Lia took a deep breath, filling her nose with the relaxing scent of sun-warmed pine needles and fresh air tinged with the dampness of a light rain. It was as though a sun shower had just washed over the yard and she was dozing in a lawn chair under a tree in her yard. She felt a gentle breeze coming and retreating like breath through the hair on top of her head She could hear a steady thumping, like the bass of a song beating out a steady rhythm through earbuds that must have slipped from her ear as she slept, just far enough away that she could make out the rhythm, but not hear the tune. She felt warm and tingly from head to toe. Perfectly happy and comfortable. It must have been a good dream, she thought vaguely. She decided to try to go back to sleep and dream it again. Rainbows spread across her closed eyelids and she sighed happily.
“Home,” she whispered softly, snuggling into the warm, pleasant scent with a smile on her lips.Suddenly the sweet-smelling warmth that enveloped her was replaced by the feel and smell of cool, crisp, clean linen. There was something odd about it niggling at the edges of her consciousness, but she didn’t want to wake up yet so she pushed the thought aside and focused on the fading rainbows, wishing the warmth would return and whisk her away again.“Lia?” Ellie’s voice almost convinced Lia to open her eyes, but she wasn’t ready for that yet. She snuggled down again, breathing deeply, and froze.Lemon?Gran’s homemade laundry soap was always scented like lavender. Lia gasped and sat up so suddenly that her eyes faded to black for a moment. She felt hands on her arms helping to steady her. As her vision cleared she looked around in shock. Where was she?The walls were all log, just like at home, but it smelled different, like citrus rather than dried flowers. The room was much bigger than any space at home, and the post and beam ceiling was much higher. There weren’t any flowers hanging from it either. There was a large chandelier in the center of the room though, and she had a vague memory of thinking it would be fun to swing from there, but she had no memory of ever being here before so she didn’t know when that thought had occurred to her. Scowling slightly she looked around again, slowly becoming aware of the other people in the room. One of them walked quickly past and when the cool breeze of their passing brushed over her breasts she realized that she was naked. Lia grasped the sheet quickly with both hands and lifted it to cover herself.“Calm down, Lia,” Elsie said softly, helping her adjust the sheet, “we’re safe here.”“Wolfsbane...” Lia said softly as the memory came back to her. “There was wolfsbane in Grans attic?”“Apparently,” Ellie said, “all four of us were poisoned by it. We’re at….er….I guess you could call it another healer’s house? Anyways, Elsie and I woke up a few days ago and you just now. Gran’s doing okay, but still asleep. See?” She pointed to the cot a little closer to the fire. “They think she’ll be fine though, it’s just taking time because...because...”“She’s old,” Lia supplied. Ellie nodded, but there was something about the look on her face that made Lia narrow her eyes. Was her friend lying to her?“You’re sure they said she’ll be okay?”“Well yes, but they can’t know for certain until she wakes up. Her heart rate is more stable than it was so they’re pretty confident that she is over the worst and just needs time. They’ve treated her as much as they can, all we can do now is keep her hydrated and wait.”Liana nodded, taking in her surroundings again before looking down at the sheet she was holding. “Uhm...”“They had to take our clothes off, nobody knew what part of us the poison had touched. Besides, my dad said we’d vomited all over ourselves by the time he got us here so we wouldn’t want them anyways. Here,” Ellie pulled a bag out from under the cot. “Mum and I went back to the cottage once they checked it out for poison. They didn’t find any in the attic by the way, which was odd since that’s where we were.“Gran keeps all her poisons in the chest by the back door, there shouldn’t ever have been any in the attic. It’s too risky with all the edibles up there.”“That is odd. Anyways, we brought some clothes and stuff for you. I made sure your favourite sweater and jeans are on top. Your hairbrush and bathroom stuff is in the outside pocket.”“Thanks.”“Do you want some food? Something to drink maybe? It’s been days since you ate.” Ellie waved her hand to indicate the few people who were scattered around the room. “You can ask any of these people for whatever you want and they’ll bring it. They’re called Omegas, it kind of means waitress, concierge… maid maybe? Basically, you call “Omega” and the closest one to you will come over right away. Talking to one of them is like talking to all of them. Whatever you want just happens. One of them will even come in from another next room if there aren’t any here, you ask them for what you want and another one will show up with it. Whoever, it can get here the fastest. They can hear you from anywhere, sort of like an intercom system or something.”“You’re talking too fast Ellie,” Elsie interrupted, drawing Lia’s attention. “The point is they’re at your beck and call and will do whatever you want. They might ask that woman by the fire first, they call her Mother Luna, she’s their...er...chief healer, but usually, you’ll get whatever you’re asking for.”