dollars? Is she seriously asking me for fifty million dollars? What has gotten into her? Does she think she could get something from me after what her daughter did to me? “Are you alright, Mr Michael?” Mr Ethan, my manager, interrupted my train of thought, bringing me back to life. “ahh, yeah, yeah it's just….. Yeah, I'm fine,” I replied. “I noticed that for the past few minutes you weren't concentrating. Well the meeting is over sir, did you have anything to say?” he asked. “ohh…. No, you should all stick to what we have discussed earlier and make corrections where necessary,” I stood up before walking to my office. I stormed into my office and went and sank in my chair. I raked my hands through my dark hair, something weird had been going on with my gut since I divorced Esther. It was gnarling. I caught her cheating on me and I forced a divorce, and that was all I wanted. So why does it bother me so much? It was not that I didn't love
Chapter 018Mrs Williams, (Esther's Mom's) POV It felt late. I rose from the bed, yawning and stretching. My body has been rough and heavy lately. It's getting dusky outside as I open the window curtains. Still groggy from the long sleep, I changed into jeans and a t-shirt, then headed straight down to the kitchen to make some food before Esther returned. I started washing that pot when I heard Esther's voice from behind. It was almost a snarl. I sensed something was wrong. I swallowed the lump in my throat before turning. I saw her eyes darkened, the expression she wore was grim. Her eyes pierced through me. I could feel that the meeting wasn't successful. “He agreed to help us only if I had sex with him, mom,” her voice, barely audible, makes me shudder from head to toe. A wave of shame ran through me. “What the fuck,” I murmured, my eyes widened. I could see the pain and anger all over Esther's face. “Esther, it's OK,” I consoled as she turned her face away, allowing tears to
Chapter 017Esther's POV I woke up as early as 4 in the morning and did a little bit of research on the CEO who wanted to help us with forty million dollars. I found out that aside from being a CEO, he owns luxurious hotels and villas in America, the UK and England. I wonder why such a man with so much money would want something in return when he could just give us the complete fifty million dollars without even feeling anything. Well, maybe he needed what money couldn't buy from us. I just hoped it was something that wouldn't be beyond our power. My stomach flipped just thinking I would have to meet him in person. After a few minutes of research, I went back to bed, to take a nap before the sun rose, but the sleep wouldn't come. I kept rolling back and forth in bed. The curiosity of meeting such a successful person kept playing in my mind. I quickly opened my eyes when I heard my alarm ring. It was already 7:30 in the morning. It felt like I was lying there for 30 hours. I qui
Chapter 016Esther's POV I was lying on the bed, my gaze fixed on the ceiling fan as my heart weighed down with a deep suffocating sadness. The weight of yesterday's tension and pressure pressed down on me. I could have been in my marital home with my baby and my husband living our best lives. My child could have been walking by now. My child would have started calling me ‘Mom’ or ‘mama’. Maya took everything away from me. My husband, my happiness, my child and the trust I had in her. Michael foolishly fell for it. Who knows, maybe Maya was already carrying Michael's child, or she had probably given birth. “fuck!” it felt like someone stuck me in my chest, shattering the emotions I had so carefully built.Yes! Someone stuck with me and it was Michael. I thought the love we shared was real. I thought he would investigate deeply before making the decision he made. All my life I had been nothing more than an obedient wife to Michael, never wanting to trouble him. Enduring his excu
Chapter 015John's POV I branched to a bar and drank some coffee before making my way to the office. “shit,” I murmured as I gritted my teeth. I never expected Esther would choose to return the money in 3 weeks. I took the elevator as I stormed into my office angry and depressed. Does that mean I have lost Esther? Noo, I can't imagine life without her. This can't happen. So stupid of me! I could have needed my money in 5 or 7 days instead of 3 weeks. I need to do something, but I have to wait and see if she can really return the money within the due time. I reclined effortlessly in my sleek leather chair, fingertips lightly steepled, exuding calm authority as I surveyed the bustling cityscape through the floor-to-ceiling windows. I turned my chair towards my table. My eyes suddenly pinned a copy of the offer I made to Esther as a wave of frustration ran through my veins. I picked it out by reading through it again. I immediately hid the paper under my table when I heard som
Chapter 014Esther's POV I felt sick all of a sudden. My head began spinning, trying to comprehend what I just saw. “I can't do either of this,” I said in a pleading tone, hoping he could reconsider. Was John fucking crazy? How does he expect me to pay the money within ‘3 fucking weeks’ or I'll sign a marriage contract with him? “Well, if you aren't OK with any of these, I'll involve the court,” he said as his gaze remained fixed on me with unfaltered intensity. A simple smile was plastered on his face. I let out a heavy sigh before standing up to walk to him. My footsteps reverberated throughout the office. I stood in front of him. “What do you want me to do: kneel and beg? I can do that now! Please give me some time! Please have mercy,” I pleaded as I plastered a pity face on me. My heart kept pounding. “It seems you didn't read through the file I gave you. Well, let me explain to you. Your dad was supposed to pay me six months ago, but unfortunately, he died. May his soul re
