Growling low in his throat, Michael began running, as normally as he could at first, towards the woods that were not far from his house. It was because of this forest that he had bought his house so that he could be close to it and could run wild anytime he pleased. Naturally, the people of this town were very unfriendly towards werewolves and every other supernatural creature, but Michael had first come here on a mission, and had not planned to stay long at first, but had eventually fallen in love with the place, so he had stayed on for a little bit, and then found his house and bought it.
He had blended in perfectly, thinking that no one knew what he truly was, but apparently, he had been mistaken, because why would anyone kidnap his flirty neighbor as a way of baiting him or getting him to come to see them? Why couldn’t they just come up to him and say whatever they needed to say?
Once he had entered the woods and was sure that no one was around, he let himself go, partially shifted, and began to run as fast as possible through the thick forest. It was not difficult to follow Audrey’s scent, which was quite pungent in the forest as she had been wearing an overbearing perfume earlier, which he could swear that she had worn just for his benefit. The sun did not permeate this part of the woods, making it seem as though he had been transported into another world, but it was one he loved regardless. He moved easily through the forest, dodging trees and sometimes partly jumping on them as he pursued after Audrey’s abductor. Audrey did not deserve any of this. He did not know her well but knew that it was because of her fleeting association with him that she had been abducted by whoever that asshole was, and that asshole was going to be really sorry when he finally found him. If anyone had any beef with him, then they should take it out on him, and not on innocent people like Audrey.
This thought reminded him of his family, and what had happened to them, probably because someone had had a beef with his dad. They did not just take out his dad, whom they had a beef with, but had taken out all the innocent members of his family, and by some sheer luck … or curse, had left only him alive. Enraged, he let out a loud growl, followed by a howl, and ran faster, pushing well past his endurance limit. It would be easier to run faster than this if he were in wolf form, but he did not intend to go back to his house naked, and neither did he intend to blow his cover. He kept running, feeling the breeze across his face, moving his whiskers this way and that, and his hair streaming behind him.
The forest was green, with the smell of nature very pungent in it, and on a normal day, Michael would have taken some time to appreciate its serenity and beauty. Today was not a normal day, though, and it was better that he concentrated on what had brought him here, which was rescuing Audrey and finding out what her abductor wanted from him. Soon, he was in the heart of the forest and was beginning to wonder if he was walking into a trap when he stopped abruptly. He could feel it… they were close. He paused in his tracks immediately, listening in the mostly silent forest, trying to sieve out the sounds of frogs croaking, birds chirping, and other sounds, including the sounds of the insects. As usual, whenever he was in the forest, these animals seemed to know that a predator was around and quickly reduced the tempo of their cries, or stopped altogether. Concentrating as much as he could, he tried to relegate the noises of the animals that he was hearing to the background, and focus more on the one that he had thought he heard earlier… the sound of heavy breathing.
Surprisingly, the sound was closer than he had realized, and turning on his heel, he stealthily made his way in its direction to find a small ramshackle shack, one that he had never noticed on his earlier runs in this forest. Studying his surroundings, he did not notice anything amiss, so raising one foot, he kicked at the rickety door of the shack with such force that it detached from its hinges immediately, so that it flew off and landed with a thud against the wall opposite it and then bounced back. There was a muffled scream, and he swung his head in the direction from which it came, to see Aubrey sitting in a chair. The uprooted door had missed her by mere inches, so it was not a wonder that she had screamed, or at least, tried to do so. She was bound to the chair on which she was sitting, partially gagged and blindfolded, and there was a man who was holding a knife to her throat. A quick look around the room showed that the man was alone.
“Let her go this instant!” Michael commanded angrily, immediately shifting back to his human self. There was no way he would blow his cover to the humans among which he lived, no matter what.
“Oh, my God! Michael, is that you? Yes, it is. Thank God you came. This guy is really crazy. He kidnapped me and drugged me. One minute, I was leaving your house to go back to mine, and the next, this animal was placing a handkerchief over my face and bringing me here. I only just woke up to see myself here and bound to this chair. Are the police here? I want him prosecuted for this.” Audrey spoke, as fast as she could, apparently not minding that the man held a knife at her throat. She was quickly reminded when he gave her a sharp tug and spoke gruffly.