“Think of it like a hotel with awesome room service!” Ellie said excitedly. “They even made Elsie her favourite mutton stew last night! Everyone else was eating steaks, but she prefers stew, so they made her one! Isn’t that neat? And I said I’d like duck pate for breakfast, I didn’t even ask for it, I just mentioned it to mom in passing and it was waiting for me when I woke up! Here, let me help with that.” Ellie held the sheet up to keep Lia covered while she slid the sweatshirt over her head. “They’d bath and dress you if you asked,” Ellie confided in a whisper, “but that’s just creepy.” Lia shivered. These strangers would think nothing of being asked to give her a bath even when she was awake and able to do it herself? That seemed very strange indeed.Several hours later, after eating some venison broth and drinking ginseng tea, Liana was sitting on her cot with Ellie and Elsie. They were alone in the room, aside from her unconscious Gran. The two nearly identical girls were looking between each other and back to Liana as though they had something horrible to tell her. Lia glanced to her gran, who still hadn’t moved. Was she not really okay?“Lia… Damn this is hard.” Ellie sighed, covering her face with her hands for a moment. “I don’t even know where to start. I should have asked mom for ideas about where to start. I think she’s gone home now though, so I can’t ask her.”“Is Gran-”“Oh no,” Elsie said taking her hand. “It’s nothing like that I promise. It’s just...well a bit awkward and...” She looked at Ellie, who was usually the more social and talkative of the two.“Uhm… Okay,” said Ellie quickly, “You know all those wolf pictures on the fridge that you always laugh about? It isn’t just that we like wolves. I mean, that would be kinda weird, right? Sheep farmers, who love wolves? But that’s what we are.”“Oookaaay...” Lia said skeptically, still not sure what this conversation was about.“She means we are wolves, no that we are weird sheep farmers.” Elsie supplied into the silence.“What?”“Okay, remember that picture beside my bed? The one with all those wolves on it that you thought was a strange picture to have in a frame on a bedside table? Well, it isn't a National Geographic photo I put in there, it’s uhm… It’s a family photo. We’re werewolves.”“Werewolves?”“Yep.” Lia looked from one set of grey eyes to the other, trying to decide if they had suffered brain damage from the neuro-toxin, were testing to see if she had, or if by some strange twist they were actually being serious. But they couldn’t be serious, could they? Werewolves? Were werewolves real?“Remember the picture?” Ellie continued, “Two full-grown grey wolves, The Timberwolf is Mom and the Irish grey wolf is Dad. Then three a bit smaller, that’s me, Eddy, and Elsie. You can tell which one is Elsie because the strawberry birthmark on her right leg grows a different colour fur than the rest of her, her one hind leg it’s reddish brown instead of grey, Eddy and I are just grey and white. Obviously, he’s the one with the dick showing. He was too proud of that thing to stick a leg in front for the photos.” Elsie gave her sister a nudge to get her back on topic. “Okay. So then the smaller ones are the pups, Felicity, Freya, Kassie, and Kevin. That picture was taken right after Kevin’s first shift, he was the last one of us to shift, so it’s our first ever picture with us all in our wolf form! That’s why it’s special to me and why it’s beside the bed.”Liana was silent for a moment, thinking about what they were saying and remembering a few strange moments that she’d always held in her memory because they never quite made sense, but now they did. Not just the wolf pictures all over the house, but sheep farmers whose lambs were always skittish around people? How their vacations always coinciding with the full moon and how cats would always hiss as they walked past. Was it odd that she wasn’t even questioning this? She just knew it was true somehow.“That... kinda explains the smell,” she said simply.“The smell?”“Well you know how Gran has always given me smells to learn?” Lia said, “It isn’t always a herb or flower. There is one scent in particular that she never named, but she told me it was pure evil, the worst kind of danger and I should always be afraid of it. If I smelled that smell, I was supposed to get to your place as fast as possible. The strange thing was, I sometimes caught a whiff of it at your house, which was confusing because why would a scent I should run from be in what was supposed to be the safest place? But I guess if she wanted me to stay away from werewolves, she would have taught me to stay away from some smell almost every werewolf has, but that smell would also be in your house at least sometimes if you were all werewolves.” She shrugged, looking from one girl to the other to see if she was making any sense.“You’re taking this a lot better than I expected.” Ellie said.“It’s been years since you thought all the werewolf tales were anything but silly sto
