“A blind boy? What did you mean?” Lanver asked with confusion. He never remembered that he had problems physically.
“You were born blind, Lanver. And the fact that you were the first born of the great mage and a princess was a big deal. For everyone in Terra Lucien, you were considered as a sign of death and destruction. Some said that you and your family were cursed. Rumors even had it that Lord Vincentius wasn’t as noble as he claimed to be and was practicing dark magic.”
Lanver remained silent. Although the story was still unbelievable for him, a big part of him was saying that Lucius was telling nothing but the truth.
“Princess Anna’s family was condemned by their people and someone tried to overthrow the king. Her father was enraged and sent men to kill the child as he valued his throne more than his own blood. That’s when Princess Anna thought that the best thing they should do was to take you away from this world and bring you to the land of humans. However, Lord Vincentius had to remain as he needed to cast a spell in the portal so that no one with ill plans against you can enter it. A spell that will cost the caster’s life.”
The window’s glass turned into a mirror. Lucius stepped back and gestured Lanver to stepped forward. Lanver advanced and stopped just a meter away. But he didn’t see his reflection in the mirror. Instead, he saw a man and a woman carrying a child. They looked running for their lives from whomever it was after them.
Even though the woman seemed to be in her prime years and was wearing different clothing, Lanver was sure. His eyes wouldn’t lie to him. She was his mother.
“The man is Lord Vincentius, your father.”
Lanver looked at the man and he swallowed the lump in his throat. He had never seen him before. His mother never described what he looked like. And to see their resemblance this way hurt him. How could he miss such an important detail in his life?
The window turned back to its original state. Lucius spoke.
“I guess that’s enough evidence that I’m not just talking nonsense here.”
Lanver faced him. “That’s unfair, don’t you think? They did nothing wrong. If the child was born that way then how was it connected to everyone in your world? It was already painful to them to have a blind child but no one cared.”
“My father and our kingdom tried to protect them, Lanver. But that time my father was new to the throne. He had enemies even inside the palace. He tried his best.”
Lanver looked away, frustrated as hell. He never thought his life was this complicated.
“But I’m not blind. I was never blind even in the oldest memories I have.”
“That’s because you healed yourself.”
Lanver’s lips parted.
“You healed yourself just before you turned two years old. But your mother wanted you to live away from bloodshed, so she never came back. Lord Vincentius was dead, her family disowned her, she had no one. There was nothing to come back for.”
“If that’s the case, why did you bring me back? If the people loathe me back then, it will still be the same. Besides, I was raised as a human. I don’t belong here. Let me leave.”
“It was all in the past, Lanver. And you need to understand that we can’t let you go. For now.”
“Tell me why then. Why? Why should I be here?”
“A year ago, our kingdom’s divine prophet had a prophecy. A big war will break out soon and Azlea’s barrier is getting weaker every year. Lord Vincentius was the one who built it. We had tried all the most powerful mages of this generation to rebuild it but no one could as it requires Lord Vincentius’ blood.”
“So you need me for that? Fine. I’ll give you my blood. After that, let me leave.”
“But that’s not as simple as that. You have to rebuild the barrier yourself. We believe only you can do it because you are Lord Vincentius’ descendant.”
Lanver stepped back and shook his head. It was already enough that they brought him here without permission. To know the truth about his parents was already enough. He can’t stay here. He has a life waiting in his world.
“I don’t think I can do that. I am not as powerful as you think. No, I can’t do that. I’m sorry. Just let me leave peacefully and I’ll forget everything that happened here,” he said firmly. There was no way he’d let himself be involved in their matters.
“You only need to awaken your abilities, Lanver. You can do it.”
“I said, I can’t! I won’t do it. My decision is final.” Lanver equaled Lucius’ intense cold look.
“If that’s the case, then I have to apologize on behalf of my family. It’s not your decision to make. The king had made the decision. You will stay here and we will only let you go once you’ve done the job.”
Lanver’s mouth fell apart in disbelief.
“No, you can’t do that. How can you force someone into something, huh? Where is your king? I will talk to him.”
“Alright. I’ll lead you to him. But first…” Lucius trailed off and his gaze went down to what Lanver was wearing. “You need to dress appropriately.”
Lanver looked at his own clothing and remembered he was only wearing his sleeping clothes. He didn’t even have shoes or slippers.
“Stuart, get him some decent clothes.”
Lanver thought the servant would leave the room but Stuart went to the big closet at the far corner instead.
“Isn’t this your sister’s room?”
“Yes, it is,” Lucius answered flatly.
“Why would she have men’s clothes in her closet?”
“For her men.”
For her men… Lanver echoed in his mind. He couldn’t believe it. He thought girls here were a little more conservative than humans, but turned out they were worse. And how come that his brother seemed to not care about his sister’s doings? He should be disciplining that young lady!