“Keep your mouth shut, bitch! It’s you I need to talk with.” The man said, but the last sentence was meant for Michael, who was still standing in front of the door that he had kicked in and trying to figure out the man. He had never met this person before, of that he was certain, so he did not know what on earth the man could want with him. Good enough, the man did not look threatening, but even if he did, Michael was sure that he could take him on. If anything, the man looked really scared, as though he was not exactly sure what he was doing, and now that Michael really looked at him, he realized that this person was not a werewolf. In fact, he seemed to be a regular human, or maybe not so regular because there was something about him that Michael couldn’t place his hand on, at least not at the moment.
“You have her bound to a chair and gagged. Step out like a real man and let us go and have the conversation outside.” Michael challenged, not missing the way the man gulped at this suggestion and went even paler than he already was. He was an average-sized man, with dark hair and a somewhat slender build.
“You heard the man. Go outside with him and have a conversation with him like a fellow man, not like a coward who kidnaps unsuspecting women.” Audrey added her input, regaining her confidence now that Michael was around. Apparently, Michael’s presence filled her with false confidence.
“Audrey, please keep quiet and let me handle this,” Michael told her, so she grudgingly kept her mouth shut, but not before having a final say.
“Fine. I don’t like being told to shut up though, just so you know, in case of next time.” She finished, pouting, but Michael did not even spare her a glance. Instead, he was more focused on the man, who was now visibly sweating. It was very easy to see that he was quite nervous.
“Who are you and what do you want with me?” Michael asked the man.
“I know who killed your family and I’m here to help you get your revenge against them.”
The silence in the clearing in which the members of the pack were gathered was deafening, and the tension was thick and palpable. The two werewolves - the alpha and his beta, squared off each other, both waiting for who would make the first move or throw the first punch. They were circling each other slowly, making low growling sounds in their throat as they moved around the clearing, which had been cleared of the wounded. The alpha was taking his time, and it was evident to all those who watched the fight that he did not want to do this. He did not want to have to fight with his son if he could avoid it, so he was stalling on throwing the first punch. Jonas had no such reservations, so the minute he saw a chance, he took it, and slammed his bunched fist straight into his father’s face, immediately drawing blood. The alpha roared loudly, but not in pain as one would think. Instead, the roar was a sound of defeat, anger, and hurt from the betrayal. Without warning, he slammed his fist
The onlookers watched the fight with bated breaths, everyone in the clearing rooting for their alpha. The black wolf, which was Jonas, was severely injured, while the grey one had only a few bruises on him, and was looking as though he was getting ready to finish off the fight. Sophia watched this scenario with glee, immediately dismissing her strange experience as a pain-induced dream and mentally cheering her grandfather on, even though she felt really faint. The black wolf was beginning to panic now, and as the grey one pinned it down, and raised its hand, as though it wanted to use its claws to finish it off, the black wolf's panicked eyes darted frantically about, searching somewhere beyond the clearing. Suddenly, something the old woman had said in her trance, dream, or whatever it was, came back to Sophia, clear as day. “It doesn’t seem like it just yet, but Jonas is going to win that fight that is going on now. He has something planned that will give him the upper hand.” Soph
Sophia came to after what must have been several minutes, or even about an hour at the insistent tugging of her mother’s hands on her arms and her faint groans. They were still where they had fallen some meters away from the lair and the ongoing fight and chaos, which had died down a bit but was still ongoing. Taking a quick look at Maria, Sophia saw that her mother only looked slightly better than when they had first started running away from the clearing.“Run… you need to run away, Sophia. They’re coming for us. I won’t let them have you…” Maria said once she was certain that she had Sophia’s attention, but Sophia was not having any of it. She got up on wobbly legs and tried to pull her mother along with her, but her mother resisted. Even in her weakened form, she was much stronger than Sophia, so it was like pulling a brick wall.“Mom, I won’t leave you alone. They’ll kill you. I know they will.”“They won’t.” Maria lied, knowing very well what would happen, but she had been a disa