Lia sat cross-legged on the library floor, leaning back against the base of the overstuffed sofa and flipping through the children’s books and werewolf chapter books for young pups. Ellie and Elsie had left a while ago, promising to be back soon. All these stories about the moon goddess were so captivating! Why had her grandmother told the stories so differently? Here the goddess is seen as a protector of werewolves and the guardian of the earth! That is so much more consistent with the healing properties of the plants picked by moonlight. They say she watches over people and influences their moods and choices to keep them safe. Gran always said that Eric had too much energy during the full moon. She obviously knew the goddess effected moods, but had never once shared that information. Then there were some about the goddess match making and planning the destiny of werewolves, trying to bring peace and unity to all. She is always making happy unions and granting fertility to worthy wolv
Jake’s heart skipped a beat as he looked down into the crystal blue eyes of his intended. They were the same colour as the water around a glacier, with a darker, almost violet ring in the center of them. He remembered her mother’s wolf, then looked at the thick, shinny white hair that was cascading over her slender shoulders and realized her eyes would be blue as ice water and her fur as white as snow. His wolf growled in appreciation. Jake didn’t realize he’d actually made a noise until Liana’s eyes widened and she stepped back in alarm.“It’s alright, Lia,“ David said reassuringly, “When a wolf rumbles like that it’s sort of like men whistling from a construction site, but it isn’t considered rude among werewolves. Once a female has found her wolf she usually really enjoys hearing that sort of appreciation from a male. It makes her feel pretty and cherished….or so my wife tells me.”“I’ve heard you do that before,” Lia said accusingly, her attention still fixed on Jake. “I’ve heard y
“Are you going to say anything Lia? We’ve still got a half hour left to drive.” Lia ignored David’s question and leaned forward to turn up the radio. No. She was NOT going to have a conversation or even make small talk. She sat stiffly in the cab of Jake’s truck, wedged in between Jake and David, squeezing herself even tighter than necessary as she tried not to brush up against either man at all. Annoyingly, Jake wasn’t taking the hint and seemed to be spreading himself out to brush up against her every chance he got. The tingly feeling on her skin and the stupid buzzing noise in her head were not helping her mood. A Department of Natural Resources van was following behind them filled with what Jake insisted were his ten best warriors. It was the only way he would agree to let her go to her own home to collect some of her things. He’d only agreed to the trip at all when she’d yelled at him over breakfast that she was not his prisoner and he had no right to keep her there against her w
Jake sighed and shifted his weight a bit, trying to get the feeling back in his left leg. He was pressed up against the door so tightly he’d cut off circulation, and still Lia wasn’t happy. Why was she acting like this? David and Marie insisted that she was normally very friendly and rarely complained about anything. To him, she seemed to be socially avoidant and perpetually grumpy. He understood that she was worried about her Gran, but there had to be more to it than that. Reasoning with her was impossible, she wanted what she wanted and that was it. Every time she didn’t get her way she became silent and sulky with her arms across her chest like a spoiled brat. He felt her perk up in her seat when they rounded the corner and could see her cottage. As soon as he began to slow down to park she lunged over David and was out the door of the still moving truck before either man could get a good hold of her.“Liana!” David yelled, but she didn’t even look back. She stooped by a rock on her
“Don’t you dare break the door down!” She yelled at them. “I know how to take a shower. What is it with werewolves and a total lack of boundaries? Haven’t you been around enough humans to understand the concept of privacy? Leave. Me. Alone! Get me some clean clothes if you need something to do. Put them by the door. Or what is it they say in all those old movies...go boil some water. Just leave me be!”“If you pass out in the shower you’ll drown.”“At least I’ll die at home,” she muttered.“Lia honey,” David said softly with his forehead on the door, “we need to know you’re okay.”“Stay the frig out!” She yelled when David began trying to pick the lock. “I’ll sing in the shower so you know I’m conscious. If I stop singing for more than a minute you can barge in here like a bunch of bafoons and save the naked princess from the evil shower monster.” There was nothing but silence.“Lia?”“I’m thinking! I can’t exactly take my phone in the shower for karaoke now can I? Nothing is coming to