“But rest assured, my lord. These clothes are clean and unused,” Stuart said, smiling politely as he handed the clothes to him.
Lanver had no choice but to wear it. Even though it wasn’t the current trend in human world, it was good and passable.
Lucius led him out and he followed him as they walked on a long carpeted hallway. To see the grandeur at every corner, Lanver thought that they must be a big and powerful kingdom.
Lanver saw them approaching a room with double doors. There were servants lining up outside. When they saw Lucius, they immediately bowed their heads and two opened the doors.
“This is the royal meeting hall,” Lucius informed him.
However, he stopped on his track when he saw who were waiting for him at a long table, with their amber eyes fixated on him.
The wicked princess raised a brow at him, her lips curving up into a wicked smile.
There were five of them. Lucius took a seat which made them six. Sitting at the head of the table was a man holding a wine glass, who must be the king given his position in the table. But he wasn't the king Lanver expected. He expected to see someone older, their father perhaps, but the king was a young man. Someone who looked just his age or probably a little older. On the right side of the king was the ill-mannered princess, on his left was Lucius. There were two other men and a lady who looked the youngest among them."It's nice to finally meet you, Lanver," the King said in a deep voice. He didn't know how to address him or if he should greet him back for the sake of courtesy, but at the end he just voiced out his thoughts."I couldn't say the same."Emery hissed. "Why are you so rude? Even if you were raised as a human, right now you are in our territory. Have respect for the King."The King tapped Emery's hand. "It's alright. He is not accustomed to our rules.""But Your Majesty
"If I could go back in time, I'd rather close my eyes to unsee everything. Because the pain I felt that moment scarred my soul. It has always remained in my mind, haunting me in my darkest nights."The young girl listened as the woman ran her fingers to the girl's hair while reading her favorite book. It wasn't a book supposed to be read to a child, but the young girl insisted. She had been curious what was her mother's favorite book all about. She had a brilliant mind and didn't want to limit her knowledge. After all, it was better for her to broaden her perspective in life so she could use it in the future."Do you agree with her, Mother? If you were in her shoes would you want the same?" the young girl asked, talking about the last part her mother had read. The woman smiled. "Yes, sweetheart. That's why if you see something bad you should do what I've always told you, understand?""I understand, Mother. If I see something bad, I will close my eyes so it won't remain in my heart.""
The delight in the King's eyes was evident. Lanver saw this and realized that Amadeus was a great king who wanted nothing but the best for his people. It was a shame the human world lacked great leaders like him. But then again, life was not fair. It has never been."But I have no idea how to do it," Lanver said."As soon as we can awaken your mage blood, then your training will not be that hard for you since you were a trained fighter who had been through a lot.""Awaken my mage blood?" Lanver was confused. He didn't know if he could ever be accustomed to the terms used in this world."Yes. Right now we can only feel your presence as a human. Princess Anna must have sealed it to hide you. However, your blood as a mage must be so strong that it could resist Princess Anna's spell, that's why there were times, as you've noticed, when something weird were happening to you.""Why would you know what was happening to me back there?""Let's just say we have the means to see what is happenin
Cold and shivering, I slumped to the ground with my head feeling dizzy. It was seven days since I left my pack, Moonraven, and ran to the vast outskirts of Seattle from Vancouver, scared that Benedict's men must be hunting me down. But I guess this is the farthest I could get with no money and food.I leaned on the tree and closed my eyes. The light from the horizon was starting to fade and I could barely see a faint light from where I was because of the tall trees surrounding me. Sure, it was a good place to die, somewhere peaceful and calm. But should I allow myself to just die like this after my parents sacrificed themselves for my freedom? Should I put their efforts into waste by giving up?I don't think I have the heart to do that. But I also don't know where I can get strength in the middle of wilderness.I can't help but ponder about some things. Too much trust and kindness were my father's weakness. He trusted Benedict and the people surrounding him too much that he was blinde
I've always felt the weird demeanor Benedict has all those years of him acting loyal to my father. He's handsome, quiet, I think the quietest man I've ever met, he's most of the time serious, and he never looked at any girl in our pack. He was either training the men or handling the pack's affairs.I didn't have casual conversations with him even though he was often invited to our house for dinners and parties. I'd always seen him in the town, and back when I was still studying, we went to the same school. I didn't give him much attention then, but I knew he was good at academics. Well, he's good at everything he does if my memory serves me right.Although his beta father died early, with his contributions, everyone believed that he was the only man worthy of my hand. They said we were perfect for each other. I couldn't disagree more. I had never pictured myself marrying Benedict Allen. I could stomach Tyler, his geek cousin who couldn't even throw a punch, but not him.Even though he