Michael stared at the man warily, not knowing what to make of him or if he should even believe him. Duncan looked quite sincere though, but apart from that, he looked really worried, although Michael guessed that that was because he was scared of what would happen to his fiancée. “You do know that I can tear you from limb to limb without breaking a sweat if it turns out that you’re lying, don’t you?” Michael asked him quietly, and the man nodded effusively. “I know, but I’m telling you the truth. I have nothing to gain by lying to you and everything to lose. Look, we both have something to gain here. You help me get my fiancée back, and I’ll take you straight to the person who is responsible for your family’s death.” “You keep on going on and on about me helping you to rescue your fiancée. What even makes you so sure that I can even help you?” The man averted his gaze before answering, suddenly looking very uncomfortable. “I just know. You’re a strong werewolf and you have a reputa
“I used to live down the street from you guys and was kind of friends with your older brother, Matt, as we were in the same age grade.” Duncan started, glancing away briefly when Michael’s eyes hardened a little at the mention of his older brother. “Those days were bad ones for me, and I hate to remember them, but if you’re to know what happened, I’ll need to relive them.” “I’m sorry about that. However, I’m sure reliving those days is going to be much worse for me than it is for you. I can’t remember you, though.” Michael stated somberly. To date, he still remembered his elder brother, who had been ten years old when the incident occurred, but only vaguely. They had been close, and Michael remembered his brother trying to teach him how to ride a bicycle, even though he had only been a child himself, and how they had caught frogs in the pond a few meters from their house back then. He smiled fondly at the memory but was soon brought out of his reverie when Duncan continued his story.
“Look, all this talk is just a waste of time. Let’s get going immediately. You’ll fill me in on what I need to know on the way there. There’s not a second more to be wasted.” Michael said abruptly, the rage beginning to rise within him as he pondered on all that Duncan had told him. He began to stride away as fast as he could, knowing that Duncan would follow him when the latter’s voice rang out.“Um, what about the girl?” Duncan asked hesitantly. Michael thought he could detect a faint tinge of shame in his voice. “Dammit! What even possessed you to kidnap her in the first place? Now she’s only going to cause us to waste time.” Michael yelled, kicking hard at a tree trunk and causing a sizable chunk of it to fall off the tree. He ignored Duncan’s gulp of fear at this action and took a deep breath to calm himself down before pasting a smile that he knew looked fake even without seeing it on his face. Then he headed to the shack in which Audrey was still tied. She was clearly angry and
The woods were rife with nocturnal activities, such as the sounds of little animals scurrying around, and other larger animals that Sophia steadfastly refused to think about. She could hear them pausing and continuing their movements, apparently viewing her as no serious threat as she slowly trudged through the bushes. She could not blame them either, after all, this was their time to move around, plus they were in their territory. Sophia had since lost track of time, and all that mattered to her now was getting as far away from the lair as possible, even though she did not know where on earth she was to go, or the dangers that she would meet on the way. She would have loved to think that she had put as much space as possible between herself and the lair, but the truth was that she did not know if that was the case or not. All she knew was that she had to keep going, moving, and never stop, until she keeled over, after which she would recover, stand up, and continue on her way. It wa
The night was still and quiet as Michael and Duncan drove through it. They did not meet anyone or see any other car on the way, making it seem as though they were the only ones in the whole wide world. Duncan sat on the passenger’s side, dozing and snoring with his mouth wide open. His complexion was still pale, but he looked far better than he had three days ago. In fact, three days ago, after Duncan had used the spell on Audrey to make her forget about the encounter in the bush and the fact that Duncan had kidnapped her, Michael had been fairly certain that the man was going to die on him.Totally exhausted, Michael pulled over to the side of the road, intending to take some time to rest, even if it was ten minutes. As soon as he pulled over though, Duncan came awake slowly and glanced around in a panic. Michael stared at him with raised eyebrows.“What? Why… where are we? Are we safe?” Duncan asked, wiping the remaining traces of sleep from his eyes as he looked around them, but th