Liana lay on the floor in her room the next morning with her science textbook. After returning from the trip to her cottage she’d searched the pack house and the grounds, finally discovering a door in Jake’s bedroom room that lead out to a rooftop patio, and from there she could get enough of a signal to use her data and get into her e-mail. She had managed to get in touch with her teachers and explain that this move was temporary, because of her Gran’s health, and that she was hoping to return in a couple weeks. They’d all been happy to know her guardian had simply overreacted and agreed to send her assignments to her and give her a skip on any quizzes or tests for the rest of the month. They said were looking forward to seeing her back in class. Finding a way to sneak in there to send in her assignments might be more difficult, she didn’t want to get caught in his room, but hopefully, she would be living back home and attending school in person before anything came due.Her stomach g
Jake stood just inside his bedroom door waiting for the smell of the soup to dissipate enough to tell him Liana was done with her dinner. He’d been so ecstatic to have finally found his mate that he hadn’t really thought about how she felt. It was time to correct that. Typically both werewolves were happy once a bond was revealed and he’d just arranged things as though she was as happy with the match as he was and would want to start adjusting to her new position as quickly as possible. He should have realized that wouldn't be the case with a werewolf who had been raised to believe she was human. He should have talked to her about what he was doing. Normally they would be sharing through the mind link and he’d just know, but since that wasn’t possible with Liana he should have been talking to her more, asking more questions. It wasn’t as though he’d mated with someone who’d grown up knowing werewolf ways and was excited to find a mate quickly and proud to have the moon goddess choose h
Four white paws padded softly along the water’s edge, and the young werewolf was being extremely careful not to actually get his feet wet. Being a wolf was new to him, but he was determined not to let that show. He bent to lap gently from the water just as the full moon crested over the waterfall. The jet black fur on his head and back gleamed brightly as the moon rose high enough that her light slipped over the falls to illuminate the pool of water and the whole werewolf family at the bottom of it. The young wolf looked up at the moon, blinking his heterochromatic eyes, first the blue one and then the brown before he howled his greeting to the goddess.A wistful little sigh drew Lia’s attention down to her daughter’s dark brown eyes. “When will I get to be my woff, Mama?”“Oh my little wolf,” Lia laughed, scooping her tiny daughter up in a hug and rubbing noses with her. “You will shift when the moon goddess knows you’re ready.”“But eva-buddy but me gets ta be a woff,” the little one
There was a great blast of icy wind and the werewoves found themselves being drug back towards the hill where the council had assembled. “COULD LAKE. OCEAN MONE. LA LUNE ROSE. LONE WOLVES. VISITING WEREWOLVES. ALL WEREWOLVES MUST ASSEMBLE!” There was a loud rumble followed by a series of pops, like popcorn in the large theater popping machines. Wolves and people began appearing from thin air, all facing the lycan with their heads bowed.“Where is the pup from Cloud Lake who they call Zinnia?” A girl stumbled forward from the back of the assembled wolves. There was a bag over her head and her hands were tied. Both the bag and the rope disappeared, the only reminder that they had been there was a faint red line around her neck and wrists.. “Where is the mate of Zinnia?” Dylan’s wolf appeared beside her and she dropped to her knees, wrapping her arms around his neck. The council members all looked to one another and nodded.“The Bane is dead,” they said in unison. His body appeared on the
Around noon, bit of a commotion in the yard pulled Jake from his comfortable sleep by the fire. He lifted up to listen for a moment, but since no link message accompanied it he assumed it was nothing important and settled back down when Lia’s wolf snuggled in closer to his side. They hadn’t moved from beside the fire since they’d come in from the chaos of the previous night. Lia’s wolf was still weak and she got chilled every time the fire died. Jake fully expected to hear from the lycan again soon, but he wasn’t in any rush. A few more angry wolf noises roused him again, this time enough that he linked with Mark to find out what was going on.“No need for you to come, Alpha. We have dealt with the problem.”“What problem?”“First there was some commotion around the Lycan guest cottage. We didn’t know what it was, but the Lycan had not stirred and none of our pack members were there so we left it be. A while later Zinnia’s father and Grandfather grabbed her from the shore, but Dylan w
“Something is wrong,” Jake said, “why did the other pack speed up?” They raced along in silence for a few minutes, then David spoke.“There are unknown lifeboats chasing the Lune Rose’s small boats. It’s going to be a matter of who’s got the better engine. The fishing boats can’t get in any closer to help them out. It looks like the boat with Marguerite on it will make it back, but the boat with our pack members is heading for some sort of spillway or something. Sorry, I’m not good with maritime geographical terms. A bit of water that is always flowing into the ocean. It might be shallow now though, and they’ll be going upstream. They might get stuck. We’re heading there hoping to intervene.”“This ability to randomly link you lone wolves have is really handy.”“It isn’t something we can teach to you,” David said, “any Lone Wolf who marries into a pack or chooses to pledge to one, loses the ability. You have free communication, or you have a pack link. It can’t be both.”“I know this r