[Three months earlier...]She was destined to marry the King. Melrose had pinned that in her mind ever since she turned fifteen. Lord Lewis, her stepfather who had been her only family since the age of five, had never been tired of reminding her that. For a lady without a fetish for romance, it was the best the world could offer. The King was, after all, a young man with a pleasant character and outstanding physical attributes. He was crowned at the age of sixteen, and has been ruling the country for six years now. He was doubted by many at first as he was only a palace maid's son, but over the years he had gained the respect and trust of people.Melrose believed he was the best choice among the most eligible men in town. Not only because he was the most powerful and desired by most women, but because she had known him for years. She was sure he'd make a good husband. As Lord Lewis had always envisioned Melrose marrying the King one day, he raised her in the best way he could. Only th
The De Noir manor was situated at the southern part of Arden, near the woods and without any neighboring houses or small villages. The King offered Lord Knight to stay at the palace during his vacation but he refused the offer and told the King that he wanted a place where he could be at peace, and the palace, being the center of political affairs and eyes of many, wasn't a place inclined to the word "tranquility" for him.So the King, as generous as he was, sought for a solution and offered Lord Knight places where he could stay for the meantime, including the De Noir manor, a property owned by his late mother, Princess Celestine. Now that Lord Knight decided to stay in the manor, people were more cautious to not stay near the property for folks felt his domineering and dangerous presence as if he would eat anyone alive just by his look.Besides, the townspeople tend to avoid the said place just as much as how everyone avoided North Ridge, for they believed that the manor had dark en
With a big hat on her head, Melrose followed Arianne closely and asked, "Are you sure I won't be recognized by people, Arianne?"Arianne, who was dressed up the same, answered, "With how big that hat of yours, your face could hardly be seen. Just keep your head low and don't act too stiff or people might get curious.""Are there even women who wear hats inside the club? And we are dressed so poorly that one will think we are lower than servants. Ladies in a gentlemen's club for sure, even those from the lower class, could have worn better clothes than this. I doubt this is your way of keeping low or getting us busted.""Silly girl," Arianne held her arm as they approached the entrance of Spade House. She grinned at Melrose. "Mellie, trust me, okay? I will have this Mr. Harris tamed today that he will forget about the duel he is supposed to have with my foolish brother. And about our clothes, I made this on purpose so that not a single gentleman will bother taking interest in you. I do
He must be stronger and wiser than I thought. I figured that I'm not very unfortunate. I met a strong and influential vampire like him and he is the perfect person who can help me achieve my goals."What else can you do?" I really wonder."Hmm…"In in instant, he was in front of me, pinning me at the back of the old piano.I gasped when his finger grazed my arm in a slow provocative manner. It ran up to my shoulder, then to my neck."What are you doing?""What do you think, my wife?"My wife.I don't know but it sounds strangely… good. What the hell is happening to me? I don't know what change but I could feel that something did change. Is it because of what happened between us that night? All my thoughts were wiped out my mind when I felt Landon's tender lips. His kiss was shallow at first but soon it became deep and urgent.I don't know what I should do anymore. I felt like a wild flower lost in the middle of the forest. I can't seem to justify all my actions, nor stop my emotions f
"Because there is no point hiding the truth now that what I was scared of already happened.""And you are out of the picture now. You can't change the fact that Eve has a new life. So even if you had presented yourself as her mate and wants to take the responsibility to keep her, do you think you still have the right to do that? You don't, so better back off and let me do the job since I'm his husband," Landon said."You don't love her. You just want to use her against Alec because you know very well that Eve has the face of Elizabeth, Alec's mate."Alec's mate? Did he mean that my grandma Elizabeth was Alec's mate? But how did it happen that she married another man? What happened between them?"How intelligent you are, Carter," Alec butt in with a smirk on his face as if he is enjoying this so much.Carter just clenched his jaw on Alec's remark. His look can almost kill and I could feel that he is only stopping himself because maybe like me, he also knew that if this would escalate i
I don't know why it feels weird. I felt a little bad for turning my back on Carter and leaving, but I also feel a little pleasant for walking back to Landon. So complex, isn't it? I don't even know how feeling two different emotions at the same time is possible.I know Carter doesn't want me to go to Landon because he's afraid I would end yo getting hurt, alright. But he doesn't know what I feel. I trust my instincts and it's saying that I can trust that Landon won't hurt me. And also, I didn't feel right leaving him like that. He is all alone while Carter has his family so I don't think it would be a big deal if I leave Carter for the moment so I can talk with Landon. I really need to have a lot sorting out to do, especially about this feelings I have for Carter and Landon. The moment I was close to Landon, I heard a sound of nearing chopper. I thought it was the one Carter's family used, but it wasn't.The chopper landed near us. Henry went out from it."I apologize if it took a whi