Jake cried out with everyone else on shore when he saw the giant fireball. He’d told him no. Killian had either defied a direct order or accidentally crashed. Defied the order was more likely. “If he survives, he’s a dead man,” Jake growled.“Even if he brings them back?” Dylan asked. “I said no.”“He didn’t ask though, did he? His message was that he was ditching the plane, hopefully onto the ship, and jumping in as close as possible to the three life jackets. He was probably out of the plane before he got your command.” Jake growled again, but not with as much force. He hated to admit that Dylan was right, and he hated even more that he was hoping Killian would succeed.“Any word?” David asked.“We’re not asking,” Dylan said, “he’s got enough to worry about right now. He hit the water alive, I don’t know beyond that. We'll just wait to hear.”“Jasper tells me the raft is open, but only a little over half inflated. It will hold Selene and Lia, but the men will have to ride the tide
Selene stayed so completely motionless that Lia wasn’t entirely sure she was still conscious. The last kick had moved her too far from her mother for her to reach. She didn’t dare try the link on her own though, not with both werewolves and a Lycan around. She was pretty sure it was all her wolf could handle just to remember to keep all the links closed. The boat swayed on a large swell and her nausea increased. She swallowed the extra saliva, pressing a hand to her middle and trying to think of anything other than the motion and the burning in her stomach. She was colder and more miserable feeling than she had ever been in her life. Either sea sickness increased over time and made every motion more miserable than the last, or the sea was getting rougher. Did that mean they were moving out of the bay? Was the falling snow in the bay just a taste of a storm raging off the coast? On the next large swell, her cage slid across the deck and bumped into Selene’s. The two stared at each other
“What’d he mean by that?” Asked Albert. “Train 'er fer what?”“You’re a wee bit slow or something? Teach her to always do as the man in charge tells her. Strip. Stick her ass in the air. Suck a man off. Beg him to break her nose. Bring him a whip to crack over her pussy. Whatever he says.”“Jesus,” cursed Albert. There was a chorus of laughter. “You’ll like it when he gives you a go with her.”“He...he does that?”“Sure, you just can’t stick nothing in her pussy, that hole belongs to the buyer, but anything else you want to do to her is fine. Sometimes there’s a specific thing he wants us to do, but mostly we can do whatever we want. He says it’s easier to train them when they’re little, but really I think he enjoys breaking the older ones in more.”“How’d you mean?”“Well, this past summer there was this little dark-haired girl we picked up in Mexico, maybe twelve or thirteen years old. Just getting her tits. Anyways, she was fighting tooth and nail when we go her on board. He brough
"For the love of the moon!" Yelled Mark, "how do they expect us to find what they can not? A Lycan who doesn't want to be found can not be tracked by werewolves just because the council commands it! We sure as cats can’t make him come here just by asking politely."The words were barely out of his mouth when David, Jake and Zinnia all cried out, "Lia!" Mark spun to look at his Alpha, surprised to see hope radiating from his smiling face."She is alive!" He said, "Her wolf is linking with me, though not well. I'm getting a jumble of images and sensations. I can't really figure it out.""I got the message scared, stuck, and a call for help as clear as air," David said, "but that is the sort of message Selene taught her to send specifically to me, so her wolf has known how to do that for many years. I don't have a location or anything useful. Usually useful information comes with the call for help.""She in on or near the ocean," Zinnia said, "and I think Selene is with her. I am getting
Jake heard David’s yelp of surprise at the same time he got his linked message. Lia had been there one moment, sneezed, then disappeared into thin air! There one moment and gone the next. Literally vanished in the blink of an eye. The werewolves around him were frozen in shock, looking at each other and trying to make sense of what they were seeing in the link. Only a lycan could make werewolves vanish like that, and they only did that when a law had been broken. There was always a warning too, not a hearing really, but a sentencing so the wolf and their family all knew what was happening and why. Jake took a slow steadying breath. Lia had done nothing wrong that he knew about and a lycan would ensure one mate knew the other’s transgressions. Usually their entire family and the pack as well. Lycan were heavy-handed and unforgiving when it came to law breaking, but they too followed their own laws to the letter. The family had to be notified first. Jake suspected the point of that was t