I frowned at him. "Don't say that.""Say what?""Don't say 'I love you more' because I feel like my love for you is smaller than what you have for me. Just say 'I love you' or 'I love you too'. I think it's better."His eyebrow shot up. "I don't see the difference.""Whatever. I'm eager to see my parents now so we should get going.""Glad you reminded me that," he said as if he had dark thoughts earlier that made him forget our main business. It was already late when we set a foot in Seattle, so we went to a hotel and decided to go meet my Mom early in the morning tomorrow."Anyway, you'd show up too? I mean, how am I gonna explain that you are with me? The alibi you've rooted in my parents' mind was that I went on a vacation alone because I got heartbroken with Carter. Wouldn't they be weirded out that I brought a man after my short vacation?" I asked while we were on the car he rented, with Henry driving us to Lynnwood."Why don't you just say the truth, then?""What truth?""That y
Isabella's POVLife has always been unfair to me or maybe I want something against my fate. When I was three my mother died in a car accident. Later my father turned his back on me. He re-married Julia when I was seven. I was treated like trash and was forced to eat trash i.e. remainings and slept at trash i.e. store. My life was a modern Cinderella story minus the fairy godmother and prince charming. But who needs all this when I was a one-woman army. I learned to fight my own battle and ticket to freedom.I graduated from high school at the age of sixteen and did my bachelors on finance at nineteen.I had enough credit points to pa
His lips parted on the last part of what I said as though he didn't understand any of it."Your… boyfriend," he uttered the words slowly as if he is trying to understand it. "What do you mean, I thought…" he trailed off and just dropped his gaze on me, obviously asking for an explanation."Carter and I broke up couple of months ago, remember? I was heartbroken that's why I went to Arizona for a vacation because I wanted to forget and take a break. It was a coincidence that Landon was also there. We developed something while we were spending time with each other. He helped me coped up, so…" I shrugged and just smiled because I don't know what more I can say."Hello, sir. Landon Arthurs," Landon introduced himself politely."Arthurs? Are you connected to the owner of Arthurs Group in England, perhaps?""I'm the one running it," Landon said with pride as if he wanted to impress Dad."Oh!" Amazement was evident on Dad's eyes. Landon smiled, satisfied."Come, come. I will ask the maids to
"But something is bothering you, am I correct?"I didn't answer because he will just ask me what is it."Is it that Rellis?" he went on in a low and gentle voice."You are thinking twice of marrying me again because you don't want to hurt him. You care for him… you love him.""But I love you more."My eyes widened a fraction, surprised at my own words. Even Landon was taken aback by that."You love me more? Did I hear It right, Eve?"I was at loss for words."Love, please… say it again. Who is it you love more?"I shut my eyes tight. He chuckled and planted a soft kiss on my lips that made me look at him again."Say it again, Eve," he encouraged as he started kissing me on my neck. Now I don't think I can still think straight."Eve," he pleaded and from my waist, his hands crawled and wander around my curves and the parts that he had only touched. I felt low electric bolts when he touched my bare skin under the thin fabric I was wearing."Say it—""Yes, Landon, damn it! I love you mor
Back then, I didn't want Zach to visit there. But when I slowly learned to accept everything, little by little, I accepted Klyde was part of Zach's life. He is, after all, his father. Just like how my mom is still Mommy. I visit her at times, and even if I want to bring Zach, he doesn't want to.Mommy still haven't accepted it all, despite what happened. Even then, not once, he could not visit Ate. I thought he would also accept eventually, the mistake of Ate and her grandson, but to this day I am still waiting for that day to come. I don't know if she regretted the things she had done in her most private moments. All I know is, whatever she did before, I genuinely forgave her.But forgiveness doesn't mean I've forgotten everything he's done. It was still painful to look back until now. But I know holding grudges won't bring any good. You need to move on in order to see the brighter side of life, to taste the light in spite of how you got drowned in darkness in the past."Ma'am, I've
I dropped the book in panic and almost jumped. I turned to him. Why does he tend to appear suddenly?Lucian's eyes were far more intense than last night. I had a nightmare after that short interaction. Won't it make me have a nightmare again tonight?Holding the book and photo, I stood up and faced him, face formal. His cold and suspicious look remained. It was like he just caught me doing something illegal and he's ready to punish me for it."I heard you said Emiliano Bosque. Tell me. How did you know him?" His voice was as cold as ice.I did not say a word. How would I answer, anyway?"Why can't you answer?" he demanded. My grip on the book tightened as he slowly stepped closer. I stepped back until I felt the shelf. I was swallowed. I think I've said everything cheaply in my mind. He's damn scaring the shit out of me!"Answer. Me."And he stopped half a foot away. He looked at me, wondering if he was still standing and as if his patience was about to be tightened."Who really are y
